1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In DeAnza Community College, 15 minutes’ drive from the university Trevor Wallace studied in, his beloved grandmother had worked there. When she was alive, she was a respected learning disabilities specialist and instructor. In recognition of her work, her co-workers dedicated a large, cement angel fountain with a plaque (匾) saying Heart’s Garden: In Memory of Marilyn Rosenthal. That was in 1999.

Trevor knew well that the fountain meant a lot to his mom, Sarene. She was only 36 when her mom died. At the sight of anything to do with her mother, she would tell stories or anecdotes related, especially the fountain. Though she cherished it, living six hours away, she didn’t have the opportunity to visit it regularly.

As time went on, the fountain was hidden under trees, falling into disrepair----the statue’s bowl at its base broken; cement benches nearby damaged; the water pump blocked with leaves and the surrounding area littered with dead leaves and trash, etc.

Finally, in 2013, it was once repaired by one of the school gatekeepers, who thought she was popular with colleagues and students when she was alive. After knowing the repair, Sarene and Trevor took the 300-mile trip to visit it. On a quiet afternoon, they posed for a photo together. Sarene recalled, “We sat watching the fountain for a while. The water welled over then it went into the bowls. It was so peaceful.”

Flash forward to 2015. When deciding what to give his mom for Mother’s Day, the fountain came to mind. Trevor called Sarene that Sunday to wish her a happy Mother’s Day and told her to expect a surprise. Then he drove to DeAnza with his camera, tripod, and two sponges.

When he arrived, the fountain was covered with leaves and piled with dirt, in worse shape than he had expected. Motivated by memories of his late grandmother, whom he called “Bubby”, he set up his camera on the tripod, checked the lighting and took a before shot. Then his hand-scrubbing (手工擦洗) work began.

2 . Superman Learns How to Ride

It was the summer of 1967, and the moment was nearing when I would cast off my training wheels and learn to ride a bike.

As an adventurous little boy, I sure put my overactive imagination to good use. I would pretend to be the bookish reporter, Clark Kent. Then, at the first sign of something wrong, I disappeared and emerged moments later with a red towel hanging from the collar of my dirty blue T-shirt and an ironed-on letter “S” on my chest.

“This is a job for Superman!” I would cry out as I flew to meet imaginary dangers that threatened the world.

“Hey, Superman, when are you going to learn to ride a bike?” the neighborhood kids would taunt as they rolled past. “The Man of Steel still uses training wheels!” they laughed.

As I watched them ride away, I realized I was being left behind. To claim my place among their ranks, I needed to cast off my training wheels and learn to ride with the big kids. I turned to my father for help.

“Okay, I’m going to let go, and you just remember to balance,” Dad advised patiently on my tenth try. Suddenly I was riding! I dared to smile as my father’s shouts of encouragement faded into the background. My smile widened. Victory was mine.

You are going to fall. The thought was at first a whisper and then grew louder and more convincing until I believed it must be true. After all, I had always fallen before. Why should this time be any different? Fear seized me, and my confidence weakened and I couldn’t grasp the handlebars tightly. Sure enough, I fell to the grass.

“You almost had it,” Dad said, catching his breath. “You are seized with a sense of fear so you fell.”

“I quit,” I said angrily, trying to fight back the tears of frustration. “I don’t want to learn to ride.”

A Modest and oveele Thanksgiving Feast

Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action. —W. J. Cameron

We had finally decided to skip our traditional family dinner and make the holy journey to Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade(游行)with our five-year-old daughter, Kerry. We never anticipated what Kerry would take away from the experience,or how it would affect our lives for years to come.

We caught the dawn train from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central along with hundreds of other excited celebrants. Like many other families we packed a small backpack with sliced turkey sandwiches and juice boxes;eating on the fly in New York City is expensive and complicated, unless you settle for pretzels and roasted chestnuts from a street food stand. Kerry was wide-eyed and a little overwhelmed. This was not her ordinary outing with Mom and Dad.

As the train pulled into the terminal(终点站),everyone rose and stood in the passage anxiously waiting to get off and head toward the parade route along Fifth Avenue. Rather than have our little daughter pushed roughly by the crowds,we waited until everyone had stepped off onto the chaos of the platform. As we walked up to the entrance to the terminal,Kerry spotted a homeless woman sitting in the shadows, invisible to all except my curious daughter.

“What’s that?”she asked. We looked at each other, caught off guard(措不及防)by the need to explain something very different than the happy scene we were about to join. During our first years of parenthood we’d discussed how we would explain such nearly ineffable topics as God death, and eventually sex and love. But homelessness? We weren’t prepared. We gave as simple and honest an explanation as we could find and continued on to the parade.

The following year,we decided to attend the parade again. So the night before Thanksgiving we went shopping for sliced turkey for sandwiches.

When my son Ryan was six years old and in first grade, his teacher, Nancy, talked to his class about developing countries and how they could help people, particularly children, in other parts of the world. She explained that besides not having toys or enough food, some of them didn’t even have clean water. When Ryan heard people died because they didn’t have clean water, he was deeply affected. He came home that day and insisted he needed seventy dollars for class the next morning.

We thought it was very nice that he wanted to do something important, but we didn’t take it seriously. After all, Ryan was only six years old-and we just ignored it.

The next day, Ryan came home very upset because he hadn’t been able to take the seventy dollars to school. People were dying, and he insisted he needed that money.

Mark and I discussed it, then explained to Ryan that seventy dollars was a lot of money. If he was really interested in doing something, however, he could earn it by doing some chores.

He happily agreed and worked and worked and worked. With every two dollars he earned, he got to throw his money into a cookie tin. He never stopped working. He did chores for the neighbors and his grandparents, picked up brush after an ice storm-and it all went right into the cookie tin!

After four months, Ryan was nearing his goal. And we took him to a Canadian nonprofit organization providing clean water for people in developing countries.

However, Nicole, the chief director, thanked him and told him it would cost a lot more than $70 to build a well-in fact, it would cost $2,000.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Ryan wasn’t concerned and replied simply, “That’s okay. I’ll just do more chores!”.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My family was poor so I was pleasantly surprised when my mother came up with the money to purchase my fourth-grade class picture. Twenty-two students lined up in three rows and faced the camera with smiles. My teacher, Mrs. Cornell, stood to the side. She kept strict rules, but I loved her. I held my one-and-only class picture like a new teddy bear. I wanted to be a person like her.

As the years passed, I’d run across that fourth-grade picture. It always reminded me that I’d wanted to become a teacher. Even after getting married, I would still long for the teaching career I never got to have.

Once my children were all in school, I had some time to myself. The eagerness to teach was still there, but I was now forty-two. I hadn’t been a student for over twenty years. Having only my husband’s income made money an issue as well.

Anyway, I managed to come up with enough money for my first term. With a step of faith, I moved forward. College proved to be a blessing and a challenge. I attended lessons and challenged myself to learn new things. My days and nights were spent on difficult textbooks. I would look at the picture when I was tired. Gradually, I found myself enjoying the classes.

One day, a professor mentioned a grant (补助金) was available to those going into education upon their graduation. Would they even consider giving the money to someone of my age? I had a few good years left in me, but I couldn’t compete with the youngsters who had a lifetime of teaching ahead of them. Feeling I had nothing to lose, I began the lengthy application process followed by an interview. All I could do was wait and hope.

Several weeks later, I received a call from my professor telling me I’d been selected as a candidate for the program. I’d have to invest some volunteer hours as required, but my college expenses would be covered. I hung up the phone with teary eyes. I couldn’t believe my dream of teaching was becoming a reality. I continued studying hard through the next three years.

In 2017 I graduated from a medical school and started to train the seniors for recovery as a therapist in the Brookdale Lake Senior Living Center where I met Hoffner, who had lived there for roughly the past decade, for the first time.

Hoffner, a lady of 104 years old now, grew up in Chicago and worked as a telephone operator for Bell Company for more than four decades. She never married or had children, but she enjoyed beach vacations and driving her small blue car touring all over the country.

She loved sports and was kind to everyone she met. She watched every Chicago Cubs game on a TV in her room and also enjoyed watching “MASH” runs. She stayed active, walking several blocks to the grocery store multiple times a week and going on walks to have a look at the neighbor’s dogs. She was known for carrying candies — Heath bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and dark chocolate — in her walker.   She shared her candies with everyone she met, but she always kept some for me.

I remembered that afternoon I and one of my patients were figuring out when the meal was served when Hoffner invited us to eat supper with her in the dining area. Since then, we three ate dinner together almost every night and Hoffner started calling me grandson.

One night two months ago, I carelessly told Hoffner over dinner that I was going skydiving in Ottawa. When Hoffner said she wanted to go, too, I thought she meant as an observer. “No, no, no, I want to jump out of a plane,” Hoffner said. My heart sank because I knew clearly what it meant to jump from an airplane at about 13,500 feet high. It might injure her.

But she made up her mind and started to do everything to prepare for it. She went to the doctor to have a check and asked me to make a training plan. With her walker she kept training every day.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落形状语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Once in the summer holidays, a brother and a sister, Sammy and Marie, visited their grandparents on their farm. Sammy took his slingshot (弹弓) to play in the woods. He practiced hard for many days but all his efforts were in vain. No matter how much he tried, he could never hit the target.

At lunchtime, Grandma called out, ”Sammy, it’s lunchtime!” Getting a little disappointed, he headed back for the lunch. While walking back, Sammy noticed his grandma’s pet. It was a cute, little duck. Out of excitement he took his slingshot and aimed at the duck. This time, his shot hit the target and it hit the poor duck on its head and killed it. He was shocked and frightened at the same time.

In the extreme fear, he hid the dead duck in the pile of woods. Marie, his younger sister, had seen it all from the window but she decided not to confront him.

The next day, Grandma said, “Marie, let’s wash the dishes.” Hearing this, Marie immediately said, “But Grandma, Sammy told me he wanted to help you do the household chores.” As soon as she said this, she turned to Sammy and whispered, “Remember the duck?” Sammy got anxious, knowing that his sister knew his secret about the duck. If he did not obey her, she would tell their grandparents about it. So without uttering a single word, he did the dishes. Later, in the evening, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go for fishing. On hearing this, Grandma said, ”I am sorry but I need Marie to stay with me and help make a supper.” Marie turned to Grandma and said, “Well, that’s all right. Sammy told me he wanted to help you." She again whispered to Sammy, “Remember the duck?” Hearing this, Sammy couldn’t say a word, just standing there angrily. So Marie went with her grandfather for fishing and poor Sammy had to stay with his grandma.

After his wife passed away, Stewart had to take on all the parental responsibilities, and it also meant paying for all the expenses alone. When his twin sons’ 7th birthday came, he couldn’t buy them the gifts they wanted. When his daughter was laughed at because of her worn-out shoes, he couldn’t buy her a pair of new shoes immediately. Stewart felt sorry that he could not give his children a good life, so he tried his best to look after them well and worked more than one shift (换班) a day to give them as happy a life as possible.

When Christmas came that year, Stewart tried to prepare the children’s favorite food because he had no extra money for individuals gifts. Gregory, Sean and Lucy were disappointed but they didn’t want to ruin the day. After having dinner together, the kids went outside to build a huge snowman and had a snowball fight with their dad. That was their family tradition on Christmas Eve Many years passed, and Stewart’s children had their own families. Although they all lived in the same city, they seldom came back and celebrated Christmas with Stewart because they were always busy working.

Stewart would sit in a chair alone, recalling their happy time in the past. One year, Stewart once more sent his children an invitation to spend Christmas together. “Maybe they’ll accept my invitation this year,” he thought.

Stewart waited nervously on Christmas Eve, but no one appeared. Stewart became sad. Just then he heard a short knock on the door. He answered the door excitedly, only to find his grandson Tim—Sean’s son—alone at the door.

“What a surprise!” Stewart smiled. “How did you get here alone?”

Tim said sadly, “Even on Christmas Eve, my parents ignore me. They’re too busy with work. I know how much you love Christmas, so I decided to walk here.”

To cheer Tim up, Stewart decided to get dressed and build a snowman with him. The two walked outside even though Stewart’s doctor warned he would suffer a heart attack if he stayed outdoors for long in cold weather.

It was around eight o’clock, just past the frenzy (疯狂) of the New York rush hour when a subway train rattled down the track into 14th Street station. Emma, a senior high school student, was late for dinner with her friend Pete.

As Emma was hurrying out of the station something caught her eye. Something like a doll was lying on the floor. She was puzzled. Why would a child leave a doll on the ground? But she continued up the stairs to the exit. She glanced back one more time, astonished to find its legs moved.

She ran back down the stairs and realized that the doll was in fact a puppy, wrapped in a dark sweatshirt, with its tiny paws sticking out. It seemed like it was a newborn, maybe several days or so old. Emma could hardly believe what she was seeing. She couldn’t understand how a baby dog had been left on the floor, or who could have left it. The little puppy was very quiet with big and wide eyes.

Emma yelled out, “Whose dog is it?” but almost everyone ignored her. She did get the attention of one woman, but she didn’t speak English. The woman didn’t really understand what Emma was saying, even when she was trying to point to the puppy. “She probably thought I may have been a little crazy,” Emma murmured.

This was the time when not everyone had a mobile phone and Emma was afraid to pick up the puppy in case it was hurt. So Emma ran up the stairs to the street to a payphone and called 911.

“I found a puppy,” she blurted out (脱口而出). Then she told the police where she was located and ran back to check if the puppy was still OK. She waited for what seemed like ages. She thought they’re probably not believing her, so she needed someone else to help. That’s when she thought of Pete. Pulling out a quarter from her pocket, she ran back to the payphone to call him.
