1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In Texas, a concerned father named Bradley learned that his 17-year-old son, Brad, was causing trouble at school. It wasn’t just a one-time occurrence; Brad’s physics teacher had complained multiple times about his constant talking during class. As a result, Bradley was faced with the challenge of finding an effective way to discipline his son and teach him a valuable lesson.

In a moment of inspiration, Bradley came up with an idea that parents around the world would later praise him for. He decided to teach his son a lesson. He declared, “If we receive another call from your physics teacher, I will go to your school and sit beside you in class.”

However, Brad didn’t take his father’s words seriously and continued his loose conduct in his physics class. And his father received another call from the teacher, and now it was time for the father to keep his promise.

Friday arrived, and Bradley, who normally had this day off from work, was awakened by his wife. He reluctantly got ready to go to his son’s school. Upon arriving at the school, he made his way to Brad’s physics classroom. The other students chatted joyfully, unaware of what was about to happen. Bra d entered the room as usual, and to his shock, he saw his father sitting by his desk. It hit him like a ton of bricks. His dad had actually come to school and was sitting right next to him in class. The once happy-go-lucky teenager was now filled with embarrassment and regret.

Throughout the class, Bradley silently observed his son’s behavior. He witnessed first-hand the disruptive comments and constant talking that had been causing so much trouble. It was clear that Brad was not taking his education seriously, and his father realized that something needed to be changed.

注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Last year, 28-year-old Jane Bell moved to a suburb of Philadelphia for her newly found job and rent a house with a big yard in a village.

Jane had the habit of rising early for exercise. One cold morning, she was jogging through the nearby park when she spotted a weak husky lying by the path, seeming to have been deserted. She approached and checked it, only to find one of the dog’s legs severely broken. The pitiful dog looked at her with its sad blue eyes as if asking her for help. Blaming the dog’s previous owner for the selfish and irresponsible action, Jane, without hesitation, bent down and carried the dog home. Then she drove the dog to an animal clinic for a checkup and treatment, where a doctor told Jane it would take about 3 months before the dog got well.

Jane returned home with the dog, which she called Kobe. She made a comfortable den (窝) in the front yard and took great trouble to look after it. With time going on, Kobe gradually recovered and was able to get around with her. Every morning, Jane would take Kobe for a run. Every evening Jane came home from work, Kobe would welcome her, excitedly wagging (摇) its tail at her. Kobe kept Jane company and became her inseparable and loyal friend.

Jane’s furry companion was usually gentle and quiet. But one dawn Jane was woken up by Kobe’s loud barking and the constant noise of its pawing (用爪子抓) at the door. The moment she opened the door, Kobe pulled on her clothes with its mouth, attempting to lead her away from the yard. Initially dismissing it as typical dog behavior, Jane patted Kobe on the head to quiet it, saying firmly, “No, Kobe! Good boy, ca lm down!” However, the dog didn’t stop behaving strangely. It arched its back, its nose moving against a piece of ground in the yard anxiously. Jane was surprised and confused.

Snowed In

Waiting and praying were a daily routine for Barbara Schmitt, but today the prayers were more intense. Her three-year-old granddaughter, Michelle, had been showing danger signs that made an immediate liver transplant critical, but the telephone was as silent as the snowy scene outside.

Then at nine in the morning, the phone rang. A hospital in Omaha had located the right liver donor, they were sure it was a match for Michelle, and they needed her there within 12 hours. Barbara couldn’t tell what to do first — rejoice or despair, as they were snowbound (被雪困住的), 600 miles away. “We’re snowed in,” Barbara told the medical coordinator on the line, “and the airport is 17 miles away and there’s no way we’re going to get there.” “Don’t give up,” the woman told Barbara. “You have 12 hours to reach Omaha!”

Fortunately, the phone lines were still working, so she started calling Sharon Stevens, who runs Hair Angels, a fund for children with special needs. Sharon had already lined up a Lear jet (医疗飞机) and two pilots to fly the Schmitts to Omaha when transplant time came. How to get from the Schmitts’ house to the jet was the big question.

Sharon called for help through the local radio station, wanting to invite listeners to call in with ideas and suggestions. Teresa Amshoff heard the story and suggested that the church parking lot next to her house, only a mile from the Schmitts, would make a perfect helicopter landing pad. As precious minutes ticked away, the Amshoffs rushed from door to door, begging for help to clear the lot. Neighbors came without hesitation.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was time for the ice cream event that my small youth group had waited for many months. The group consisted of five boys; one of them was Scott.

Scott always had a positive attitude. He looked on the bright side of things and never criticized anyone. But Scott was different from the rest of us because he was disabled, suffering from a disease which caused hands shaking constantly. Therefore, he was unable to participate in activities in most cases. No one ever made fun of him to his face, but at times, people would laugh or stare in his presence. But Scott never worried; he just kept his head up high and ignored them.

Finally, the night of the ice cream event descended. My friends and I rushed to the church basement and waited with scoops (冰淇淋勺) in hand for the guests to arrive. One by one, people filed in, all hoping to get a creamy and tasty scoop of ice cream. But what they ended up getting was a hard and frozen mass. We waited for a while for the ice cream to melt, and eventually it did.

Once the ice cream melted, we had another problem. It had turned into three pools of coconut, chocolate, and strawberry. But we persisted in serving it. We had our chance to serve, except for Scott. So, being as kind as possible, I gave Scott a chance to scoop and serve. As soon as Scott gripped the scoop, our ice cream troubles grew beyond control. Milky ice cream was flung in every direction and made a mess on people, but there was no sign for him to come to a stop on account of his terrible control of trembling hands. At that moment, a stir of unrest and dissatisfaction rippled through the crowd.

One of my favourite things about spring is the arrival of different species of birds. My grandfather was a bird lover, and I picked up the birdwatching hobby at a young age, thanks to his influence. My husband John and I found it a relaxing way to enjoy nature; we like birdwatching when we go camping or hiking. Plus, I have a great love of nature photography, so when we sit out in the backyard of our home, I always have my digital camera with me. John is an artist, and he often paints the birds I photograph.

Usually when the yellow warblers (莺) come back from the south in springtime, they pass us by; we don’t typically see them hanging around our home. But not on this particular sunny day in spring. As soon as I finished my workday, I put on a light jacket and went out to the backyard to relax in my favourite way: by watching the birds.

While taking some pictures of cardinals (红衣凤头鸟) and chickadees (北美山雀) at one of our feeders, I looked up and noticed this yellow warbler in our maple tree. The tree had recently begun to bud, and the bird’s yellow feathers looked striking against the yellow blooms, so I took this photo. Our backyard has a variety of trees and between my husband and me, we’ve documented almost 40 different species of birds. I’ve photographed most of them, but some can be a bit camera shy so I also keep a written list of what we see. Our more common visitors are cardinals, chickadees, hummingbirds and various sparrows.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a warm Sunday. 16-year-old Stella settled down with a book, enjoying her quiet moment when her friend Bog came over with his 6-year-old sister. “Stella, please! I need you to help to watch Hazel! I have a lecture to attend this afternoon,” Bog begged.

Stella frowned, not thrilled with the idea of babysitting a little girl. However, Bog didn’t offer her any other choice. He dropped Hazel off with Stella and quickly ran away before she could react.

With a heavy sigh, Stella unwillingly turned her attention to Hazel. “Fine, just stay there and don’t cause any trouble,” she grumbled (嘟囔). To her surprise, little Hazel smiled and obediently sat by the table, drawing quietly without making a single noise.

For the next hour, Stella was quietly engaged in reading without being disturbed by Hazel. Gradually, her annoyance disappeared and she got accustomed to the company of Hazel. After a while, Hazel cautiously approached Stella, holding a picture. “Look, it’s you and me,” she said in a low voice. It was a simple drawing of two girls, hand in hand, smiling.

Stella’s heart softened as she looked at the drawing. She felt guilty about treating Hazel impatiently. Setting her book aside, Stella smiled warmly and said, “I love it. Thank you!” Then Stella began to join Hazel to create it together.

Just as they were lost in a world of colors, a sudden phone ringing broke the warm atmosphere. It was a phone call from her friend, reminding her about the long-awaited plan to go skating on the ice rink (溜冰场). Stella’s heart sank because she had forgotten all about it. She was torn between the desire to go skating and her duty to look after Hazel. She was also worried that taking her to skate would prevent her from enjoying gliding (滑) freely on the ice.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Two years ago, we’d traded our old life in Sydney to sail around the world. Life on the water was extremely happy: we were finally free of the 9-to-5 grind and our two children enjoyed getting to see the world while being home-schooled. But one day, looking at the kittens on the dock at a port in Greece, the kids asked, ”Can we please have a pet?" Guy and I were hesitant at first, but after some thought it made sense that living on a boat would be the best time to welcome an animal into our lives -we would be with it 24/7 and could give it plenty of attention. We decided a dog would be better-suited to sea life.

After doing some research about what it would take to bring a dog back home to Australia as we sailed back, I decided a dachshund (腊肠狗) would make the ideal pet. They were low to the ground, easy to transport, good boat security and loving, intelligent dogs. Guy hadn’t had a little dog before and doubted a little. But my cute photos eventually worked their magic and we headed to a town in Sicily to meet a breeder who had some miniature dachshunds. And the minute we laid eyes on the brown pup, we knew she was the one for us. We called her Pipsqueak-or Pip for short-and welcomed her onto the boat.

The first few days with Pip saw us encounter some rough weather, but she took it all in her stride (从容应对). The kids fell in love with her instantly. Pip was never far from our side, even accompanying us to museums and galleries. Our sails saw us cross the Atlantic Ocean to the United States, and then we decided to sail home to Australia. But when COVID-19 hit, it became complicated: we had to get on a flight quickly as borders around the world were closing fast. Problem was, we couldn’t take Pip. After much discussion, Guy and I decided that we would have to leave her with a friend while we flew home. Handing our dog over was utterly heartbreaking. It’ll only be for a couple of weeks, I told myself.

Dmitry Bondarenko was a Toronto-based artist. One day he had an appointment with a friend for a painting session. So he put the objects including his sketchbook (速写本) in the back basket of his bike and then cycled to meet his friend. But when he arrived and turned to take his things, he was shocked to find his sketchbook was missing.

The 5×7 black sketchbook contained a decade of his works and had great emotional value to him. It included portraits of friends and family, and still life paintings of his great grandfather when he served in Red Army in Russia. The notebook became a visual account of the 40-year-old artist’s life and family history. His parents are Russian and Ukrainian, and he and his family moved to Canada when he was a child.

Dmitry shared that he felt a deep sense of loss when he first discovered his sketchbook missing. He thought that the book must have fallen out of his bicycle’s back basket. So he went back to look for it. First, he retraced his steps and posted dozens of flyers along the bike path through the park. He also checked with park services. Several days later, he still had no clue where his precious sketchbook was, making him extremely sad and anxious.

“I realized the weight of it when it was gone, how precious it is,” Bondarenko said sadly.

In a last-ditch effort to locate his treasured sketchbook, he decided to turn to social media. He shared a post to a neighborhood Facebook group, detailing his trouble. A few other community-oriented Facebook groups reshared the post. Word quickly spread within the local community for everyone to keep an eye out for the missing sketchbook.

In the meanwhile, a man named Chris found the sketchbook in the park. As he picked it up and skimmed through the pages, he found there was no name or address. The paintings in the book were so impressive that he couldn’t take his eyes off. Finally, he decided to leave the sketchbook where it was found, thinking the owner would return to look for it. He leafed through the sketchbook again before putting it down.

Like the Christmas before, we didn’t send Christmas cards; we called my family in Canada. Ginny and I talked to my mom. We spoke to my uncles and aunts. I hadn’t seen any of them in seven years and Ginny hadn’t met them yet, but she hoped to one day.

Those calls were completed, but I couldn’t relax. I still had one more call to make, and I was afraid. I paced up and down inside the room. I wasted time at my computer. I needed to call but I couldn’t.

Five years ago, I received an e-mail from my brother. At that time, I had been out of work for several months. My life was very stressful. My brother’s e-mail was nothing terrible but it made me angry.

I wrote back. As I typed, my anger grew. Months of frustration (沮丧) flowed into my unkind response. I said things that were not nice, but I sent the e-mail without hesitation. More thoughts occurred to me. I wrote a second e-mail.

I screamed abuse at my brother in the emails. I didn’t care if I ever heard from him again.

The next day I received another e-mail from him. I didn’t read it. I just deleted it, and then I blocked his e-mail address.

For five years, he tried to get through to me but I ignored him. I had lived with this terrible guilt. I thought about contacting him, but was ashamed of myself for what I’d said.

It was time to fix it. I picked up the phone and stepped outside. I wanted privacy. Ginny didn’t know I was calling my brother. I took a deep breath, blew out a cloud of my breath into the cold December air, and dialed (拨号) his number. Even after five years, I still knew it by heart. A phone rang 3,700 miles away in Nova Scotia.
