文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要就如何戒掉网瘾提出了一些建议。

1 . How to Avoid an Internet Addiction

It may seem like everyone surfs the web these days. But if you can’t have interest in other aspects of your life because of the Internet, you may be on your way to an Internet addiction. You might fear you’re the only one who has experienced that feeling.    1     Luckily, there are some ways to avoid living your life in front of the computer.

    2

More and more people in the world are becoming addicted to the Internet, and you are not the only one with this problem. So do not be embarrassed. Just be brave to admit that you are on your way to an Internet addiction. And then find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.

Set aside limited time for computer use.

Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that you can remember but not somewhere that you see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it.     3       If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet.

Call people instead of sending instant messages or texts.

If you are free on weekends, call friends and ask them to go outside to do something you enjoy, like playing a sport. This will take your mind off the computer.     4

Use an alarm clock or timer (计时器).

Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get away from the computer when the time is up. Alternatively create a shutdown timer on your desktop.     5

A.Being addicted to it is quite normal.
B.Admit you are at risk of an addiction.
C.The truth, though, is that it’s quite common to be an addict.
D.When the computer is not looking at you, you are less likely to use it.
E.This can be programmed to shut down your computer after the set time.
F.If you have a problem on weekdays, phone your friends or ask for help in person.
G.This will prevent you from using the Internet so often or going on to another page.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了社交媒体上的负面新闻会引起消极的想法,有时很难处理这些消极的想法,可以在社交媒体平台上寻找“帮手”,文章讲述了这种做法的挑战及好处。

2 . We live in a world where we are usually exposed to (接触) news on social media that can be scary, upsetting, or confusing.     1     However, as Mr. Rogers, the beloved host of a children’s show, once said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helpful.’ ”

One of the places where we can look for “the helpers” is on social media platforms.     2     For example, Ryan Kaji is a 9-year-old boy who runs the channel Ryan’s World. He makes videos about science experiments and games that are fun and educational for kids. He also donates to charities and causes that he cares about.

3     One problem is finding reliable (可靠) and exact sources of information. Not all content on social media platforms is trustworthy. Some content creators may just want to make money from ads. Therefore, it is important to judge the reliability of the sources before we trust their content. Another challenge is keeping a healthy balance between online and offline activities. Spending too much time online can do harm to our physical health, such as causing headaches or sleep problems. Therefore, it is important to limit our screen time by doing other activities.     4

Looking for helpers on social media can be a valuable way to find hope and comfort in difficulty.    5     Then we will form our own opinions. We can also be helpers ourselves by sharing helpful content on social media that can make a difference in the world.

A.We’d better find some topics to talk about with the helper.
B.Exercising, reading, and learning art are all good choices.
C.Phones and computers have made information easier to gain.
D.They offer a lot of content that can educate or support young viewers.
E.It enables us to see things from different viewpoints and learn new things.
F.However, looking for helpers on social media also comes with some challenges.
G.Sometimes, it can be hard to deal with the negative thoughts that these events cause.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了间歇性饮食这一现象。

4 . Being healthy is important. Often, we’re crazy about articles in health magazines talking about the latest popular diets, or advertisements that offer cures (疗法) for fatness that are often too good to be true. One of the latest crazy phenomena (现象) is intermittent fasting (间歇性禁食).     1

There are different ways of intermittent fasting.     2     Another common way is choosing a diet that sees people only eating during a limited part of the day, for example, over eight hours.

3     A study suggests intermittent fasting may help control blood sugar and reduce the possibility of suffering related disease. Other studies have shown intermittent fasting may help slow the ageing process, support brain function, lose weight, etc.

Some people try intermittent fasting for weight management, and others use the method to deal with some conditions such as high cholesterol or arthritis.     4     Fasting might not suit those who are underweight or with a long-term medical condition. Fasting may cause some people to experience symptoms (症状) such as headaches or make them easily suffer from overeating after a reduced calorie intake (热量摄入) day.

As with many diets, it’s always wise to speak to your doctor or weight-loss professional before changing your eating habits. And, at the end of the day, it could just come down to what lifestyle choice suits you.     5     If not, your health may suffer.

A.But what is intermittent fasting?
B.However, this diet isn’t for everyone.
C.Intermittent fasting has two main origins.
D.Let’s look at some of the possible benefits.
E.The idea of this is to reduce calories over a period.
F.In a word, you should avoid turning to intermittent fasting blindly.
G.You can eat normally on five days of a week and reduce calorie intake on the other two.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。对于我们中的许多人来说,从博物馆里看到的艺术品中获得灵感并不容易。短文介绍了一些关于如何建立有意义的联系的建议。

6 . For many of us, it is not easy to feel inspired by the artworks that we see at museums. Here are some tips on how to create that meaningful connection.

Keep an open mind

Once you are in an art museum, try not to have any ideas about what you’re about to see.     1     . You can love it. You can hate it. Just tell yourself that it’s OK.

Draw personal connections to the art

When you see an artwork, just let your mind wander and follow your thought wherever it leads you.     2     . As a result, a deep connection will happen.

    3

You can increase the chances of finding an art piece you connect with by going to a museum that interests you. If you’re interested in climate change, for example, you may pick a museum that’s showing artworks inspired by Earth conservation.

Really “look at” the art

After you have found an artwork you like, take time to observe it closely. You can take a finger to the air and follow the outline of the figure or the movement of the brushstrokes.     4     .

Keep your museum visit short and focused

Art museums can be huge. So be realistic about how long you can spend at the museum.     5     . After that, it’s hard to stay focused and understand what you’ve seen.

A.Reflect and appreciate
B.You don’t need more than an hour or two
C.Pick a museum that is related to your interests
D.Instead, allow yourself to feel how the art makes you feel
E.The free associations will help create emotional reactions in you

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是如何学习思考。

7 . The art of learning how to think

Learning how to think is really the whole point of going to university because it is one of the few periods in your life when you get time to do it.

Like any skill, successful thinking takes practice. The more time you spend thinking and the more ideas you come up with, the more likely it is that some of them will be good ones.     1     Your thinking will never improve if it consists entirely of thinking how much of a failure you are.

2     Geniuses generally come up with their brilliant innovations by thinking about a subject in lots of different ways and establishing connections between apparently different ideas. On the other hand, there are times when you need to know what you are supposed to be thinking about and why, and to stay reasonably focused.

If you are having trouble thinking, it may be because you lack another skill that would make it easier. It could be that you don’t have a wide enough vocabulary to put your thoughts into words.     3     If you share a house with violinists and pianists, you may have trouble hearing yourself think.

One way to sharpen this skill is to think critically about what other people are thinking. Thinking is not always something that needs to be done alone.     4     So, if your housemates ever abandon their instruments, engage them in conversation, look for holes in their arguments, and explain your own.

If you get really good at thinking while at university, you may be able to think of a way to carry that on.     5

A.Proper thinking is about creating an argument.
B.It enables us to become more independent thinkers.
C.If they’re all rubbish, try not to keep thinking about it.
D.And thus it saves you actually doing anything once you leave.
E.You may also be in the wrong environment for productive thought.
F.Having a one-track mind won’t improve your power of thinking anyway.
G.In fact, communicating your thoughts can help to develop and clarify them.

8 . The Joys of College

Often, we college students complain endlessly about all of the things we hate about college. And sure, college is really stressful and there are some aspects I don’t like.     1

The first thing I truly enjoy about being a college student is that I get to take classes that actually interest me.     2     In college, learning doesn’t feel like a chore (苦差事) to me any more because I actually get to design my schedule to my interests.

The community at the university is also very important to me. We are all suffering here but we are all suffering together.     3     I know I can complain to any fellow college student about the stress my assignments are causing and they will always understand.

4     The campus parties, holiday markets, and concerts give us something to look forward to as we struggle our way through our classes. And a variety of club activities—like the Campus Times—make college life all the more exciting.

The university presents us with so many unique opportunities as well.   We are encouraged to study abroad, which allows students to experience student life in another country and dive into other cultures in the process.     5     Students maybe even land a job prior to graduation.

So although there are a lot of negatives of college—and I mean a lot—there are also a lot of positives. I know that when I graduate, I’m going to miss being a college student.

A.After all, college can be very demanding.
B.The fun activities and clubs are also a plus.
C.But for once, I’d like to focus on the positives.
D.Here, there are so many different fields to study.
E.Additionally, being a trainee is a great way to get experience.
F.The college experience can get bearable due to this community.
G.It isn’t like high school where you’re required to take the same classes.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了停止抱怨,放弃消极想法的一些建议。

9 . Everyone complains. Even if you argue that you are the happiest person in the world, you still complain sometimes. Sometimes you complain without even realizing it, but rarely is it ever helpful.     1     Here are some tips to stop complaining and give up the negative thoughts.

    2

When you find yourself thinking or saying a negative comment about something or someone, stop and force yourself to say something positive instead. Seek the help of a cheerful friend to change you when you complain and help you to see the positive in the situation.

Make a list of things you are grateful for.

You often complain about the things you don’t have without noticing those things you already have. Be grateful for what you have in your life because you are lucky simply for being yourselves.     3

Learn to adapt to the changes.

There are many things you can’t change.     4     Always find the positive side of each situation, regardless of however difficult the situation is. With parents’ and friends’ support, you can survive any life changes.

Allow yourself to vent (发泄) your feelings every once in a while.

Constantly ignoring negative thoughts could add up. If you are really going through a rough time, don’t be afraid to share your feelings with a close friend or family member or see a therapist.

Find what makes you happy.

5     Maybe it is time to make the hard decision to move on to another job or career. Uncover what your biggest complaints are about and see if you can change the situation to make you happy. Choose happiness, focus on the positive, and be kind always!

A.Sometimes this list can be easy, full of hobbies you enjoy.
B.The best and only thing you can do is to accept them.
C.Change the way you think.
D.Are you constantly complaining about your present job?
E.Set down things you are thankful for and you’ll see that you don’t have any reason to complain.
F.Make friends with positive people.
G.So how can you manage to force yourselves to end complaining?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些在日常生活中找到更多平静与安宁的方法。

10 . The daily life can be busy and at times difficult. It may sometimes feel like bringing just a little more inner peace and calmness into your life is a hopeless wish.     1     Small and smart changes can make a big difference over time. Here are some tips for finding more peace and calmness in everyday life.

Set limits (限制). If your life is overfilled, you may need to set some limits. So stop doing some of the least important things, which honestly don’t matter that much. Set a limit for how many times you will check your mailbox, Instagram,Twitter etc. per day.     2

Organise your world and your mind.     3     A tidy, clean and ordered space around you brings clarity and order to the mind. So don’t stop there. Simplify and organise your home and life to live in a more relaxing environment.

4     Reading minds is pretty much impossible. But still we often try it and create anxiety and uncertainty for ourselves. So ask and communicate instead. It may sometimes be a bit hard at first but it can save you and the people around you so much trouble in the long run.

Solve a problem that is weighing heavily on you. Solve your problem and release (释放) all the stress that it is creating in your life. You probably already know what to do, and you are just not doing it yet.     5     So get up from your chair and get started right now.

A.Ask instead of guessing.
B.Sometimes you have a bad day.
C.But it doesn’t have to be that way.
D.And say no if you really don’t have the time.
E.Leave your work and work phone where it belongs.
F.Just take three minutes to organize the room you’re in.
G.But the longer you wait, the worse the tension (紧张) inside becomes.
