2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My teacher held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?” Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher might have found out. She seldom became angry, but she was this time.

“Oh,” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn’t even get an allowance (零花钱). “My father is going to have a temper,” I thought. I didn’t want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward. I told the truth, “I did it.” Then I was silent. It was hard enough saying what I had.

My teacher went to one of our bookshelves and took down a book on bird field guide. She then began walking towards my desk. I had never seen my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.

It is brave to admit your mistake. You may be scared of being scolded. But it is the only way for you to be free from guilt.

Simon was a curious boy. He lived with his grandfather. Simon was fond of reading adventure stories. So he was always curious about the store room where his grandfather kept his priceless antiques(古董). Though Simon knew his grandfather did not like anyone to touch his rare collections, he quietly entered the storeroom without his grandfather’s permission one night.

Once inside the room, Simon stood on a chair. He lifted the big box wherein his grandfather had kept many valuable watches bought from different countries he had visited. While getting down from the chair, Simon’s elbow(肘部) struck against the chair. When he tried his best to pull his arm out, the box slipped out of his hands and fell onto the floor. All the watches lay all around. To his shock, he found the glass of his grandfather’s favorite watch broken. Simon was afraid that his grandfather would come to know about the broken glass. He started picking up the pieces of glass hurriedly. Simon thought, “My grandmother gifted the watch to my grandfather. This must be one of his most treasured possessions. How could I tell him that his favorite watch had broken? He must be angry with me. If I do not tell him, he will not come to know about it.” Simon got nervous. His heart started beating faster. He put the broken watch back into the box and placed the box back on the shelf. Afterwards, he went to sleep. However, he could not sleep in peace throughout the whole night. The broken watch even showed up in his dream.

The next morning, Simon got up much earlier than before. The sleepless night made him realize that holding back the truth itself was more uncomfortable than breaking the watch. “But that watch is Grandpa’s favorite and he told me to be careful of the box before.” Simon said to himself and didn’t dare to face his grandfather.

One Friday afternoon, some of my classmates planned to take a hike in a jungle(丛林), including my friends Jake and Liam. They asked me if I would like to go with them. I love outdoor activities, so I immediately said yes.

It was sunny the following morning. I was in a very good mood. I was so excited about hiking since it was the first time that I had hiked with them. I ate a light breakfast. After that, I hurriedly ran out of my house to meet them in the school playground.

The jungle where we were going was far from our school. It took about three hours to go there by bus, but it wasn’t a boring journey as we were all eager to hike. After we got off the bus, we found a local guide to ensure our safety. The guide, whose name is Thomas, said that he had hiked there lots of times and that he was familiar with the route. When we arrived, Thomas told us never to leave the group. He warned us that we would easily get lost in the jungle if we walked alone. Then we began to hike.

There were various plants which we had never seen before. All of us were amazed at the beauty of the scenery and the sounds of the creatures. Sadly, after hiking for about an hour, I found that my watch on my wrist was gone. I realized that my watch had fallen off. It was a gift from my grandma, and I loved it very much. Without thinking, I turned back and tried to find my watch. Since I was the last one walking in the group, nobody noticed it when I walked away.

I wasn’t worried about getting lost because I thought I could find my watch easily. However, when I finally found my watch and tried to catch up with my friends, they had gone far. I immediately realized that I was alone and lost.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When Ariel rode her bike to Jamaie Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York, last November, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. After a one-mile walk, she found a beautiful female swan (天鹅) near the water’s edge. Ariel, 30 , who had worked at the Wild Bird Fund health recovery center, knew that some swans can be aggressive (攻击性的). But as she approached this one, it didn’t move. Ariel found that the swan which buried its neck in its wings seemed to have lost its all energy.

She was certain that the bird needed medical attention. Ariel took off her jacket and covered the bird’s head to keep it calm, carefully picked it up, and carried it in her arms gently. And then a thought struck her: What do I do now?

Her best choice was the recovery center, but that was across the East River and clear on the other side of town. How was she going to transport a 17-pound swan on her bike all that way? Luckily, some warm-hearted strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station.

On the subway, no one seemed particularly to focus on the feathered passenger. “One man was sitting right in front of me on his phone. I don’t know if he noticed there was a swan in front of him.” said Ariel. Ariel called the center, and Tristan Higginbotham, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove the bird, the bike, and the rescuer to the center.

Shrieking Toad and Dancing Ant

Kids got nicknames at a summer camp, and mine is Shrieking Toad (尖叫的蛤蟆). I guess it was my fault that I couldn't get a cool one.

A bunch of us campers were on our first nature walk. When we broke for lunch, we sat down on logs. I was on my nuts when a tree frog dropped onto my shirt from the branches above. I shrieked. It was totally unconscious and I didn't even know I could make a sound like that. Most kids forgot about it except Stan. Whenever I walked by, he'd shout, “Shrieking Toad, show us how you can hop!” I corrected him that it had been an eastern gray tree frog, not a toad, but that just made things worse.

Three days later, Counselor Matt announced we would be paired for a treasure hunt. Excited whispers spread through the camp. But when he read “Jay and Stan” as a team, my nerves got completely fried. Stan shouted, “Great! Shrieking Toad!” Then he called to the group, and I went red at what came out of his mouth. “Guys, if mosquitoes are bugging you, ask Shrieking Toad to eat them. Toads love bugs!” Kids roared with laughter.

After all the teams wandered off, Stan and I were alone. Then I had a great idea, surprising myself that I hadn't thought of it earlier. I suggested we split up so as to have a better chance of finding treasures. “Yeah, I'd better do what I'm toad (told).” Stan laughed and set off.

Ten minutes later, I heard something that reminded me of myself a few days ago. I ran toward the sound. I never would have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Stan was jumping around near a mud pool like a monkey, shrieking and yelling something that sounded like “Dance! Dance!” Seeing him scratching at his body and hitting at his clothes made me realize what he was really saying: “Ants! Ants!”

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped loose-fitting pajama (睡衣) top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.

Mohi said in a quiet voice, “Sorry, teacher,”and ran with quick short steps to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down. Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day, it was the loose-fitting pajama top and green sandals.

Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.

The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。续写的词数150左右

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school. On turning a cornner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”

“No” said Henry. “Let us go home quietly and not meddle with (管闲事) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together and I don’t want them to worry about me.”

“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down on Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behaviour, because he knew that they misunderstood him, and that they ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home together with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled and cried for help, but he failed. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did nothing to help him.

Paragraph 1

It seemed as if Robert would be dying.

Thus, Robert’s life was saved.

9 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The cost of a smile

Kathy was a young woman in her 20’s who worked in a small restaurant as a waitress. One day, as she went about her shift with her usual angry look, a kind old man walked in and sat down at the counter. He read the menu and politely told her what he wanted.

Kathy took his order and yelled, “Your food will be ready soon.” As she turned to leave, the man said, “A smile costs nothing”. Kathy rolled her eyes at him and walked away.

She brought his order, cleared his plates, and gave him the bill, for which he left a nice tip.

Each time the old man saw her, he smiled and thanked her. This only made her angrier.

A week went by, and every day the man came for lunch and the same thing happened. And each time Kathy took his order he would say, “A smile costs nothing.”

But a week later, Kathy picked up a menu, wrote the words “1 SMILE … $20" at the bottom, and placed it on the counter for the kind old man to see.

He came, and Kathy waited for his reaction as he read the menu. The old man ordered his usual and added, “… and a smile, if you don’t mind”. Kathy was so surprised. She laughed out loud, “Now, now …” The man jokingly scolded. “I ordered a smile, not a laugh”. So Kathy put on a bright smile and said, “Coming right up, sir.” And to her surprise, he left $20 tip!

A few years went by, and the two bonded like family. Charlie, the kind old man, was a retired manager whose wife passed away long ago. He spent most of his time at home, with the exception of his frequent restaurant visits. Every day Kathy spent her break talking to him.
