3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day, Dad took Tim and Lily to the supermarket. “Now where has Tim gone? ” asked Dad. Lily shrugged. Keeping track of Tim was not on her agenda today. She’d been trying to decide on the perfect gift for Dad’s upcoming birthday. This year, she was determined to prepare a present that couldn’t be bought at a store or ordered online.

“Daddy!” Tim appeared out of nowhere, disturbing Lily’s thoughts. He yelled, holding a cereal (麦片) box in the air, “Let’s get it! It’s nutritious and delicious! And it has a dragon inside! ” Tim remembered Dad saying that when he was a kid, almost every box of cereal came with a toy. Ever since, Tim was certain that he, too, would find a toy in the next box.

When they got home, Dad and Lily began putting away the groceries. Tim couldn’t wait to take the box of cereal upstairs to his room. By the time they finished, Lily could hear Tim shouting. “No! No!” Tim’s voice kept getting louder and louder. Lily imagined each word as the sound of a hammer striking metal. Then she raced towards her brother’s room. The moment she stepped inside, she felt a crunch (嘎吱声) beneath her feet. It was obvious that Tim dumped all that cereal looking for a toy dragon. “They lied! No dragon. Just a picture on the box.” Tim sounded close to tears. Annoyed as Lily was, she said quietly, “Let’s see what the box says.” “I don’t know how to read.” her brother said in a low voice.

It reminded Lily that last school year, Tim’s teacher who sent home easy-to-read books and worksheets insisted that he was ready to learn to read and just needed some extra help, but Tim complained about books “for babies” and “boring” homework assignments. It was really a headache for Dad to teach Tim to read! At the thought of these, it seemed that Tim’s dragon issue had swept away her concern for a present for Dad.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要介绍了对财富的正确认识,有钱不一定富有,当志愿者与别人分享时间、金钱、精力时,他们才是真正富有的人。

4 . As a financial adviser, my clients come to me seeking help with growing their wealth. Perhaps the greatest lesson I share is that being rich isn’t a dollar amount; it is a perception that includes happiness, peace of mind, comfort and security. There’s a big difference between being wealthy and feeling wealthy.

Actually, one of the best ways I advise others in building their wealth is this: The secret to having more is giving more. Studies have shown that people who volunteer weekly exhibit an increase in happiness. Donating your time makes you grateful for all that you have, and you’ll have the unmatched joy and excitement of knowing you made a huge impact for the good of others.

Volunteering enables you to increase your relationship skills and encourages you to have conversations with people from very different walks of life. You can even make new friends. It is also a wonderful activity that families can do together. This has the added benefit of serving as a good role model to your children. I am encouraging my kids to volunteer and experience the power of love for themselves.

Without fail, every time I volunteer, I have conversations that change my life in some way. I was once volunteering at a local shelter and struck up a conversation with other volunteers. As we chatted, we all suddenly realized: The massive gratitude of those receiving help acted like a nuclear bomb going off in our hearts, and it also touched the other volunteers, making us all realize how truly blessed we are.

Giving our time, money and energy gives us a sense of achievement like nothing else. If “wealth” really is a perception of happiness, comfort and security, we must learn to get outside our own experience and understand what wealth means to other people.

1. What is the author’s understanding of wealth?
A.It is more of a state of mind.
B.It gives one the duty to help others.
C.It has something to do with finance.
D.It lifts people’s spirits like nothing else.
2. What makes a person appreciate what he has already owned?
A.Winning people’s recognition.
B.Spending time helping others.
C.Making a deep impression on others.
D.Improving one’s interpersonal skills.
3. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Benefits of volunteering.B.Parents’ roles in a family.
C.Importance of social skills.D.Ways of being a volunteer.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.A Road to Real Wealth in LifeB.A Lesson in Wealth Management
C.A Different Way to Pursue HappinessD.A Life-changing Volunteering Experience

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the most beautiful motorbike and the first of its kind in the neighborhood, a magic blue one with two smart rear-view mirrors. It belonged to Ranjan’s uncle. Overnight, Ranjan had become a prince among us boys.

We surrounded him the next day, wanting to learn more details. Ranjan’s uncle had come from Bombay, riding the new motorbike. Every afternoon when he slept, we would gather around the blue bike, admiring it. Sometimes Ranjan managed to take out his uncle's red helmet (头盔). We would wear it in turn and sit on the bike, imagining starting it and being off. In the evenings, we watched Ranjan go out for a ride with his uncle and our eyes were filled with envy (羡慕).

One Monday morning I was struggling with the homework when Ranjan whispered in my ear, “I am learning to ride it, Tony.” “What?” I doubted. “I will show you this afternoon. ”Ranjan sounded confident.

Ranjan, like the rest of us, knew everything about the motorbike, every part of it. But to ride it was another story. Like all grown-ups, his uncle had this belief that fourteen-year-olds could not ride things like motorbikes. It is unfair really.

The big moment came at last. After lunch, I came to meet Ranjan, who appeared at the gate seconds later, wearing the red helmet. Noiselessly, he wheeled the bike out of the gate. He looked around carefully, pushed it down the road, and started it. “Get on, boy!”I felt excited as I climbed onto the back seat, but still could not believe that he could ride it. “Ready?”Ranjan shouted. “Yeah. What are you waiting for?”

We were off. The road was nearly empty and we were moving smoothly. I had a look at the speedometer (速度计): 30 kmph. How cool it was!

文章大意:本文是议论文。文章讨论了电子书和印刷书籍各自的优缺点,并对其未来做出预测。

6 . If having to make a choice between reading an e-book and a printed book, which would most people choose? Some would go for an e-book while some still prefer the hard-printed book.

Undoubtedly, e-books do have benefits. Firstly, changes to an electronic publication are relatively easy to make. They are quicker to obtain. E-books are more easily updated. The printed books on many subjects can become outdated very quickly. Secondly, e-books can be easily and quickly kept up to date. You usually get far more than just the e-books. Most e-books are sold with bonuses and related information that usually do not come with the purchase of a printed book. Moreover, they take up less space. Instead of a big library, you can fit literally thousands of books on your computer. It also makes it easier to share this information with families and friends.

For nearly twenty years, additionally, futurists have been predicting the development of printed books. The conventional view has been that digital e-books are on the verge of replacing paper books. However, this has not been the case. A printed book has its advantages too. Firstly, it is an object that can be carried and used alone. It needs no electric outlet (插座), no batteries, nothing. Secondly, e-books will always require some forms of support that the printed book does not need.

I believe that the online publishing has not taken off because people want real books. What is being published online more and more are pamphlets (小册子) and things that really do not need to be in print. These are stuff that people throw away afterward. More often, people do not want to read a book on the computer. What could be better than a paper book? It lasts a long time. These books are designed to last a long time without disappearing.

To sum up, there is no denying that the printed book is still very much preferred over its digital cousins. Reading electronic publications is just not the same when it comes to books. People are still very interested in real books and notebooks.

1. What can we know about an e-book?
A.It will never be out of date.B.It always gives you an added bonus.
C.It can deliver information quickly.D.It has taken the place of printed books.
2. Which statement would futurists probably agree with?
A.Printed books will disappear.B.Printed books can be used alone.
C.E-books have many restrictions.D.E-books have no drawbacks.
3. What is one cause of the failed online publishing?
A.The low demand for book industry.B.The expectations from people.
C.The guidance of policy.D.The desire for the printed books.
4. What does the author think of the future of the printed book?
A.Hopeless.B.Unpredictable.C.Costly.D.Promising.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。我们每一个人都可以为拯救地球保护环境做出自己的贡献。文章介绍了五种保护环境的做法。

7 . As global warming becomes more and more serious, each one of us must take action to help.

First, diet.

Changing what you eat could easily have a significant effect because animal agriculture creates about 14% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions (排放).     1     Each kilo consumed produces 26.5 kilos of CO2 emissions, five times more than chicken or turkey. Changing to plant-based diets could reduce emissions greatly.

Second, travel.

Nearly all transport relies on fossil fuels. In the US, driving one mile in an average 2016 car emits 404 grams of CO2 equivalents per mile. But taking nearly any other means of transport will reduce CO2 emissions.     2

Third, energy.

3     But a few quick changes can make a difference. Switch from incandescent (白炽灯) lights to LEDs. They use a quarter of the energy and last 25 times longer. And taking for showers, the average water heater is set to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. But bringing it down by 20 degrees can save 250 kilograms of CO2.

Fourth, waste.

Think before you buy. The fashion industry creates about 10% of global greenhouse emissions and consumes more energy than flight and shipping combined.     4     If you' re buying food, bring your own containers and just get the amount you need.

Last but not least, plant a garden.

Plant a garden instead of building a yard out of cement (水泥), the production of which creates 8% of global CO2 emissions a year.     5

So from a burger to a cyclist, no one thing will have a big influence, but lots of little things can.

A.Almost every household appliance needs it.
B.When you do make a purchase, try to buy it in large quantity.
C.Planting a garden helps reduce CO2 emissions and produce oxygen.
D.Each of us contributes a particular amount of CO2 into the atmosphere.
E.As we all know, the environment around us is getting worse and worse.
F.After walking, cycling is the best choice because it almost has no emissions.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了学识渊博且有责任心的Nzamujo博士回到非洲,设计“零浪费”农业系统,创立“松海”农场,帮助那里的人们缓解饥荒问题。

8 . Thirty-five years ago, with just one acre of land, a couple of seeds and a bucket of hope, one Nigerian-born scientist began his mission to defeat famine (饥荒) on his continent.

News of the drought across Africa in the early 1980s troubled Nzamujo. Equipped with a microbiology PhD and his faith, he travelled back to Africa. There, he found a continent ecologically rich, diverse and capable of producing food. He believes drought wasn’t the only reason for widespread hunger, and that sustainability had been left out.

Nzamujo began designing a “zero waste” agriculture system that would not only increase food security, but also help the environment and create jobs. In 1985, he started his sustainable farm “Songhai” in the West African country of Benin.

Nzamajo lives on the farm and constantly updates his techniques. He credits his degrees in science and engineering for Songhai’s success. But he also thanks his spiritual and cultural roots, and his father — a driving force in his life who encouraged him to pursue his studies to the highest degree and to use Songhai to share his knowledge.

Songhai has several “eco-literacy” development programs. They range from 18-month training courses for farmer-enterprisers, to shorter stays to learn techniques like weeding. People come from all over the world to study Nzamujo’s methods.

After seeing success on his first zero waste farm, he expanded throughout Benin and western Africa. Today, the Songhai model is applied across the continent, including Nigena. Uganda, Sierra Leone and Liberia, Nzamujo says they've trained more than 7.000 farmer-enterprisers and more than 30, 000 people in total since it began.

Nzamujo believes zero waste agriculture is now steadily tackling the issues he set out to defeat, hunger, unemployment and environmental declines. And he wants to see it go further.

1. Which factor related to famine was unnoticed in Nzamujo’s eyes?
A.Poor soil.B.Water shortage.
C.Lack of resources.D.Unsustainability.
2. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A.Introduce a solution.B.Give examples to the readers.
C.Add some background information.D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
3. How does Songhai help to ease the problem of famine?
A.By offering land.B.By trading seeds.
