1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Hello, Mrs. Briggs. It’s so nice of you to speak to the juniors in my business class. I try to prepare them for the world outside of high school, which they’ll soon be entering,” Ms. Johnson said, eagerly shaking my hand.

A few weeks earlier, Ms. Johnson had reached me about speaking to her class. She’d read an article in the local paper about me. She was particularly interested in my story because I’m a female who started a business from the ground up. She was passionate about preparing her high-school students for the world lying ahead. She knew they’d go in many different directions after graduation. Her enthusiasm seemed to help build my own.

So I began my speech. “I’m here to speak to you today because I’m an entrepreneur. My company, Grime Fighters, was born three years ago out of a desire to work outside the home yet be home for my kids when they came home from school. It all began with a bag of cleaning rags, a pair of household gloves, and a long-time friend who asked me to start by cleaning her house. She was pleased with my work, dependability and trustworthiness. She then passed on the name of my company to her friends. Since then, Grime Fighters has grown steadily, relying strictly on word-of-mouth, which gives me a consistent and quality customers.” I said, smiling at the sea of teens.

“I started alone with just myself cleaning houses. I began hiring employees as the business grew. I now have seven women who work part-time five days a week with hours that perfectly align for them to meet their kids when the school bus drops them off in the afternoon. These hours work smoothly for my employees as well as my clients,” I explained.

Feeling that I’d talked long enough, I asked, “Are there any questions, boys and girls?” AI this point, a young man raised his hand and said, “I’d like to know if it’s a hard job to set up your own business.”

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Next to our house lived an old couple, who, accustomed to country life, were unwilling to move to the city to live with their son and stuck in a lonely existence for many years. It seemed that they didn’t feel like making any new connections with others, including their next-door neighbours.

The neighborhood kids nicknamed the strange old couple Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. Rumor (流言,传言) was that they sat inside and drank tea all day. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!” The rosebushes crawled along the fence. Or rather, they served as a fence between our house and theirs, overgrowing the support.

I was eleven at the time and the oldest of our family girls. A suitable playing court was a headache problem for us when we felt like playing softball games, which was our favourite sport then. We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, but we secretly enjoyed annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose.

One day, we had a softball game in our yard. Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She stumbled (绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more. Just at that moment, Ruby Rednose sprang out and ran toward Mary. She screamed angrily, “Look at what you’ve doneto our family’s roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what this rosebush means to me!”

Hearing this, my sisters and I ran into our house. Breathlessly, we told Mom what had happened. “Girls, I have told you not to play softball near those bushes. Come outside right now and help me fix them.” “Mom, we thought you didn’t like the couple,” we protested. “They’re mean to us.” Mom just glared at us. We followed her outside to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked out. She looked sad. And it wasn’t her nose that was red, but her eyes.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Most of us never forget the person that was there for us in our darkest times. Apparently, penguins (企鹅) don’t either.

On a typical day, off the coast of a small Brazilian island, Joao Pereira de Souza headed out fishing. He was disheartened to find that an oil leak had polluted the waters. Staring out at the oily waves, he decided it was not a good day to fish. But walking on the beach that day, he found a struggling penguin, covered in oil and starving.

Joao took the penguin home, and spent a whole week gently cleaning it and nursing it back to health. He named it Dindim, a Portuguese word meaning “ice pop”. Dindim is a Magellanic penguin, a species known for living in the seas of South America. In order to breed (繁殖), they must return to Patagonia, 5,000 miles from Joao’s home.

After a week of rehabilitation (康复), Joao patiently took Dindim back to the sea and taught it how to swim again. When Dindim could swim quite well, Joao took it out into the sea by boat and dropped it off to encourage it to swim back to its home. But when he was back to shore, he found the penguin waiting for him. Joao made two more attempts later, but each time the bird would just return to Joao’s home. It seemed that Dindim had already formed a family bond with Joao and wouldn’t leave.

Joao had no choice but to keep the little creature. During the following months, Dindim would follow behind Joao to fish on the coast joyfully. Dindim also liked to lie on Joao’s lap, letting Joao give it showers, allowing Joao to feed it fish and to pick it up. Joao and his family enjoyed the company of Dindim. But deep inside Joao’s heart, he knew Dindim belonged to the wild. Gradually, the hot summer days witnessed the change of its new feathers. Was it time to say “goodbye”?

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完 整的短文。

I’m not going to say storms are good, because I know what they’ve stolen from people. But my story is of a storm that gave me more than I’d thought to ask for.

The tornado(龙卷风)blew through on a Sunday. We were visiting grandparents in Raleigh then, unaware that seventy miles away the big tree in our front yard was tearing through our roof and destroying the kitchen.

When we returned, we saw Rosica’s father and brothers in our yard, gathering debris(碎片)and using a chain saw to cut the thickest branches of the fallen tree, though we barely knew them then. They were covered in sweat and dirt.

My mom didn’t seem to notice how happy they were to help us because the first thing she said was “Oh, you don’t need to be doing all that work!” Mr. Flores laughed.“Claro! Of course, we don’t. But more importantly, you cannot sleep in that house tonight. Come and speak to my wife. She’ll help you figure out what to do.” My mom doesn’t usually let people tell her what to do, but she sighed(叹气)deeply as she took in the sight of our home in the failing light, reached for my hand, and followed our neighbor to their house.

The Flores family lived across the street. Their home was the same size as ours but housed three generations. Rosica was my age. I knew her name and face, but since she was new to our school, and had a different teacher than I did, we had never spoken. It was she who answered the door.“Mama is changing the sheets on the bed for you, and there’s some lemon cheesecake on the table.”

“Please don’t trouble yourself. I think I’d call a hotel and see about a room,” my mom said, more uneasy than usual. Mrs. Flores came down the stairs and smiled at us warmly, “Y our room is ready. I know it’s more encouraged to give than receive, but allow yourself to receive a place to stay, and allow us the chance to give you something you need!”

April Fools’ Day

Nat woke early and jumped out of bed. Today was the best day of the year for him. Nat loved to play tricks, and today was April Fools’ Day.

Some of Nat’s tricks were big hits. Last year, he short-sheeted his sister’s bed. She couldn’t understand what was going on and started to think that her legs must have grown much longer during the day. When she realized what had happened, she laughed her head off.

Some of Nat’s tricks were not so successful. Mom didn’t think finding a furry toy mouse in the fridge was humorous at all. After she calmed down a bit, she said, “That’s it! There’s a ban on Nat tricks for two weeks.”

Nat was also the class clown. He was always making jokes in class. He liked it when he made the other kids laugh. Since it was April Fools’ Day, he felt like he had to come up with something really good to provide his classmates with some really good entertainment.

For that, Nat thought long and hard before he came up with his brilliant idea. He bought two toy frogs which were made out of green plastic and looked very realistic. Nat knew just the trick he would play on his classmates.

Nat arrived at school early. To succeed in his plan, he needed to get into the classroom before anyone else. Nat’s class had a rainforest terrarium (饲养皿). It had plants, insects, and three frogs in it. Nat’s idea was to pretend that the frogs had escaped. He knew that Ms. Lopez, his teacher, wasn’t afraid of frogs but several of his classmates, including himself, were.

Nat slipped into the classroom. Good! There was nobody here. He put one of the toy frogs on the floor, near the terrarium and the other on his friend Stacey’s desk. Nat knew that Stacey really didn’t not like frogs. Also, she played a great trick on him last April Fools’ Day. To make his trick more convincing, Nat pushed the lid of the terrarium open. Then he rushed off to morning gathering.

Rick, a ten-year-old boy, was constantly angry at everything around him. He always fought in school with the other kids. Once he had an outburst in school. Upset by something a classmate said to him, he pushed the boy, and a fight happened. When the teacher stepped in to break it up, Rick went crazy, throwing papers and books around the classroom and rushing out. His teachers couldn’t say anything that would comfort the kid. And the parents of his schoolmates were getting concerned. Rick was earning quite the reputation. After talking with school officials, Rick’s mom tried everything she could to calm Rick down.

She tried different methods until one day she came home with a canvas (画布) and paint. “What’s this?”, Rick asked. Rick’s mom handed over the painting equipment and said, “Whenever you feel angry, paint whatever you’re angry about instead of bursting out.” Rick wasn’t that happy about it but he gave it a try anyway. Over the next few weeks, the young boy created several artworks. They mostly showed disturbing images though. So his mom took all of the paintings and called Rick over so that they could talk about them. “Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about?”

“Well, the first painting is about how some of the kids show off their new clothes and pencil cases. The next painting is about my teacher who keeps telling me about how I’m doing things wrong. And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmate’s father suggested that I change my attitude. All of them make me so angry.” Rick’s mom, in a calm voice, took Rick by her side and told him: “Don’t you see it, Rick?” “See what?” Rick asked. “You’re so angry at all of these things but not once did you try to understand why you’re getting so angry. What have all these people done to you, really?”

The Dog Who Saved Our Family

We met Max at the pickup area of Alaska Airlines five years ago. He was a standard poodle(狮子狗)born on Valentine’s Day in 2017, and came to us in a small blue box. We had adopted him from an out-of-state raiser who posted the news on the social network. Our only request was that he have a calm behavior, able to bear the pushing and hugging of our eight-year-old daughter and six-year-old son.

We were a sweet little family:me,my husband, and our children, Sophie and Jake. But for years I’d felt as if we wouldn’t really be complete until we had a dog. Also, my husband worked in a business company and had to travel some 200 days a year for his job, and I knew I’d feel safer with a large animal sleeping by the door.

When we opened the box, the last piece of our puzzle fell into place. With his black hair and intelligent eyes,Max was beautiful. He was so small that he fit into the palm of my hand, his big paws lapping over the sides. He was also a little bit scared. As I pulled him close,I felt his heart pound and wondered if we’d done the right thing, taking him from his mother. But it was too late. Sophie and Jake were already fighting over who would hold him next and who should have the right to take a bath for him.

Over the following months, we spent endless hours watching Max play with his Kong toy or roll around the living room floor. Like most poodles, he was smart. He mastered house-training quickly and never chewed on our furniture or shoes. He considered himself one of us.
