3 . It was a hot summer day a few years ago. I had just pulled into the local gas station. After pumping the gas I started to walk inside to pay. That was when I noticed them. Two elderly women were standing back from their car. There was a mixture of shock and fear on their faces. I looked and saw what they saw. Five yellow jackets had started to build a nest around their gas cap. My eyes widened. I shared the ladies’ fear.
Yellow jackets had never been friends of mine. Several times these wasps (黄蜂) had attacked me while I was gardening. They gave me multiple stings (蜇) each time I ran over their ground nests. They are the reason I never do gardening in shorts anymore. The worst time, however, happened when I was a young boy. A friend of mine and I were running and playing in my backyard. I must have stepped on one of their hidden nests again because before I knew it both of us were being chased and stung over and over by the yellow jackets while we ran away screaming. I ran to my mom with tears in my eyes. She immediately ran a cold bath and put us both in it to ease (缓解) the pain before giving us medicine.
Still, I knew I couldn’t let fear stop me now. I reached into my back pocket for a paper towel I had there, tore out the nest and stepped on it while the angry wasps buzzed around me. Both of the ladies thanked me and I said, “You’re welcome!” with a smile and a happy heart.

4 . Instagram is a hugely popular way for users to share pictures, videos and messages with family and friends. Most people use the service on their mobile phones.
Now, Instagram users are able to use the service for a completely different activity — reading books. The New York Public Library recently started a new service called Insta Novels. This new service will include a collection of classic books through Instagram. The service is available for all Instagram users, not just people in New York City.
Library officials have promised to provide readers with “some of the greatest stories ever told“. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was the first on Instagram. The New York Public Library said this famous story was specially designed for Instagram to include colorful animations(动画)and modern drawings.
The books can be found in Instagram Stories. This Instagram feature(特色) was designed to let users post photos and videos that would disappear after 24 hours. But then Story Highlights was introduced last year as a way for users to keep content in Stories for as long as they want. Books posted by the library will be available through Story Highlights.
Library officials say the main purpose is to raise awareness about reading in general. But it is also designed to show how the library is changing to fit an online world and attract younger people.
Christopher Platt, the New York Public Library’s chief library officer, spoke about the service. “We want people to understand that libraries aren’t just places full of dusty books,” he said.
The library has already lined up several other classic works in the coming months. These include The Yellow Wallpaper, a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.

6 . Most Americans speak directly and are not afraid to say “no”. But we do have ways to be polite-or show respect for another’s feelings.
Any questions?
In the case of a teacher asking, “Do you have any questions?” You may want to answer this way, “ No, I do not have any, because your lesson was very clear.”
Another answer you may give is:
More coffee?
On a plane when a flight attendant (乘务员) asks, “Do you need coffee?” you may hear this answer: “Thanks, I’m fine.”
Note that the speaker does not use the word “no” but still sends the message that coffee is not wanted. Another answer would suggest something else the attendant can bring.
More difficult situations
I think that saying “no” may be more difficult in other situations, such as when a friend asks you for a favor.
Here is an example:
—Ryan, can I borrow your bicycle tomorrow?
—No, I’m sorry, but I need it to go to my job.
—Ryan, can you join us for dinner Saturday?
—I wish I could, but I have other plans.
Here, you express the idea that you want to accept the invitation but you do not need to give details (细节) of your plan.
A.In this case, Americans would usually explain why they cannot help. |
B.Let us look at some polite ways to say“no” |
C.You may worry what you say is annoying. |
D.Not now, but I might have some later. |
E.It is also difficult to say “no” to an invitation. |
F.No, thanks, but I would like some water. |

10 . If you think of the jobs robots could never do, you would probably put doctors and teachers at the top of the list. But, in some cases, they already perform better than doctors at diagnosing(诊断)illness. Also some patients might feel more comfortable sharing personal information with a machine than a person. Could there be a place for robots in education after all?
British education expert, Anthony Seldon thinks so. And he even has a date for the robot takeover of the classroom: 2027. He believes robots will do the main job of transferring(传递)information and teachers will be like assistants. Intelligent robots will read students’ faces ,movements and maybe even brain signals. Then they will transfer the information to each student. It’s not a popular opinion and it’s unlikely robots will ever have empathy(共情) and the ability to really connect with humans like another human can.
One thing is certain, though. A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. In some parts of the world, there aren’t enough teachers and 9-16 percent of children under the age of 14 don’t go to school. Teachers all over the world are leaving because it is a difficult and lower-paid job and they feel overworked. That problem could be part solved by robots.
Perhaps the question is not “ Will robots replace teachers?” but“How can robots help teachers?” Teachers waste a lot of time doing non-teaching work, including more than 11 hours a week marking homework. If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best.
