1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.

My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.

I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Having held the interschool (校际) story tell g championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate (候选人) to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.

Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly be the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited (自负的). I was so proud that I ignored the importance of practicing for the contest.

A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse (排练) for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage

in the audience,” she added.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”

This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I event old Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script (讲稿) .I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.

The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was crowded with people. My schoolteachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms (手掌) sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker said as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone would get really bored with listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.

Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.

Jenny picked it up and wanted to return it to Lee, but she couldn’t catch up with him. When she arrived home, Jenny put it on, thinking about the magic. She was surprised that it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the minor, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magical.

The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker ask cd who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved, Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say something, there was a shout “She’s stolen in y watch!” Lee said angrily. “It went missing at school yesterday.”

4 . Todd Bol, a retired businessman, could never have expected that a wooden container he built in his front yard one day would have the global impact it does today.

Bol built a dollhouse-size structure that looked like a schoolhouse on a post and he put it in his yard as a free community library to remember his mother, who was a book lover and school teacher. Bol’s design gave birth to Little Free Library (LFL), a nonprofit organization that seeks to place small, accessible book exchange boxes in neighborhoods around the world. The concept is simple: Neighbors are invited to share a book, leave a book, or both. Today, there are over 50,000 of these libraries registered in 70 countries.

Almost everyone can register with LFL and start a library as long as the person keeps it in good shape and makes sure that book materials are appropriate for his/her neighborhood. Library owners can create their own library boxes; therefore, the libraries are usually unique in appearance, and there seems to be no limit to the possibilities. One library in California was built out of a used wine container; another in Texas had tiny stairs and bright colored walls. Once registered, libraries are assigned a number at LFL’s website. The LFL Index lists the locations of all libraries with GPS coordinates (坐标) and other information. Owners receive a sign saying “Little Free Library”.

People say they have been attracted to pick up a book when walking by a Little Free Library, out of curiosity and because it’s convenient. Some sidewalk librarians say they have met more neighbors since having a little library in their front yard. Bol is also most proud of the way Little Free Library is bringing communities together. “It’s started a neighborhood exchange. It gets people talking and more comfortable with their neighbors,” he says. “This leads to them helping each other.”

1. What does the underlined word “design” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.A community center.B.A dollhouse on a post.
C.A book exchange box.D.A nonprofit organization.
2. What can we learn about the operation of a Little Free Library?
A.There is no limit to the selection of books.
B.The library can come in any shape and color.
C.The library needs to hire many professional librarians.
D.The owner must first be assigned a number from the LFL website.
3. What can be inferred about Little Free Library?
A.It helps improve GPS functions.B.It connects libraries around the world.
C.It makes reading accessible to the poor.D.It helps restore human connections.

6 . The riches of the natural world aren’t spread evenly across the globe. Places like the tropical Andes (赤道安第斯山脉) in South America are packed with unique species, no place else to be found on Earth. Previously, the main explanation for the biological riches concentrated in places like the Amazon Basin was that they were such places where new species evolved at a faster rate than other parts of the world. But now, new research on bird evolution may turn that assumption on its head. Instead, it supports the idea that areas with fewer species actually tend to produce new species faster.

The researchers say the biodiversity cold spots are generally found in harsher (更严酷的) environments featuring freezing, dry and unstable conditions. Though the researchers have found these locations with few bird species tend to produce new ones at high rates, they fail to accumulate many species because the unstable conditions frequently make the new life forms die out.

The more well-known hot spots, by contrast, have accumulated their large numbers of species by being warm, hospitable and relatively stable. Indeed, the researchers have found that the countless bird species that call the Amazon home tend to be older in evolutionary terms. That actually accounts for higher species richness there.

“Our results suggest that these hots pots for biodiversity are not hot spots for the evolution of new species,” says Elizabeth Derryberry, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Tennessee. “New species do form in places like the Amazon, just not as frequently as in more extreme environments.”

The researchers managed to collect 1,940 samples (样本) representing 1,287 of the 1,306 bird species from South America. Their analysis revealed that the best predictor of whether an area would produce new species at a high rate was how many species lived there, rather than climate or geographic features like mountains. Species rich areas tended to produce new species more slowly.

On a practical level, the study’s findings add new urgency for stopping destroying ecosystems that may look dry and bare, because they may actually be nature’s hothouses for the evolution of new species.

1. What is the previous explanation for biodiversity in the Amazon Basin?
A.Its species’ strong survival abilities.
B.The immigration of foreign species.
C.The rapid evolution of new species.
D.Its vast living space for new species.
2. Why do the bird species in the Amazon tend to be older?
A.There’s less competition and more chances.
B.It constantly attracts new species to come.
C.It had extreme environments a long time ago.
D.The environment there is stable and favorable.
3. The study’s findings suggest that we should ________.
A.protect harsh ecosystems
B.help species in hot areas live longer
C.develop species-rich environments
D.limit species in biodiversity cold spots
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Bird species prefer to live in harsher ecosystems.
B.Species poor areas may produce new species faster.
C.Tropical areas are home to large numbers of species.
D.Hot areas are more attractive to species than cold areas.

THE TEACHER’S HAND

Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment—to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.

Most of the class might be considered economically disadvantaged, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her student’s art. And they were.

But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of misery, weakness and unhappiness. His father died in a car accident and the driver wasn’t turned up yet. When first introduced to the teacher, the tiny shy boy greeted her in a timid tone, with his head down. She felt as if her heart was broken when he hesitated back and forth, glancing now and then at other kids playing games. She promised that she would help him out. As other children played on the playground, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side, one hand in hers. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.

Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.
