Rong Hong, also     1     (know) as Yung Wing, was a pioneering figure in China’s modern history. He was born in 1828 in Guangdong Province of China. Rong is best known as the first Chinese person to graduate from     2     American university.

In 1854, Rong graduated from Yale University,     3     (mark) a significant milestone in the history of Chinese overseas education. His time in America     4     (shape) his perspective on education and     5     (modern), leading him to advocate Western-style education in China.

Upon returning to China, Rong worked to bridge the cultural and educational gap between China and the West. His most     6     (exception) achievement was the Chinese Educational Mission, a program     7     sent Chinese students to study in America in the late 19th century.

Rong believed that introducing Western science and technology would help China modernize and strengthen. While his ideas     8     (meet) with resistance in his time, his efforts laid the groundwork     9     future generations of Chinese students studying abroad.

Rong Hong was a pioneer for Chinese education and international exchange. His vision for a modernized China and his efforts     10     (promote) Western education have left a lasting impact on the country’s development.

For generations, Babusha,     1     is on the southern edge of the Tengger Desert, was troubled by sandstorms that frequently buried farmland, often leaving nothing to harvest.

Today, the desert’s southward spread has been stopped thanks to a green belt ten kilometers in     2     (long) and eight kilometers in width,     3     (plant) by Guo Wangang and his colleagues.

Guo’s father was one of the six men who first began planting trees in Babusha     4     (prevent) their land from being buried in 1981. When he     5     (force) to stop in 1983 due to poor health, Guo quit his job in the city and followed in his father’s rootsteps because he didn’t want to see the trees die. A deadly sandstorm in 1993 which claimed 23 students’     6     (life) firmed his resolve, turning Guo into     7     stubborn soldier, unwilling to give up the fight. “I asked     8     (I) that if we couldn’t protect our farmland or our children, how were we supposed to keep going?” Guo recalled. “That’s when I made up my mind to devote my life to this fight.”

Year after year, Guo and his colleagues have continued to plant trees each spring and fall,     9     (watch) out for fire and pruning (修剪) them in the winter. The vegetation coverage rate in Babusha has increased     10     less than 3 percent to 70 percent and the desert no longer moves further south.

The culture of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) became     1     (increasing) popular with the arrival of the 31st FISU World University Games in Chengdu in July, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province. “We mainly promote TCM culture by displaying TCM     2     (element) such as TCM-themed backdrops, samples, 3D paintings made from acupuncture (针灸) tools, and herbal bags,” explained Deng Hongyuan,     3     staff member at the TCM culture area.

Visitors to the TCM culture area     4     (treat) to live shows of therapeutic massages (治疗性按摩) , Taijiquan, and Wuqinxi, a set of exercises     5     (inspire) by the movements of five animals as well as Baduanjin. Baduanjin, a form of gentle exercise that is a part of TCM culture,     6     is similar to Taijiquan and other TCM therapies, became a hit for its health benefits. Ancient Chinese medical books, TCM equipment, and medicinal materials unique     7     Sichuan are also on display.

“Foreign guests particularly enjoyed experiencing Chinese therapeutic massages. They were highly     8     (appreciate) of our massage services. They even asked if they could have this experience every day,” Deng noted.

“TCM culture is an important part of traditional Chinese culture and we are committed to     9     (broaden) its reach through the World University Games of Chengdu. We hope to enable more people     10     (learn) about TCM culture,” Deng concluded.

Recently, a poll(民意调查) finds that although almost three in four adults played sports when they     1     (be) younger, only one in four continue to play sports as adults.

But that decline in interest doesn’t stop parents from encouraging their children to make sports a part of their lives.     2     fact, almost nine in ten parents     3     middle school or high school aged children play sports say that their children benefit     4     great deal or quite a bit from playing sports.

And, while most adults no longer play sports     5     (they), the majority of parents say it is very likely or somewhat likely that their children will continue playing sports when they become adults. One in four parents also hope their children will become     6     (profession)athletes.

“Sports are an important part of a healthy community. When a reporter first met Jake Lee Pinnick, the American’s fluency in Putonghua     1    (absolute) shocked her.

Dressed     2     a dark blue Taoist(道家服) with a black cloth bag and several long bags     3    (contain) dongxiao and chiba—two kinds of traditional Chinese bamboo musical instruments-he said he always wears a Taoist uniform and carries along a dongxiao for practice wherever he goes.

In 2010, Pinnick moved all the way to Wudang from the US when he was just 20 years old and     4    (form) a deep connection with Wudang, martial arts and traditional Chinese culture ever since. To him, Wudang has now become a second home and martial arts and traditional Chinese culture are     5     his “lifetime passion” settled. In his view, martial arts and maintaining a peaceful mind     6    (be) practices worth pursuing. To him, promoting Wudang martial arts and culture is his inescapable mission and     7    (responsible).

Now he has over 600 thousand     8    (follower) across all his social media accounts, attracting many traditional Chinese culture learners and foreign martial arts enthusiasts. In the future, Pinnick expects     9    (open) a martial arts school in China or in the US, to teach more people around the world about real martial arts and traditional Chinese culture, and to become     10     bridge between cultures.
