1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Tawny Nelson is a single mother of four sweet little girls aged 9, 5, 2, and one year old. It’s not easy to take care of the girls all on her own. Recently, she shared a story with Frank Somerville, a news anchor for KTVU News in California. He was so moved by her story that he shared it on his Facebook page.

Tawny’s story opened with her visiting the grocery store. It was a rainy and miserable day and by the time she got all the girls loaded in the truck and ready to head home, it was dark and pouring down. When she tried to start her truck, it wouldn’t start. With no one to call, Tawny turned to ask strangers for help to charge her truck. Hours passed and so did at least twenty people. They all ignored her. Tired and hungry, her daughters began to act out. Tawny was filled with tears when someone knocked on her passenger window.

Somerville writes, “I swear I got chills when I read what happened next.” And you will do the same when you read Tawny’s story:

I am the single mother of four absolutely beautiful little girls. They are 9, 5, 2, and one year old. And things have been particularly rough since my ex left. Our truck had a flat tire and I had to inflate it constantly. The driver side window motor died. And I needed a new belt. The truck was a mess. And we didn’t drive anywhere unless we had to. Well, the other day we desperately needed to go to the store. So we loaded up and drove to the Winn Dixie about 9 blocks away. When we got out of the store it was far after dark. And it was raining heavily. I loaded my kids and groceries into the truck.

I never grasped the importance of conserving and protecting nature and wildlife, but five months was all it took to turn my indifference into a passion that has changed the track of my life.

Early last year, I was lost and troubled by an anxiety that crippled (削弱) my ability to do anything, even those I loved. I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled on, constantly staring at this wall that faced me. My pursuit of perfection was the main root of this: I wanted to be the best at whatever I did, which obviously in life is not possible. My perfectionism has always been with me. My time in a small junior school made it easy for me to rise to the top. Upon entering a bigger senior school, though, my pursuit of perfection was far from accessible. Perfectionism in small amounts is brilliant, however in overwhelming doses it can be damaging.

One day, I attended a presentation by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my school. His presentation not only awed and inspired me, but also helped emerge an inner desire to make a difference in the world. Luckily, as a member of the Environmental Society, I was invited to join a pre-presentation dinner with him and that smaller setting allowed me to slowly build up my courage to speak one-on-one with him—an idea that had seemed completely impossible. This first contact was where my story began.

First, an application to join the Youth For Our Planet and UK Youth For Nature groups was sent around through my high school. I decided to submit my application, and soon I found myself a part of a growing global team of young people working to protect nature and creating climate solutions. Later, Brown invited me to attend the World Youth Wildlife Conference.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给的段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I eventually managed to persuade my parents to buy me a new football shirt for school matches. I was so excited. So I decided to wear it today for the first time during a match. As soon as we had been playing for ten minutes, a shirt sleeve was torn (撕破) when I made a quick turn.

I couldn’t tell my parents that my new football shirt was ruined. I needed a tailor. As I walked home, I suddenly came across a shop sign: “All kinds of repairs!”

I went inside directly. I looked around the shop and I saw broken toys.

“I guess this is the wrong place. What I really need is a tailor,” I said, putting my fingers through the tear in the shirt.

“This tear needs repairing,” I said.

“Don’t worry. This is just the right place, son. Since I opened this shop, I have repaired many things, but never a football shirt,” a man with white hair said.

“Is this the first time you’re going to repair a football shirt? I hope you aren’t going to make it worse. It’s new.”

“It’s OK. I’ve been waiting a long time to repair a football shirt.”

Then the man took the shirt from me, pulling it out of my hand.

“Are you a striker?” he asked.

Before I could reply, “Yes, how did you know?” he said, “We may see you play for a professional team one day.”

“Impossible! My dad doesn’t see football as a profession. He thinks I should be an engineer or a doctor.”

“Not at all...   People who choose a career they really desire become successful and happy.”

“Yes, you’re right! I know what I want to be! I’m not shy when I play football. I want to play just like Ridvan does! Even my father likes him!”

The man was repairing the tear with thread.

“Great! The tear hardly shows now.”

He smiled at me. I noticed a photo on the wall. It was a photo of a football team. I couldn’t make out which team it was from where I was sitting.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Building up your muscles is an easy part—the hard part is burning those layers of fat that cover your muscles. Here are some tips.

In order to work out harder, make a favorite fitness playlist with music that gets you excited, as it can help you go up to 20% longer and burn more calories, according to a study of Brunel University London. The study’s researcher says that music tends to prevent tiredness, and produces feelings of excitement.

Not only does eating good breakfast speed up your metabolism(新陈代谢), but it also nourishes (为……提供营养) your muscles. After eating breakfast, your best way of keeping fat burning going is to “graze”. Set up an eating schedule where you eat five to eight small meals every few hours throughout the day. It provides your body with a constant flow of nourishment to feed your muscles.

Men’s Health suggests choosing hard exercise that involves total body movements in order to help raise your heart rate and leave you out of breath. By including total body movements into your exercise, you’re going to end up burning a lot more calories while challenging yourself at the same time. As the saying goes: No pain, no gain. So, get moving.

Sounds easy enough, right? It’s as simple as drinking a cup of green tea every day. Adding in green tea will push fat burning to another level. And studies have shown that it can increase fat burning and help you lose weight.

While doing your weight training, try something including short, big bursts of cardio(心脏强化锻炼) throughout your exercise. For example, if you’re doing an hour-long exercise, place cardio into it every 15 minutes to help speed up your metabolism.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Good friendships seem to be especially helpful for the heart. A three-year Swedish study of more than 13,600 men and women found that having few or no close friends increased the risk of having a heart attack by about 50 percent. A two-year study of more than 500 women with suspected coronary artery(冠状动脉) disease showed similar results. Women who reported the lowest levels of social support were twice as likely to die during the study. The women who enjoyed close support were not only more likely to be alive after two years, they also had lower rates of high blood pressure and were less likely to have excessive fat.

As reported in the Journal of the National Medical Association, friendships and other types of social support can help relieve stress, a well-known contributor to heart disease. Among other things, stress can encourage inflammation (炎症) in arteries. The research is still not very mature, but some studies have found that people who enjoy close support from friends and family generally have fewer inflammatory chemicals in their blood. The link between social ties and inflammation seems to be especially marked in older people.

When stress does appear, friends can encourage healthy reactions. People who lack strong social support tend to have dramatic and potentially dangerous reactions to scary situations. Their hearts pound and their blood pressure soars. But friends can help keep the heart on a more even keel. A study published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine found that young men and women discussing rough patches in their lives had a lower pulse and blood pressure when they had a supportive friend at their side.

Finally, friendships may help encourage a heart-healthy lifestyle. As reported in Current Opinion in Psychiatry, people are more likely to eat fruit and vegetables, exercise regularly and quit smoking if they have a network of friends and family.

Should E-sports Be in the Olympics?

The International Olympic Committee and the Global Association of International Sports Federations recently hosted an e-sports forum to explore shared similarities, possible partnership and the tricky question of whether video gaming could be recognized as an Olympic event. Ever since the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris first expressed its interest in possibly adding electronic sports to the Olympic Games program, we’ve seen a growing interest by the IOC in e-sports—“since the youth are interested, let’s embrace this,” said the organizing committee of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

To tell the truth, as a former-world class high jumper, I struggle with the notion of e-sports becoming an Olympic sport. Conversations I’ve had with other Olympians reveal concerns about comparing the physical skill and demands of traditional athletic competition with e-sports.

Given the growth in popularity, it’s understandable why the IOC would want to partner with e-sports. The IOC generates more than 90 percent of its revenue from broadcast and sponsorship. The marketing firm Newzoo estimated last year that with brand investment growing by 48 per cent, the global e-sports economy will reach almost $1 billion in 2018.

What’s more, most Olympians recognize that those who participate in e-sports spend a great deal of time training—even working with nutritionists and sport psychologists to improve their prowess. But is that enough to join the Olympic Games family?

Is e-sport a sport? To answer this question, perhaps we need to revisit the academic definition of sport. While differences may exist in their granular descriptions of sport, researchers appear to converge on three central attributes: The sport involves a physical component, it is competitive, and it is institutionalized, meaning a governing body establishes the rules of performance.

While e-sports can be argued to be competitive and institutionalized, the first criterion is where it falls short. Given the IOC’s advocacy role for physical activity, e-sports seems to be a conflict with its push for an active society. In an interview with Inside the Games, Sarah Walker, an IOC Athletes’ Commission member, explained her opposition, “If I were inspired to be a gamer, I would go home and sit on the couch as my first step.”

9 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

We’ve probably all been there-a friend swears by her new diet, but when you give it a try, you don’t see the same results. What gives?

According to a new study conducted by the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, individual people can have extremely different responses to the same foods, and universal diets and dietary recommendations might not be as helpful as previously thought.

Eight hundred non-diabetic(糖尿病的) people participated in the week-long study, during which they received standardized meals for breakfast. The participants used a mobile app to report their lifestyle habits and food intake, and additional data was collected through health questionnaires, blood tests and body measurements.

Although the glycemic(血糖的) index ranks foods based on how they affect the blood sugar levels of groups of people, the researchers saw that how the food was metabolized varied greatly from person to person—and that the glycemic index depends largely on the individual. The age and body-mass index(BMI) of the participants were found to be strongly linked with differences in metabolism, as were gut microbes.

The individualized feedback was particularly compelling, and provided support for the importance of personalized nutrition plans. One woman’s blood sugar spiked when she ate tomatoes-a food that any universal diet would have advertised as a healthy choice. “For this person, an individually tailored diet would not have included tomatoes but may have included other ingredients that many of us would not consider healthy, but are in fact healthy for her,” Eran Elinav, one of the researchers, said in a statement.

Because the increase of blood glucose levels can lead to pre-diabetes and has been linked to obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and heart disease, these results are crucial to understanding how to best help people identify which foods are best for their health.

“After seeing this data, I think about the possibility that maybe we’re wrong in our thinking about the obesity and diabetes epidemic,” said Eran Segal, the other lead researcher.
