文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文对互联网、人类居住环境、能源应用等领域的未来作出了预测。

3 . In the future, the Internet will be different from what it is now. There will be many more websites. It is predicted that in the year 2100, there will be hundreds of billions of websites. This means that the use of search engines will become much more important. And there will also be many more sites in different languages. This means that on every proper website, there will be links with the language you want.

Another prediction on the Internet is that data transmission (传输) speed will increase globally. According to Akamai Technologies, the average global data transmission speed in late 2019 was 26.7 megabits per second. Compare that to the record for data transmission speed set by Bell Labs: 100 billion megabits per second. At that speed, you could transmit 400 DVDs worth of data every second. That’s an enormous gap between what’s currently possible and what’s commercially available. But as time passes, the costs of producing super-high-speed networks will decrease.

In the future, people will live under the sea and the housing shortage will be solved. There will be lots of glass domes (穹状建筑物)under the sea, which allow people to look all around into the sea. Air will be provided via air pipes which lead to the open air. You can travel from one dome to another via a kind of submarine which will also be made of glass. The domes will be so beautiful and the view under the sea will be so impressive that many people will prefer to live under water, and less people will prefer to live on land. This will have a positive effect on the environment on land.

In the future we won’t use oil or gas as energy any more. We will make use of sunlight, water and wind. Cars will run on water. Just fill your tank with water, and you can drive further than you could drive with the same amount of gasoline. Also, the exhaust won’t be damaging to the environment, because it’ll just be water vapour. So the water cycle won’t change, we’ll keep the same amount of water on the earth, and we won’t run out of water. Also, all energy will be supplied by natural sources: sunlight, wind and water.

1. What can we know about the Internet in the future from the first two paragraphs?
A.It will be more important to use search engines.
B.Most of the websites will be designed in English.
C.People not knowing a foreign language will find it hard to surf the Internet.
D.There will be great gaps between developed countries and developing countries in Internet usage.
2. Why are super-high-speed networks not available to the public at present?
A.Because the costs are too high.B.Because there are technical difficulties.
C.Because Bell Labs doesn’t want to sell its technique.D.Because governments haven’t recognised their value.
3. The underlined word “exhaust” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to “     .
A.oil productB.waste airC.solar energyD.wind energy
4. What can we infer from the text?
A.The Internet is the most advanced invention in history.
B.Water will run out sooner than we have expected.
C.Houses under the sea will be made from metal.
D.Sunlight, wind and water will benefit people more in the future.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章作者阐述了自己成为一名教师的梦想和追求。

6 . Different people have different ambitions in life such as doctors. For as long as I can remember I always liked teaching people something. From my childhood, I taught whatever I learned in school. It started with helping some trying to tie their shoelaces or making my younger siblings remember alphabets through a sing-song rhythm. This profession will enable me to make my humble contribution to the building of my nation by instilling the spirit of nationalism and patriotism in my students. The sense of accomplishment I used to feel when the other person finally learned whatever it was that I had been teaching them was indescribable.

The main reason I always wanted to teach was that firstly I thought teaching comes naturally to me and secondly, I always had the utmost respect for my teacher, who knew my strengths and weakness more than I did. According to Plato, education is the turning of the inner eye towards the light. By adopting the profession of teaching, I can hope to perform this stupendous task.

I aspire to make a difference in others’ lives through education. I’m studying to be an elementary school teacher because I believe that children can achieve so much more if they learn early of their potential. My parents taught me as a child that schooling was vital to success in life. Truly, that lesson has been the most important in my path to college. I don’t think I would have made it this far had I not taken my education seriously.

What started from teaching my siblings in their homework ended in me volunteering to teach underprivileged children and making me realize that in this world there could be never enough educators and there are people in this world who are always in need of learning. I want to teach others about the importance of education so they too can prosper. Everything I’m learning at university is important for my future career and, if I don’t study it, I'm failing my future students. In view of the foregoing reasons, I am convinced that my preference to become a teacher is a step in the right direction. I will, therefore, spare no effort to achieve this ambition of my life.

1. The author mentioned the childhood experience to_________.
A.share the sense of accomplishmentB.advocate nationalism and patriotism
C.explain the inborn passion for teachingD.introduce several ways to help others
2. What does the word “stupendous” underlined in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Impossible.B.Impressive.C.Indescribable.D.Imaginary.
3. What inspires the author to become an elementary school teacher?
A.The significance of education.B.The power of students’ potential.
C.The life of the university.D.The successful career of parents.
4. What has the author learned from the voluntary work?
A.Being a teacher is effortless.
B.Poor children fail to be educators.
C.Studying in university is not enough.
D.Education should be accessible to all.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了第一次独自旅行冒险时要记住的事情。

7 . Things To Remember On Your First Solo Travel Adventure

If you’ve ever thought about just taking a trip yourself instead of waiting for someone to join you, you’re not alone.     1     However, do you count yourself among the many who have tried it? If you’re planning your own solo trip, here are four important things to keep in mind.

2     Since you’re traveling solo, how you choose to explore it is entirely up to you. This is your chance to do whatever you want whenever you want because this time, you’re running the show.

Don’t be afraid to talk to random people. Though there is someone who poses a threat, it’s important to remember that not everyone is out to get you.     3    That’s because you’re a novelty, a person from another country who is visiting theirs. Therefore, instead of putting on your headphones or instantly seeing them as weirdos, use this spontaneous chat as a chance to meet the locals or get recommendations for things to do during your trip.

It’s okay to have bad days.     4     It happens and it’s completely okay to take some time to process whatever it is you’re feeling. Take yourself to a movie or spend the day dong something relaxing like writing in your journal or reading on the beach.

It’s okay to start small.     5     Start by doing a staycation in another part of town, spending a few days in a new locale a bus or train ride away. Just do whatever you’re comfortable with and see how it all feels for you.

A.You are the boss of your own adventure.
B.You need to make an unusual travel choice.
C.It’s no secret that solo travel is on the rise.
D.Sometimes things can go incredibly wrong.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要讲述了通过 3D打印技术制作假眼比传统手工制作更节省成本而且自然逼真,对于有需要的人来说是更好的选择。

9 . Extremely authentic-looking prosthetic (假体的) eyes can now be 3D-printed in a fraction of the time it would normally take to produce the eyes by hand, scientists demonstrate in a new study.

The new technology can create a prosthetic eye in just 90 minutes, compared with the eight hours it would normally take a skilled technician, or ocularist, to produce one by hand. The 3D-printed eyes require five times less labor to make than traditional methods, the scientists behind the technology wrote in a new paper published in the journal Nature Communications.

The 3D-printed eyes also look more natural than traditional prostheses; this could help improve a patient’s self-confidence in using the devices. “Patients are very conscious about wearing a prosthesis, and they don't want others to notice,” Johann Reinhard, lead study author and a researcher at the Fraunhofer

Institute for Computer Graphics Research in Germany, told us. “With these more realistic eves, it might help them to participate more in society,” he said.

The new printing approach involves taking a specialized image of a patient’s empty eye socket and of their healthy eye. These images are then processed and used to draft blueprints that can be sent to be 3D-printed in the lab. These 3D-printed eyes closely replicate the color, size and structure of the patient's healthy eye and are particularly good at capturing the colored part of the eye, known as the iris, and the white part of the eye, called the sclera. Once finished, the eyes take 15 to 30 minutes to be installed by an ocularist, Reinhard said.

“About 80% of adults in need of prosthetic eyes could theoretically have one made this way, either due to a birth defect that causes an eye to be small or missing or because they’ve lost an eye,” the team said. “However, this wouldn’t be possible for all patients, such as those who have a very complex eye socket, as the software wouldn’t be able to find a matching shape for the prosthetic eye,” Reinhard said.

“More data are needed to see if this technique could also be used to make prosthetic eyes for children, which would require more regulation,” Reinhard said.

1. Which of the following words can be best used to describe the 3D-printed eyes?
A.Eco-friendly.B.Time-consuming.C.Fit-of-all.D.Realistic-looking.
2. How does the author develop his idea mainly in Paragraph 2?
A.By justifying an idea.B.By giving examples.
C.By providing evidence.D.By making a comparison.
3. Which statement is true about a 3D-printed eye?
A.The patients prefer to show off their prosthetic eyes.
B.Every adult in need of a prosthetic eye can’t possibly have one.
C.It normally takes a skilled technician, or ocularist, to produce one.
D.The installment of one is 5 times faster than a traditional prosthetic eye.
4. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.3D-printed Eyes——a Better Alternative
B.3D Printing—a Promising Technology
C.3D-printed Eyes—a Source of Confidence
D.Prosthetic Eyes—the Hope for all Blind People

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了研究人员开发了一种可以自我清洁的表面,解释了其工作原理以及测试情况和未来的应用。

10 . The age-old chore of dusting could soon be a thing of the past. Scientists are developing “self-cleaning” surfaces that make dust particles unable to stick to them. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin say the particles instead stick to each other and simply roll off the surfaces with nothing more than the assistance of gravity.

The scientists altered the geometry (几何构造) of flat surfaces at a level invisible to human eyes. The team made a tightly-packed nanoscale (纳米级) network of pyramid-shaped structures on the surfaces which made it difficult for dust particles to stick to the material. Instead, the particles stick to each other before rolling off the material due to gravity.

The study, funded by a grant (拨款) from NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research program, tested the material by piling lunar dust on their engineered surfaces before turning them on their sides. The team found that just two percent of the surface remained dusty, compared with more than 35 percent of an unaltered smooth surface. The new surface could provide a passive solution to removing dust, as opposed to more active methods like using wipers and fluid to clear dust from a car windscreen.

“What we’ve demonstrated here is a surface that can clean itself,” says lead study author Chih-Hao Chang. “Particulates aren’t able to stick to the surface, so they come off using just the force of gravity.”

Study authors hope the material provides a solution to space dust, which can be extremely harmful in such a high-risk environment and is almost impossible to clean out. Space dust has previously caused great damage to NASA’s human spaceflight Apollo missions and has even caused rovers on Mars to malfunction and fail. “There’s not much you can do about lunar dust in space—it sticks to everything and there’s no real way to wipe it off,” says Samuel Lee, a lead author of the study. “Dust on solar panels of Mars rovers can cause them to fail.”

However, the researchers also believe the discovery could prove useful on Earth, preventing solar panels from collecting dust and losing efficiency. These surfaces may even protect our screens and windows from irritating dust.

1. How did the scientists alter the flat surfaces?
A.By putting thin paint on them.B.By creating a special network on them.
C.By making particles stick to each other.D.By making them invisible to human eyes.
2. What can we learn about the surfaces after the test?
A.Over 35% of the surfaces were dusty.
B.Just two percent of the surfaces remained dusty.
C.The surfaces still needed to be cleaned with wipers and fluid.
D.The surfaces attracted more dust particles than common ones.
3. Why does the author mention NASA’s human spaceflight Apollo missions and rovers on Mars?
A.To show the material can be very helpful.B.To prove irritating dust exists everywhere.
C.To show the importance of space exploration.D.To explain why NASA supported the research.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Dust threatened missions in space.B.Scientists developed self-cleaning surfaces.
C.Self-cleaning surfaces proved useful on Earth.D.Scientists developed a material for rovers on Mars.
