A third-grade class knows exactly what will brighten an older neighbor’s holiday meal-and it isn’t a roast turkey. In October, I told the eight-year-olds I taught in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. “I’d like all of you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money, ”I said. “Then we’ll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.”
I wanted the children to experience that it’s more blessed to give than to receive. I wanted them to understand that religion is more than nice theological (神学的) ideas; that people somehow have to make it come alive.
Early in Thanksgiving week, the boys and girls arrived in class with their hard-earned money and couldn’t wait to go shopping. After pacing up and down in the supermarket, we put a turkey and decorations in the shopping cart (购物车). At last we headed toward the checkout, and then someone spotted a “necessity” that sent them racing. “Flowers!”
“We have Kristine cried. The group rushed toward the holiday plants. I pronounced, limited money and after all, you can’t eat flowers.”“But Mrs. Sherlock, ” the group replied, looking at me eagerly, “we want flowers.”Defeated, sighed as the children put a bunch of pink roses into the cart.
An organization had given us the name and address of Maria, a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. Soon we were bouncing along a rough road to her house. We finally pulled up in front of a small house in the woods. A thin woman with a tired face came to the door to welcome us.
My little group hurried to get the food. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept saying “Thanks”一much to the visitors’ pleasure. When Amy put the pink roses on the table, the woman seemed surprised. She was wishing it was a bag of flour, I thought. Having talked for a while, we returned to the car.

“Okay, guys, I have to make a quick announcement!” Our teacher held up the brochures so all the students could see them. “These are brochures filled with information about an opportunity to become an exchange student and experience different parts of the world. I will pass them around so you may look at them.”
When my friend, Jenny and I received them, we started reading immediately. I was impressed by all the colorful and bright pictures of high schools with their animal mascots, host families who were smiling into the camera together with their exchange students, soccer players on the field and cheerleaders who were performing in a gym in the UK. The picture of the cheerleaders caught my attention. Two girls were standing on the floor with the third girl’s feet on their shoulders. I also loved the pictures of the host families. I imagined how it would feel to life with a foreign family. I felt that I wanted to experience a life in another country and to learn about its people and culture.
I was continually dreaming of going to a different country for ten months, living with a host family and going to a high school abroad. But it was almost the end of grade two and I thought there was no possible chance for me to do this in my following year of high school.
“I would love to have an exchange year in the UK. It’s too bad that I am late for applying for this.” I said with a disappointed voice. “No, you’re not! You’re probably too late to apply for it in grade three, but now you still have time.” Jenny said. I regained my hopes of going to the UK as an exchange student.
I applied to become an exchange student in the UK. I had to fill out many forms about my hobbies, my dreams, my strengths and weaknesses. Also, I had to write what I thought about Britain and a letter to my future host family.

5 . Most of the people who appear most often and most gloriously in the history books are great conquerors and generals, while the people who really helped civilization forward are often never mentioned. We do not know who first set a broken leg, or launched a seaworthy boat, or calculated the length of the year but we know all about the killers and destroyers. People think so much of them that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general.
It is possible they are, but they are not the most civilized. Animals fight, so do savages(野蛮人); so to be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which an animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized.
A.Even being good at getting others to fight most efficiently is not being civilized. |
B.Most people believe those who have conquered the most nations are the greatest. |
C.However, every year conflict between countries and nations still claim thousands of lives. |
D.From the point of view of evolution, human beings are very indeed, babies of a few months old. |
E.So there has been little time to learn in, but there will be oceans of time in which to learn better. |
F.People don't fight and kill each other in the streets, but nations still behave like savages. |
Mark was returning home from his school as usual when he suddenly heard the wind howling and blowing at a high speed. Soon it started pouring cats and dogs. He ran as fast as he could but tripped over a piece of rock and fell down. In his hurry to reach home fast, he had to take the shortcut route, which passed through the graveyard (墓地 ).
His mother’s words came ringing loud in his ears. She had warned him about taking the shortcut. But it was now too late. Suddenly, it was all dark around and the heavy downpour didn’t allow him to get a good view of the surroundings. He could now hear strange sounds. He was terrified and was trembling with fear.
He remembered about the flashlight in his pockets. As soon as he switched it on, a huge figure plunged on him. He kicked it hard and it fell with a thud(扑通一声). He was panicked and was at his wits end.
Mark didn’t know what to do. As he looked at what this creature was, he found that it was only a big stone. Mark couldn’t go to the graveyard, nor could he wet his books, so he took small steps towards a tree nearby. As he neared it, the sounds seemed getting louder. He became really frightened but then he thought,” I surely must be dreaming and I don’t want to wake up Mom and feel that I am a scary cat. Nothing can happen to me in a dream.” So he looked behind the tree. To his surprise he found an old tape recorder there. He said, “What a nasty trick! I am going to find who’s behind this tree.” So he looked around. That’s when he found an old mine(矿井) there. As he neared it, he heard a voice“ what if we are caught.” “ No, we won’t, as there are rumors(谣言)about this place and when people hear this noise they are sure to run away, so we are safe here. Nobody will find us with these stolen goods”.
Paragraph 1 :
“Thieves?” Mark was surprised and guessed the voice that he heard came from some thieves.
