1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In July 1971, I was taking a summer class in literature on the campus of SUNY Oneonta in upstate New York. Professor James walked into the classroom and announced that he had invited a special guest to class, but his guest had been delayed.

“Who’s coming?” someone asked.

“Alex Haley, who is the author of one of the books you have read for this class,” he said. “I need a volunteer to meet him in the lobby of the administration building and accompany him here.”

To my amazement, my right hand shot up as though it had a mind of its own. What was I doing? I wondered. I never volunteered for anything.

“Thank you, David,” Professor James said. “You’d better leave now. He’ll be arriving any minute.”

As I walked across campus, my anxiety grew as the massive administration building appeared ahead. I feared that I was about to embarrass myself in front of this famous gentleman by asking stupid questions. I reached the front steps and climbed them slowly.

As I pulled open the heavy glass door, I realized why I instinctively raised my hand to volunteer for this job. This man was what I wanted to be: a writer. He was living my dream. I could learn from him. I paced back and forth across the polished lobby floor until a black man with a briefcase entered the building. He stopped and scanned the lobby. His gaze fell on me.

I approached him and confirmed he was Mr. Haley. We shook hands and then began our walk across campus. I was struck by how approachable this man was. My fear was replaced by curiosity and purpose.

“Do you mind if I ask you a question?” I said. “No. Not at all,” he said.

“I’d like to become a writer, but I don’t know if I have the talent,” I said. “How did you discover that you had a gift for writing?”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had just a very wonderful day. Although all my days are always wonderful to me, the day was completely different. There was a bulletin board saying that they would need to find volleyball players for the girls and I was so happy! I have been loving playing volleyball since my mother taught me how to play. I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to play! Then I read more what was on that bulletin board, which said that there would be an audition (面试) after three weeks! “Three weeks?” I thought about it. I did know how to play volleyball but I was not much of an expert in doing it but I still wanted to try.

After that I was determined to practice volleyball every day. I practiced hard again and again each day and I never got tired of doing the same practice through all the days, and finally, the day came. I was so prepared for this and hurried to the gym to audition. When I had reached the gym, I was surprised to see that 12 or 14 girls were lining up and I guessed I was the last one to arrive. Then our audition began. Some of the girls failed to pass the audition and some passed.

There was only 1 slot left to complete the 6 girls to join the volleyball team and suddenly I felt nervous because the person in front of me was going to take her serve (发球). Then the girl hit the ball and then… the ball didn’t pass over the net. The girl slapped her forehead and left, leaving me standing in the middle of the court.

Then the coach spoke, “Okay, you, serve! ” She handed me the ball and I caught it with my hands. As the ball was in my hands, my hands were suddenly sweating and so was I!

I then suddenly became nervous about this. “Maybe I should be back of,” I told myself.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A warm, sunny day in early November, especially in the Sierras, was a nice surprise. One look at the cloudless blue sky was all it took to convince me to drive twenty miles into the valley to do early Christmas shopping.

Temperatures in the valley are between eight and ten degrees higher than those in the foothills where we live, so I enjoyed the warmth and sunshine as I walked from store to store. Around sunset, I searched through my purse for my cellphone, only to discover it wasn’t there. After a frustrating search I finally found it under the car seat and sighed with relief.

I called my husband and heard the panic in his voice. ”I’ve been trying to call you. It started snowing up here half an hour ago, “he shouted into the phone.

“Well. I’ll stop and put the chains on when I get up there so I can make it home,” I sighed. My husband coughed nervously and cleared his throat. “Uh, I forgot to put the chains back in the trunk when I cleaned the car out yesterday,” he said. I resisted the urge to scream. “I think you can make it home if you leave now and drive slowly following the tire tracks in the road when you get to the snow,” my husband said before I hung up.

I drove slowly toward the 2600-foot elevation(高地) where we lived. My biggest challenge would be to get over the bridge, then up the hill on the other side. The snow was falling harder when I reached the bridge. I blinked back tears.

A truck was driving across the bridge ahead of me. My hopes soared. Those big tires would make a good path through the snow. The path from the truck tires helped until I reached the end of the bridge and started up the hill. The tires started spinning and the car started to slide back down the hill.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One spring day, the wind was gentle and the sun was shining brightly. The sky was clear and blue, and the temperature was comfortable. It was a perfect day for a walk outside.

Our teacher Mr. White asked us all to go out of the classroom to enjoy the natural sights and sounds of the natural world. But before Ruby and I were ready to go out to play, Cathy signed to both of us to stop. We were the best sisters, playing together each time.

“Come over, ladies! Guess what I discovered in Mr. White’s locker, with a mysterious smile on her face, Cathy rocked a chalk box with pieces of colorful chalk inside.

“Fabulous! How exciting it would be to write on the blackboard with it!” Ruby exclaimed with curiosity and expectation.

“But we can’t do it without our Mr. White’s permission, “I said timidly.

“Nobody will find it out. If you’re a chicken, you can stand by and just watch. Anyway, Cathy and I would have a try, “said Ruby. She picked out a piece of pink chalk and started to draw a dress.

Not to make them believe I was a chicken, I unwillingly involved myself in the creation of art. Soon I lost myself in the picture drawing though I knew we were breaking the class rule: never touch the teachers’ supplies. A moment later we drew a rainbow, a rabbit and a dinosaur respectively. Then we went on drawing many other objects with our imagination. It was real fun.

Suddenly, I noticed the clock above the blackboard. It pointed to 10: 28, only two minutes to the end of the interval. We must erase all on the blackboard before Mr. White came back. If we were caught, we would be punished by doing the cleaning for the class in the next three days.

In a hurry, I picked up an eraser and started destroying our art pieces. As the chalk was so sticky that it left a heavy sign on the blackboard. I had to rub it carefully.

Steve, 21, was leading a small team into an abandoned(废弃的)mine near Paradise Pines, California. With him were his 19-year-old brother Allen, and a fishing friend, 32-year-old Bobby Erler.

After a couple of hours of exploring, Steve suddenly felt the earth give way under him. The drainage shaft(排水井)! His fingers clawed helplessly at the wet soil as he fell. He was falling into darkness, his body struggling against the walls of the shaft.

20 feet away, Allen heard a loud cry. “I’m climbing down,” he told Bobby.

With his torch(手电筒)under his arm, Allen slid rapidly down the pipe. “I’m coming, Steve!” he yelled several times. No answer.

As Allen slid towards the bottom of the mine shaft, he saw Steve floating face down in the water. He slipped his arms round Steve and patted him on the back. Water came out of Steve’s mouth continuously.

“I’m going to die, right?” Steve said in a weak voice.

“No way,” Allen said. “Bobby’s going for help.”

At 3: 20 pm, Bobby stepped through the door of the local fire station, a mile and a half from the top of the canyon(峡谷).“My friends. Trapped,” he said, out of breath. “Last Chance Mine. You have to hurry!”

One hundred miles away, Bob Trussell’s phone rang at 5 pm. Leader of the Lassen County Search and Rescue Team, Trussell, 44, had the only team in northern California trained to lead mine rescues. “I’ll pull together my team,” he said, “but it’ll take some time to get there.” An hour later, he was leading a line of six trucks towards Paradise Pines.

Suddenly, Steve fell unconscious(不省人事的). Allen wondered how long they could hold on.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.

One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”

Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.

“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.

Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“I’m sorry, but visiting hours are over,” the nurse said apologetically. “You can come back in the morning.”

My husband Eric had just got out of the operating room and was still struggling with being sick from the anesthesia (麻醉). I really wanted to stay with him until he was more comfortable, but I knew that the hospital’s visiting policies must be followed.

“I’ll take care of him before you get back, I promise.” The nurse handed me a piece of paper. “That’s my cell number. You can call or text me anytime tonight if you’re worried or just want an update.”

I thanked her and then turned to Eric. “Can I do anything for you before I leave?” He shook his head slightly without opening his eyes, and I could tell he was uncomfortable. “I can’t believe I have to leave while you’re like this,” I said, tears filling my eyes. “I’m so sorry.”

He patted my hand and signaled to me to leave. “I’ll be right here in the morning.” I said and headed to my car, still fighting tears. In my head, I knew that Eric wasn’t in danger, and he would be physically okay when I returned in the morning, but it still broke my heart that I couldn’t be with him when he needed me.

The hospital was a few hours from our house, so I was spending the night in a hotel. When I got to my room, I texted Eric’s nurse. She texted back, saying he was still sick to his stomach.

I sighed, feeling the worry rush in. What if getting sick caused his stitches (缝线) to break open? How much of the pain medicine was still in his system? What if he was in pain from his incision (切口)?

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Father’s Principle

It was in New Hampshire. Cody was an 11-year-old boy. Just like other boys, he enjoyed running around the lake, and sometimes picked yellow daisies for his mother’s kitchen table along the path. But the thing he liked best was fishing. He went fishing whenever he got a chance from the dock(船坞) at his family’s cabin on an island in the middle of the lake and he was proud of his fishing skills.

On the day before that year’s bass (鲈鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure (诱饵) and practiced casting. The lure struck the water, stirring up colored ripples in the sunset, and then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake. It was an unusually quiet evening. The gentle breeze from the lake was so refreshing. After what seemed like a long time, Cody noticed his fishing pole doubled over, and he knew at once that something huge was on the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully worked the fish alongside the dock.

Finally, he very carefully lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.

The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, gills playing back and forth in the moonlight. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 p.m.—two hours before the season opened. He looked at the bass, then at Cody.

“You’ll have to put the fish back, son,” he said. “Dad!” cried the boy.

“There will be other fish back, son," said the boy’s father gently but firmly. “Not as big as this one,” cried the boy again.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a beautiful day outside. The sky was a pale blue and the clouds were big and fluffy which made me delighted. I decided to take a walk in the park and enjoy the lovely weather. As I was walking, I saw a little girl sitting on a bench, looking sad and lonely. I approached her and asked if she was okay. She looked up at me with big, round eyes filled with tears and shook her head.

I sat down next to her and asked her what was wrong. She said that she had lost her doll and couldn’t find it anywhere. I offered to help her look for it and we searched the park together. We looked in every nook and cranny, behind trees and bushes, but couldn’t find the doll. We all felt frustrated and depressed. Just when we were about to give up, I saw a glimmer of pink behind a park bench. I picked up the doll and handed it to the little girl.

She was so grateful and gave me a big, warm hug. She told me that her doll was very special to her because the gift was given by her best friend who had gone abroad and she missed the best friend very much. She couldn’t thank me enough for helping her find it. As we walked back to her house, the little girl told me that she was new to the area and didn’t have any friends yet. She always felt lonely and sad and didn’t want to go to school. I comforted her and promised to come back and visit her again, and we exchanged phone numbers.
