How did BYD build its dreams? BYD had an advantage from the start: unlike car makers that expanded to build electric models, it was     1     (original) a battery company that later started making cars.

Its chief executive Wang Chuanfu was born into a family of farmers. After earning degrees in college, he co-founded BYD along with his cousin in 1995. The two made a name for     2     (they) as manufacturers of rechargeable batteries     3     (use) in smartphones, laptops and other electronics-that competed with pricier Japanese imports. It became a publicly traded company in 2002. Electric Vehicles (EVs) were still in their early stages then, but     4     (official) were looking for a gap in the market that China could fill. For BYD, the batteries it had been making     5     (be) effectively the engines that would power EVs.
