“Hey, man, I’m hungry,” I said. “I’m going to go get something to eat.”

My friend Gabe smiled and warmly responded, “Alright, but you’re crazy. I can’t stop. The weather’s so good! Look for me here at the bottom of this lift (滑雪者用的上下缆车) when you’re done. I’m gonna go take some more runs.”

I released my bindings and began to walk in the direction of the smell of hot pizza. I shouted over my shoulder, “I’ll catch up to you later.”

I didn’t think twice about those few little words at the time. My friend Gabe and I had been snowboarding all morning. I was too hungry to take another run, so I decided to eat something at the lodge.

After a quick slice of pizza in the lodge, I would soon be back on the mountain with my friend. But taking a break from this snow-capped playground was just not something Gabe would do. He continued back to the crowded life line with a sparkle (火花) in his eyes. I remember thinking: that guy is never going to stop riding, not on a day like this at least.

As I waited for my mom at the lodge, I saw Mona, the other kid Gabe and I had been riding with that day, was standing by the parking lot and she looked beat. As I got closer, I saw that she had tears in her eyes.

There was nothing left for Santa to say except,

Collin was lying on his back, tossing a baseball toward the ceiling when his bedroom door opened. His sister, Carina, barged in and perched on the edge of his bed. Collin could tell she’d been crying.

“What’s wrong?” Collin asked. “Homesick again?”

Carina nodded.

“Yeah, me too.” Collin sighed.

Their family had move to the Moon Colony 4 nearly four months ago. It still didn’t feel like home. The dwellings were cozy, but outside everything was gray, rocky and lifeless.

“I miss my friends,” Carina said gloomily. “And green grass and swimming, and everything. I even miss the sound of rain on the roof.”

The colony was housed inside a huge transparent dome. There was no weather there at all—no rain or snow or even wind.

“Worst of all,” Carina continued, “my birthday is in two days, and I don’t think Mom and Dad are planning anything special. They’re too busy.”

“She’s probably right.” thought Collin. Life on the Moon was hectic for scientists like their parents. He doubted they had time to plan a party. And how could they anyway? Things such as balloons and birthday candles didn’t exist on the colony. We don’t even have the rations to make a cake.

“Don’t worry.” Collin put an arm around Carina’s shoulder.

Collin wandered toward the agricultural center, where his mom worked. Some days, he helped her take measurements or harvest crops. Today he found her taking notes in a patch of tall tube-like plants.

“What are those?” he asked.

“Bamboo plants,” said Mom. “They are strong and grow fast. They make good building material.”

He spotted a one-foot section of bamboo that had broken from a larger stalk. “May I have that piece?”

“Sure.” Mom handed it to him and made a note on her chart.

The next day, as his teacher supervised, Collin drilled tiny holes into the piece of bamboo and inserted small nails into each hole. He poured a handful of Moon pebbles inside the tube and taped heavy-duty fabric scraps over the open ends.

My parents and I had just driven down the narrow mountain road from Marrakesh with all its sharp bends, and had finally arrived at Merzouga. Before us stretched the unending sand dunes (沙丘) that marked the beginning of the Sahara.

Our vehicle set off, quietly running over the sand and small stones. It wasn’t long before we were surrounded by enormous sand dunes, towering above us on all sides. The wind was blowing grains of sand from the tops of the dunes, the sun was beating down hard and bright, and the sky was a deep shade of blue that I had never seen before. The wild beauty of the desert was about to reveal itself. There was not a plant to be seen. The desert appeared completely empty, which was calming and threatening at the same time.

Eventually, as the last rays of sunlight were falling on the sand, we arrived at our desert camp. Stars were already shining brightly in the darkening sky and it was getting cold with the approach of the night. I grabbed my bag and headed towards the warm campfire. I was starving and rushed to put a steak on the barbecue. We enjoyed two days in the camp with camel riding and campfire parties before we set off for Kenya.

A few days after our departure from the camp, we were very near to our rest camp in the Amboseli National Park. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, rose up over the plains before us. Tall grasses and trees dotted the plains, which were alive with the African wildlife. Giraffes, with their long necks, were pulling leaves from the highest branches. In the distance, elephants were eating grass, ears flapping lazily as they moved slowly over the plains.

The rest camp was in sight. Several huts made from brick settle across a large pool of water. The walls reflected the afternoon sun. My father, against my mother’s advice, decided to drive through the pool of water that stretched across the dirt road.

The Principal and the Popcorn Popper

Spring was approaching. Principal (校长)Peters was wandering in the empty part of the huge school yard when the students' request flashed through his mind again. It couldn't be better to eat the cabbages, carrots, or eggplants planted by themselves. But how to raise money for seeds and tools?

The topic came up at the teachers' meeting. Teachers suggested various means of collecting money with enthusiasm; one teacher suggested, “We have a popcorn popper (爆米 花机)in the teachers' lounge (休息室).How about kids making popcorn to sell?”

When the popcorn proposal reached the students, they jumped with joy. Agreement was reached -every Thursday, in their labor course, by selling popcorn for 25 cents a bag, they could enjoy a snack while raising money to buy seeds and tools for their garden.

Soon the first Thursday came. Principal Peters got to his office as usual just right next to the teachers' lounge. Hearing popping sound, he smiled, for it meant the promise of the potential garden. But it was REALLY loud. He wrapped a scarf around his head to block his ears. When the first Thursday was over, he breathed a sigh of relief. But the next Thursday, popping sound happened again. This time, he had brought earplugs. The day, it seemed, would last forever. But for the kids' garden dream, he put up with it willingly.

The following Thursdays witnessed Principal Peters attempting to pile gym mats against his office walls and asking the fifth grade to practice for their concert in the hallway outside his office. The "unbearable" popping sound seemed to have taken root in his head! But for the kids' vegetable garden dream, he put up with it willingly.

On the 11th Thursday, he went to the teachers' lounge again to see how much money was still needed. Seeing the Principal coming with a hard-hidden painful expression, the students responded cheerfully, “Only with 41 dollars our garden dream will come true.” Hearing this, Principal Peters left without saying anything.

Henry once worked in a middle school in a remote area. He loved to teach the teenagers. He worked to understand what his students were thinking and feeling in order to meet their needs. When a student was struggling, he would work harder to show the child that he or she was capable and cared for. He would try everything in order to help every student achieve success in and out of the classroom. But he would never discover that the impact his small act of kindness had on one student after he left the profession to join the navy,

Henry was teaching science then, there was one girl who sat at the front of the class and was filled with typical middle school pain and anxiety. Her name was Mary. She was a newcomer then. She wasn't accepted by the classmates that soon. She was quiet and kept to herself and always writing a journal during lessons. Henry was looking for a chance to give her a hand but had realized this task was tough.

That class Henry decided to look over her shoulder and see what she was writing. On a small piece of paper he   saw the painful words “I am not good enough. I'm ugly. I’m stupid. No one likes me. I hate myself.” The girl was absorbed in her loneliness and sadness and didn't realize she was overseers.

This task was more challenging because he had never seen a young girl was so disappointed and sad. Great teachers knew that putting extra effort, a kind heart and soul into caring for his students made all the difference. Without thinking, Henry snatched (一把抓起) the notebook from her and started writing in it “You're great, you're beautiful, you're intelligent, you're loved”. The opposite of everything she wrote, then handed it back. He smiled at her with encouragement saying nothing.

Mary was surprised at her teacher's behavior. But when she read the words he wrote, tears welled down her face.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One evening a middle-aged lady was walking down the street when she noticed an old beggar sitting on the corner. The man was elderly, unshaven, and ragged. As he sat there, pedestrians walked by him giving him dirty looks. They clearly wanted nothing to do with him because of who he was - a dirty, homeless man. But when she saw him, the woman was moved to sympathy.

It was very cold that day and the man had his torn coat - more like an old suit coat rather than a warm coat - wrapped around him. She stopped and looked down. “Sir?” she asked. “Are you all right?”

The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly accustomed to the finer things of life. Her coat was new. She looked like that she had never missed a meal in her life. His first thought was that she wanted to make fun of him, like so many others had done before. “Leave me alone,” he shouted.

To his amazement, the woman continued standing. She was smiling - her even white teeth displayed in extremely bright rows. “Are you hungry?” she asked.

“No,” he answered ironically. “I've just come from dining with the president. Now go away.”

The woman's smile became even broader. Suddenly the man felt a gentle hand under his arm. “What are you doing, lady?” the man asked angrily. “I said to leave me alone.”

Just then a policeman came up. “Is there any problem, ma'am?” he asked.

“No problem here, officer,” the woman answered. “I'm just trying to get this man to his feet. Will you help me?”

The officer scratched his head. “That's old Jack. He's been a fixture around here for a couple of years. What do you want with him?”

“See that cafeteria over there?”she asked. “I'm going to get him something to eat and get him out of the cold for a while.”

8 . 阅读下面材料。根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Joel stared at the ground. Rather, he stared at what was lying on the ground:a robotic glove. It was made of metal, with black and yellow paint. Joel looked around his backyard. How did a robotic glove end up next to his dad’s vegetable garden?

In any case, Joel had found it. And no one else was around.

That meant only one thing: finders keepers. Wasn’t that how finders keepers worked? If you found something and couldn’t find the owner, it was yours.

The robotic glove was now Joel’s. Picking up the glove. Joel realized it wasn’t as heavy as he expected it would be. Even though it was much bigger than his own hand, he decided to try it on.

He slipped his hand inside and felt the machine come to life. It beeped(发哔哔声)three times. Joel moved his fingers, and the robot fingers moved too. Joel walked over to a large tree branch that had fallen in his yard and wrapped the robotic fingers around it. He lifted the branch. It should have been heavy, but with the glove it was no heavier than a small branch.

He couldn’t believe it. Maybe it was a kind of antigravity machine reported in the newspaper.

Now, what was he going to do with it?

Joel’s mom was inside rearranging the furniture. He could walk in and say “Do you need a hand with that?” before easily picking up the couch and setting it somewhere else.

At the library, he could say “Let me help” and carry in a tall stack of boxes filled with books. At the park, he could say “How about we eat lunch over there?” and carry the picnic table to a shady spot.

Everything would feel as light as a pencil. He’d feel like a superhero.

But first, he wanted to show his dad what he’d found. He started running toward the front yard. That’s when he heard someone call, “Has anyone seen my robotic glove?” Joel stopped short.

Near the garage, his dad was talking to their new next-door neighbor, Mr. Shore.

“I haven’t seen a robotic glove,” Joel’s dad said.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一 篇完整的短文。

I was still a thief when I met Anil. And though only 15, I was an experienced and fairly successful hand.

Anil was about 25—a tall, thin fellow—and he looked easy-going, kind and simple enough for my purpose. I might be able to get into his confidence.

I gave him my most appealing smile. “I want to work for you.” I said.

“But I can't pay you.”

Perhaps I had misjudged the man. I asked, “Can you feed me?”

“Can you cook?”

“I can cook.” I lied.

“If you can cook, then I can feed you.”

The meal I cooked that night must have been terrible because Anil gave it to a stray dog and old me to be off. But I just hung around smiling in my most appealing way, and he couldn't help laughing.

Later he patted me on the head and said never mind, he'd teach me to cook. He also taught me to write my name and said he would soon teach me to write whole sentences and to add numbers. I was grateful. I knew that once I could write like an educated man there would be no limit to what I could achieve.

One evening he came home with a small bundle of notes, saying he had just sold a book to a publisher. At night, I saw him put the money under the mattress (床垫).

It's time I did some real work, I told myself. After all, he doesn't even pay me.

Anil was asleep. I crept up to the bed. Anil was sleeping peacefully. My hand slid under the mattress, searching for the notes. When I found them, I drew them out without a sound. Anil sighed in his sleep and turned on his side, towards me. I was frightened and quickly crawled out of the room.

I began to run, holding the notes by the string of my pajamas (睡衣). But I slowed down and sat down in the shelter of the clock tower. I should go back to Anil, I told myself, if only to learn to read and write.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

The day my dad gave me a BB gun was my twelfth birthday, and I almost couldn't help jumping up and down when I saw what it was.

With a smile, he led me outside and showed me how to shoot ― first loading the gun, pumping it a few times, aiming, and finally, firing. Before handing the gun to me, he said seriously, “I don't ever want to see you killing anything. That's not the reason why I bought you this gun.” I thought he was afraid that I'd learn what real power felt like. Anyway, it was okay with me because I figured I'd find many other targets.

“Hey, Mike.” I yelled to my friend upon making one of my greatest discoveries. “Check this out.” I aimed at the top of the telephone pole. “What're you doing?” he asked. I fired, and the BB hit the top of the pole, causing a loud “DING” to ring out. “Cool, ” Mike said. I smiled like a king ― a smile that grew even wider when Mike couldn't hit the same target. The good thing was that no matter how many times you shot those things they never broke. Then again, maybe that was why it got boring.

A few months later, I found myself walking down the street, gun in hand, searching for new targets. I stopped by a telephone pole, popping off a few shots with nothing better to do. Suddenly, a bird swooped (俯冲) down and landed on the wire. It cooed and walked slowly, completely unaware of my watchful eye. Here I was, a bored kid, holding a BB gun, and a bird standing right there in front of me―and no one around to tell my dad. It was so perfect. I figured it was a sign from God. I aimed straight at the bird, held my breath, and squeezed slowly upon the trigger (扳机). But I hesitated. I was about to shoot a bird, feeling at one moment uneasy, at another excited. The exciting part won. I fired.
