Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.

“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”

“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to a party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not toinvite Lucy to the party. ”“She never even talks to me! ”

Dad sighed and moved down the aisle ( 走廊). “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her old friends behind and now she has to try to make new friends. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone. ”

“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!" Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes (翻白眼).

“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!"

On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope (缰绳).

Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing (想象)various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy. The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

Reflections of Hope in the Snowstorm

I was homesick. My husband, Keith, was attending Utah State University in Logan, Utah. We lived eight hundred miles away from my parents and family in California. We couldn’t afford to go home for Christmas. We would just stay home in Hyrum.

Then a most unexpected gift arrived in a Christmas card: enough money for gas for the eight- hundred-mile drive home. We were so excited. Keith took time off from his part-time job and we packed the car. We prayed for safety and good traveling conditions.

We drove all day to the west coast of California. Everything went well and we finally drove up the familiar driveway, honking(按喇叭)the horn to signal our arrival. My family rushed out to greet us, welcoming us with love and Christmas cheer. We celebrated Christmas in my childhood home, all of us together again for the first time in three years. All too soon. the time came for us to return to Utah. My parents gave us some money for gas. With tears and hugs. we started on our way. Hoping to make good time. we drove steadily through the day.

Toward evening, snow flurries swirled (盘旋飞舞)around the car. We stopped just long enough to fuel up the car. With no credit card and very little cash, we did not even consider staying overnight in a motel.

If the road and weather conditions were good. we had about two hours of driving to get to Salt Lake City, where we could just make it to Keith’s parents’ home that night for a rest. Then we could go on to Hyrum in the morning, and he would make it to work on time. We drove into the darkening night. Snow swirled wildly about the car. Keith was having trouble seeing the road, as the headlights seemed dim. He pulled over, and got out to brush the snow away from them.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要分析了博尔特为什么能跑得过双冠龙的原因。

7 . If you were just going by the 1993 film Jurassic Park (侏罗纪公园), you might think that the Dilophosaurus (双冠龙) was pretty fast. But was it fast enough to beat Usain Bolt in a 100-meter dash?

That’s the question that University of Toledo physicist Scott Lee posed to his students. Lee says, “I’m always looking for new and interesting things that will excite the students, so I try and bring these concepts into the classroom.”

Plenty of other scientists have been just as fascinated by the biomechanics (生物力学) of dinosaur movement. For example, scientists created a 3D reconstruction of a T-rex tail to calculate that the animal likely moved at just under 3 mph according to a paper published in 2021.

Lee points to the variety of approaches that researchers can use to model such predictions. “We have the bones from many dinosaurs; with the Dilophosaurus and T-rex, we have essentially complete skeletons, he says. “ By looking at modern animals, you can get an idea of how big the muscles were. Then you can calculate how big of a force you could apply to the legs of a dinosaur to... model how fast it would go.”

For many students just starting to learn about physics, the difference between speed and acceleration isn’t always intuitive (直观的). “They tend to think of that as being the same thing-if you accelerate fast, you’re going to go fast,” says Lee“.   but they’re actually very separate concepts.”

In his class, Lee wanted to create a situation where the speeds between two subjects were roughly the same, but because the accelerations were different, so was the outcome. They ultimately concluded that Bolt would easily outrun Dilophosaurus. leaving it in the dust   by two seconds.

As Lee emphasized to his class the key factor was indeed acceleration. Following Newton’s second law of motion, where acceleration is dependent upon an object’s mass (质量) and force, Bolt’s smaller size would give him an early leg up. Lee says, “The bigger something gets and its acceleration becomes less. Dilophosaurus is so much heavier than Bolt, so it accelerates a lot slower.”

1. Why did Scott Lee raise the question in Paragraph 1 to his students?
A.To bring in a new concept
B.To meet his curiosity
C.To arouse students’ interest.
D.To beat an Olympic gold medalist
2. Which of the following is true according to the Passage ?
A.Lee made a 3D reconstruction of a T-rex tail to calculate its speed.
B.Modern animals’ muscles are about the same size as those of dinosaurs.
C.Lee’s students considered speed and acceleration to be very different concepts.
D.Lee wanted to choose two objects with almost the same speed for his class.
3. What can we learn from Lee’s words in Paragraph 7?
A.Because of his smaller size, Bolt accelerates faster
B.An object’s mass partly depends on its acceleration
C.The bigger something becomes, the faster it accelerates.
D.Dilophosaurus’ acceleration has nothing to do with its mass.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The difference between speed and acceleration.
B.The reason why Bolt can outrun a Dilophosaurus.
C.The application of Newton’s second law of motion.
D.An interesting and exciting class taught by Scott Lee.
