5 . In many ways, Gitanjali Rao is an ordinary 11-year-old, lively and chatty, yet her scientific spirit makes a huge difference. Last month, she _________ the top prize at the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for her invention.

6 . There have been countless books on living with teenagers, yet parents don’t seem to have _________ how to get their children to pick up their clothes from the bedroom floor. It might be difficult to accept, but a new approach to dealing with difficult teenagers is for parents to look at their own _________.

“The key to getting teenagers to respect you is to respect them first,” says Penny Palmano, who has written a best-selling book on teenagers. “You can’t _________ to treat them the same way that you have been treating them for the previous years. Imagine if you’d spent two hours getting ready to go out for the evening and someone said, ‘You’re not going out looking like that, are you?’ You’d be very _________. 7 . It was Fiona Garcia’s father that got her to love reading. As a teacher, he read to his two children every night. When Fiona, now 56, ________ an elementary school teacher, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. 8 . About 8 years ago, Allen Smith, a company manager and active sport-lover, was riding his bike in Aberdeen, Scotland, when he thought about a friend’s 10-year-old son. The boy had ________ known the joy of biking because he ________ brain swelling (脑积液) that often caused ________ problem.

When he got home, Allen, now 48, went online and found a three-wheeled bike with a seat belt, ________ for a child with balance issues. 10 . Once upon a time, my father and I got lost in a forest in France. I must have been about twelve or thirteen. Anyway, it was before the time when most people ________ a mobile phone.
