文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了圈养繁殖项目促进了加州秃鹰数量的增加,而作者通过与美国鱼类和野生动物管理局合作,从事拍摄秃鹰的工作。

1 . Finding a California condor in the wild would be the most unusual treat. perhaps even more unusual than finding a wolf in Yellowstone National Park. In fact, the wolf was what opened my eyes to the fact that humans could bring an animal back to the place where it had disappeared.

In 1987, there were only 27 California condors left, none of which were in the wild, only in captive breeding programs, It was those breeding programs that contributed to their population rise, enough that by 1991 some of them could be freed into the wild.

Still, the hope of seeing a California condor, which remains an endangered species, is very low, let alone getting a photo of one. California condor population dropped mostly due to human factors, such as poaching and living areas destruction-these are challenges California condors still face today.

Although this is just a bird’s-eye view of the challenges California condors face and there are many others, it is part of why the opportunity to work with the US Fish and Wildlife Service team and their partners helping their recovery is so special to me as a photographer. I am not only able to photograph the birds in their wild living areas, but also understand and record how difficult the work is of those people on the front lines of the protection.

I am grateful for the work of the team, and my hope is that California condor population will continue to rise allowing future generations an opportunity I never had when I first got here-to look to the sky and see one flying around.

1. What helped the increase of the California condor population in 1987?
A.Rules for hunters.B.Captive breeding programs.
C.The improved natural environment.D.The enlargement of wild living areas.
2. What does the author say about taking photos of a California condor in the wild?
A.It is difficult.B.It is easy.C.It is boring.D.It is dangerous.
3. What did the author do when working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service team?
A.He guided ways for them.B.He made records by photos.
C.He helped the birds to recover.D.He rebuilt the birds’ living areas.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.New Way, New HopeB.Wolves and California Condors
C.A Photo of a California CondorD.The California Condor’s Coming Back
文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。世界上有许多种昆虫是可食用的,它们富含营养物质,饲养成本低,而且对环境友好。目前已经有多个公司尝试在他们的食物产品中加入昆虫配料。

2 . When you think of insects (昆虫), the first word that comes to mind probably won’t be “edible (可食用的)”. Surprisingly, what you may consider an insect may sound like a great meal to another. In Africa and the Middle East, insects such as grasshoppers and mealworms are a common dish. Many Asians also like eating insect dishes.

The idea of replacing (代替) pork, chicken, or beef with insects might sound unpleasant, but eating these small insects can be beneficial to both yourself and the environment.

There are over 2,100 types of edible insects in the world. Many of the insects that are eaten by humans are quite nutritious (有营养的). And they can be eaten in different ways: roasted over an open fire, freeze-dried, or cooked. In fact, insects can be added to various foods, and we likely won’t even notice the difference.

The biggest advantage is that the cost of raising insects is very small. Compared to cows, insects produce eight times fewer carbon emissions (碳排放物) and need six times less water to keep.

To add to that, insects can be fed with waste products. Insect waste can also be repurposed into soil fertilizer (土肥). And unlike traditional farms which take up about 80% of all farming land, insect farms are relatively small and can save space for other uses.

All this makes insect farms more profitable, with little wastage of money and resources.

As our world’s population increases towards 9 billion by 2050, traditional farming will not be enough to meet its growing food needs.

Some companies have already begun experimenting with insects in their food products. Mealworm burger patties, protein powder, and gummy sweets are just a few of the new food creations. And a few months ago, the European Union (EU) said yes to insects for human consumption (食用)!

1. What can we learn about insect eating?
A.It’s popular in Africa.B.It’s liked by the author.
C.It’s unpleasant for Asians.D.It’s accepted by few people.
2. What is the advantage of insect farming over traditional farming?
A.It is simpler.B.It costs less.
C.It requires no skills.D.It needs no manpower.
3. Which of the following statements might the author agree with?
A.Insects will replace beef in hamburgers by 2050.
B.Insects will be humans’ major food choices by 2050.
C.Insects will help meet the growing food needs of humans.
D.Insects will become more nutritious with modern farming.
4. What is the EU’s attitude towards insects becoming humans’ food choices?
A.Uncaring.B.Thankful.
C.Supportive.D.Doubtful.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了如何防止感染肠胃炎的方法。

4 . Stomach flu (肠胃炎) is one of the most unpleasant of the common diseases.    1     That’s especially true if someone in your family has it. But there are some things you can do to avoid catching it.

You can prevent stomach flu by washing your hands often. Use hot water and soap, and spend time scrubbing (擦洗). Using hand sanitizer (消毒杀菌剂) is better than nothing, but it doesn’t work well against stomach flu.     2

The virus (病毒) that causes stomach flu is hard to kill. Normal cleaners won’t always get rid of it. But cleaning your house can stop you from catching it. So mix bleach (漂白剂) with water, and use that to clean surfaces.     3

4     For example, dishwashers are better at killing viruses than washing dishes by hand, because they keep dishes hotter for longer. Besides, many viruses can live in your washing machine. So wash clothes with hot water and use bleach, if possible. You may even want to run the washing machine with no clothes, just hot water and bleach.

Once you’re feeling better, don’t return to work or school right away.     5     If you had a fever, wait at least 24 hours after it ends before going out. This will help protect other people from getting sick.

A.Hot water is helpful in killing viruses.
B.You probably won’t want to eat much.
C.It spreads easily, which can make it hard to avoid.
D.By following these tips, you can help stop it from spreading.
E.That’s because hand sanitizer mostly kills bacteria, not viruses.
F.You can still spread the disease for a few days after you feel better.
G.If someone in your family is sick, clean things that person has touched.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Alphabetical (字母表的) order was a big problem for Keisha Williams. In every list, on every line, in the lunchroom and the classroom, teachers put all the W’s together. Alice Wilkins was always one place ahead of Keisha.

“You two are going to be friends,” said the girls’ teacher, Ms. Mubarak, “whether you like it or not.”

Yeah, right. Could she be friends with Alice? “I doubt it,” Keisha thought. Alice was perfect. She was everything Keisha wasn’t. Alice changed her hairstyle every day. She always wore beautiful clothing. She had polish (指甲油) on her nails. Keisha had plain (普通的) nails, a very ordinary hairstyle — and not to mention her out-of-tyle clothes.

Alice had new fashionable notebooks. Keisha’s notebooks were boring black and white. Keisha complained to her mother that her notebooks were too plain. “They still have paper and lines,” her mother said. “You don’t need glitter (华丽) to make you smart.”

Keisha thought Alice’s mother treated her like a grown-up. Alice had a house key and said that she always let herself into her apartment. But when Keisha came home, she had to ring for her mother to open the door. And every time, her mother would give her a big bear hug. That’s for babies, Keisha always thought, trying to free herself from her mother’s arms.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mom was busy in the kitchen when my brother Marco and I got home from school on Friday. “Did you remember your grandmother’s coming today?” She asked. “Sure, Mom,” we laughed. “Didn’t you notice we cleaned our rooms?” Mom smiled and continued, “Thanks. I know I shouldn’t be nervous, but my mother hasn’t been here for almost six years! As I was growing up, her house always looked perfect. So I want everything to be well.”

“Perfect,” I said with a smile. “What else can we do to help before she gets here?”

Mom looked around,“You two could set the table. Use the good bowls. And be very careful with the glasses Grandma gave to us before you were born!”

As Mom prepared a big meal, Marco and I set the table. I taught Marco how to line up the forks on the left side of each p late and the knives and spoons on the right. In the center of the table, we placed a set of tall white candles. Then we stepped back and looked at our work. It seemed something was missing. “What’s missing?” I asked Marco.

“Napkins?” He asked. “And I don’t think Mom would want us to use paper ones!”

We both laughed. Marco opened a drawer and took out the nice cloth napkins Mom saved for special occasions (场合). The soft white squares were folded in the middle, and we placed one on each plate. “Do you think that looks good enough?” I asked.

“No,” Marco answered. “Let’s make them look better. Remember the restaurant we went to last year? Their napkins were folded into different shapes! That was great!”

I nodded and unfolded the cloth napkin in front of me. “Look,” I said, pointing to the napkin, “These lines make special shapes. That gives me a great idea! Let’s do origami (折纸). That’ll make the napkins unique!”

Marco looked confused, so I explained,“Origami’s a kind of folding art. People usually use paper, but you can use cloth. You make boats, birds or flowers just by folding. Nothing else is needed!”
