Your teeth may be part of your smile,     1    they have a more important job — they are the first step in the process of digestion. You have three     2    (kind) of teeth. In the very front of your mouth are eight flat, thin teeth called incisors. They are used for cutting and biting food. Next to these are pointed teeth called canines,     3     also help you tear food. The remaining teeth are molars. These teeth have flat tops for crushing and grinding the food.

In the UK and the US, senior high school students take part in v     1     (各种各样的) after-school activities, such as club activities and v     2     (志愿者) work. These activities not only help them gain more skills, but also teach them to care about others. After-school activities also play a part when students apply to college. Once upon a time, there lived a young boy named Hans Christian Andersen. He was very poor and had a long, ugly nose. All the other children t    1     him. Nearly 200 years ago, Hans was born in Odense, Denmark. His father was poor but he loved literature and the theater. He often took Hans to the theater with him.

When Hans was only 11 years old, his father died. Hans had to q    4     school and work in a tailor’s shop to support his family.

Hans was a very lonely child. He did not play with the other children. When he wasn’t working, he stayed at home, reading books and writing his own stories and plays.

When he was 14 years old, Hans moved to Copenhagen to try to begin a c    5     as a singer or actor. The next three years p    6     to be very painful and unbearable. He nearly starved to death trying to make a living.

At age 17, he met Jonas Collin, director of the Royal Theater. Collin read one of Hans’ plays and recognized his t    7     in spite of Hans’ poor spelling. He helped Hans by o    8     a scholarship from the king to continue the boy’s schooling.

When he was 23 years old, Hans began his university studies. In 1835, he began writing his famous fairy tales. A    9     from the “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, there were still a lot more. His stories are often surprisingly clever and contain deep moral teachings, therefore making him a s    10    storyteller all over the world.

American High School Life

On August 26, 2016, I was a     1     to begin my freshman year in an American high school. G     2     up in Beijing, I needed to deal with and overcome several difficulties. Fortunately, there are detailed instructions for students to follow step by step, from enrollment (登记注册) to the academic program.

Each semester, the school holds an orientation (培训) for transfer students. We thought that would be the p     3     time for us to learn more about the school. The a     4     we take part in included getting to know your campus, finding your classrooms and learning how to read the bulletin board. The biggest difference is that the students change classrooms for each subject. From Monday to Friday, the schedule also changes. Every student has different classes from the o     5     depending on their electives. Do you think that’s c     6    ? I had thought it might be difficult, but actually I had no problem after the first week. Each day, students a     7       seven classes. They have five minutes to get from one class to another. Because the hallways are so packed, they often push one another o     8     of their way to make it in time.

At first I k     9     avoiding attention, but I realized that I’d been anxious for no reason. High school was anything b     10     a horrible place. Now I am finding my way despite the language barrier and looking forward to a great school year.
