文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍的是什么是“巴黎综合征”和如何克服去一个新国家所面临的冲击。

1 . Paris is full of cultural significance. Yet, despite its wealth of cultural hotspots and architectural delights, some tourists who explore the City of Light experience “Paris syndrome (巴黎综合征), a psychological condition that often results in nausea (恶心) and increased heart rates. An interesting phenomenon is that Paris syndrome is “most common among Japanese tourists”. Why?

Many Japanese visitors go with a deeply romantic picture of Paris----the beauty of French women, the high culture and art. But when the reality of the modern city of Paris sets in, with its seemingly unfriendly service and confusing public transport, some tourists simply find their hope falling through.

“An encounter with a Parisian waiter who shouts at customers might be laughed off by those from other Western cultures. But for the Japanese —used to a society where politeness is valued and voices are rarely raised in anger-----the experience of their dream city turning into a nightmare (噩梦) can simply be too much,” said Rodanthi Tzanelli, a professor of cultural sociology.

So Paris syndrome should be regarded as an extreme form of culture shock, which is an illness resulting from the loss of meaning when people find themselves in a different symbolic reality, according to Rachel Irwin, a senior researcher. The symptoms (症状) associated with culture shock are similar to those experienced by someone who is feeling anxious. According to the analysis (分析) of Calm Clinic, a mental health resource platform, when someone is experiencing anxiety, signals that are related to the fight or flight response will be sent to the stomach. The signals change the way the body processes food, causing nausea.

Besides, Tzanelli points out that the syndrome is not specific to Paris and nobody can be free of culture shock as long as they go to new places. The syndrome is likely a “general phenomenon”, as younger generations tend to travel to different countries, and are likely to be more aware of what they’ll encounter at a destination. Therefore, they’re unlikely to be bitterly disappointed when they’re there.

1. Why do Japanese tourists experience great discomfort in Paris?
A.Paris lacks real historical and cultural hotspots.
B.Paris fails to meet their romantic expectations.
C.They find Paris’ public transport less modern.
D.They cannot adapt to the local climate.
2. What does Rodanthi Tzanelli aim to explain in paragraph 3?
A.How culture influences the behavior of tourists.
B.How Japanese tourists react to Paris syndrome.
C.Why Paris syndrome particularly strikes the Japanese.
D.Why the Japanese value politeness and avoid conflicts.
3. What does Calm Clinic’s analysis stress?
A.People’s inability to adapt to new cultures.
B.The methods of overcoming culture shock.
C.People’s varied attitudes to different cultures.
D.The physical discomfort caused by culture shock.
4. What will be the author’s advice on overcoming Paris syndrome?
A.To be prepared for new encounters in advance.
B.To focus on the positive aspects of a destination.
C.To visit new places together with young people.
D.To avoid going to unfamiliar destinations.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At 6 pm in the mall on Christmas Eve, I was tired from my part-time job as an elf (精灵) helping Santa with kids’ photos to earn money during the December of my sixteenth year.

Everyone was very busy. I looked over at Shelly, our manager, and she gave me an encouraging smile. Instead of angrily shouting at her workers, she always positively encouraged us and stood behind us. Under her leadership, we had achieved the highest number of mall photo sales in California.

I knew it was a difficult holiday season for her —she was experiencing a family crisis. I hoped she knew how great she was and what a difference she had made to her workers and all little children coming to have their pictures taken.

Our Santa booth(摊位)was open until seven. At six, things started slowing down and I finally took a break. Although I didn’t have much money, I really wanted to buy a little gift for Shelly so that she’d know we appreciated her support.

I got to a store just as they locked the door. “We’re closed!” cried the tired clerk. I looked around, noticing all the stores had already closed. I was really upset. I had been working all day and had missed buying her a present by one minute.

On my way back to the Santa booth, I saw Nordstrom was still open. Fearful that they would also close at any moment, I hurried inside and toward the Gift Gallery. I found other shoppers were all well-dressed and wealthy; I was a poor teenager in an elf costume. How could I find anything under fifteen dollars in such an elegant store?

A saleswoman came over, asking if she could help me. Then, everyone in the department turned around and stared. Quietly, I said, “No, that’s okay. Just help somebody else.” She looked right at me, smiling, “But I want to help you. By the way, I’m Stephanie.”

文章大意:本文是记叙文。文章主要介绍了Dhruv Rebba发明了业余无线电。

4 . If Dhruv Rebba, an Indian American, had to live on a remote island, he would bring a ham radio kit (业余无线电设备) along. “The island wouldn’t have cellular connectivity (蜂窝数据连接), of course. Ham radio would be the best option to contact someone as it uses the ionosphere (电离层) to communicate instead of cellular towers. “That’s why we use it when mobile phone networks are destroyed during natural disasters,” he said in an interview.

When Rebba was nine, he received his ham radio technician license, becoming the youngest person of Indian origin then to receive it. “My dad has been a ham radio operator for the past 25 years. When I was in the third grade, I persuaded him to take me along to the Dayton Hamvention, where I was totally amazed by some cool stuff including Morse code keyers. From then on, I decided to go further in this field,” Rebba said.

In 2017, Rebba was part of the Amateur (业余的) Radio on the International Space Station(ARISS) project. It involves amateur radio operators across the world, speaking directly to astronauts through their radio stations. After three tries, I received the approval. As I have an amateur radio license, I was able to make my initial contact. 16 students across America were given the chance to ask Joseph M. Acaba, who was then on the International Space Station(ISS), 23 questions, Rebba explained.

Besides being a ham radio operator, Rebba is also the CEO of Universal Help Foundation. “I once visited my dad’s village in India where I noticed the gap in the standard of living. That’s what stimulated me to start Universal Help Foundation—to create an impact,” said Rebba. He named the foundation Universal Help Foundation rather than limiting it to environmental sustainability or disaster relief. Instead, he wanted to bridge the gap.

Meanwhile, Rebba hopes to get further high up in space. However, the overall picture of the ham radio field is unpleasant. “The ham population is aging and fewer youngsters are drawn to it. Now we all have cell phones and the younger crowd doesn’t see the everyday use of ham radio as important,” Rebba added.

1. What characterizes ham radio?
A.Being able to connect to cellular towers.B.Being a reliable means of communication.
C.Being effective in predicting natural disasters.D.Being quick to repair a broken mobile network.
2. How would Rebba describe the experience of visiting the Dayton Hamvention?
A.Boring.B.Moving.C.Confusing.D.Inspiring.
3. Why did Rebba start Universal Help Foundation?
A.To improve the lives of the poor.B.To raise people’s environmental awareness.
C.To provide disaster relief for remote villages.D.To strengthen the connections among villagers.
4. What is Rebba’s main concern?
A.Ham radio has become a dying hobby.B.Ham radio is useless in certain situations.
C.Young people are addicted to cell phones.D.Young people attach little importance to technology.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,主要介绍了孟加拉国为在汛期种植粮食而建造的浮动花园。

8 . Bangladesh’s floating gardens, built to grow food during flood seasons, could offer a continuous solution for parts of the world which are likely to suffer from flooding because of climate change, a new study has found.

Bangladesh’s floating gardens began hundreds of years ago. The gardens are made from native plants that float in the rivers and operate almost like rafts (筏), rising and falling with the waters. Historically, they were used to continue growing food during rainy seasons when rivers were filled with water.

But as climate change caused floods, the researchers wanted to know whether Bangladesh’s floating gardens could be a continuous farming practice. They interviewed farming families and found strong evidence that floating gardens provide stability, both in the amount of food to feed rural people and in a farming family’s income.

They found that farmers usually use hybrid (杂交植物) seeds, which must be bought each year, to grow different vegetables in the floating gardens. The gardens are also sensitive to pests so farmers end up spending some money on both pesticides (杀虫剂). But even with these expenses, they found, benefits outweighed costs. One farmer told the research team that he earns up to four times as much money from the gardens as from traditional rice fields.

However, before making money, farmers often take out high-interest loans to cover the investment costs. Luckily, there are also lower-interest loans from responsible government or non-governmental organizations, which could ease that burden.

1. What did the new study find about Bangladesh’s floating gardens?
A.They could grow more food during floods.
B.They protect Bangladesh from being flooded.
C.They provide places to grow food in rainy seasons.
D.They serve as a temporary (暂时的) way to grow food.
2. What might be a reply from farming families mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.“Our life becomes tough when rivers flood.”
B.“Fewer vegetables are planted when water rises.”
C.“We harvest much more food during rainy seasons.”
D.“Climate change has little influence on our income.”
3. What does the underlined word "outweighed" in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Affected.B.Brought.C.Beat.D.Equaled
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?

9 . Millions of people pass through the gates of the Disney parks in California, Tokyo and Shanghai each year. What makes these places almost universal attractions? What makes foreign kings and queens and other important people want to visit these Disney parks? Well, one reason is the way Disney serves their “guests”.

All new employees, from vice-presidents to part-time workers, begin their employment by attending Disney University and taking “Traditions”. Here, they learn about the company’s history how it is managed and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how their part is important in making the park a success.

After passing “Traditions”, the employees go on to more specialized training for their specific jobs. No detail is missed. A simple job like taking tickets requires eight-hour days of training. When one ticket taker was asked why it took so much training for such a simple, ordinary job, he replied, “What happens if someone wants to know where the restrooms are, when the parade starts or which bus to take back to the campgrounds? We need to know the answers or where to get them quickly. Our constant aim is to help our guests enjoy themselves.”

Even Disney’s managers get involved in the daily management of the park. Every year, the managers leave their desks and business suits and put on special service clothes. For a full week, the bosses sell hot dogs or ice cream, take tickets or drive the monorail, and take up any of the 100 jobs that make the park come alive. “It means a lot,” one of them said, “Allowing us to see a bigger picture.”

All these efforts to serve the public well have made Walt Disney famous. Disney is considered by many as the best mass service provider in America or the world.

1. What do all new employees do on the first day they come to Disney parks?
A.Receiving staff training.B.Leaning job-related skills.
C.Being the ticket takers.D.Looking around the park.
2. What is the main aim of the Disney employees?
A.To do as many jobs as they could.B.To help the guests have a great time.
C.To be able to answer various questions.D.To keep the important guests happy.
3. Why do Disney’s managers join the park’s daily management?
A.Because they are able to sell more hot dogs and ice cream.
B.Because there is a serious lack of junior employees.
C.Because it helps them to see the company’s goal more clearly.
D.Because they want to change the way of marketing Disney.
4. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.How Disney employees are trained.B.What traditions Disney parks own.
C.Why Disney parks make a profit.D.Why Disney parks are popular.
