1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Once upon a time, two brothers who lived on neighbouring farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious disagreement in forty years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch.

Then the long cooperation fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and then grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

One morning, there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. I'm looking for a few days' work," he said. Perhaps you have a few jobs here and there. Could I help you?

"Yes," said John. "I do have a job for you. Look across the small stream at that farm. That's my neighbor. In fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow(草地)between us and he took his bulldozer(推土机)there and now there is a stream between us. Well, he may have done this to annoy me but I' 11 do better. See that pile of wood by the bam (谷仓)? I want you to build a fence —an 8-foot-high fence—so I won't need to see his place anymore."

The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and hole-digger and I' 11 be able to do a job that pleases you."

The older brother had to go to the town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get everything ready and then he left. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing and nailing. At sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John* s eyes opened wide and his jaw dropped.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Caleb’s fingers slowly moved over the piano keys as he searched for the next note. He’d only been taking lessons for a few weeks, and playing the piano was harder than it looked. This one, he thought as he pressed a white key. Wrong! He tried again. Oh, this one, he thought, pressing another key. Right!

“That song is challenging,” said Mrs. Lee, his piano teacher, when he finished playing. “But it sounds much better than it did last week! I can tell you’ve been practicing really hard. I think you can take a trip to the treasure chest.”

The treasure chest! Caleb’s eyes turned to the big golden box in the corner of the room. It was filled with candy and other fun prizes. This would be Caleb’s first trip to the treasure chest.

As Mrs. Lee started to teach her next student, Caleb searched through the treasure chest. Should he take the dog stickers, or the orange gum? Then he saw it — a green folder. It was his favorite color, and he could use it to carry his drawings. He reached for it. But then he saw the fruit snacks. They were strawberry, his favorite flavor. That would be a great prize too.

Folder or fruit snacks? He could not decide which choice was better. Caleb knew his mom would be there soon to pick him up, but he still couldn’t decide what to pick. The folder would be perfect for his drawings, but he could almost taste the fruit snacks.

His hand moved between the two prizes as he tried to make up his mind. Then Caleb had another thought. Maybe he could take both. Mrs. Lee had so many prizes in the treasure chest that she would never notice. It wouldn’t even be stealing only if he wouldn’t take anything next time. That would be OK, wouldn’t it?

Caleb looked at Mrs. Lee. She was busy helping her student. Quietly Caleb put the fruit snacks and the folder into his bag and went out of the room.

4 . 读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

For many years I have been feeling pity for orphans(孤儿). They lack the love of their parents and need the love and help of others. So I am doing what I can to help them. I visited them many times to experience their daily life.

Three years ago I even lived with the orphans on the street. These kids would mostly beg through the day to buy some food for themselves or eat the food given to them by the people passing by. One unusual incident happened during my second week of staying with them on the sidewalk.

I sat with them and shared the meal I had bought for them from a nearby restaurant. They sat with me in a circle and happily started eating. Suddenly one of them, a twelve-year-old boy, caught my hand, looked at me and removed my watch, and I continued eating the meal without turning around to see where the little boy ran with my watch.

After about forty-five minutes he showed up and sat beside me again. I just looked at him and smiled without saying anything about the watch. The little boy took a small packet from his pocket, opened it, had a bite of the bread and offered the same bread to me. I took it and ate it willingly. As soon as I finished eating the bread, a smile appeared on his face. Slowly he put his hand in his pocket and returned my watch. I smiled at him and wore my watch once again. The little boy later on told me that I passed the test.

“I hate them! I really hate them!" shouted Tom angrily.

Tara and Mike looked at their friend. They couldn't believe it.He was really furious!

“Andy is OK now," said Tara, trying to calm Tom down.

The three friends were in the park after school. They were talking about their friend Andy.Andy was the youngest in the class and today two bullies (欺凌者) pushed him against a locker and hurt him.Andy fell and cut his head. Now he has five stitches (缝针) in his forehead.

Their school was a nice, peaceful place until Brian and Mark arrived a few months ago.Brian and Mark were bullies and their favorite trouble spot was the locker room. That morning their victim was Andy, maybe because he was smaller and younger than everyone else in the class.

The teachers knew that there were some bullying incidents at school. But most kids didn't want to report the incidents. So bullying at their school wasn't an“official" problem.

During the incident Andy cut his head.As soon as the bullies saw the blood, they disappeared.Andy called for help and a teacher came and took him straight to the hospital. But Andy didn't tell the teacher about the bullies. When the head teacher asked him, he simply said,“I fell and cut my head"

“Brian and Mark must pay!" repeated Tom.He was walking around in circles and hitting the palm of his left hand with his right fist.“Can't you see? You are behaving like the bullies," Tara said sadly.Mike looked at Tom, too, and he knew Tom very well, Tom hated violence.“bullying is not cool,”said Mike, waving his arms like he was dancing.“We have to tell someone about this," said Tara.“Andy was hurt."

But right now, Tom had other things on his mind.He not only hated the bullies but also hated violence. He was in a dilemma一he wanted to fight Brian and Mark but he didn't want to fight with the bullies by violence.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My friend Mike is very poor. But I think he is the luckiest boy I've ever known. He is one of a large, happy family.

One hot day, we were going to the ball field for a big game. "How hot it is today!” I said. “It is too far to walk to the ball field on a day like this. We'd better take a bus. ”

“Yes, it is hot,“ said Mike. " So let's go by bus. I think it is all right for me to take a dime for the bus (一角硬币). ”

I followed him into his house. He put his hand into a small bag hanging on the door. Then he brought out some money. After taking one dime, he put the rest of the money back.

“Who owns the money?” I asked. "Is it all right for you to take money from the bag?”

“Yes," he smiled. "This money belongs to every one of us in the family. When we children earn money, we put it into the bag. Father puts in the most. Then when we need money, we can take it from the bag. The money bag is Mother's idea. She thinks it will teach us to spend money carefully and to know its real value. ”

“Doesn't anyone know how much you take?” I asked.

“Oh, no,“ said Mike. "Mother says we must trust each other.

“But couldn't you take out more than you need for the bus?” I asked.

“I could,“ answered Mike. "But then there might not be enough money for Jane and Fred. Someone in our family is always needing something. If I take more than I need, there won't be enough to go around.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I am a frequent interstate traveler. I was born in Ontario, Canada and thus all my family except my husband and children live there. So three times a year I make a trip north from Georgia to visit. I often travel by myself as my children are all grown and my husband is working.

Two years ago I went up in the spring and brought one of my sisters south for a month to take away the pains of a long winter. This year I did the same. It is interesting that many of my friends have said "Aren't you scared?" or "What if you break down?”. I always respond that I have a lot of faith in the Lord and in myself. My husband is a mechanic and each year gives my 230,000+ miles car a good checkup. He will come for me if I need help.

Here is how my miracle happened on Interstate 85 North in South Carolina. Heading north to take my sweet sister of 63 home to Canada, we were chatting away and I was driving 70 miles per hour in the third lane over. Yes, the fastest lane. All of a sudden, I started to lose power. I said anxiously I was losing power and got over to the next and then the right lane, I was driving at about 40 miles per hour when I got to the first exit. I finally arrived at a Citgo station and pulled off the road.

I immediately called my husband and he didn't answer. I was thinking he never answered his phone. I called 2 more times saying please answer the phone to myself. I was getting pretty upset thinking what I should do. I got out of the car and looked under it and smelled gas. Then* I checked the oil and water. Luckily, both were good! My sister went into the gas station and said to the clerk if he knew anyone who could help us and then said pray for us as she made her way to the rest room.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.

The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out?

Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was capable of more.

So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked, “This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard?"

“The thought hadn't crossed my mind."

“Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class.”

Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me-You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.

Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.

Work started soon. A well- intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.

Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a cold, stormy winter day, an old friend invited me out for a cup of coffee. We met by his house, and as we walked down the street, we passed by a small cafe with a sign hanging on the door that read: “You're welcome in. We have suspended coffee.”

“Suspended coffee?” I asked my friend. “What does that mean?” “You've never heard of it?” my friend asked, and I shook my head. “Follow me,” he told me, and we joined the line of people standing in front of the cash register.

“What can I offer you today?” The cashier asked a couple of young lawyers who were looking at the menu. “I think we'll take three cups of coffee,” one of them said. “2 now, and 1 suspended.” The cashier nodded, as if it were an ordinary order, took payment and placed two cups of hot coffee on the counter. The two thanked him, took the two cups and left without waiting for the third. The next in line was an older couple. “Same order as always?” The cashier smiled at them. “Yes, thank you,” replied the woman. “But please add two suspended coffees, we haven't purchased any of those for quite a while.”

A few minutes later the couple received their order, and our turn to order arrived. “Good morning!” said the cashier. “How can I help you?” “I think we'd like two cups of coffee,” my friend said. “We'll drink them here.” When our order was ready, we took our cups and sat down to drink them together. “Will you tell me what this is about?” I asked my friend, but he just said: “Wait and see.”

Our conversation flowed, and before we noticed it, nearly two hours passed. The cafe was almost empty of people when the door suddenly opened and a man in old shabby clothes and a tired look came in and stood quietly in front of the cash register.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

One year, a newspaper of the United States published an announcement that the horticultural institute offered a reward at a high price for the pure white marigold (金盏花). The high reward attracted so many people, but in nature besides golden, the marigold is brown, and it is not easy to grow the white one. So after they were excited for a time, many people had forgotten the announcement.

Years flew away. One normal day after 20 years, the horticultural institute that had published the announcement accidentally received a letter and 100 seeds of pure white marigold. On that day the news spread like wildfire.

It turned out to be an old woman of over 70 years old. The institute had always been hesitating over the fact that the letter said with certainty that the seeds could bloom pure white marigold, and the need for verification (验证) became the focus of the debate. Whether they would make an experimental verification or not became the controversial focus at one time.

Some said you would never live up to the old man’s wish. Those seeds finally took root in the earth. The miracle appeared after one year: large patches of pure white marigold waved in the breeze.

Accordingly, the old woman who was always unknown to the public became a new focus.

Originally, the old woman was a flower lover. When she occasionally read the announcement in the newspaper 20 years ago, she was eager to try. But her eight children strongly opposed her decision. After all, a woman who never knew the seed genetics (遗传学) couldn’t complete what the experts could never achieve, so her thought seemed very foolish.
