Brian sat on his front doorstep. He really wanted a new bike. Joe had just gotten one for his birthday, and Tyler’s was only about a year old. Brian had had his for five years. The seat was up as high as it could go, and his legs were still too long for his bike. Brian wanted a bike just like Joe’s and Tyler’s. Their bikes were perfect for popping wheels and cruising over bumps. If only he had 110 dollars. All he could come up with was 33.67 dollars. Where could he get the rest of the money he needed?

Brian thought and thought. His birthday was still five months away, and he was too young to mow lawns. What could he do to get the money? Maybe his dad would advance his allowance for the next few months. He got three dollars every Friday if he did all of his chores. His dad had agreed to do this once before, when Brian needed an extra six dollars. Maybe his sister would loan him the money. She had a lot of money saved up from baby-sitting. Baby-sitting! That was it! Brian could baby-sit. Oops! Wait a minute. No one would hi re Brian to baby-sit. He still was not allowed to stay home by himself yet. What could he do to get the money? Brian sat and thought.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Both my parents were good at gardening. Our family of ten depended on the food we grew in our huge vegetable garden. My mother canned (把……装进罐中) much of the produce for winter, and my father sold potatoes and cabbages to the local stores and schools. Our garden was the pride of the neighborhood.

But then, one summer when I was quite young, we had a problem. Someone was stealing our vegetables. My parents were quite surprised. “I don’t get it,” my father said. “If someone wants vegetables from us, all they have to do is ask. If they can’t afford to pay for them, they could just have them.”

Then one of the neighbors tipped us off that a single elderly man who lived a short distance from us was seen selling vegetables in a nearby town. Benny didn’t have a garden, had no regular job and lived in a small, poor house. My parents found out he was taking our vegetables to earn a few extra dollars. And later, they found it was true. My father decided to deal with this situation in his own way.

One day, he told my mother that he’d go to hire (雇用) Benny. My mother was surprised, saying, “We don’t have enough money to hire anyone. Besides, why would we hire the man who’s taking our vegetables?” My father replied that he was going to hire him to guard our garden. My mother was confused and didn’t think it would work.

My father explained, “Here’s what I think. Benny has got himself backed into a corner, and I’m going to give him a way out. I think he can’t refuse me. And he sure can’t take the vegetables that he’s guarding.”

When my father told him about the job, Benny was obviously a bit shocked. But Dad solved it pretty well. “Benny,” he said, “someone, probably some kid, has been taking vegetables out of our garden. I wonder if I could hire you to guard the garden.” Then Dad added that he would also have breakfast with us every day.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Yesterday I was in a bad mood because of losing my job. I tried to find something else to do to make myself feel better. I went shopping for a pair of trainers to replace the old pair I have been wearing for too long. I would have replaced them months ago but I am one of those women who hate shopping. I hate the crowds and the heat in the shops, but mostly I hate the waiting line.

I was happy as I found my trainers very quickly, but my happiness soon disappeared when I found myself in a very long line for the payment.

This line was long and snaking around a corner. I do hate waiting but I find the best way to pass the time is to talk to the person behind me.

So I turned around and told the woman behind me that the line was looking very long and joked that I hoped we could all hang on.

She laughed and agreed. I caught an English accent(口音)as she spoke, so being a person from Liverpool in England myself, I immediately asked her where she was from.

She rewarded me with a sharp look and said, “England. ”

Immediately I realized that I had accidentally offended(冒犯)her—she was black and thought I was referring to her colour. I told her I was from Liverpool and had noticed her English accent.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语段续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,续写的词数应为150词左右。

Doris was a 68-year-old woman who lived alone. Her children lived in a different city and her husband had passed away. In order not to feel lonely, she would take daily walks at the nearby park. One afternoon she saw her neighbor’s son, Martin. He sat alone on a park bench (长椅). Concerned, Doris approached him and asked where his mother Lucy was. “She’s still at work,” Martin answered.

“She left you here so she could work? Have you been here the entire day?” Doris asked. Martin nodded, explaining his mom had just got a new job that required her to be out from 9 am to 5 pm. Doris checked her watch, seeing it was 2:30 pm. “Have you eaten?” she asked. Martin replied he had eaten some bread.

Doris felt bad for the poor boy. Not wanting to leave him alone, she sat with him and waited for Lucy to pick him up. Later Martin felt his feet were so cold. Doris found his socks were thin and worn out. She took out a shawl (披肩) from her bag and put it around Martin’s legs.

Finally, Lucy appeared. “Lucy, it’s dangerous for Martin to be out here alone the entire day, Doris said. Ashamed, Lucy said that she wanted to take care of Martin, but she had to get a job because of their increasing bills to pay.

“It’s my first day at my new job. I can’t leave Martin at home alone. If social services (社会服务机构) find it, they won’t allow me to raise him anymore. I have no choice but to leave him in the park in order to work,” she added. Doris knew Lucy was trying her best but also felt bad that Martin would have to stay out in the cold every day. After all, winter was coming.

The following morning, when Lucy went to work, Doris met her outside her home. Lucy said that Martin wasn’t feeling well and was still sleeping. He had to stay home for the day. Doris understood Lucy was risking being caught by social services leaving Martin alone at home. So, she offered, “I’d be happy to take care of Martin at your home or mine.”

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I live on the west coast of Canada and my older son lives on its east coast. He has visited his mother and me a number of times and we have visited him there with some frequency. We also talk with each other using a computer communications programme. However, because of Covid-19 travel restrictions and the extremely long distance between us, we hadn’t seen him in person for more than two years. His mother is ill and can’t travel any more so we had talked about a possible future visit with him coming but nothing had been decided, or so I thought.

Then, one day, there was a knock on the door and when I opened it, my son walked in, carrying a pot of flowers. For a moment, I didn’t know who he was and then, suddenly, he was there. He hadn’t told us he was coming and seeing him was a shock and a wonderful surprise. It had been years since I last cried. But when he walked in, I was in tears.

I think that as parents, we tend to think of our children as being young and being in need of our help even when they have reached adulthood. We have two sons, both of them grown, and we love them both but they are still, to us, our kids. Somehow, though, the sudden appearance of my older son and his month-long visit that followed let me see him in a whole new light.

Once upon a time, a delightful dog named Ripple shared a home with her owner, Emily, with whom she had formed an unbreakable bond(关系)from the early days of her puppyhood(幼年). Emily was an elderly woman who lived alone and Ripple was her faithful friend, providing her with love and companionship.

Unfortunately, one day, Emily fell ill and had to be immediately transported to the hospital. Ripple was left alone in the house, waiting anxiously for her owner to come back. As the days went by, Ripple grew more and more worried, wondering where her beloved owner had gone and when she would return.

One rainy evening, Ripple heard a car pull up outside the house. Overjoyed at the prospect of Emily’s return, Ripple ran towards the door, barking excitedly. As soon as the door opened, Ripple’s eyes widened at the sight of Emily, who was visibly weak. Overcome with emotion, Ripple’s tail wagged(摇摆)wildly as she leaped towards Emily, showing her affection.

From that moment forward, Ripple became Emily’s faithful companion, never leaving her side for a moment. She would curl up(卷曲)next to Emily’s bed every night, always watching over her. Ripple would dutifully follow Emily around the house, ensuring that she was safe and comfortable. Emily would often say that Ripple was her guardian angel, appointed to watch over her in her time of need.

As Emily’s health declined, Ripple became even more attentive. She would bring Emily her slippers, help her to the bathroom, and even fetch her medications. Emily’s family and friends would often visit her, but it was Ripple who provided her with the most comfort and love.

Regrettably, Emily eventually passed away, leaving Ripple to face a world without her beloved owner. Ripple was very sad without her owner, frequently lying in Emily’s bed, surrounded by her scent(气味), shedding tears. Ripple’s family members did their utmost to comfort her, but her sense of loss and heartbreak remained evident.

Bruce had a sweet tooth during his childhood, but it was not just sugary snacks that he desired. Being raised in a poor family was a bittersweet experience, but it gave him adaptability and ambition.

When Bruce was young, his mother would tell him that the candies in the store’s checkout line belonged to the cashier. She said that because she could not afford a 50-cent chocolate bar. Nevertheless, he saw through her trick and made a promise that he would grow up to be wealthy enough to buy what his family needed.

Bruce’s father worked hard to make money outside, so he spent less time at home. Instead of focusing on their economic instability, Bruce’s mother selflessly pushed her children to strive for success so that they could lead a more comfortable life later. She worked for long hours every night and struggled to pay the minimum due on her bills. Still, she would find time to read with Bruce and his sister, Alice. Their mother taught them the value of perseverance, education, and moral fibre. Despite lack of their father’s company, they were loved and nurtured just as much.

However, not all of life’s milestones were easy. Some, like moving and being helpless, left Bruce with an endless bitter taste. He had to deal with many problems when they moved into Maryland, several states away from their roots in Georgia, to make a living. The first few months were great: baseball games, family trips to the mall, dinners, movies, etc. It felt like they were the perfect family. Then things changed. Baseball games were too expensive, and trips to the mall were replaced with days Bruce and Alice spent isolated in the study.

As the brother and sister grew up, money was even tighter. They spent many years living in a very poor family setting. Even so, their mother inspired them to keep trying and working academically. They even cooperated with each other and developed a computer system. Alice was joking about patenting it someday. But as the saying goes, “Good things never come easy”, and success requires setbacks.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sam was a junior high school student. He lived in a community in Charlotte and usually had little exposure to country life. So much of what he knew about plants came from text-books. Sam was a kind-hearted person. He longed for a chance to explore nature and he wanted to do his part to beautify the world.

Finally, the opportunity came. On Arbor Day (植树节), his class organized a trip to a local village to plant trees. Sam was excited about it and couldn’t wait to tell his mom the good news. So the next day, Sam and his mom went to buy some tools for planting trees, including a shovel(铲), a bucket, gloves and so on.

On the day of the event, Sam and his classmates arrived early at the starting point. It was a beautiful day and everyone looked particularly happy. With the tools in hand, Sam got into the bus with everyone else and headed off to their destination.

As soon as they reached the village, all the students were divided into three teams by their teacher. One team was responsible for planting the trees, one team for shovelling the soil and one team for watering the trees. At the teacher’s command, everyone started to do their job.

However, it was the first time that many of the students had taken part in planting trees, so they had no idea about how to start. Of course, Sam was one of them. Fortunately, their teacher was a middle-aged man from the countryside who had some knowledge of planting trees. In order to set an example to the students, the teacher started to plant trees himself. After watching the teacher plant the trees, everyone also became busy. Before long, they planted hundreds of trees. Sam watched very carefully, not wanting to miss any of the details. Finally, Sam learned how to plant trees by himself and felt happy.

Owing to the spread of COVID-19, visiting loved ones has become something seemingly impossible.

Even so, when 9-year-old Romeo Cox decided what he wanted more than anything else was a hug from his 77-year-old grandmother, he didn’t let any small things, like separation, or that she was 1,700 miles away and there were no flights from his new home in Sicily to his native UK, stop him from making the trip.

“I hadn’t seen Granny for ages, so I planned secretly to go see her,” Romeo said in an interview with the Times. His parents disagreed at first, but Romeo finally talked them into letting him make the trip.

With his folks’ blessing, Romeo turned his plans into action. “I drew a map. I would walk and take boats,” he told the Times. “And I’d take Dad. It would be handy to have an adult.”

Handy indeed, since Romeo’s father, 46-year-old Phil Cox, is a retired journalist and filmmaker whose rich experiences gave him invaluable knowledge about making the way in less than ideal conditions.

Romeo and Phil set off on their journey on June 20. The pair trekked (跋涉) across Italy, Switzerland, and France.

On Saturday, we gathered at the hall to witness the award ceremony for the senior scouts (童子军). Receiving an award on such a day was a great honor for any scout, and all desired to be the scout selected to give the summary of the year’s activities for the association.

I was not the one selected to give the summary and for that, I was grateful. I could hardly stand in front of a large crowd to make a speech, but Sean could. He was selected to do the honor because he was the President of the Boy Scouts for schools. My job was much simpler. Being the Vice-President, I was very much behind the scenes, content to ensure that everything was in smooth running order.

It was an hour to go before the ceremony began, and I had put the finishing touches to the stage. Walking down the stage, I saw my teammates in a state of panic. When they saw me, they ran to me to tell me that Sean met with a traffic accident and would not make it to the award ceremony. Someone else had to give the summary. All of them looked hopefully at me, and I could feel my knees beginning to collapse.

All their arguments against my unwillingness were valid. I had a copy of the speech as well as the benefit of having seen Sean rehearse (排练) it. I was the Vice-President and therefore should take his place. Finally, I was firmly told not to decline any longer and they said that they were convinced that I would do the right thing. I sank down onto the floor, totally shocked by the situation.

I knew I was not a confident speaker, and the thought of presenting a summary in front of so many distinguished guests horrified me. To think that the fame of the scouts would take a beating because of me! The burden of responsibility troubled me greatly.
