1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Every day in the evening after I have finished my homework, I will go out for a walk in the small park near my home and play some outdoor games with other children sometimes, but the outdoor activity that I did for the first time was something different and it had a great influence on me.

It was in the middle of last summer holiday, when I noticed that some of the people were gathering in the center of the park and they all had bicycles with them. They were dressed like professional cyclists and were discussing something excitedly. That day I was with one of my neighborhood friends and we went out with our bicycles. My friend and I went closer to the group and heard that they were members of a bicycling group, who did the cycling as part of their outdoor exercise.

After staying with them for a while, we found that they were planning to cycle around the city in 4 hours. The team leader, a friendly man in his fifties, kindly invited us to join them just when we were about to leave. They made us members of their group. Carrying small flags of various colors, we together started the cycling ride around the city, starting from the park and went through the major parts of the whole city. To be honest, cycling for the whole 3 — 4 hours was not an easy task, especially for us teenagers who were still in high school. And yet we enjoyed it and we managed to keep close to the group who gave us courage the whole time.

After a few hours, we came back to the park where we started and I found that I was totally absorbed and tired. As we sat down to catch our breath, the team leader approached us with a warm smile. He praised our determination and will, noting that we had done exceptionally well as first-timers. His encouragement made us feel proud and motivated.

Winston watched rain pour down. He sighed. “This is just typical! School holidays and it rains!” His younger sister, Hannah, didn’t answer and carried on rolling around the floor with Grandma’s dog, Mac. A moment later, the door opened and 16-year-old Sophie, headphones glued as usual to her ears, bounded upstairs.

Mac certainly needed no second chance and was out of the room and into the garden before Hannah could get to her feet. Winston yelled, “We’re supposed to keep him in. He doesn’t know his way around this end of town.” Grabbing two coats, Hannah joined her brother on the step, just in time to see the black and white dog walked slowly up the road. “No time to leave a note to Mom,” Winston decided, taking charge. “Let’s get him. The last thing Grandma needs to know when she’s in hospital is that we’ve lost her dog,” he added.

The two children rushed toward Mac. Wagging (摆动) his tail energetically, he raced off toward the park. Mac led them toward the gateway to the town park and set off at once toward the duck pond. Winston and Hannah were close behind but cannoned (猛撞) round the corner straight into a woman pushing a baby carriage. “Watch where you are going,” she yelled. “Sorry,” they said. “I can’t see Mac any more,” Winston announced when the woman had gone on her way.

A few minutes of racing along the paths in the park finally convinced the children that they had lost Mac. “We’re never going to find him by ourselves,” Hannah said. “A bus! Come on! Let’s go home and phone Mom,” Winston shouted. Before Hannah could argue, he had pulled his sister onto the bus and paid their fares.

Later, Hannah did try to tell him that the bus was going the wrong way but by then it was too much late. They both realized they were going east instead of west. Hannah burst into tears. She cried, “I’m cold. I’m scared because we’ll be in real trouble now. We’ve lost Mac!”

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。

As Papá fell sound asleep, Catalina slid from her bed and felt her way to the front door. The girl waited a moment to see if any of her family would wake, but nobody stirred. She tiptoed upstairs to her “Observatory”, longing for drinking in deep lungfuls of the clear night air under the bright stars.

She polished her dear telescope, which was presented by her grandpa, the only one to support her dream. She assembled (组装) it, disassembled it and reassembled it repeatedly, knowing its parts very well.

Through it she could explore the unknown galaxy, the Milky Way stretching across the deep blue sky. Night was always her favorite time. When everything was quiet, she was lost in her starry night. At this moment, she seemed to forget her cares and sorrows in the daytime.

She told her secret dream to these beloved ones, her friends, teachers and even her father. When she said, “Papá, I want to be an astronomer working in the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory someday,” her father replied, “Maybe if you work hard, you’ll be hired to clean the offices.” No one believed she would be a scientist one day. But why? She knew she could be a good scientist. She knew it!

A big day was coming—to visit the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, where she had visited for dozens of times, familiar with every set of the instruments there. This time with her classmates she was still eager for something stimulating.

She took a cautious step forward, holding her breath, and her eyes getting closer to the lens (镜片) of the telescope. She adjusted the device softly and carefully, hoping to find more.... “Bang! …” suddenly there came a loud noise. One of her old friends “one-meter” telescope fell down, broken.

“Look out! Stop touching anything! Step backward!” The manager yelled.

“One-meter is broken, but the scientist has the day off. Nobody can fix it.” An operator added. Worries blanketed the hall.

“I CAN FIX IT!” Catalina’s voice was surprisingly calm.

“You what...?” The manager uttered, confused, and doubted.

“It has 67 parts in total. An adjustable spanner (扳手) and a star screwdriver (螺丝刀) can help.”

“Then you know how to assemble it.” His eyes wide open, he still half believed.

Confidently, she nodded.

If there was one thing more than another that Brenda wanted for her birthday, it was a pair of skates. How she hoped her parents would give her a pair!

In vain (徒劳) her mother explained that Brenda might not learn to use them as easily as other children, and that she might fall many times and perhaps hurt herself before she could skate properly. Brenda wanted skates and that was that. She thought about skates all day and dreamed about skates all night. She pictured herself skating to school and home, skating to the stores for Mother, and skating all over the yard.

Her birthday came at last, and with it the precious package which she had been eager for. Before she opened it, she guessed there were skates inside. And there were — beautiful new shiny skates. Just her size, too. Brenda was on cloud nine. She felt she had never been so happy in all her life.

And now it was time to practice with them. Hardly was breakfast over when she was out on the smooth concrete(水泥地).“At last,”she thought,“I am going to skate! Hooray!”

Excitedly she put on her precious pairs of skates and eagerly she stood up. But only for a moment. Suddenly, to her great surprise, away went both her feet from under her. Down she went. Brenda stood up again. But hardly had she put one foot forward, when the other started running backward, and down she went again. This really hurt, and Brenda felt very much like crying. Slowly she got up once more despite the pain and started to walk with great care. But before she knew what was going on, she was sitting on the concrete again. She felt very sad, tears filling her eyes. All her hopes of skating to school and town like the other girls disappeared. She began to wish she had never asked for skates for her birthday. She cried, taking off the skates from her feet and throwing them inside the back door.

In high school, many students may encounter difficulties in their studies, and so did I. Sometimes, I would become very confused. Math problems that seemed to be impossible to solve, puzzling grammar in English, and difficult historical events all made me feel at a loss. I didn’t know where to start or how to improve.

Moreover, the fierce competition among classmates also added to my anxiety. Seeing others doing well, I couldn’t help but question myself, wondering if I was working hard enough. This sense of uncertainty made me doubt my abilities and future. I was losing patience and drive.

One sunny day, as I was sitting in the classroom feeling a bit bored, my teacher came in and announced that we would have a special project — to plant a tree in the schoolyard. I was excited at the thought of getting outside and doing something different.

I went outside and started digging the hole for the tree. I worked hard, feeling the dirt on my hands and the sweat on my forehead. As I was working, a classmate, Mary, came over and said, “Hey, you’re really putting a lot of effort into this!” I smiled and replied, “Yeah, I want this tree to grow strong. It feels like we’re doing something meaningful.” Mary nodded in agreement, “Definitely. And it’s amazing to think about how we’re all part of this process of growth.”

As the weeks passed, I would visit the tree often, observing the little tree as it faced many challenges, including harsh weather and strong winds. But each time, it overcame them and continued to grow taller and stronger, providing shade and shelter for us. Its journey in the wind and rain was a test of its perseverance (坚持) and growth. It made me wonder whether I could be like the tree, growing and changing.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On my twelfth birthday, I desired a shining new bicycle. However, considering our family’s financial struggle, I realized that such a bike was merely an impossible dream. Then, I decided to choose a nightstand (床头柜). It seemed like a sensible choice, as it would provide me with a safe space to store my personal things. Therefore, I requested my parents for a nightstand equipped with lockable drawers.

We visited the second-hand furniture store and chanced upon an old nightstand in a dark brown color. Although its appearance wasn’t attractive, it had drawers that could be locked. I decided to repaint it in order to make it look better.

After bringing it home, I prepared to paint the nightstand. However, as I pulled out the drawers, I found something stuck to the back of the bottom drawer. Curious and eager, I reached deep into the back and was surprised to discover a bag.

Upon opening the bag, I discovered several official-looking papers within, under which there was a wad (沓) of dollar bills! Imagine my surprise when I found such a treasure, especially on my birthday! Eagerly, I read the papers, which turned out a will. A certain elderly woman was leaving her savings to her son and grandchildren. It must have been that after her passing no one knew of the money. Her family donated the nightstand to a second-hand furniture store, and now it has found its way into my hand.

I counted the money and found it totaled over 1,000 dollars. My heart was racing with excitement. With such a large amount, I could buy the coolest bicycle. I even had enough to buy bicycles for my younger brothers. Perhaps I could even surprise my parents with a car. What a dilemma! Should I keep the money and use it to buy all kinds of things for myself and my family? Or should I return it all? “Somebody helps me with this!” I begged. But I knew I didn’t truly need anyone to give me the answer. I had a clear sense of right and wrong. I decided not to fail this test. It was a test of my virtue.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and began to cry out, “Buddy, I can’t believe it. What a wonderful poem!” My eyes twinkled when she poured out her praise. “What time will Dad be home?” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him, expecting the praise from an editor of Times.

I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for his arrival. First, I wrote the poem out to the best of my ability. Then I drew pictures to match this greatest poem. As seven o’clock drew near, I confidently placed it on my father’s plate on the dining room table, waiting for him to appreciate this wonderful poem of mine.

That evening when my father burst in, his mood seemed even more thunderous than usual. An hour late for dinner, he did not sit down but circled the long dining room table with a drink in his hand, complaining non-stop about his employees. Under my steady stare, he paused and glared at his plate. There was an awful silence. “What’s this?” He reached for the paper and read it. Then he dropped the poem back on the table, saying, “Awful!” My eyes were getting wet.

“Ben, Buddy is just a little boy. These are the first lines of poetry he’s ever produced. He needs encouragement,” my mother said. But my father disagreed, “Isn’t there enough terrible poetry in the world already? No law says Buddy has to become a poet.” They quarreled over it. I couldn’t stand it another second. I ran from the dining room, crying. A sad story, but you know, the family wounds healed (痊愈). My mother began talking to my father again. I even began writing poems again, though I seldom exposed them to my father.

On a sunny early spring morning, Anna, together with her grandchildren Julie, Fred and Erik, was playing happily in the backyard. While playing, Anna said to the kids, “I am going to plant something in the garden. Who would like to help me?”

“What are you going to plant, Grandma?” asked Julie. “I like pleasant, bright-colored roses.”

“But I like lively, big, yellow sunflowers!” said Fred.

“Well, I’m going to plant some vegetables so that we can have fresh vegetables to eat when they are ready,” said Anna.

“How long does that take?” asked Erik. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially tomatoes.

“It will take several months before anything is ready to eat,” answered Anna. The kids were surprised.

“Several months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?” asked Julie. “Why not just go to the store and buy them?”

“Patience, my sweeties! Don’t you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself?” replied Anna. “And if all of you come to help, it won’t be too much work.”

“I’ll help you, Grandma,” offered Erik. He put down the basketball and went to look at the gardening tools Anna had laid out. “What should we do first?” Fred and Julie came over to have a look, too.

Firstly, Anna taught Erik how to use a travel (小铲子) to dig rows of small holes for the seeds. Next, she showed Julie how to pour the seeds into each hole carefully. And then it was Fred’s job to cover up the holes with soil little by little. Finally, Julie wrote the vegetable names on sticks that Erik pushed into the ground. “This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we have planted,” said Anna.

After planting everything, the kids took turns in filling up the watering pot so that Anna could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow.

“From now on, we just water them a little each day, and with some time and sunshine, we’ll have some delicious things to eat in the summer,” said Anna.
