文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了线上零售商巨头亚马逊新开的首家实体店Amazon Go及其运作方式。

1 . On Monday, December 5, online retailing (零售) giant Amazon announced the opening of its first physical store. Called Amazon Go, the Seattle-based store that is currently being tested by company employees, learns from regular grocery stores except for one thing — “Just Walk Out” technology. All purchases are handled electronically, which means there are no cashiers, checkouts or lines. Shoppers simply take what they need and leave.

To shop at Amazon Go, customers need to open an Amazon account and download the store’s App onto their smartphones. Upon entering the store, they scan a QR code (二维码) with their phones and begin shopping. Every item picked up gets added to the bill automatically. If the customer changes his/her mind, all he/she has to do is return the purchase back on the shelf, and it will be removed from the final bill. Once the customer leaves the store, the amount spent is automatically taken out from the Amazon account and a digital receipt is generated to remind the shopper of the trade.

To provide busy customers a pleasant shopping experience, Amazon, which has been working on this concept for four years, plans to keep the store size at a “comfortable” 1,800 square feet. In addition to typical grocery products like bread and milk, the store will stock ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch and dinner options, made by on-site chefs. There will also be chef-designed Amazon Meal boxes for those who prefer to cook the food at home.

After years of joint efforts by Amazon staff, Amazon Go finally opened in 2021. Amazon will not provide any insight into the cutting-edge “Just Walk Out” technology. The company website states, “The checkout-free shopping experience is enabled by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning.”

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者的母亲患阿尔茨海默病后吃饭出现问题,而志愿者们帮助作者一家解决了这一问题的故事。

2 . My mom could be quite a handful, which I have come to see as a blessing as the years have gone by but did not always appreciate when she was alive, especially after her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

The news came as no surprise to us kids, of course. We’d seen our tough, sharp-witted mom change. But Mom was not about to take Alzheimer’s lying down. “There’s nothing wrong with me!” she insisted, even after she sideswiped a cop, denied doing it and then blamed it all on him.

Eventually my brother and his wife moved Mom to a sweet little house on the property next to theirs so they could keep an eye on her. They built a lighted path between the two houses so Mom could visit when she wanted, which occasionally happened at 5:00 a.m. when she thought it was 5:00 p.m. At Christmas, my sister-in-law, Toni, would hang Christmas lights along the way.

One thing we couldn’t do was make her eat properly, especially after she nearly burned the house down making tuna (金枪鱼) salad. So we arranged for a senior meals-on-wheels program to deliver her meals. At first she wouldn’t let them in the house. “This is ridiculous,” she said. “I know how to eat!” Then she offered to help them deliver meals to “people who really need them”.

Eventually she relented — except that she would simply keep all the meals in the fridge, untouched, in case she happened to have hungry visitors. When we told the volunteers this, they were wonderfully wise and pretty soon they got Mom to eat. She even admitted that the food was “pretty good, considering”. We’re convinced the good nutrition helped keep her in her home a little longer before she had to enter a care facility.

So how proud am I that our friends at Volunteers of America, which operates meals-on-wheels programs for the elderly all over the country? Very proud. It was angels, after all, who were able to get my mother to eat.

1. What do we know about the author’s mother?
A.She troubled the family a lot.B.She never suffered from Alzheimer.
C.She was a woman lacking intelligence.D.She was easy to get along with.
2. How did the family help Mom?
A.They lived together with her.B.They had her house beautifully decorated.
C.They assisted her in cooking matters.D.They arranged delivered meals for her.

A.Angels on WheelsB.A Lesson from Miserable Life
C.Living with AlzheimerD.Volunteering for the Disabled

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Kumar was a hard-working and ambitious student in Academic Magnet High School, who had a preference for the engineering design. One day he was walking home from school. Nothing pleased him more than to walk along the busy street and look at the glass doors of the shops. When doing so, he never failed to stop to look at the latest laptops in the computer shop. He was thinking. “I would love so much to own that laptop. But nobody will buy it for me.”

So Kumar thought hard of what to do. The school holiday was coming up next week. An idea struck him. He would do odd jobs to earn some money. Yes! That was what he would do.

His house is next to East Lake shore Drive in Chicago, where there stand varieties of cottages with beautiful gardens. It follows that he designed a plan of working in his neighbors’ gardens. First, he would approach them and ask them to let him clean up their gardens. After his finishing the job. each owner would probably pay him $50 or $ 60. Working in more than ten gardens would enable him to accumulate enough cash to buy his beloved laptop. Making up his mind triggered a feeling of joy and a brisk walk home.

The next day. he went around his neighborhood and asked the residents if he could clean their gardens. He asked them politely. “Excuse me. can I work in your garden during the school holiday?” Many of the owners were kind of curious about what Kumar was requiring and asked why. Having known about his thirsty for a laptop, they all replied “Yes”. They liked the courteous (有礼貌的) boy.

So Kumar started working in his first house. He woke up early that morning. He took three hours to clear the rubbish and cut the grass. It was not easy work. He had to mow the grass. After that, he had to pull the weeds. Then, he had to arrange the flowerpots. This arduous (艰巨的) work went on for a week. Consequently, he had no time for games or even watching television.

5 . According to conventional wisdom in the West, there was little formal law in China prior to the 20th century, and what did exist was completely penal (惩罚性的) in nature. In fact, this characterization wrongly states the law and legal institutions(法律制定)in pre-20th-century China.

Recent archaeological work suggests that law in China antedates (早于) the life and thought of the influential thinker Kongfuzi or Confucius(551-479 BCE). Yet Confucianism (儒家思想) is central to an understanding of pre-20th-century Chinese law. Confucianism held that the “five relationships”-those between ruler and subject, husband and wife, father and son, elder brother and younger brother, and friend and friend-are the foundation of a well-ordered society.

Confucians stressed that each individual should promote his inner virtue (de) and demonstrate filial piety (xiao), which enable him to maintain and strengthen these relationships and to properly meet the responsibilities that go with them, in Confucius’ words in the collection of sayings known as Lunyu,

If the people be led by laws...they will try to avoid punishment,

but have no sense of shame. If they be led by virtue...

they will have a sense of shame and moreover will become good.

The earliest imperial Chinese legal code (法典), that of the Qin dynasty (221-206 BCE), was made under Qin Shihuangdi, who was far more influenced by Legalism (法家思想), a philosophical school whose representative thinkers took human nature to be cruel. They believed accordingly that law would provide a more effective mechanism (机制) for social order than Confucian morality would. The Qin sought to destroy Confucianism-by burning texts and also scholars--but was unsuccessful. In fact, the Qin code reserved elements similar to Confucianism. The Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) filled the ranks of officialdom (官僚) with Confucian scholars and reconstructed and strengthened the five relationships. In a process that was called the “Confucianization of law,” the Han Code provided that offenses committed by juniors (e. g., sons) against their senior relations (e. g., fathers) should be punished more severely (严厉地) than the opposite, though according to Confucian thinking it would be better that morality should be observed and that no punishment need be invoked (援用).

1. What is mainly talked about in this passage?
A.The role of formal law in China before the 20th century.
B.The actual feature of Chinese law before the 20th century.
C.The difference between Confucianism and Legalism.

2. What does the cited sentences from Lunyu indicate?
A.“Five relationships” are the most difficult to maintain.
B.A society should carry out both Confucianism and Legalism.
C.Virtue is central to the foundation of a well-ordered society.
D.Punishment will result in people’s sense of shame.
3. The key difference between the Qin Code and the Han Code lies in ______.
A.the content of the five relationships
B.people’s responsibilities
C.the ranks of officialdom
D.the understanding of human nature
4. Which of the following does the author support?
A.Chinese law before the 20th century has a penal nature.
B.Confucianism plays a leading role in the pre-20th-century Chinese law
C.Everyone should develop his inner virtue and demonstrate filial piety.
D.A child offending his father should be punished more severely than the opposite.

6 . There is no such thing as a perfect woman, and Nothing but Thirty screenwriter Zhang Yingji wanted to convey this message in telling the stories of three different women, who have found very different ways to climb their own mountains.

Wang Manni is a woman who will climb any mountain as long as she finds it challenging. Zhong Xiaoqin is one who will only climb if she has someone to go along with her. She will not overexert herself, and she will definitely stop once she has reached a comfortable place. Gu Jia, on the other hand, has already started to think about reaching the peak before she even starts the climb, regardless of whether she is alone or has company.

In a sense, the scriptwriter purposely created Gu Jia as the perfect woman of thirty. She is married, with a successful husband and a young son. She is living the dream, but Gu Jia does not feel complete. She feels lost. She is flawed. She has episodes of succumbing to her own greed and disregard to those around her.

“She is someone who chases alter perfection.” said Tong Yao (who portrays Gu Jia). “Obviously, this is stressful for those around her. She hides things. She isn’t perfect, but in front of others, she has to stay perfect.”

Her chase for perfection and her stubbornness to maintain this image has effected many of the relationships in her life. She chases after what she believes is right for others. Because of this, she and her husband start to see and value things differently, which puts a strain on their relationship.

Gu Jia’s personal struggles give life to the character. Many viewers are able to relate to her, and, through her character, find a shadow of themselves. There’s still a lot left that we can learn from the women of Nothing but Thirty, but maybe like them, we too can find the courage in ourselves to walk on that road which is truly meant for us.

1. According to the article, which of the following best describes Zhong Xiaoqin’s personality?
A.Ambitious and goal-drivenB.Moderate and content
C.Aimless and impulsiveD.Visionary and independent
2. According to Paragraph 3, what is not true about Gu Jia’s life?
A.She has her own worries and insecurities.
B.She leads a seemingly perfect and enviable life.
C.She can be greedy and insensitive to others’ feelings.
D.She is discontented with life because of her husband.
3. According to the passage, audiences have a preference for Gu Jia mainly because she ________.
A.is a perfectionistB.stands up to her husband
C.balances her work and life wellD.displays some identifiable traits
4. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A.To call attention to the rise of feminism.
B.To introduce the plot of Nothing but Thirty.
C.To contrast the main characters of Nothing but Thirty.
D.To encourage viewers to find inspiration in Nothing but Thirty.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A few senior high students were going to Fort Lauderdale with sandwiches and drinks in the paper bags, dreaming of the golden beaches as the gray cold of New York vanished behind them. As the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice a man, who sat in front of them, dressed in a plain, ill-fitting suit, never moving, his dusty face masking his age. He fixed his eyes on the photo in his hands, frozen into some personal cocoon of silence.

Deep into the night, outside Washington, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson’s, and everybody got off except the man. He sat rooted in his seat, and the students began to wonder about him, trying to imagine his life: perhaps he was a sea captain, a runaway from his wife, an old soldier going home. When they went back to the bus, one of the students sat beside him and introduced himself.

“We’re going to Florida,” the student said brightly. “I hear it’s really beautiful.”

“It is,” the man said quietly, as if remembering something he had tried to forget.

“Want some bread?” the student said. He smiled and took a piece. He thanked him and retreated again into his silence. After a while, the man told his story slowly and painfully.

His name was Vingo, he had been in prison in New York for the past four years, and now he was going home. “ When I was in prison I wrote to my wife,” he said “I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldn’t stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, if it hurt too much, she could just forget me, I’d understand,”

“Last week, knowing I would be free, I wrote her again. We used to live in Brunswick and there’s a big oak tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she would take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I’d get off and come home with her. If she didn’t accept me, forget it, no handkerchief, and I’d go on through.”

“Wow,” the student exclaimed and gazed at the photo in his hands. All the other students were into it.

9 . For most people, life has become a burden on their shoulders, and its weight is growing heavier and heavier, until one day they can’t carry it anymore. So how can we design a life that is less complex and more meaningful? With minimalism (极简主义).     1     The following ways will assist you in your journey to living a simper yet fuller life.

2     Most people’s living space is filled with things that are never used and don’t contribute to their well-being. Separate the ones you do need from the ones you don’t, and throw the latter right into the dustin — or better, give them away to people who might actually benefit from them.

Appreciate all the amazing things you already have. We constantly compare ourselves to others who seem happier, more beautiful and more important than us. We try our best to imitate those we envy.     3     We need to stop comparing and accept ourselves for who we are, with all our imperfections. Take a moment to appreciate what you have.

Do one thing at a time. Minimalist living actually means making the most out of each and every moment. We’re usually carrying out different tasks at the same time. So whatever we are doing, our mind is partly wondering somewhere else.     4

Develop mindfulness.     5     Thus you need to develop mindfulness. Mindfulness means fully attending to what’s happening in the present. There are many ways one can do so. Perhaps the most common way is to sit for about 30 minutes somewhere comfortably with your upper back straight and pay full attention to your breath as it’s coming in and out through your nose. In this way, you won’t be distracted by your thoughts.

A.It is about enjoying life more with less.
B.Stop consuming products you don’t need.
C.Yet no matter how much we try, we always fail.
D.Get rid of things that don’t serve your happiness.
E.minimalist living requires a calm and undisturbed mind.
F.Stop multitasking and concentrate on a single thing at a time.
G.Unfortunately, our minds are filled with worries in our busy lives.
