Near daybreak the previous day, my friend Jess and I set out on a journey southwest from our snow-covered home in Ottawa, bound for Arizona, a warm place to escape the freezing winter. After loading our equipment and my dog Bailey into my old car, we drove along the freeway with the radio playing lively tunes. So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.

One day, Leon’s math teacher, pulled him aside. “ You need to do better, a lot better, or you’re not going to pass this class. There’s a big test coming up. ”
Leon’s heart sank. When he got home, he talked with Edward about it. The boys agreed that over the next two weeks they intended to spend an hour each day after school working on math problems and then an hour playing basketball.
“Here is a good one,” Edward said and pointed to a word problem. “ Why don’t you read it?”
Leon looked at the book for several seconds. “ I’m dizzy already!” He exclaimed.
“Do you know what the first step is?” asked Edward, “The first step is to stay cool and focused.” Edward talked Leon through the problem. “Think about what you need to find out. Don’t let the problem trick you.” Step by step, together they figured it out and got the right answer. Leon soon discovered that Edward was really good at helping him.

I rewrote it and with Henry’s encouragement, I sent it to a magazine. To my surprise, it was published and sold well.

Two months ago, Ryder Killam, a 15-year-old French boy was registered in a new school in Hawaii. He just moved there with his parents. Although he missed his old friends very much, he managed to adapt to his new school life and soon made a lot of friends.
However, waiting for the school bus every morning often meant a real suffering because Ryder was born with spina bifida （脊柱裂）and he has to live in a wheelchair. Hawaii is one of the rainiest places in the world. This is not an issue for other students, but for him this was a different story. He often got wet all over before the school bus arrived during the rainy days. In that case, he could only have classes with wet clothes on or called his parents to send dry clothes to school and finding a place to get changed was also a big challenge for this disabled boy.
To keep Ryder protected from the bad weather while waiting for the bus every morning, the students in Ryder's school decided to take action. They first uploaded a post on Facebook asking for an unused bus shelter but got no reply.
Not being able to find one, the students from the construction class decided to take on the challenge of building a customized bus shelter for him and quickly put their hands to work.
As part of the high school's Career and Technical Education program, the construction class teaches its students basic building skills. Its main goal is to provide students with tools and skills that will have real applications in future jobs and a meaningful impact on their community. They had already performed several building projects for the community. Two years ago, they managed to build dozens of shelters for stray cats in the local park. Soon enough, they came up with an idea of building a two-window shelter for Ryder.

I almost cried when I talked about it. Mrs. Sharpnack comforted me, saying, “If we work together, I believe you can change it.” For a moment, I wondered if she would be right. “What time does your bus come?” she asked. I had 30 minutes left before my bus came, and I told her so. She asked if I would like to use that time to go over the math problems I had met. Encouraged by her, I answered. “I guess so.”
We started right then and made a plan to meet each day for two weeks, after which Mrs. Sharpnack would give me a test to check my progress. After Mrs. Sharpnack helped me go over a few problems that day, it was time for my bus to come. I waved her goodbye. In the following days, I continued staying with Mrs. Sharpnack after class. She went over each problem, carefully explaining the solutions.
Sometimes I still couldn’t understand what she had said. She stayed calm, though, and would think of a different way to explain the answer. The day to take the test came quickly.
