1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Those walks were more than just physical exercise. They were a journey into my grandfather’s wisdom. He’d wove tales of his colorful youth, painting vivid pictures of adventures and lessons learned. His advice was like a compass guiding me through life’s maze (迷宫), highlighting the importance of being kind and understanding in a world that often appeared uncaring. I often looked forward to those walks with eager anticipation.

Our bond grew stronger within the simple embrace of routine. The weathered bench beneath the oak tree became our safe place, a harbor of shared moments. Grandpa, with his worn yet cherished lunchbox, would unpack a simple feast comprising a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and a bottle of tea.

In those instances, it felt like time stopped, allowing laughter to dance in the air and silent understanding to say so much. Our connection didn’t rely on fancy things; it grew strong in the simple way we were friends.

The unavoidable leaving came, making me feel a huge sense of loss. Grandpa’s passing away left a big emptiness, a silence that couldn’t be filled. In the sadness, I felt upset that the family focused more on getting things from him rather than remembering the values and memories he gave us. It was like they forgot how he held us together, beyond just what he owned.

Looking for comfort, I went back to the park that held the pieces of our shared happiness. Away from the mourning crowd, the bench beneath the oak tree stood as a silent witness to our past moments. As I approached, my heart ached with the realization that those cherished moments were now memories. But something caught my eye-a small box and a letter, both addressed to me.

After my son, Scott, graduated from high school, he took a job in North Carolina. Two thousand miles suddenly separated me from the person who’d been the focus of my life for 18 years. As the days went by, I missed Scott more and more.I’d always been able to take care of myself, but now I seemed to need Scott’s help constantly, like getting a tool from the top shelf, or moving something heavy. Most of all, I just missed having him to talk to.I was lonely.I knew this day would come. But why does it have to be so hard?

However, a mother spider(蜘蛛) taught me a lesson.

On my way out from my storeroom, I noticed a spider building her web across the top corner of the doorway.I reached for a hoe (锄头), tore down the web, and watched the giant spider run away in the grass. She was back the very next morning, in the exact same spot, busily rebuilding.I stared for a moment, and then reached for the hoe again. Then I twisted the hoe round and round, catching the spider in her own web.I carried her far into my backyard, shook the hoe and watched her fall to the ground and disappear in the bush. The third morning, I stopped short as I entered the storeroom. The spider was back in the same corner, her web almost completed again.I reached for the hoe, but stopped.I thought her persistence (坚持) in building her web should pay off.I stepped back and watched her long legs busily knitting the web.

For the next few weeks, the spider and I were close neighbors. One particularly boring day, I was feeling so down that I didn’t even glance up at my spider as I entered.Suddenly I found a hundred tiny creatures on the floor.I realized that these were baby spiders and the web the mother had built was to protect her young.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.

My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.

I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills. Birds were singing on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested and springy. Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine run.

Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me? I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.

So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.

Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.

Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.

As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully.

“Bye, Mom! Don’t forget to make my pie!” shouted 12-year-old Jake after kissing his mother, Susan, goodbye.

He was anxiously waiting for the bus. Moments later, the bus pulled over, and Jake hopped in, assuming it was just going to be an ordinary ride to school. “Luckily, Mom gave me $6. Otherwise I’d have to walk all the way to school,” he thought.

The bus came to a stop, picking up Christel, a 56-year-old woman from the next stop. She was smelly and looked dirty. Some passengers frowned at her, but she was least bothered about them. Moments later, she trembled through the crowd toward an empty seat next to Jake.

“Ticket, please?!” the conductor said loudly, staring at her. Christel’s face slowly started to go red. “One second, I’m looking for my purse,” she replied. “I...uh...I don’t have money. I forgot to bring my purse,” Christel stammered (结结巴巴地说), embarrassed.

“Lady, this is not a charity ride that picks up beggars for free. I’m stopping the bus right now. Get out!” yelled the conductor as the crowd of passengers turned toward Christel all at once.

Jake witnessed everything and was disappointed at how the conductor treated the poor woman. Then he remembered he still had some change. “Here is your $3...Give her a ticket,” he said to the conductor, throwing the money into his hand.

“Thank you, sweetheart. I am forever grateful to you! What is your name, dear?” said Christel.

“I’m Jake. That’s okay. I just did what I should do,” replied Jake, taking Christel’s words of gratitude casually.

They talked about Jake’s school life. “I want to become a baseball player, but my school does not have such facilities. I don’t want to trouble my mom. She’s already working hard in the restaurant. My father passed away in an accident two years ago,” revealed Jake.

“Alright, Grandma! We’ve arrived at my school. I’ll leave now. Bye-bye!”

Christel was touched by Jake’s warm heart. She stared a second time at his school, watching him disappear inside the gate.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Do you do flexibility training as part of your daily workout? Do you do any stretching exercises on a regular basis? If you are trying to lose weight, you should. Flexibility exercises are not big calorie burners, but they play an important role in a weight loss program.

The best thing about flexibility training is that you don't have to do it very often to enjoy the benefits. Just a few minutes of stretching each day will help to improve the range of motion in your joints, decrease the risk of injury during exercise and reduce stress.

So what flexibility exercises should you do? You can do simple stretches when you get out of bed each morning. This will help to loosen up your joints and start your day with healthy movement. There are also some great stretches that you can do at your desk while you are at work. You can also take a yoga class to lose weight or learn the practice of t'ai chi to improve your health.

Even though you won't burn many calories during a short stretching session, your body functions better when your joints move more comfortably. This can boost your weight loss program in several different ways.

Flexibility exercises help to get your blood pumping, but not in a way that increases your adrenalin(肾上腺素). Stretching and breathing exercises help to improve your mood and lower your stress level. This may be especially helpful for dieters who are trying to curb emotional eating. If you can replace the trip to the refrigerator with 5 minutes of healthy stretching, you're likely to eat less and slim down faster.

Aerobic(有氧的)activity and strength training for weight loss are more effective when you perform each exercise fully. Stretching helps keep your body in top shape so that you burn more calories during your workouts and you spend less time recovering from injuries or soreness.

Flexibility training alone won't burn enough calories to make a big difference in your daily energy balance. But when you pair stretching exercises with a complete workout program, you'll benefit from a healthier body and improve your chances of weight loss.

Jane, a lovely girl, had a very sweet family. Although the second oldest, Jane had the least self - control, and had hard times trying to control her bad temper, which was continually getting her into trouble. Poor Jane tried desperately to be better, but her inner enemy was always ready to flame up and defeat her, and her mother was always the first to come to her rescue.

Jane had just finished the draft of her first book, which was regarded as a pride of the whole family, expecting it was good enough to print. To celebrate this big event, Jane and the other two sisters planned to go to the theatre to see The Seven Castles. They didn't want to take Amy, the youngest, with them. Seeing that they were leaving, Amy begged them not to leave her alone and even offered to buy her own ticket herself, but in vain. “You can't sit with us, for our seats are reserved, and you mustn't sit alone, and that will spoil our pleasure,” scolded Jane, crosser than ever. Sitting on the floor, Amy began to cry.

The girls hurried down, leaving their sister crying. Amy forgot her grown - up ways, and acted like a spoilt child. She called over the banisters (扶手), in a threatening tone, “You'll be sorry for this, Jane March; see if you aren't.” “You dare!?” said Jane, slamming the door.

They had a happy time, for The Seven Castles was as brilliant and wonderful as heart could wish. But, in spite of the gorgeous princes and princesses, Jane's pleasure had a drop of bitterness in it. The fairy queen's yellow hair reminded her of Amy with wondering what her sister would do to make her “Sorry for it.”

When they got home, Jane found Amy reading in the sitting room. Jane assumed an injured air as they came in but everything was in its place. Jane decided that Amy had forgiven and forgotten her wrongs.

Jane was mistaken, for the next day she found her book missing.

The old man turned away sadly with his eyes filled with tears. Poor Mr. Dev! Indra thought sympathetically. Another day went past and there was still no sign of his family. Indra wondered how children could be so heartless as to abandon a parent like this.

Indra recalled the day when the old man was admitted to her ward (病房). He was thin and delicate. He could not produce his identity card but he could remember the number. The hospital tried to contact his family using the phone number he gave them but it was in vain. He was treated for a lung infection and was now recovering. Soon, it would be time for him to be discharged (出院). Where would he go then? He did not look strong enough to look after himself. Indra threw down the file she was holding as anger rose within her.

“What’s the matter?” asked Poh, Indra’s colleague.

“I’m just upset about old Mr. Dev,” she replied. Poh nodded with understanding. She had been a nurse much longer than Indra. She had seen many cases of abandoned old people and she had learned to control her feelings.

“Don’t worry too much. The hospital will contact the welfare department. Mr. Dev will be placed in an old folks’ home,” Poh said and patted Indra’s arm comfortingly.

Indra sighed. “I know. It’s just that the old man really longs for his family to visit him. He cleans and tidies himself every morning and sits up to wait expectantly. You can see the eagerness in his eyes whenever the door opens. At the end of the day, he goes to sleep with tears in his eyes. You can feel the disappointment as he does. It makes me cry inside. I just could not bear it.”

Poh shook her head sadly, “He needs a miracle (奇迹).”

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Out of a 13-year-old girl’s summer boredom, I put up a tent in our yard and intended to sleep in it. It was midnight and my dad had been asleep upstairs. A girl knocked on the front door, asking if she could use our phone to call her parents.

I watched her struggle to dial the numbers. After she dialed the wrong numbers several times, I offered to do that for her. But after I dialed several times, there still no people answered the phone. Looking at the girl, I said, “Want to sleep in my tent?” She hesitated for a while and agreed.

I accompanied her into the darkness of the yard, entered the tent, and turned my lantern on. She told me how she got here. She and her parents had a nice dinner. After dinner, she expressed she wanted a beautiful dress in a special style, but it was too expressive for her parents. They argued fiercely(激烈地)and she left in anger. She wandered alone aimlessly(漫无目的地)until she found herself on an unfamiliar road. Her cellphone was in her parent’s bag and she seemed to have got lost. She wiped her eyes with my pillow, looked at me sadly, and then said, “Why didn’t my parents buy that dress for me?”

I knew just nodding obviously couldn’t solve the problem. “Do you think your parents love you?” I asked. Hearing my questions, she nodded and said regretfully, “My parents always meet my request as far as possible. This is my fault to ask them to buy that dress which they can’t afford. ” At the time, my phone rang. It turned out her parents’ call. Her parents sounded very worried and said they would come very soon. Then, my dad walked down the stairs.
