1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My dad was a cleaner in my school. When I was 12, I decided to study hard to have a life different from his.

One day when Dad asked me to play basketball with him, I just replied, “I’m busy. I want to study well so that I can become a rich man. I don’t want to be a cleaner like you, Dad!” He was shocked (震惊的), but I didn’t care and continued studying hard. Finally, I graduated from high school with honors, and decided it was time to break free from my dad and follow my dreams.

“Dad, I got a scholarship to a law school in California,” I told him. “I’ll leave in 3 days.” My dad was surprised but proud of me. As I left for the airport 3 days later, he said, “Son, wherever you go, welcome back home.” I ignored his words and flew to California.

After I graduated, I found a great job there. Later, I was made manager and earned much money. I no longer remembered my father was a cleaner. I had forgotten my dad, who was still cleaning my school. I seldom answered his calls or wrote back to him. I was busy; I still had a lot more to achieve.

With time, the more success I tasted, somehow, the lonelier I became. I felt especially lonely on my 31st birthday. I kept checking my phone, hoping someone wished me a happy birthday. But there wasn’t a single call or message. Later that evening when I returned home from my office, something in my mailbox drew my attention.

“A letter?” I whispered and saw it was from my father. He never forgot to mail me a letter on my each birthday. However, I never took the trouble to read it. “How did I ignore him?” I thought. I brought the letter home and took out his earlier letters. And I opened one. It read, “Wherever you are, I love you to the last drop of my blood. I wish you a happy life.”

Sam, Wayne, Tim and Will were classmates. They loved music and formed a band in their high school. Although after graduation they met each other less and less, their friendship remained deep.

Now, when they were in their 60s, they decided to gather in a park to give a performance in memory of their good days. That day, when Sam, Wayne and Tim arrived there, they received a message from Jenny, Will’s wife. Once reading it, they hurriedly drove to Will’s house, where they found Will was sleeping after taking medicine. The tall and handsome man was weak and thin, which moved them to tears. And that day, they found out the whole story of Will’s illness from Jenny.

“Will’s heart condition has been worsening for a long time,” Jenny said. “Doctors said without an operation he would die six months later. But the operation costs $20,000. Now, after all the treatments, we don’t have that kind of money anymore.” Sam, Wayne and Tim comforted her and immediately made a plan to help Will.

The next day, they gathered early in a park, two blocks away from their high school, and put up a poster: “Playing for Will”. Then, they stood there for hours, playing song after song. Moved, many passers-by listened and left coins and bills.

But by the third day, the three men found it hard for them to support long time of performing. “Alright,” Sam said, “we’ll do several more days of this. Then we should rethink our plan.”

Just then, a little girl pointed at the poster of Will and said excitedly, “That’s Mr Schumer!” Surprised Sam asked how she knew him. “He was the best music teacher we had in school! He once taught us rock music and even helped us build a band!” the girl smiled. And she continued, “Are you his friends? When did he begin being sick? And did he get better from his sickness?” When the nine-year-old girl, Harriet, learned about her favorite teacher’s condition and his three old friends’ idea of performing on the street, she was lost in thought and wanted to do something.

After saying goodbye to Sam, Wayne and Tim, Harriet returned to school.

We were visiting our daughter when we adopted our Boston terrier, Tad. An adorable puppy, just three months old, he became the family’s center of attention. Each morning, as soon as he heard my daughter Kayla moving around downstairs, he had to be taken down for playtime before she left for work. When she came home from work, we had him waiting for her at the door.

After three weeks we left for home. On the drive, we let Tad talk to Kayla on the phone each night. Once home, every time we called Kayla or she called us, we always put Tad on. He scratched the phone and listened intently and tried to look into the phone to see her.

One Saturday, Kayla called while we were out. She left a message. Tad was standing beside me when I pressed the button to listen to the message. He listened to her talking and cocked his head, grinning at me. I played it again for him.

A few days later, I was taking my shower when I heard the answering machine come on and Kayla leave a message. I thought it was strange when I heard her message repeat and the machine announce, “End of messages.” A few seconds later Kayla’s message began yet again.

Wondering what was going on, I climbed out of the shower, wrapped a towel around myself and headed into the living room. There stood Tad, listening to the answering machine. I stopped and watched. When the message finished, he stood up with his feet against the edge of the low table, reached over with one paw (爪子) and slapped (拍打) the answering machine. The message came on again. He dropped back on the floor and listened happily. I told him “no,” and distracted (使分心) him from the answering machine while I erased (抹去) the message.

“I look like a clown (小丑)!” Winston thought sadly. He pulled his cap down, thankful for the cover it provided. He wanted to escape the attention of the people outside the barbershop (理发店). He looked around before hurrying away into the darkness to put some distance between himself and the curious eyes of others.

As he moved quickly down the street,Winston wondered why he hadn’t spoken up to prevent the terrible haircut. He felt sad and questioned why this had happened to him. Did the barber give him this messed-up haircut on purpose? Winston didn’t believe it because the barber looked very friendly. But it seemed so crazy! Could he have unknowingly offended the barber, and this disastrous hairstyle was the barber’s way of getting back at him?

Winston was also worried that Jack would laugh at him. Jack was his cousin and liked playing jokes. But maybe he wouldn’t; he was understanding too. Winston kept thinking about it.Upon entering his new home, ,Winston’s mom greeted him from the kitchen. She called out to him, asking to see his new hairstyle. Winston walked into the kitchen, his cap still on, and slowly took it off.

His mother looked very surprised. She couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Oh déar,” she shouted. “What happened?” Winston stood silently for a moment before letting out his anger. He blamed his mom for bringing him to this place, torcing him to attend a new school where he believed everyone would make fun of him. He also said he hated this terrible hairstyle, and his hair was beyond fixing.

Just as his anger was about to grow, the doorbell-rang. Winston’s mom calmly told him to answer it. As he opened the door, he forgot to cover his terrible haircut, and there stood his cousin Jack. Since it was Saturday today, they had planned to go skating together. Winston felt extremely embarrassed.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sean turned to look at his father, who was standing confidently on his new sailboat. Sean hated it that he couldn’t remember all of the sailing terms (术语) and skills his dad taught him. However, he pushed himself to ask, expecting his father’s response. “Which way are we turning?” “We’re coming about” his father said firmly. “That means we are turning into the wild. That way.” His father said, pointing to the right side of the boat. “Time for you to make a bowline knot (单套结)!”

Sean reached for a rope and tried his best to make one. His father had taught him the skill dozens of times, which could not only help moor (停泊) the boat but also save everyone in emergency. After practising several times, he finally knew how to do this correctly and quickly. He looked back at his father, hoping for a praise. But his dad was looking up at the sail (帆), not at him. He untied the knot and dropped the rope under the seat, filled with a sense of loss.

He looked up at the sky. Dark clouds gathered overhead and the wind began blowing. “Hey, Sean, come and take the wheel for a minute!” His father ordered. Sean didn’t want to, not did he want to see that disappointing look on his father’s face. “Uh, year!” Sean locked the sail in place and went to keep the wheel.

“Just keep her going straight. I’m going to check something.” Sean held the wheel tightly. Suddenly, the wind changed direction. The boat shook sharply and even tipped (倾斜) to one side. “Dad!” he called, but no response. He didn’t see him anywhere on the sailboat. Just then, the water became calm a little. Sean caught the chance to look the wheel quickly. He looked out at the huge crashing waves. Then he saw it--- a flash of a figure.

Officer Jonda was driving on a dangerous road one cold, dark winter night. The storm made it difficult to see, but she could tell the car in front of her was swaying. Although it was still within its lane, Jonda had a sixth sense for accidents and lived in terror of them ever since that awful night so many years ago. She still couldn't abolish the terrible image of that teenager screaming for help, her help. Help that she had been unable to give as she was driven back by the intense heat of the car fire. These were memories Jonda could never really turn off. She counted on her training for support, and these days she never ignored any signs of the next accident.

Her partner, David, took the first step.   “Let’s pull that car over before someone gets hurt,”   he said. The car ahead slowed down, but not enough to stop, and ended up sliding off the road into the Dalton River. Jonda quickly stopped her police car and rushed to the water's edge, yelling at David to call for backup. The rain had caused the river to rise and the car was half submerged(淹没), trapped against a tree, and the passenger seat was underwater. Jonda was filled with a sense of dread. In the heavy rain, she could barely see, but she could hear the trapped driver screaming and banging on the window.

“Never again!”   This is too much, too familiar, Jonda thought.

She called for the window hammer, rushing towards the car. The water was rising quickly, reaching up to her waist and chilling her to the bone. She had to work fast or risked losing feeling in her lower body. Through the window, she saw an old woman named Sandy,   chest-deep in water, wearing a work badge.

David caught up with Jonda and passed her the window hammer. Jonda yelled at the old woman to turn away from the glass. She swung the hammer, but the thick glass barely cracked.   Her heart sank as she realized that the car was slowly being freed from the tree.

So he took the bird in his hands, carried it carefully home and showed it to his parents. At once, his parents took action. They washed the bird and found it injured. With the help of his parents, the young boy dressed the wound. But it would need time and care for the bird to completely recover. As the bird had become dear to his heart, the boy immediately offered to care for the bird.

The boy named his new friend “Lucky”. He began to feed the bird and he even ran out to collect grass to build a soft nest (鸟巢) for the bird. Then, he put the nest beside his bed. But what then? The boy became thoughtful and started to think. “If Lucky started to fly, it could simply fly away one day.” But that would not happen. Sometimes, the support and encouragement that we give each other can spread and truly change people’s lives. In the case of one Florida student David Smith, the support of a local network of strangers and his school made memories he will never forget.

When Laura Snyder, an elementary school teacher at Altamonte Elementary School, celebrated “College Colors Day” with her class, David melted her heart.

Despite being a devoted fan of the University of Tennessee (UT) sports teams, he did not own any official merchandise (货品) and resorted to his creativity to show his support. The young student drew the school’s logo on a piece of paper, and attached it to an orange T-shirt to resemble (相似于) the school colors of the UT sports teams.

“When the day finally arrived, he was so excited to show me his shirt,” Snyder revealed on Facebook. “I was impressed that he took it one step further to make his own label.”

Unfortunately, by mid-day, David was in tears.

“At lunch, some girls made fun of his sign that he had attached to his shirt. He felt extremely depressed. He has lost his former confidence and smile, and rarely talks about his favorite sports team.” said Snyder.

Determined to make the situation right, Snyder went on Facebook with the hope of reaching the staff members from the university. Though she originally just planned to get David some official merchandise, what happened next took everyone by surprise.

In a week, the post had gained so much attention that tens of thousands of people had shared the story, standing up for the student, who had been bullied (霸凌) at school. Tennessee fans from all over the country poured in with comments of support and encouragement, and soon the university even got in touch to send the boy an official package of merchandise, including T-shirts, hats, pens, towels, and water bottles.

When the package arrived at the office, Snyder called David in.

Rule one and the only rule: If the football goes into Mr. Radtke’s yard, leave the ball, run home and the kid responsible for sending the ball into the forbidden zone should tolerate the lifelong scorn (蔑视) of all the players,” said Ben gravely.

The rule that his best friend, Ben, told him again and again puzzled Joey a lot. He looked at the yard in front of him, nothing special—a lonely house with a high fence all around and a tree even taller than the fence by the close front gate.

“But Ben, we wouldn’t be harming anything. If our ball should go over his fence, I’m getting it. ”

“Good luck with that. Old man Radtke is the ugliest guy in this neighbourhood. No one dares to go into his yard. ”

“What’s so scary about him?” Joey asked, still confused.

“Big scars on his face, only one eye, and half of his teeth are missing. An ugly guy like that is definitely a bad guy.”

“But my father told me, never judge a book by its cover.”

“Whatever. Let’s play football.” Ben said, seemingly impatient.

Hearing this, Joey temporarily took the doubt off his mind and joined the boys. They passed the ball to each other and most of the time ran after the ball in the field like the wind. But suddenly, Joey kicked the ball too hard, and it soared over the fence and landed in Radtke’s yard. Seeing this, all the others ran home desperately, leaving only Joey and Ben glued to the spot.

“Get out of here, right now,” Ben urged. “Perhaps, I—I—I can get it back, without dis—disturbing Mr. Radtke,” Joey hesitated in a low voice. “But how?” returned Ben.
