文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了三种防止在追求目标过程中失去焦点的简单技巧:专注于单一目标、承诺采取小步骤行动以及关注进步而非结果。

1 . Most people fail to achieve their goals because somewhere along the line, they lose focus.     1     And eventually, they give up on their goals. Does this sound familiar to you? Don’t worry. Here are 3 simple techniques you can use to prevent yourself from losing focus on your goals.

2     All too often, many people make the mistake and believe that the more goals they have, the better. This is wrong. Once, researchers conducted an experiment about the choices of jams and the number of sales. They discovered that the more choices of jams they provided for shoppers, the fewer sales they got. The more options you have, the less likely you can focus better. Therefore, focus on just ONE.

The second technique you can use is this - commit to taking small steps. Success isn’t going to happen overnight. Success is the accumulation of many small steps.     3     It will only make you suffer. Instead, commit to doing a minimum number such as 30 push-ups every day, and then increase gradually.     4     it lowers the resistance, and you are more likely to take action.

The third method is to focus on progress, not results. This is one of the most important distinctions between someone successful and someone who is not. Successful people understand that progress is key, not results.     5     On the contrary, unsuccessful people focus only on getting the result. Whenever they don’t get the result they want, they feel bad, frustrated, and lose their motivation, which eventually makes them give up on their goals.

If you apply these methods, you too, can maintain your focus and reach your goals, slowly, but surely.

A.Dream big and set big goals to inspire you.
B.They get distracted and then they stop taking action.
C.Make sure you focus fully on just ONE goal at a time.
D.They just want to get the work done and push forward.
E.When you make an effort to develop your ability to focus,
F.When you focus on getting started and taking small steps,
G.You don’t have to commit to doing 100 push-ups every day.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述如何在拥挤的人群中保持安全。

3 . Before you head out to a fun event where there will be many people, you should be aware of the dangers of a crowd crush (拥挤的人群), whose possibility adds up during the festivals or on some celebrating occasions.

Though the risk of crowd crush is rare, it can be deadly when it happens. Crowd crush occurs when many people are packed together and begin to fall over one another. In the past, such instances have caused horrible injury and even death.     1

Before attending a crowded event, look up a map of the venue.     2     Once you arrive, choosing the right spot can be crucial. Avoid the middle or front; instead, pick the back or edges of a crowd. It s also important to trust your feelings. Stay aware to see if you feel packed in at any point. The more crowded the event becomes, the sooner you may need to move to a safe place.

3     The most important thing you can do is stay on your feet. To do this, spread your feet apart and bend your knees a little. Also make sure to move with the flow of the crowd. Trying to move against a crowd of people will only end in disaster.

Helping others is another great way to keep everyone safe. Once one person falls down, more people tend to fall over them.     4

A common cause of death in a crowd crush isn’t being crushed but rather losing air. It’s best to hold out your arms in front of your chest.     5     It also protects your chest and lungs from being crushed on the ground should you fall.

There is usually fun where the crowds are, so enjoy yourself. But meanwhile, it is also important to remember to stay alert and take care of your family members when you sense the smell of danger.

A.If you do end up in a crush, here’s how you can stay safe.
B.This allows space between you and the person in front of you.
C.So if your neighbor in the crowd falls to the ground, help them up.
D.Seeking for a safer place takes some time and is sometimes challenging.
E.To avoid such an outcome, it’s best to escape the crush before it happens.
F.The shortage of air means less oxygen, which will lead to serious consequences.
G.This will give you an idea of the surroundings—pay special attention to any exits.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了几个关于如何找到合适的旅游目的地的建议。

4 . You’ve made the decision that you want to travel more this year. You’ve realized that experiences are more important than possessions (财产) and you’ve put together a plan to start saving for your next big trip.     1     Here are my top tips to help you choose your travel destinations.

Be open-minded.

Haven’t heard of a place?     2     Have no idea where a place is? But you’ve found cheap flights to that place…? Search it using the search engine, check whether it’s safe and if so, book that flight! Sometimes you’ll have the best adventures in places you can’t pronounce, Ljubljana, for example.

    3

You want to travel to a certain destination but flights are really expensive? Don’t let this put you off, unlock your creativity and find a solution. Using the example of Ljubljana again, it’s really expensive to fly direct but flights to Venice are cheap and then there’s a 2-hour shuttle (往返) bus from Venice Ljubljana. Problem solved.

Explore travel websites and blogs.

4     Visit travel websites and blogs that specialize in the destinations on your route. These websites often feature articles and lists of top attractions, along with detailed descriptions, impressive photos, and helpful tips from experienced travelers. Take the time to look through these websites and complete a list of the attractions that catch your interest.

Seek suggestions from locals.

Locals are often the best sources of information when it comes to discovering hidden destinations. Engage (接触) with locals through conversations, or social media groups related to your destination.     5

A.Be creative.
B.Can’t even pronounce a place?
C.Avoid the common misunderstandings.
D.Can’t find a way to write your journal?
E.But how are you going to decide where to actually go?
F.The Internet is a place full of valuable information when it comes to travel.
G.Ask for their recommendations that might not be widely known but are worth exploring.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了普通学生如何通过合理规划时间、选择合适学习环境、高效利用课堂时间、规律复习及正确对待考试等方法成为更优秀的学生。

5 .     1     You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying.     2     A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for an area suitable for study. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class.     3     Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, and read that material.     4     If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. This helps you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

5     You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A.Take advantage of class time to listen to what the teacher says.
B.Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.
C.There are other methods that might help you with your studying.
D.Maybe you are an average student.
E.No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
F.Make full use of class time to take notes of everything the teacher says in class.
G.This will help you understand the next class.

文章大意:本文是说明文,主要讨论了贝类海产的壳被回收再利用到水体中的项目,以及这些项目对环境和经济的益处。

6 . When we eat some popular kinds of shellfish (贝类海产), we leave behind large amounts of shells.     1     Several projects now aim to put them back into waterways.

In the U.S., shells cast aside in restaurants and other businesses are being collected, cleaned and thrown back into waterways.     2     One of the latest projects on oysters (牡蛎) takes place in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The shells were put into the state’s Mullica River and helped form new or expanded oyster groups. Free-floating baby oysters connect to the shells and grow on them.     3     It has also helped eateries (小餐馆) save money on dealing with their shells, according to Scott Stueber, a fisheries biologist with the Department of Environmental Protection.

4     In nature, oysters are cleaners. One adult oyster can remove pollutants from about 190 liters of water a day. So oysters can improve water quality. Oyster groups also are being planted along some coastlines to strengthen shores. Besides, oyster reefs can protect shorelines. Such reefs can also be homes for sea creatures and provide food for humans.

Communities, environmental groups and governments around the world have had oyster reefs recycled and replanted in recent years. It’s happening in many states of the United States.     5     Since 2009, the Harte Research Institute at Texas A&M University has collected about 800,000 kilograms of shells and rebuilt about 100,000 square meters of oyster reefs.

A.And most of them end up in waterways.
B.For example, each year in Maryland, about 70 cubic meters of recycled shells are turned into oyster groups.
C.The shells form a new living place for sea creatures like oysters.
D.The Mullica River is actually home to some of the oysters.
E.However, these shells are no longer thrown into waste containers.
F.The project has kept about 60,000 kilograms of shells out of landfills (填埋).
G.Despite the economic benefits, the main goal is to improve the environment.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍收养兔子的五个理由。

7 . The saying goes that a dog is man’s best friend, but this companionship isn’t unique to dogs. Even though rabbits are smaller and quieter than dogs, they are also intelligent, outgoing, active, and social and they make great pets. Here are five reasons for adopting (养) a rabbit.

Rabbits are budget-friendly.

Rabbit care is much less expensive than the budget (预算) required for taking care of a dog or cat.     1     And they also require less pet doctor checkups than larger animals.

It’s easy to fit a rabbit into the schedule.

Rabbits are awake in the early morning and early evening, and spend most daytime and nighttime sleeping.     2     The rabbit is ready for playtime in the morning before work and after getting home from work, and the owner doesn’t need to feel guilty (内疚的) about leaving the rabbit home during the daytime, because it spends those hours sleeping.     3     There’s no need to take it for daily walks, so it’s a great choice for a busy pet-lover.

Rabbits are clean, quiet, and contained.

Rabbits are clean animals that generally don’t make large messages. Rabbits don’t require as large living spaces as a dog or cat does, so they are apartment-friendly.     4     So they won’t bother the owner or the neighbors.

Rabbits are intelligent and lovely.

5     They are also friendly. Rabbits quickly come to recognize their owners. They will follow them around the house and show them all sorts of love. They love to be petted and are eager for attention although they don’t like being picked up.

A.Rabbits don’t make loud noises.
B.And a rabbit requires less care time.
C.They can always be a good part of the community.
D.It costs about $50 monthly to feed and care for a rabbit.
E.This works well for someone with a typical day job schedule.
F.Rabbits, like dogs, are smart enough to be trained to do all sorts of tricks.
G.People should make sure they are ready for the responsibility before adopting.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了早餐的作用。

8 . Have you ever heard someone say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, or give you advice about why it’s vital to start the day with a healthy breakfast?     1     Is it really that important? In a sense, it really matters.

Energy restoration

The word “breakfast” comes from “breaking the fast” — the idea of ending the period in which we didn’t eat during the night. The regeneration process that takes place while we sleep consumes some of our natural food reserves to heal our bodies.     2     So, in that way, a healthy breakfast makes sense.

Weight management

There are also many often-quoted studies which seem to link a state of obesity with skipping breakfast.     3     In a US study, 50,000 people were monitored over seven years, and those who ate a healthy breakfast were found to have a lower BMI, which seems to suggest that breakfast may indeed help people maintain a healthy weight.

Better brain function

4     Breakfast is also associated with improved brain function, including concentration and language. A review of 54 studies found that eating breakfast can improve memory, though the effects on other brain functions were inconclusive. However, one of the researchers says there is reasonable evidence that breakfast does improve concentration.

What’s most important is what we eat for breakfast. High-protein breakfasts have been found particularly effective in reducing food cravings and consumption later in the day. However, studies found that there is no agreement on what type of breakfast is healthier.     5

A.Breakfast helps us refill the exhausted stores.
B.Weight-loss is likely to cause them health problems.
C.Breakfast has been found to affect more than just weight.
D.Breakfast types don’t matter as much as simply eating something.
E.Thus, it is suggested that a healthy breakfast can regulate and lose weight.
F.Many people are recommended to manage their weight by skipping meals.
G.It seems that this feast, for many of us, is necessary for our day to start well.

9 . Certain brands and products can be easily recognized at a glance by people worldwide.     1     Just mentioning the words golden arches (拱门) brings to mind burgers and fries from McDonald’s. With such universal popularity, many people are confused as to why these large and famous companies do so much advertising and have such large advertising budgets.     2

Most business owners who are just starting to understand how vital advertising is to their growth. Putting in the time and money to market your company can help it grow over time.     3     Continuing to advertise after achieving success helps businesses maintain a positive image with the public. It can also help attract new customers as demographics (客户群体) change as time passes. Furthermore, advertising helps to inform your customers of updates to old products and introduce new ones. However, the ultimate goal of advertising for both big and small companies is to earn more income and maximize profits.

4     Is it better to stick to traditional forms of media, like newspapers and television, or embrace (接纳) new forms of online advertising on social media sites? While many new smaller companies tend to focus their limited budgets on social media and internet marketing, it is usually better for larger, well-established companies to do both. For example, over 95% of homes receive television signals, while only around 75% of the population has access to the internet.     5     Also, older, wealthier people are more likely to notice television advertising than online advertising. While the focus of advertising might change over time, companies must certainly continue to use it to grow.

A.Is advertising necessary?
B.After all, shouldn’t their global success speak for itself?
C.This same principle holds true for older successful brands.
D.Therefore, television advertising gives companies access to more people.
E.Another major question companies must find the answer to is how to advertise.
F.The money invested in these advertisements could be used for more worthwhile businesses.
G.Almost everyone is familiar with the red labeling of Coca-Cola or the symbolic flower logo of Huawei.
