Desertification, the name for     1     happens when land that can be used to grow crops turns into desert, is a growing world problem. The United Nations and     2     (it) member countries are working hard to fight desertification.

China has taken many steps     3     (stop) the process of desertification, including encouraging farmers to build fences, and providing money for people in dry areas to plant more trees and bushes. This is one of     4     cheapest and best ways of decreasing desertification. At the moment, China is planting a ‘Green Wall’ of plants and bushes in the north-east part of the country that could grow even     5     (long) than the Great Wall. China is also spending money trying to find and drill for underground water.

The China National Desertification Monitoring Centre (CNDMC) was set     6     in 1996 to do research into the problem of desertification. The centre has over 300 scientists devoted to     7     (find) measures that will stop desertification.

However,     8     (science) research is not the only way to help. There are many things that everyone can do to help stop desertification. These include better administration of areas that are likely to turn into desert, and training people in how to use water     9     wasting it. There are also things that can     10     (do) at a national or international level, such as sharing information between countries and using satellites to pick out areas likely to be affected by desertification.

Having at least 140 sections open to visitors, Huangshan Mountain is     1     major tourist destination in China. Huangshan City     2    (change) its name from Tunxi in 1987 in order to promote Huangshan     3    (tour). In 2007, for instance, more than 1.5 million tourists visited the mountain. The foot of the mountain is linked by rail     4     by air to Shanghai, and also is accessible from cities such as Hangzhou and Wuhu.

Since 1990, there were more than 50 kilometers of footpaths     5    (provide) access to scenic areas for visitors and staffers of the facilities. Today there are also cable cars that tourists may use to ride     6    (direct) from the base to one of the summits. Throughout the area there are hotels and guest houses that accommodate overnight visitors, many of     7     hike up the mountains, spend the night at one of the peaks     8    (view) the sunrise, and then go down by a     9    (difference) route the next day. The area is classified as a AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration.

The hotels, restaurants, and other facilities(设施) at the top of the mountain are serviced and kept     10    (supply) in store by porters who carry resources up the mountain on foot, hanging their goods from long poles balanced over their shoulders or backs.
