文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章指出苹果公司似乎在人工智能竞争中措手不及。为了成功进入新市场,苹果正在寻求将Siri的策略与人工智能相结合的方法。

2 . As you may have noticed, machine learning and artificial intelligence are two of the hottest areas in technology today. One company that seems to have been caught flat-footed in the artificial intelligence race is Apple. To successfully participate in new markets, Apple is seeking ways to combine its strategy in Siri and artificial intelligence.

Apple’s voice assistant Siri significantly falls behind competing smart speakers from Amazon and Google. Take HomePod, Apple’s smart-speaker product for example, though reviews praised the device for having excellent sound quality, Siri’s poor accuracy could limit its usefulness. Besides, the high price of the device also made it a harder sell than it would have been. Apple charges for the HomePod $350 while the competing Echo Plus, for example, costs $150.

If Apple wants to successfully participate in new markets, and keep its core iPhone and iPad products competitive well into the future, it needs to go from zero to hero in artificial intelligence. The company recently hired John Giannandrea, who previously led Google’s artificial intelligence efforts. And the company gave him more power, which seemed to suggest that Apple is really trying to rework its entire strategy in this field. Under this new specialist in artificial intelligence, some positive changes will take place in Apple’s artificial intelligence development.

However, let’s be realistic. A management change isn’t going to affect Apple’s products and technologies that we have seen for some time. Developing good software is a long process, especially considering the possibility that Apple will effectively throw out the current generation of Siri and start from beginning.

Nevertheless, one reason that I’m hopeful is that Apple seems to understand that it has a problem here and is making efforts to change the situation. If Apple is successful in reshaping its artificial intelligence efforts and continues to fund them appropriately, then there’s a reasonable chance that within a few years, it won’t be a laggard(落后者) in this field but a leader.

1. Why is Apple’s HomePod mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To advertise Apple’s new product.
B.To speak highly of its sound quality.
C.To compare different smart-speakers.
D.To show the disadvantages of Apple’s AI products.
2. Apple is trying to rework its entire strategy in AI by ______.
A.reshaping its leadership
B.setting up a special fund
C.inventing new smart products
D.stopping using Siri in HomePod
3. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A.Apple will be greatly reconstructed.
B.Apple will update its core products.
C.Apple’s situation won’t get better overnight.
D.Apple’s products won’t be competitive.
4. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The future of Apple’s core products
B.The decline of Apple’s voice assistant Siri
C.Machine learning and artificial intelligence
D.The efforts Apple made to have a place in AI field

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了天气预报的复杂过程以及影响其准确性的因素。

4 . You plan and hope, keeping a close eye on the forecast. Even so, the vacation you expect gets ruined by the bad weather. I’m pretty sure that everyone has their story of the plans messed up by weather forecasts.     1    Why is it that even with all the technological wonders in the world, it’s still a challenge to predict the weather?

2    A lot of data from different sources, like satellites, are accumulated and analyzed. Powerful computers use this data to make predictions. The idea of using numerical analysis to predict the weather originated in the 1920s with Lewis Fry Richardson’s writings. Later, with the help of supercomputers, this became a more practical approach.

Weather forecasts often go wrong, but not quite as often as you might think. We tend to focus mostly on what goes wrong, so it feels like the forecasts are always inaccurate. A five-day forecast is actually pretty accurate —     3    For a seven-day forecast, the numbers go down to about 80%. But add more days and the uncertainty necessarily builds. These numbers are also much better than what they used to be.     4

To determine the state of the atmosphere at any point, and therefore make a forecast, several different changes must be taken into account.     5    The changes are used as initial conditions that can be fed into mathematical models. The models are designed based on patterns in historical data and the typical behavior of weather. Advancements in data collection and the processing power of computers also help explain why forecasts today have improved so dramatically.

A.You can trust the forecast at your own risk.
B.Why are our weather forecasts so inaccurate?
C.The forecasts are right about 90% of the time.
D.Weather forecasting is a complicated process.
E.These deal with wind, temperature, pressure, and others.
F.A five-day forecast today is as accurate as a one-day forecast in 1980.
G.There are many changes involved in describing the state of the atmosphere.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了一种职场现象——闷爆,介绍了表现、对员工的影响以及解决方法。

5 . “Boreout (闷爆) is different from burnout (精疲力竭) in the sense that bored-out employees rarely break down with exhaustion. Bored-out people may be present physically but not in spirit, and people can keep doing this for a good while,” says Harju, who has studied boreout for years.

Workers who realize they’re experiencing boreout may also be unwilling to flag it up as an issue to line managers or human resources. “While the behaviors that feed into burnout — overwork, drive — are appreciated and rewarded by employers, boreout reflects a lack of interest, a lack of motivation,” says Harju. “These are things that are avoided in organizations.”

There are some quick fixes, like taking on work tasks that are more interesting to you. But a 2016 study Harju and her colleagues worked on showed that people who had boreout were less likely to engage in constructive activities like trying to find new, interesting challenges at work.

What happens more often, she says, is that people will just show up at their desks and spend time shopping online, chatting with colleagues or planning other activities. She says that these people aren’t lazy, but are using these behaviours as “coping mechanisms”.

Fahri Ozsungur, an associate professor of economics at Mersin University, Turkey, who was behind the 2021 study on the health effects of boreout, points out that combating the phenomenon isn’t just down to the individual. “Giving meaning to the job is not just up to the employees,” he says. “Instead, it’s up to management to create an office culture that makes people feel valuable.”

If you think boreout is seriously affecting your health either physically or mentally, it may be valuable to ask yourself how you might be able to reselect your career path toward something healthier for you. Seek the advice from advisers, career consultants, friends and family.

“If only people take its suggestion, boreout can make a change into something else: a different career entirely, or a different role in the organization,” Harju says.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic of the text.B.To describe people with burnout.
C.To explain what burnout is.D.To tell us who Harju is.
2. Why do people prefer not to talk about their boreout?
A.They lack relevant knowledge.B.They are warned not to talk about it.
C.They may not want it to be known to employers.D.They fear to be laughed at by their colleagues.
3. What does the underlined word “combating” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Encouraging.B.Blaming.C.Trusting.D.Fighting.
4. Which of the following may Harju agree with?
A.Forcing employers to increase salaries.B.Sticking to the job until you adapt to it.
C.Trying spending more time with your family.D.Considering changing a new job interesting you.

文章大意:文章介绍了一种新科技,这种新科技能够将通常情况下人们所看不到的红外光转化为人们能看到的物象。在这种新科技的帮助下,人们可以在黑暗中视物良好。

8 . Imagine being able to see perfectly in the dark. This dream has become a reality thanks to a newly developed technology. This technology consists of a thin film that will be placed on the lenses (镜片) of regular glasses, The film is inexpensive to make, easy to produce, and is lightweight. It is actually 100 times thinner than a hair. Yet, despite its tiny size, its performance is impressive; this special film allows you to see in the dark.

This technology is able to transform infrared light (红外光), normally invisible to the human eye, and turn this into images people can see. Compared to animals, humans have very impoverished night vision. Over the years, night vision devices (设备) have been developed to help the medical, industrial, and scientific worlds. Scientists are able to study night-time animals by using infrared cameras, while companies use infrared imaging for food quality control.

Traditional infrared devices work by discovering the beat of an object. They use a cooler in low temperature and can be easily influenced by the heat noise. Such shortcoming led the team into exploring an improved device. Their new device is able to function at room temperature.

As the new technology is unlike the traditional devices, it has many future uses. Once this new night vision is available to all, it could save lives. Drivers will be able to see better at night, especially when driving on unlit roads. Police can use them when searching at night, and hikers who lose their way can feel more confident walking in the dark.

The inventors are excited to make the practical application. “While this is the first experiment, we are actively working to further advance the technology. Of course, the many uses are exciting and seeing in the dark opens up a new world for all,” said Mohsen Rahmani, lead developer of the technology.

1. What do we know about the film according to the first paragraph?
A.It costs a lot to make.B.It is difficult to produce.
C.It helps us see in the dark.D.It looks like regular glasses.
2. What does the underlined word “impoverished” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.ClearB.Poor.C.Amazing.D.Effective.
3. What can be inferred about the technology in Mohsen’s words?
A.It needs to be further developed
B.It has been available to common people.
C.It is not exciting enough to scientists.
D.It has become a hit in the experiment.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Exciting Technology Makes the Invisible Visible
B.Several Ways Make People See Things More Clearly
C.The Technology Is Developing Very Quickly
D.Infrared Devices Are Very Useful In the Dark

文章大意:本篇是一篇说明文。介绍了emoji表情的历史以及发展。

9 . New emojis (表情符号) appear every year. The updates come from a California-based nonprofit called Unicode Consortium. Each year, the emoji committee releases new emojis that will update the existing keyboard.

Jennifer Duniel, chair of the committee, says that it’s not the organization coming up with these new characters. It’s the public.

The first emoji keyboard was created in Japan in the 1990s by mobile phone company designer Shigetaka Kurita. Kurita created emojis because the company offered email communications that were limited to 250 characters and an emoji is only one character each but can be used to say more. Emoji have become popular around the world— 92 percent of the online population uses them.

“They aren’t tied to any language. They aren’t tied to any region of the world.” she says.

Anyone is allowed to submit (提交) new emojis, and if they make a strong enough case, Unicode will accept them. “We do get suggestions in lots of different languages from around the world,” says Daniel.

An emoji idea has to meet certain criteria (标准). These criteria include its clear differences, whether it can be used with existing emojis and whether it can have multiple meanings. The popular face with “tears of joy” emoji, for example, is easy to identify, which makes it distinct. You can pair it with many other emojis to convey how you are feeling. Additionally, this emoji has adopted many meanings.

Kids today are very familiar with emojis and how to use them. And the keyboard has got more than 3,600 emoji characters. “They became more and more comfortable and confident using emojis, which means they’re more willing to take risks,” Daniel says of younger generations who grow up with the keyboard.

1. Which best describes emojis?
A.They vary from place to place.
B.They are more expressive than words.
C.They make daily talk more difficult.
D.They are limited in computers.
2. What can be learnt about Unicode Consortium?
A.It gives emojis new meanings.
B.It invents new enojis every year.
C.It created the first emoji keyboard.
D.It judges the submission of new emojis.
3. Why is the popular face with “tears of joy” emoji mentioned?
A.To show its popularity among young people.
B.To make the emoji accepted by more people.
C.To make the criteria understood more easily.
D.To prove its difference from others.
4. What’s the younger generation’s attitude towards using emojis?
A.Supportive.B.Indifferent.C.CautiousD.Critical

10 . Activities to Help Children Develop Listening Skills

It is important for parents to help children from a young age practice listening skills.     1     There are somethings that you can do to help children develop listening skills at home.

Put directions into words. After you have finished speaking, you should invite children to give some oral directions. When children give you the directions correctly, you can be sure that they have heard the directions correctly.     2

Play listening skill games with children. Ask children to close their eyes or put their heads down on a desk.     3     Head Start, a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services, suggests that you ask questions about specific sounds, such as “Do you hear birds singing?” and “Can you hear water dripping in the sink?” Ask children to describe the sounds that they hear.

4     Reading to children provides many benefits. For one thing, they will see that you like reading. For another thing, they learn that reading can be an exciting form of entertainment because books arouse their imagination. So they will express a preference for reading.

Encourage children to think more. If you ask children to listen to and participate in a story, they will also be able to practice their listening skills. Ask what is going on in the story as you read.     5     When your each the end, ask how they feel about the story and what they like and dislike about it. Don’t stop with books, either. Discussing the story with children contributes to the formation of children’s listening skills.

A.Read to children.
B.Ask what sounds they hear.
C.Develop children’s imagination.
D.Good listening skills will help children all their life.
E.Good listeners can function well in diverse environments.
F.Ask children to repeat the directions in their own words.
G.At the same time, encourage children to predict the ending.
