I always love going to school as I can meet my friends and learn from my teachers. Everyone has an unforgettable moment in their school life and mine was in junior middle school.

That day started as usual. I woke up, got ready and went to school, where I first met my friends and then we were required to gather for the daily get-together. After that, we went to our respective classes. I went to my classroom as well and settled down as usual, greeting my classmates and waiting for the teacher to arrive.

It was a chemistry class and the teacher asked us to go to the laboratory to conduct a long-anticipated experiment. I took my stuff and was ready to leave the classroom when I felt sharp pain in my stomach. I sat down for a while, with hands rubbing my stomach. I was waiting for the pain to go off by itself. However, it was in vain. The pain still remained. Unfortunately, all of my friends had gone except the class monitor, the one I had never thought to make friends with.

But anyway, I called him and informed him of my condition, asking him to help me contact my parents. Noticing my trembling voice and begging eyesight, he agreed instantly and went to contact my parents without any hesitation.

On his departure, I realized that things were getting worse. Beads of sweat dropping off my paleface, I had to lean against the desk to ease the severe pain without realizing I suddenly vomited (呕吐). Everything around me was in a total mess, including myself. At that point, I thought my life was over and was scared of all the mean words to be said by my classmates and schoolmates. At that embarrassing moment, the class monitor came back. Obviously, he knew my dilemma. I was frozen with pain on the spot, maybe awkwardness, to be accurate.

However, he considerately helped me to go to the toilet.

After fully recovering from the food poisoning, I returned to school.

Brandon, a father of two and an ordinary worker in a company, was making his way home on a typical Thursday evening. The sun had just dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the sky. Brandon’s heart was filled with joy and excitement as he was eager to share the news of his recent promotion with his beloved wife and children. Little did he know that this particular Thursday would be anything but ordinary. All of a sudden, there was a faint ominous (不祥的) feeling around him, but he pushed aside any thoughts of potential danger, focusing instead on getting home. However, just as he arrived there, a thunderous noise shattered the peaceful silence of the evening. He looked up just in time to see a train running into a truck, sending debris flying in all directions.

It was an accident that he had never witnessed before. Brandon was frozen in shock. It was a messy scene as people ran from the dangerous site, hidden behind flames and thick smoke. In an instant, everything around him seemed to be in chaos. People were screaming and cracks filled the air with the explosive force. “Get away from that train! Don’t go near it!” warned the train conductor, as he called 911 for help. Brandon was about to run away when he heard a cry for help. Brandon’s instincts kicked in. Without a second thought, he raced towards the voice, pushing through the panicked crowd. His heart pounded in the chest as he approached the crash site. As he came closer, the cries for help became clearer. They were coming from the burning truck stuck on the train tracks. He ran up to the window and saw the young driver trapped in his seatbelt and held down by the steering wheel as the fire closed in around him.

Brandon’s mind was racing when he saw the situation.

The train conductor came to Brandon and hugged him tightly.

As the nurse had instructed, Amy walked up and down the halls of Mercy Hospital again and again. As she walked past room after room filled with husbands and wives, laughter and encouragement, she was only reminded of how alone she was.

She couldn’t help but notice the bright bouquets (花束) in so many of the rooms. One woman had at least fifty roses beside her bed. How strongly Amy wished to also receive flowers!

Months before, her husband and parents had lost their lives in an accident. She only had grandparents, but they were old and weren’t able to go to the hospital with her. So, when she would soon give birth, she came to the hospital by herself. She had never felt so lonely. She wanted to have her hand held by someone to feel supported and loved.

As she continued walking, she passed a room filled with people. Curiously, Amy stuck her head in to see what was going on.

The new mother Laura on the bed inside saw Amy. Although she didn’t know what happened to Amy, she noticed how sad Amy looked. And she wanted to cheer her up. “Hi! It looks like you’re getting ready to have a baby!’ said Laura holding a beautiful baby girl. “Let’s hope so,” Amy said, trying to sound cheerful.

“I’m Laura. Would you like to hold her?” the mother asked. Amy was so touched by her kindness and nodded. Getting to her was the hard part. Laura had more flowers in her room than Amy had seen all day.

As Amy held the baby, she smiled. “Are you having a boy or girl?” Laura asked “I don’t know. I’ll find it out tonight,” Amy said. “Good luck. You will be a great mom,” Laura said. When Amy left, Laura learned she was alone and then whispered to the nurses, “Give all of these flowers to her. Don’t let her know they are from me.”

Hours later, Amy lay in her own bed, alone, waiting to be delivered of a child. She was so scared. As tears fell down her face, she heard a knock at her door.

A nurse came in with five beautiful flowers.

One morning, John Evans entered my life. He was a newcomer, whose parents had recently arrived in our town for seasonal apple picking. In worn-out clothes, he stood in front of our class, shifting from foot to foot. As our teacher, Mrs. Parmele, penned his name in the roll book, whispers of disapproval began floating from row to row.

Mrs. Parmele looked up at us and the whispering stopped. “Class, this is John Evans,” Mrs. Parmele announced, trying to sound friendly. John looked around and smiled, expecting somebody would smile back. Nobody did. I held my breath, hoping Mrs. Parmele wouldn’t notice the empty desk next to mine. She did and pointed him in that direction. He smiled at me as he slid into the seat, but I turned my eyes away.

A week passing by, John still had no friend. “It’s his fault,” I told my mother one night. “He barely even knows how to count.” My mother had grown to know John through my nightly comments. She always listened patiently and sometimes nodded thoughtfully.

Another day at lunchtime, “Can I sit by you?” John stood by me, plate in hand and smile on face. I looked around and agreed a bit unwillingly. As I watched him eat and listened to him chat, it dawned on me that he was actually pleasant to be around. And I was determined John would remain friendless no longer.

One evening, when Mother kissed me good night, I uttered, “Mom, tomorrow is John’s birthday. He’s not going to get anything. No cake. No presents. Nobody even cares.” Mother and I both knew whenever a kid had a birthday, his mother would bring cupcakes for the class. But John’s mother worked all day. His special day would go unnoticed! “Don’t worry,” Mom said, “I’m sure everything will turn out fine.”

The next day, I wished John a happy birthday first thing in the morning, and his embarrassed smile showed me he was glad I had remembered. Till the last class, nothing special happened.

Suddenly I heard a familiar voice singing the birthday song.

John kindly shared his cupcakes with the class.
