I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would finish in the bottom half. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end.
Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3,000-meter challenge in my city — at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or come close to winning.
I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their fanilies to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship.
It was a heartwarming program.I wanted to support it, so I showed up, paid the entrance fee, had a number pinned (把……别住) on my back, and moved over to the starting line. There, I waited with about 300 other runners for the race to begin. I was nervous. Would I be the last one to finish a race again? Could I even finish the race? I wondered.
Before long, someone spoke into a microphole, “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale (秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale. A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number that was on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so,and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.
Not expecting the award, I ran towards the starting line, never realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.

2 . Being fit and healthy doesn’t mean you have to work out for hours a day and eat nothing but chicken and vegetables for every meal.
You always complain you are too busy to go to the gym or to prepare a healthy meal.
You should walk more instead of driving a car when going out. The key to lifelong fitness is to simply be more active and walk more every day. Try your best to walk whenever and wherever you can —to the superstore, to the office, or go for an after-dinner walk with your family.
Instead of always going to the movies or watching TV, you should take part in activities that keep you moving. You can go for a bike ride, go on a hike, or go to play sports with your family and friends, such as ping-pong and basketball.

3 . More educators and researchers are bringing attention to misinformation (错误信息) through the internet and social media. Teaching media literacy (素养) can be a problem. Those against teaching internet literacy say it’s the same as thought control, which prevents some teachers from using it in class.
Erin, a mother from Massachusetts who has worked as a reporter, said that media literacy is a skill as important as computer engineering for the economy. She created a nonprofit group called Media Literacy Now to support digital literacy education. “Basic communication is part of our information economy, and there will be huge implications for our economy if we don’t get this right,” she said.
Shawn Lee. who teaches social studies in Seattle, Washington, has taught about double -checking online reports, getting information from more than a few places and using critical (批评的) thinking. He also created an organization for teachers to share experiences.
Teaching internet literacy to fight misinformation may be more effective than new laws. Some US states have added new standards for teaching internet literacy. Subjects can include how the internet and social media work, how to find misinformation by looking at many sources. Other ways of identifying misinformation might include looking for missing background information or recognizing emotional headlines.
Media and internet literacy is taught around the world. Finland and Canada have developed programs over the years to teach young people about the media. The goal is to get young people to understand what in the news and on the internet is a fact, and what isn’t.
Media and internet literacy is often compared to driver’s education. “We need speed limits, we need well designed roads and good regulations to ensure cars are safe. But we also teach people how to drive safely,” a director of education Johnson said.
This combination of government, industry and educators is considered the model that is needed for internet and media literacy. Education is needed for an effective answer to fight internet misinformation.

7 . Travel is not only beneficial to our minds, bodies, and souls, but it will be important to many countries and communities that rely on tourism dollars to make ends meet. Now I’d like to go a bit more in depth with strategies for travelers to leave less of a mess behind.
Pack with great care. How you pack sets the tone for how you will interact with the place you visit. Take as little as you can. Pack useful things like a large scarf or a quick-dry towel that can double as a blanket, pillow, or sun guard.
Save water and energy. Paying for the hotel room doesn’t mean you should waste the resources.
Avoid single-use plastic. When hanging out, carry a cloth shopping bag for any purchases.

E.Treat it as you do in your own home. |
F.Carry a water bottle to avoid single-use plastic bottles. |
G.This is an important yet often overlooked aspect of travel. |
8 . Triantha Occidentalis, commonly known as the western false asphodel (西部假水仙), which has been known to science since 1879, is a herb-like plant found in abundance along North America’s West Coast. But it is only recently that researchers discovered the innocent-looking plant’s desire for insects.
“We had no idea it was carnivorous (食肉的),” says botanist Sean Graham. “This was not found in some exotic tropical location, but really right on our doorstep in Vancouver. You could exactly walk out from Vancouver to this field site.”
While studying the plant, the researchers noticed that Triantha Occidentalis lacked the same gene as other carnivorous plants. Since the plant grows in the same wet, sunny habitat with nutrient-poor soil as other carnivorous plants, they wondered if it caught insects for nutrition as well. “And at the same time they have sticky stems (茎),” Graham said. “So, I wonder if this could be a sign that it might be carnivorous.”
To test whether it is carnivorous, scientists marked fruit flies with nitrogen-15 isotopes (氮-l5同位素). By collecting the plants the fruit flies visited and comparing the nitrogen levels of different plants, the researchers found that Triantha Occidentalis was able to get more than half of the nitrogen it needed, suggesting that it absorbs nitrogen from the fruit flies. Additionally, the digestive enzyme (消化酶) released by the sticky hairs in flower stems was similar to that found in other carnivorous plants.
Usually, the deadly trap of carnivorous plants grow far away from the flower to prevent accidentally killing pollinators (授粉者), while the western false asphodel traps insects near flowers. The scientists say this is the first time they have met the deadly trap on the flower’s stem, and the sticky hairs on the stem of Triantha Occidentalis can only catch small insects, not the larger bees or butterflies involved in pollination.
“It’s a good reminder that we still don’t know much about the ecology of a lot of individual plant species, even in well-known environments,” says Dr. Qianshi Lin.

9 . Dennis Prescott, a famous Canadian chef and cookbook author, understands the very essence of cooking. His practice is based on making people happy with food that inspires joy at the table. Naturally, it took Prescott time and work to achieve a level of freedom and joy in the kitchen.
As a struggling musician living in Nashville, TN, he learned how to cook by working his way through several Jamie Oliver cookbooks. But he soon realized that food, rather than music, was his actual passion and he threw himself into creating delicious recipes. Working alongside chefs in various restaurants leads him to travel the world as a chef and finally become the master he is today.
“Mastery takes years,” stresses the chef. “The best chefs in the world are the best because they’ve put years of work to get to a place where something comes naturally to them like second nature. And they still fail often, because they’re constantly pushing their own creativity in the kitchen.”
Besides the actual cooking, Prescott’s success is also owed to his online presence. His Instagram account is full of photos of mouth-watering food and appealing recipes that will inspire you, at the very least, to order some takeout. “When I started, I simply thought all I’d have to focus on was food,” he says. “Wrong. Should you aspire to be the best chef? Absolutely! That said, I spend much more time working on account receivables and on meetings than I do in the kitchen.”
When asked what is his advice to other aspiring cooks, he said, “There is no special pill or secret to success. Just put your head down, work hard and put in the time. In the end, the risk will pay off.”
1. How did Prescott learn to cook at first?A.By copying other cooks on social media. | B.By learning cooking skills from cookbooks. |
C.By doing cooking in various restaurants. | D.By getting special recipes from a musician. |
A.They work years to avoid failure. | B.They have second nature to be cooks. |
C.They are creative and practice constantly. | D.They usually have their own kitchen. |
A.Spending time on account receivables. | B.Ordering some takeout online. |
C.Longing to be the best chef. | D.Focusing all on food. |
A.They should face up to failure. | B.They should seek the secret of recipes. |
C.The practice of cooking should come first. | D.Cooking should be combined with music. |
