2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In our home, there are two coins apparently pressed by something heavy. One is in my father’s hand, the other mine. Both of them remind us of the history…

Doing things with my father was always fun due to his rich imagination. I don’t recall a time when Dad stood across my path; he always walked beside me, guiding me with his own steps. When, at 10, I announced that I was going to Africa to bring back wild animals, my mother and sisters pointed out my age, the problems of transportation and all such ordinary and unimportant facts.

But not Dad. He brought home books about Africa, train and boat schedules, and even some iron bars which we used to build cages for the animals I was to bring back. When the departure day was approaching and I was becoming anxious, my father brought home a newspaper that told of an accident on the railroad that was to take me to Baltimore. This postponed my trip and, by the time the train tracks were repaired, he and I were off on a new and more exciting project.

When a neighbor’s dog killed my dog Bounce, I was determined to kill that dog. I thought about it day after day, almost making myself ill. “Let’s get it done,” my father stated unexpectedly in a whisper one evening. I followed him, to discover that he had tied the dog. He gave me a gun, and then stepped back for me to do the work. The dog and I looked at each other. He shook his tail to express friendship. Suddenly the gun was too heavy for me to hold and it dropped to the ground. The dog came up and kissed my hand. The three of us walked home together, the dog jumping in front. No word was ever said about what had happened. None was needed.

When President Harding died, the funeral train was scheduled to pass through a town about 20 miles from ours. I wanted desperately to go and see this train, but Mother pointed out that there would be school the next day and that it would be a long trip. That ended the discussion.

Now that Maria was a tenth grader, she felt she was too grown-up to have to go on family vacation. Last year, the family had driven three hundred miles to see their uncle in West Covina. After the first four days of doing nothing while the adults sat around talking, the kids finally got to go to Disneyland.

The parents gave each child five dollars. Maria’s younger sister, Irma, bought a Pinocchio coloring book. Her brothers, Rudy and John, spent their money on candies. Maria knew everything was overpriced so she saved her money. She sat on a bench, jealously (嫉妒地) watching other teenage girls who seemed much better dressed than she was. She felt stricken by poverty.

This year Maria’s family planned to visit an uncle in San Jose. Her father promised to take them to Great America, but she knew that the grown-ups would sit around talking for days before they remembered the kids. They would have to wait until the last day before they could go to Great America. It wasn’t worth the boredom.

“Dad, I’m not going with you this year,” Maria said to her father. He thought for a moment and said, “When I was a kid, we didn’t have money for vacations. I would be happy to go with my father.”

“I know, I know. You’ve said that a hundred times, ”she said in a sharp voice. The father’s eyes were fixed on her with a dark stare. It seemed as though time had frozen.

“Let the girl stay. She’s big now,” Eva, his wife, said. The father argued, but eventually (最终) agreed to let his daughter stay.

The family rose just after six the next day and was ready to go by seven-thirty. Maria stayed in her room. She wanted to apologize to her father but she couldn’t. She knew that if she said sorry to her father, she would break into tears. Her father wanted to come into her room and say “We’ll do something really special this vacation. Come with us, honey”, but it was hard for him to show his feelings.

They left at last, leaving Maria at home on her own.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A couple of years ago, just as I did every winter, I bagged up all the items in my closet that I no longer wore, along with the clothes my sons had outgrown. I made a call to action to all of my family and friends, asking them to do the same. It is always my hope to repurpose those things that do nothing more than take up space in our homes, things others might make better use of.

I found an old, ugly pair of hand-woven socks in one of the bags donated (捐赠) by a friend. They were an unpleasant mixture of colored yarn: orange, purple, yellow and blue. I had to decide— garbage or donation? It wasn't like they were unusable. I imagined they were a homemade gift gone bad.

I put the ugly socks in the garbage, but ten minutes later, I took them back and put them in the donation pile. Later that afternoon, my mother and I drove down to Madison Avenue in downtown Phoenix. Every winter we load up my Jeep with our own cast-offs and the donations from friends, and we take them downtown, along with food and water, to distribute (分发) them to the men and women living on the street. Sometimes I even got my boys involved.

On this particular afternoon, as Mom and I distributed warm clothes and hot food to a small crowd of people outside a local homeless shelter, I reached into the bag and pulled out the last of the donations, the ugly socks. Just as I was about to drop the socks back into the empty bag, laughing at myself for even bringing them along for the ride, a teenage boy came to me. “Can I please have those socks?” he asked, his blue eyes sparkling in the sun.

My eyebrows lifted. I was ashamed to say it but I was still a little embarrassed by the donation and disappointed that we hadn’t anything left to give him except for those socks.

I walked into a restaurant and sat down at a table. I picked up a menu, trying to decide what to eat.“Excuse me. Is your name Roger?” asked someone, who touched me on the shoulder. I looked up and turned to the side to see a rather nice looking woman standing before me. “Yes.” I replied, looking rather confused as I had never seen the woman before.

“My name is Barbara and my husband is Tony. He is from George High School.” she said, pointing to a distant table near the door. I looked in the direction but I did not recognize the man who was sitting alone at the table, with a wheelchair (轮椅) around the corner.

“I'm really sorry. The name doesn't ring a bell.”I said.

She turned and walked back to her table. She and her husband immediately began talking and once in a while looked directly at me.

I sat there, thinking hard and tried to remember who this Tony guy was. “I must know him, ”I thought to myself. “He recognizes me for some reason.” I picked up my coffee and took a sip. All of a sudden, it came to me like a flash lightning.

“Tony. THE BULLY (校园霸凌者). The bully of my seventh grade geography class.” I said to myself. I turned around and faced in his direction.

How many times that guy had made fun of my big ears in front of girls? How many times he called me “four-eyed toad”? How many times he pushed me up against the lockers just to make himself look like a big man to all the other students?

He raised his hand and waved at me. I smiled, returned the wave and turned back and began to eat my breakfast.

“Goodness. He's so thin now. Not the big guy that I remembered,” I thought to myself.

All of a sudden I heard the sound of dishes breaking so I turned around to see what had happened.

Some researchers think there might be a connection between UFOs and angel sightings. They say the angels and heavenly figures might actually have been extraterrestrials(外星人)。

After his experience in the 1980s with "the most beautiful thing" he ever saw, Lewis might agree with that assessment.

It was a Saturday morning in Mariposa, California, and Lewis had to work that day. The air was fresh from a cool rain the night before, and the morning sky was bright with a few scattered clouds.

"I was heading out to my car in the back parking lot of the apartment complex where I lived when I noticed someone kneeling next to my car," Lewis says. "This person saw me and quickly stood up holding a crowbar(撬棍),"

The young man was quite obviously astonished by Lewis's interruption, and although Lewis sensed the boy was up to no good, it hadn't yet hit him what he was doing. Then Lewis looked through the passenger window of his car and saw that the steering wheel column had been stripped(脱去)of its cover. He realized that the young man was trying to steal his car.

"I asked him what he was doing," Lewis recalls, "He gave me a lame story about his friend's car being stolen last night and that my car looked like his friend's and so on. I didn't want to hear it. I told him I was going to call the police, which I did on my cell phone."

Lewis dialed 911 and gave the dispatcher(调度员)the address. He told the would-be thief that the police were on their way and warned him not to leave. "If he did, I wasn't going to try to stop him because he had that crowbar," Lewis says.

As Lewis was questioning the young man, trying to detain(扣留)him, he began to notice three rather large clouds in a single-file formation that were almost overhead.

"Then I saw it," he says."A shiny object exited from the first cloud and entered the next and then came out of that one. It was shiny, like brightly polished objects, moving at a good speed. I couldn't make out the shape."

The most important change in a person’s life is the change of his or her attitude. Right attitudes produce right actions. Have you ever met someone who gave you a different view of life?

On a Sunday morning, I saw something very interesting as I went to the greengrocer’s. To get there, I had to cross a bridge over railway tracks. The bridge was pretty high. A set of steep steps had to be climbed; then the bridge flattened out (变平), followed by coming down another set of steps. On my way back from the greengrocer’s, I saw an elderly gentleman running up the steps. After watching him run up the steps so fast, I thought that he could be in a rush.

Before I knew it, he had crossed the bridge, and then he ran back to where he started. To my surprise, he did not stop. He turned around, and then went up and down the bridge again. He was not struggling, and seemed to enjoy going up and down the bridge. Being a fitness fanatic (热衷于健美的人) myself, I admired his ability to Cross the bridge so quickly. My curiosity got the better of me, and I came up to him to have a chat with him.

“Excuse me, sir. Are you training for an event?” I asked.

He stopped. “No, not training for an event. Well, I am training for life,” he said with a broad smile on his face as sweat rolled down his cheeks.

I told him that I had been looking for a role model of fitness, and that I hoped to be as strong as he is when I get to his age. He said that everyone has a choice about what they do with their life. “I am not different,” he added. With much admiration, I asked, “What drives you to maintain good health?”

Then he told me the accident he met with when he was young.

The young woman sat crying at one of the back tables of a small restaurant at a fuel service station, on a highway where truck drivers and traveller stopped. Two girls, perhaps four and five years old, watched their mother tensely.

I am a patrolman, which is a policeman who is assigned to patrol a specific route. I am with the Knox County, Tennessee, Sheriff’s Department, and was sent to check on the family after someone telephoned, concerned about the woman’s weeping. A flash of fear crossed the older child’s eyes as I approached her. “Daddy left us,” she said. “He just put our stuff out of the car while we were in the bathroom.”

“Is that so, little lady?” I said. “I want you two to climb on those stools over there and order something to eat.”

Reluctantly they crossed to the stools. I called the waitress to take their order.

“Now, what’s the problem?” I asked the woman.

“Just what my girl said,” she replied, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. “ My husband is not cruel — just at the end of his rope. We have no money; we’re flat broke. He thought that we’d get more help alone than if he stayed.”

“Do you have family?”

“The nearest is in Chicago.”

We sat there discussing organisations and government agencies that could help her. When the waitress brought hot dogs and French fries to the little girls, I went to the counter and took out my wallet to pay.

“The owner says no charge,” the waitress said. “We know what’s going on.”

It had been a year since Susan, an attractive young woman of 34, became blind and she was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self pity. And all she had to cling to(依靠) was her husband, Mark.

Mark, an Air Force officer, loved Susan with all his heart and he was determined to help his wife gain the strength and confidence she needed to become independent again.

Finally, Susan felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get there? Mark volunteered to drive her to work each day, even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.

At first, this comforted Susan. Soon, however, Mark decided that Susan had to start taking the bus again on her own. But she was still so fragile(脆弱的), so angry - how would she react?

Just as he predicted, Susan was horrified at the idea of taking the bus again. "How am I supposed to know where I am going? I feel like you're abandoning(抛弃) me." she responded bitterly.

Mark's heart broke to hear these words, but he knew what had to be done. He promised Susan that he would ride the bus with her, for as long as it took, until she learned how to do it.

For two weeks, Mark, in military uniform , accompanied Susan to and from work each day. He taught her everything to adapt to her new environment, including befriending the bus drivers who could watch out for her, and save her a seat.

Finally, Susan decided to try the trip on her own. Monday morning arrived, she said good-bye to Mark, and for the first time, they went their separate ways.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday... Each day on her own went perfectly, and Susan had never felt better. She was doing it!

On Friday morning, as she was paying the fare to get off the bus as usual, the driver said, "Young lady, I sure do envy(羡慕) you."

Surprised and curious, she asked the driver, "Why do you say that you envy me?"

Ann loves dogs, but she doesn’t have time to keep even one. Her husband died from an accident, leaving little money but a 10-year-old son, Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation. She had to work all day to support the whole family. One morning, Ann found a lost dog wandering around the local school. She waited there for half an hour but nobody came back to look for it. She had no choice but to take it home and asked her sons to keep an eye on the dog on the day while she was working.

Ann took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers as soon as she came back from work. After a quick supper , Ann, with Jack went out and put them in mailboxes. The next day, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, asking the boy to look after it for another day, and she hoped it would be the last day. She didn’t forget to warn her son not to fall in love with the dog, for they had no money or time.

Four days later no one called to claim, so Ann’s family was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. One day when she arrived home from work, the dog barked madly at her and dashed into the boy’s room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack.

“If you had come to me ten minutes later,” the doctor said, “Jack would have not been saved.”

Still no one had called to claim the dog, and it had been the best friend of her son. Ann decided to keep it, although she knew it would bring so much difficulty.
