Maisie and her car
Maisie usually goes swimming every morning before she goes to work. She leaves home at 5:30 am and drives to the swimming pool. She swims for an hour, and then hurries home for a shower and breakfast before she leaves for work at 8 am.
One Thursday morning, Maisie drove to the swimming pool as usual. She did not feel happy because she had a quarrel (争吵) on the phone with a co-worker the night before. She was still thinking about it and feeling so depressed that she did not want to go to work.
“Swimming may make me feel better. Come on,” Maisie said to herself. She parked the car opposite the sports center, took her sports bag from the back seat and walked to the building, forgetting to put on the handbrake (手刹).
While Maisie was swimming, a strong wind came and the car started to move. Very, very slowly the car moved out of the car park and across the road. It was early morning so the road was empty. There were no people walking around and no other cars on the road.
A few moments later, there was a sudden announcement on the loud speaker system. “Is the owner of a white Honda, number plate XJY436, in the pool?”
“XJY436! That’s my car,” thought Maisie. She swam to the side of the pool and climbed out. A lifeguard was standing next to the pool. Maisie ran up to him. ”That’s my car, “she said.” Did I leave the lights On? “No,” said the lifeguard, laughing. “Come and see.” Maisie followed the lifeguard out to the entrance of the sports center. “Look!” said the lifeguard when he pointed to the big entrance door. “Oh, no!” shouted Maisie. Her car was in the doorway. It was half inside the building and half outside. No one could go in or out of the sports center.

I wasn’t used to seeing her hands so still.When I came downstairs, her quiet hands made even her voice stay still.I missed her voice more than ever.
I tried to help her find her voice.“Grandma, tell me about when you were a little girl,” I begged, knowing she loved to tell stories.“Tell me about Peti and Zoe.” Peti and Zoe were her brother and sister.“That was so long ago, Ann,” whispered Grandma.“I can barely remember.” But I still remembered her story about Peti cutting off Zoe’s two beautiful long braids (辫子) and then hiding them in the closet.Were those words still moving silently in her head?
Mom was sorting through our clothes for spring.“Ann, take these out to the trash,” Mom said.“There’s no need to keep worn-out clothes.”
I looked sadly at the pile of sweaters and then picked it up.
“Wait,” Grandma said as I walked by her and put the pile downstairs.“Let me see those.”
“Ann, wind the yarn (纱线) of the old sweater into a ball, like this.Then you can use the yarn to knit something new.” Grandma wrapped yarn around and around her fingers, first in one direction and then the other to keep the ball round.
After dinner Grandma fell asleep in her chair.
Mom came downstairs with an old pair of gloves with small holes to add to the pile of sweaters.

My dad was a cleaner in my school. When I was 12, I decided to study hard to have a life different from his.
One day when Dad asked me to play basketball with him, I just replied, “I’m busy. I want to study well so that I can become a rich man. I don’t want to be a cleaner like you, Dad!” He was shocked (震惊的), but I didn’t care and continued studying hard. Finally, I graduated from high school with honors, and decided it was time to break free from my dad and follow my dreams.
“Dad, I got a scholarship to a law school in California,” I told him. “I’ll leave in 3 days.” My dad was surprised but proud of me. As I left for the airport 3 days later, he said, “Son, wherever you go, welcome back home.” I ignored his words and flew to California.
After I graduated, I found a great job there. Later, I was made manager and earned much money. I no longer remembered my father was a cleaner. I had forgotten my dad, who was still cleaning my school. I seldom answered his calls or wrote back to him. I was busy; I still had a lot more to achieve.
With time, the more success I tasted, somehow, the lonelier I became. I felt especially lonely on my 31st birthday. I kept checking my phone, hoping someone wished me a happy birthday. But there wasn’t a single call or message. Later that evening when I returned home from my office, something in my mailbox drew my attention.
“A letter?” I whispered and saw it was from my father. He never forgot to mail me a letter on my each birthday. However, I never took the trouble to read it. “How did I ignore him?” I thought. I brought the letter home and took out his earlier letters. And I opened one. It read, “Wherever you are, I love you to the last drop of my blood. I wish you a happy life.”

When Hope was 10 years old and Hannah was 8 years old, they were looking for a gift to give Tim for Christmas. “Dad often gave us gifts. Now I think we should also give one to him,” Hope suggested. Hannah said it was a good idea. And they wondered what gift they should give their dad. After thinking for long, they thought of the National Geographic magazines. Their dad always loved the magazine. But because money was especially tight (紧的) that year, Tim had not been able to subscribe (订阅) to it. “The magazines sold in the bookstore aren’t that cheap. Well, at least, we can buy one and give it to Dad as a Christmas gift,” Hope said.
Not having any money of their own, Hope and Hannah then wondered how to solve the problem. Finally, they decided to find part-time jobs in the small neighborhood to make money. First, they needed to be permitted (允许) by their dad.
When they shared their decision one night, Tim thought they wanted to buy some toys, candy or something else for themselves. Since he couldn’t give them pocket money and thought part-time jobs could be helpful to a kid, he agreed. But he didn’t want them to be too tired, so he reminded them, “When you find you dislike the jobs, you can just give up.” Hope and Hannah smiled and nodded, and Tim thought they surely wouldn’t stick to their part-time jobs for long.

When my son was seven years old, he wanted nothing more than to have a friend. Although he tried to make friends, the fact that he was autistic (患自闭症的) and largely non-verbal made other children his age uncomfortable. Almost never had another child accept an invitation for a play date.
My son handled the rejection much better than I did. He told me that he had been praying that he would get a best friend and he knew that his prayers were going to be answered because of what a man told him in a dream.
When the “nice man” in his dream asked him what he wanted in a best friend, my son said that he wanted someone who would always play with him, and who would like to run around a lot but also be calm at times. This best friend would be there and help him feel better when he was sad, would stick by him when he was sick, and would never want to get away from him. When he told the man this, the man smiled and told my son that he had picked out the perfect best friend for him.
The next night he had the dream again. In his dream, the nice man told my son he had picked out a puppy to be his best friend. This puppy would love to play, and would love to run around, but would also want to be calm and just cuddle. When my son was sick, the puppy would stay by him, protecting him. When he was sad, the puppy would lick him, and make him feel better. This puppy would love my son more than anyone or anything else in the world, and would be the very best friend that a boy could have.
When my son told me all of this, I was shocked. My son, who rarely spoke more than a few words at a time, was calmly explaining paragraphs’ worth of information to me. Despite this, what my son said next shocked me even more.
“Mummy, he also told me that I am getting my puppy today. She is a girl puppy, with black on her back, and brown on her belly. She is not very big, and will run up to me when I see her, jump up on me, and lick my face while she wags her tail. Her name is going to be Zorro, and I love her already. We need to go to the building and get her. She is waiting for me. The man told me.”

Months later after Jenny was in college, the Christmas holiday approached. She applied herself to the final exams. Jenny’s eyes were aching from lack of sleep. She tried to rub(擦) the tiredness from her eyes, but failed. So she stood and stretched and looked through the window to watch the first snow of the season.
As she stared out of the window of her dorm, memories of once happily staying with her family members for the holiday hit her mind.
Feeling sad, Jenny sat back down at her desk and tried to focus on her studies. In just seven more days, the final exams would be over and all the students in the freshman college dorm would be going home except her. She would be moving temporarily to another dorm for the
Christmas break. Instead of enjoying homemade pies, cookies and roast turkey together with her family, Jenny would be eating alone in the school dining hall. It was not a prospect she looked forward to.
Jenny had no choice. She was a student from Pennsylvania attending college in Utah and her family of ten couldn’t afford to pay for her ticket home. She was able to attend college because of the several scholarships she had got.
Unable to focus her mind, Jenny stared back at the white snow dancing in the air. This would be her first Christmas away from home.

As he entered the dark and dirty inside of the building, his mind was flooded with a sense of pity. Then he saw Emily sitting on the floor, surrounded(包围) by her textbooks and notebooks.
“Emily, what are you doing here?” Mr Jackson asked, surprised.
Emily looked up and was surprised to see her teacher. She said, “Oh, Mr Jackson! I came here to do my homework. It’s quiet here, and I feel safe.”
“Why don’t you go home?” he asked, his concern(担忧) growing.
“I live with my mother. Recently, my mother lost her job and we haven’t found a house yet,” she replied. “And my father used to work here, so it’s a familiar place to me.”
Mr Jackson was heartbroken to hear this. He knew he had to do something to help Emily. He sat down beside Emily and asked her to tell him everything that was going on.
Emily shared stories about her father, who had passed away a few years before. She talked about how her mother had struggled(努力) to make ends meet.
Mr Jackson listened carefully. The more he knew about Emily, the more he realized that being a teacher was not only about teaching subjects, it was also about shaping young minds and making a difference to their lives. He decided to take action.

It was Lauren’s birthday and she told everyone in our class that there would be a magician. I really didn’t want to go because I always felt very nervous and scared if I had to go anywhere there would be lots of people (like basically everywhere). Also because the day before my dad had told me that sometimes magicians cut people in half. I cried a lot when we got there so Mum said I could stay next to her.
But when the magician got there we all had to go and sit down on the floor to watch the magic. He said “Hello, boys and girls! I’m Magic Andy!” in the loudest voice ever. Then he made everyone shout “Hello, Magic Andy! ”at him again and again, louder and louder, only I couldn’t open my mouth to say anything so I couldn’t join in.
Then Magic Andy said, “Now, who would like to be my special magical assistant?” And straight away I thought, Not Me. I don't like standing up in front of people, I don't like anyone looking at me, and I had decided by then that I didn't like magicians very much either. So everyone put their hands up apart from me. And it was a bit like being in An Actual Nightmare (噩梦) because Magic Andy did something I thought was against the law - he picked me to be his volunteer. The only person without a raised hand who really did not want to be his volunteer.
Everyone turned and stared, and I felt like they were playing a trick on me or something, because I had accidentally volunteered myself by Definitely Not Volunteering. I felt hot and dizzy and I couldn't move my head to see if Mum was behind me. I was frozen to the spot but someone helped me up to the front and everyone was clapping.
