Jameson Lobb, a 24-year-old investment banker from Toronto, was just one week into his new job on Wall Street. Over the past month, he’d been settling in to the New York City apartment he was sharing with his friend, an artificial intelligence engineer named Raphael Jafri.

Now, on Oct.4, the two were taking a quick lunchtime workout on Pier (码头) 15, overlooking the East River, when Lobb froze. “Somebody’s in the water,” he said. Before Jafri could respond, Lobb climbed over the rail at the edge of the pier and jumped into the cold, polluted water without taking the time to remove his shoes. What Lobb had heard was an alarming shout from Pier 16, nearly 50 yards away, “Help! He’s in the water!” And what he’d seen was a person floating (漂浮), motionless.

Approaching the victim, Lobb saw that it was a middle-aged man. He was big, around 200 pounds, respectably dressed and sinking fast. He was 3 feet below the surface by the time Lobb reached him. The rescuer dived, felt around, grasped the man and kicked upward until they both resurfaced.

Jafri was in water now. The two friends used all their strength to float the man on his back, even as the water threatened to overtake them. As Jafri put his arms around the man’s shoulders and Lobb supported him, the pair struggled back to Pier 15. Their lungs cried out for air and their muscles burned as they pushed and pulled the immobile figure through the freezing and fast-moving water.

The man was breathing shallowly, his face pale. When at last they reached Pier 15, they faced a new uncertainty. How to get out? The pier’s decking (甲板) stood an unreachable 10 feet above their heads. It is unlikely for them to climb onto the pier.

Suddenly the man made a slight move, struggling confusedly.

My name is Padmanaban and I am an average kid. My father is a great scientist who is known all over the world and is interested in making new things. However, I usually get around 50 points out of 100 in my exams.

One time, my scores were 45,54,65,29, and 48, as low as usual. My class topper Benjamin made fun of me like he usually did, “Here comes the son of the greatest scientist in the world. I wonder why he did not inherit (继承) his father’s brain!” The whole class laughed for the joke going on for years.

Then I found myself waiting for my birthday and my father called me to choose my present.

“What do you want for the gift?” he asked.

“I just want to beat Benjamin!” I said to him.

“You have to study for that,” my father said.

After two months, my father told me his new invention was complete. “I created the microsensor (微型传感器)!” he said. He gave it to me as my birthday gift.

“What does it do?” I asked.

“What you need to do is a little thing. You put on the power glasses, insert (插入) the sensor in it and allow it a few moments to start. Then the sensor is connected to your brain. You just think, ‘OK, micro.’ Then you ask a question. It will answer it perfectly in your brain. It’s good for your study when you meet problems you can’t solve.”

A week later, my teacher said that whoever gets the highest grade in the exam will be given a tour to the Disneyland. Wow! All I wanted to do in my life was to visit the Disneyland.

So on the day of the exam, even though I did not study, I had confidence in the sensor. It was already connected to the glasses.

“April 23 is English Language Day,” says Melissa, jumping up and down. “What a surprise, dear. What would we have done without you reminding us?” jokes Lindsay.

Melissa burst out laughing loudly. “What I meant was that April 23 is a very special day for all of us and I just wanted to make sure non e of you forgot about it.”

“What are your plans for that day?” questions Rocky. “I want to do something special to promote our beautiful English language,” dreams Jennifer.

“I have an idea,” says Lindsay. “Mango Street’s house No. 10 has been recently occupied (居住) by a family who is not fluent in the English language.”

“Where are they from?” asks Melissa. “I don’t know that but I heard the lady talking to the grocery store owner. She had great difficulty explaining her requirements. Her son and daughter also could not understand much. Why don’t we help them improve their English?” wonders Jennifer.

“It is a wonderful idea. Shall we go and let them know what we think?” asks Rocky. “Not now. We will go to meet them tomorrow,” decides Jason.

The next day, the five friends ring the doorbell of house No.10. A young girl opens the door and smiles at them. “May we come in?” asks Melissa. “We are your neighbors.”

The girl calls her mother. The sweet fat lady invites them inside with a smile. All of them sit on the chairs laid out on the front porch (门廊).

Jason explains their plan of helping them understand and speak English better. The lady seems grateful.

“We will help you in learning how to speak and understand our language,” says Lindsay.

The lady smiles her thanks. She point s to the fruits on the table. Rocky picks up one fruit at a time and names it. Jason asks her to repeat. She tries a few times and is able to call each fruit by its name. Her son and daughter learn the names too.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One summer day, I decided to go for a walk in the nearby forest. I had my backpack prepared with water, food, and sunscreen. I was excited to spend some time in nature, away from the busy city.

The forest was attractive, with towering trees that seemed to touch the sky and colorful wildflowers under my feet. I walked deeper into the woods, attracted by the pleasant sounds of birds. The path I followed was winding and narrow, but I paid little attention, carried away by the beauty. I started to notice that the trees around me looked unfamiliar. Soon I found myself lost. I realized that I had no idea which way to go.

The sun was setting and I knew that I needed to find a way out before it got dark. I started walking, trying to remember which direction I had come from. But the forest was a maze (迷宫) of winding paths, and I soon found myself going in circles. Every tree looked the same, and every path seemed to lead nowhere.

The sound of leaves made me jump. Was it a wild animal? My heart was racing and I tried to stay calm as I listened for other sounds. But there was only silence, broken now and then by the distant calls of birds.

As the sun set, I fully understood the seriousness of my situation. There was no food or water left. I was completely alone, lost in a wilderness that could easily devour (吞噬) me. I walked nervously, tripping over things in my path, feeling frightened with a racing heartbeat. Hours passed, or maybe only minutes. Time had lost all meaning in this place.

I was eleven years old. This was my first soccer game. With little knowledge of the rules of the game, I was nervous and uneasy, but still excited. With kids running at me from all directions, I observed the skills that many of my teammates possessed. Their motions appeared so suggest hand effortless, while their faces revealed their attachment to the game. I, however, lacked the spirit of playing aggressively that many of the other kids had.

To my knowledge, this game turned out to be an intense one. My team was falling behind the entire game, but toward the end, we tied it up. I watched as parents yelled and screamed, find to excitement and emotion. Many of the parents, with their waving arms and cheerful eyes, seemed more involved in the game than their children.

Suddenly, it was my turn to kick the ball. This was my chance to reveal that J was as good as everyone else. I brought my leg back and was ready to kick with all my strength. I gave a good, hard kick-one of my better—but unfortunately, I had kicked the ball in the wrong direction. Seeing the disappointed faces of the members of my team, I felt my face go from pale white to bright red; I wanted to run home, faster than I ever ran in a soccer practice.

Over the next few years, I continued to participate in a variety of sports, trying to find the one where I would be the center of attention for the right reasons. That never happened. Very often my father couldn’t wait to practise playing soccer around the backyard with me. Each time I somehow managed to trip on a shoelace (鞋带) or trip over a rock. My father continued to push me, and during my elementary-school years it seemed that I might become quite the athlete. At the same time, my little brother was suddenly not so little and began to control the family athletic field. His ability and passion for sports made me wonder why I was so different.

Sometimes, making a decision is hard for adults while easy for kids. The Jackson family had been meaning to buy some new furniture (家具) for ages, but somehow they never got round to it. There were always so many other things to do. Then one day there was a big shout from the room of Jason, 12. The rest of the family ran to see what happened.

Jason’s desk had broken. There were bits of wood and pens and papers all over the floor. And in the middle was Jason! “I was just doing my homework.” he said, “and then -bang! The desk broke. Everything fell over. I was so surprised that I fell over too!” Laughed Jane, 5. “That decides it.” said Mum. “We need to buy some new furniture before anything else breaks. Jane needs a new bed. And Jason needs a desk, so that he can do his homework. ”

So that weekend, the family got up early, and set off for the big furniture store outside town. It was huge. There was so much furniture, some of it was arranged like in a real house.

“Look, I’m playing houses (过家家),” said Jane, crawling ( 爬 ) under a table. Jane loved playing houses. “That’s enough,” Mum said, taking tight hold of Jane’s hand. Jane didn’t like it, but she had to stay close. The family chose a new bed for Jane, who was bored now, and tired. She didn’t say much, while the rest of the family discussed which desk to get. Jason had found one he liked but Mum and Dad couldn’t agree.

“It’s too big.” said Mum. “There’s not enough space in his room.”

“It’s too small,” said Dad. “There’s not enough space for his homework. ”

“I think it’s just right!” said Jason.

“Let’s get a cup of tea while we try and decide,” said Mum.“There’s a cafe in the store.” Dad thought this was a good idea. He needed a sit down, he said, and Jason really wanted a milkshake (奶昔). “What do you think, Jane?” asked Mum. Then she looked round. “Where is she? I think she’s jumping on the sofa!”

But there was no sign of Jane on the sofa. Then Jason wondered if she could be lying on her new bed!

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In the spring sun, my aunt and I headed for her flower shop. Normally I would be delighted to help in her shop, but not recently because of Rosa. Rosa was my sister, just one month old, who was settled in my old bedroom. For ten years, the small room was full of my toys and books. But now it was transformed into her baby room, decorated like a garden with pinks and yellows. My space, my old life, was gone.

“Here we are!” We arrived at the shop, a wave of colour and sweet smell washing over me. My aunt said I could pick some flowers for Mum and Dad. I used to love this, but today I was so overcome with tiredness and envy. Why bother to bring them flowers when they were enjoying Rosa at home without me?

Silently I helped my aunt arrange flowers. “Your mum told me there hasn’t been much shut eye recently for any of you.” “Not much, since Rosa the alarm clock was installed (安装).” I complained with a huge yawn (哈欠).

“I remember having to creep (蹑手蹑脚地走) around like a worn-out mouse when your mum was a baby. I spent the first months hating her so much.” “But you and Mum seem so close,” I said, guiltily hiding away my envy of Rosa.

“Now we are. But it took me years to grow into the role of big sister. Few flowers blossom (绽放) overnight, you know.” She pulled me in for aside hug, glancing up at the clock, and suggested I take a walk outside.

Behind her shop was a field dotted with spring flowers. Stepping into the field, I began to pick little flowers. It was like gathering my childhood memories. I remembered how I’d sit with Dad, making flower chains, crowning (授予) each other with the silliest titles: Queen of Junk Food and King of Mess. My smile grew wider. The shining yellow flowers reminded me of the color in Rosa’s baby room. Was she awake? I wondered.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

John and Nancy were left with their grandmother Linda after their mom was hospitalized for illness. They were curious about when they could finally see their mom.

“The hospital won’t allow her to leave until all of her medical bills are settled. I have given your mom all I could, but there’s still a large amount that we need to pay off,” Linda explained. John and Nancy missed their mom a lot and wanted her to come back home as soon as possible.

“What if we put up a lemonade stand (摊位), John?” Nancy asked her older brother.

“We can pick the lemons from the garden and make fresh juice out of them,” she suggested. Her brother smiled, “That’s a great idea, Nancy!” From then on, John and Nancy stayed outside the entire afternoon after school selling lemonade. A week went by, they only managed to earn ten dollars.

On Saturday morning, they sat on the side of the yard, looking worried. After a couple of seconds, their silent pondering (沉思) was interrupted by loud police sirens. “Hey, fellas!” one of the policemen greeted. “My colleague Jacob said that his neighbor had a lemonade stand in front of their yard.” The two children nodded. “I’m sorry, officer. But I didn’t think there would be anything wrong with that. Besides, we didn’t earn a lot,” John tried to explain.

“Don’t worry. You’re not in trouble. I bought a cup of it from you two the other day, remember? I asked why you were selling lemonade, and you told me it was to raise funds to get your mom out of the hospital,” Jacob interrupted upon seeing John and Nancy looked nervous.

“I told my friends over here, and we decided we wanted to help. Come to the back of the police car, and we have something to show you,” Jacob told the kids. They slowly made their way to the back of one of the police cars and saw a nicely-painted wooden lemonade stand. “That’s beautiful!” Nancy said in surprise.

On my fortieth birthday, I moved into my new home. In doing so, I also moved into a new neighborhood. Over the last years, I've made friends with everybody in my last neighborhood. However, I had difficulty getting on with my new next-door neighbor.

On most days, we had a friendly relationship and sometimes we were able to give each other a hand. The conflicts (冲突) came around the hunting season. I kept cows on my land and my neighbor lived by hunting. One day, my neighbor came knocking at my door, saying that he had injured a deer that then ran onto my land and asking if he could follow and finish it, and I refused. Later, I searched for the deer for several hours but found no signs of any deer.

Certainly, it caused poor relations between us. When my neighbor did kill a deer, he hung it behind his house within a few feet of my house. For days as I drove in and out, there was that deer. I knew they needed the meat; it was part of their income (收入), but the hanging deer really annoyed me. In the neighborhood I was one of the few who didn't back hunting.

For more profit, my neighbor also cut wood. He sold some for money, and used some to heat his home. One cold winter day, I asked him the price of his firewood and ordered some. The next day it was delivered. Although it looked big, it did not last as long as I expected, so I ordered some more. I was worried this could get expensive.

One day, as I drove down my path, he waved to me and said he had just cut some wood, but it was of poor quality and he needed some space. He said he would give it to me for free. I happily accepted this gift. Over time, he must have discovered that our need was great, for every time he had extra wood, we would have it. I came to appreciate his helpfulness, trust and kindness.
