3 . China’s Cargo Spacecraft Sets New World Record

The Tianzhou 5 cargo spacecraft launched on November 12th docked with the Tiangong space station around noon, setting a world record for the fastest rendezvous and docking operations between the two spacecraft, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

The Tianzhou 5 was placed into a low-Earth orbit by a Long March 7 rocket that blasted off at 10:03 a.m. at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan Province.

After cargo craft entered the orbit, it traveled two hours and seven minutes to rendezvous (交会对接) with the Tiangong space station and then docked with the massive station at 12:10 p.m., the agency said in a news release.

The maneuvers have become the fastest rendezvous and docking processes for spacecraft, replacing the old record set by the Russian spacecraft Soyuz MS-17 on October 14th, 2020, when it used three hours and three minutes since its liftoff to rendezvous and connect with the International Space Station.

The manned space agency said the fast rendezvous and docking are key to establishing the capability to transport supplies to the space station in an emergency.

The cargo ship is carrying about 5.3 metric tons of materials, including living and mission necessities, scientific equipment as well as a mini experimental satellite. The craft also carries nearly 1.4 tons of propellants for the Tiangong station, the designers said.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要讲述美国国家航天局完成了让太空飞船撞击小行星的测试,成功使小行星偏转,这是世界上首次进行行星防御试验。

4 . On September 26, 2022, NASA successfully completed its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission by intentionally crashing an unmanned spacecraft into the asteroid(小行星) Dimorphos. The goal was not to destroy the asteroid but to change its orbit. With the successful mission, NASA proved the concept that this technique could keep a potentially dangerous asteroid from crashing into Earth in the future.

Dimorphos is a small asteroid orbiting the larger asteroid Didymos. NASA noted that Dimorphos is not a threat to Earth, but because it passes relatively close to Earth, it was chosen as the target for the test mission.

Although the intended crash should change the asteroid’s position slightly, it will add to a major shift over time. “If you were going to do this for planetary defense, you would do it 5, 10, 15, or 20 years in advance for this technique to work,” said NASA program executive Andrea Riley. “This is why we test. We want to do it now rather than when there’s an actual need.”

Asteroids can pose a significant threat to planet Earth. For example, around 66 million years ago, an asteroid around 6 to 9 miles across struck the Earth in what is now the Yucatan Peninsula. The resulting impact was so catastrophic(灾难性的) that it caused one of the largest extinction events in Earth’s history. Therefore, DART’s success is an important step forward in protecting the planet from potential damage from an asteroid. This shows humans are no longer powerless to prevent this type of natural disaster.

The DART spacecraft was launched by NASA on November 24, 2021. It was accompanied by another craft called LICIACube, supplied by the Italian Space Agency, and separated from DART just 15 days before the crash. LICIACube remained in orbit around the asteroid and took photographs of the crash and material ejected(弹出) from the asteroid’s surface.

1. What is the purpose of the DART mission?
A.To destroy Dimorphos completely.
B.To change the orbit of Dimorphos.
C.To track potentially dangerous asteroids.
D.To prevent Dimorphos from hitting the Earth.
2. How can we describe the test according to Andrea Riley?
A.Better late than never.
B.Rob Peter to pay Paul.
C.Prepare for a rainy day.
D.Bark up the wrong tree.
3. Why does the author mention the example in paragraph 4?
A.To prove the significance of DART’s success.
B.To present the effect of the largest extinction events on humans.
C.To explain the difficulty of protecting the Earth from asteroid strikes.
D.To show the necessity of conducting research on natural disasters.
4. What is LICIACube intended for?
A.Recording the crash test with photos.
B.Collecting rock samples from Dimorphos’s surface.
C.Providing additional energy for the DART spacecraft.
D.Increasing the force of crashing the DART spacecraft into Dimorphos.

6 . Metin Sitti at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, Germany, and his colleagues have developed tiny robots called “microrollers” that can carry cancer drugs and selectively target human breast cancer cells. The team drew inspiration for the design of the robots from white blood cells in the human body, which can move along the walls of blood vessels (血管) against the direction of blood flow.

The microrollers are round and made from glass microparticles. One half of the robot was coated with a thin magnetic nanofilm (磁性纳米膜) made from nickel and gold. The other half was coated with the cancer drug doxorubicin as well as molecules that recognize cancer cells.

The team tested the robots using mouse blood and artificial channels lined with human endothelial cells—the kind of cells that line the inner walls of our blood vessels. The robots were exposed to a mixture of cancerous and healthy tissue. The microrollers selectively attached to the cancer cells and were activated using UV light to release the doxorubicin.

By applying magnetic fields, the team was able to control the movement of the microrollers, both with and against the flow of blood. The microrollers can reach a speed of up to 600 micrometers per second. “If you come to a spot where you need to take the right path and if you miss it, then you could go back and go to the right one,” says Setti.

In future, the researchers want to use other methods to start the drug release, such as heat or near-infrared light. They also plan to try making microrollers out of materials that would break down in the body over a few weeks or months.

The team hopes to test the microrollers in animals soon. “The rollers need to carry enough cancer drugs, which is why we need to have them in large numbers,” says Setti. “But since we can locally take drugs to the right target, we don’t need huge dosages (剂量).”

1. What can the microrollers be used for?
A.Repairing blood cells.B.Delivering drugs.C.Improving blood flow.D.Performing operations.
2. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the microrollers?
A.Their shape.B.Their advantage.C.Their design.D.Their application.
3. What can we learn about the robots from Paragraph 4?
A.Their direction can be adjusted.B.They might miss the target cells.
C.They might get stuck in the blood.D.Their speed can change automatically.
4. What will the scientists probably do next?
A.Put the microrollers to clinical use.B.Sell the microrollers in large quantities.
C.Tear the microrollers down in the body.D.Experiment with the microrollers further.

7 . We’re frequently told that our attention problem-being easily distracted-result from modern technology. If we truly want to focus, according to the popular belief, we need to turn off all our digital devices and quit social media.

Here’s my opinion about that idea. This era(时代)is no different than any other-there has always been a “crisis of attention”. Think about life long ago: people in ancient India or Europe didn’t have smartphones and social media, but they were faced with the same problem.

A crisis of attention can happen anytime you don’t allow yourself a break-when you don’t allow your mind to daydream, which may inspire your creativity. We are always engaged in something. With these digital tools at our fingertips, we have constant access to all these forms of communication, content, and interaction, and we don’t let our thoughts wander(漫游)freely. When was the last time you stood in line at a store and just…looked around? Thought about whatever came to your mind? Or did you pull out your phone, check your texts, read your email during that time?

We all do it. We catch ourselves all the time going from one type of mental engagement to the next. Like surfing online (clicking from link to link), we go from one task to the next and the next. We are “all task and no downtime”. Even something you might think of as relaxing is more engagement. Checking your phone messages may seem “fun”, but it’s just another task for your attention. Your attention is focused on task after task after task, without a moment for the mind to wander freely.

It’s not always realistic to unplug. We can’t just turn off our phones and pause our email. We can’t create a distraction-free world. The problem is not the existence(存在)of modern technology; rather, it’s how we’re using it.

1. Why does the author mention people in ancient India?
A.To argue against the popular belief.
B.To discuss the benefits of technology.
C.To suggest a solution to the attention problem.
D.To show the seriousness of the attention problem.
2. Which is an example of “downtime” according to the author?
A.Chatting with friends.B.Reading a newspaper.
C.Sitting back doing nothing.D.Checking phone messages.
3. What does the underlined word “unplug” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Work long hours.B.Improve technology.
C.Stop using digital devices.D.Balance work and leisure.
4. Which section of a website is the text most likely from?
A.Culture.B.Fashion.
C.History.D.Opinion.
