1 . Eyes can speak
Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.
The same is true in our daily life. If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you.
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive.
However, when two people are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener’s eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking.
Actually, eye contact should be made based on specific relationships and situations.
A.That’s what normal eye contact is all about. |
B.But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex |
C.Therefore, continuous eye contact is limited to lovers only. |
D.On the contrary, it will give him away. |
E.After all, nobody likes to be stared at for quite a long time. |
F.Do you have such kind of experience? |
G.If nothing goes wrong, you will feel annoyed at being stared at that way. |
2 . Han Tianheng picked up a carving knife at the age of 6 and never put it down. Today, the 79 year-old artist, one of China’s most respected living masters of seal carving(印章雕刻), calligraphy and Chinese painting, still remembers the incident the first time he held a knife in his hand.
“I cut my thumb badly and was scared by the bloody sight,” he said, adding that his mother applied ashes because she couldn’t afford to take him to a hospital. “The cut left a scar, which is still clear today.”
An eye for an eye and blood for blood, the incident didn’t set him back. Instead, it aroused his passion for the ancient art form. He was determined to pursue a path that would lead to a career in seal carving. Han said.
The journey of art exploration was a little bumpy for the young man in his pursue for excellence, and his seal works were seriously criticized by a famous old painter.
Most would have crumbled under the criticism, not Han. It made him even more determined. After six months’ hard work, he visited the painter again.
“This time, he asked me to carve a seal for him. This was positive affirmation,” Han said. “Praise is candy and criticism is medicine. We can live without candy, but cannot live without medicine when ill.”
Han rose to fame during the early 1960s famous for bird and insect seal art. Han’s seals are an essential ending part on the paintings of a long list of well-known artists.
“A seal for a good painting is like the buttons for an haute couture(高档女子时装). An experienced tailor always knows how to choose buttons that matches the whole style. What’s more, a good seal carver should keep his own style, and at the same time go well with the painting’s style.” he said.

On New Year’s Day I went to a stamp exhibition, that proved to be a unique experience.
I arrived at the exhibition with my precious stamp album, eager and exciting. Crowds of stamp lovers had gathered here. I joined in them and studied the stamps one by one. I was deep absorbed in the artists’ delicate design and wanted to learn more. Then, some of us got together in twos and threes to share our collections, chatting cheerfully about the stamps and stories behind it like old friends. Time passes quickly and it was time to say goodbye to these friends. We took pictures together but made promises to meet again.
I had great time today. Not only did I appreciate beautiful stamp, but also I made new friends of the same interest.

You and your parents will be very happy if you can be friend. Here are some way to have a good talk with them. Find a good time to talk, like when you’re eating with dinner, going out for a walk and watching TV. Tell them something you’re interested in, or ask them about their lives when they are young. They love to talk about our past! Meet them face to face and listen to them carefully. Be honesty, and your parents well trust you more.
8 . When Matty Sallin was working on a degree in art and technology at New York University, he got an interesting assignment in electronics class: Create something for the household. He decided to create an alarm clock.
“Everybody has to deal with these every day, and they are extremely unpleasant!" he says. He asked different people what they’d like to wake up to instead of a clanging, noisy alarm. A lot of them said, "The smell of bacon.”
So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon rather than sound to wake someone up. He explains, “There’s no danger of burning, because it uses halogen light bulbs(卤素灯泡)instead of a flame for cooking and turns off automatically after ten minutes.”
Just a few easy steps are required to set the “alarm.”
“What you do is to put a couple of frozen pieces of bacon in the night before,” says Sallin. “If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slow cook for ten minutes under the halogen bulbs,” he says. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the pig nose.
“So instead of an alarm or a beep or a radio, you smell yourself awake,” says Sallin. “Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it.”
When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions. “I wanted to make an elevator in my back yard and a special tree house,” he says. “But I never really thought I’d be called an inventor!”

9 . It was realized that if an apparatus (装置) could be designed to send out radio waves all the time and record the echoes from any approaching airplanes, it would be a wonderful method of defense in the last war.
Scientists set about solving the problem and radar was invented. An apparatus was made which sent out waves in pulses, and the presence of a distant airplane was shown on the screen (this is what we have in a television set). In this way radar station could detect the approach of enemy aircraft.
After the war radar was put to peaceful uses. It is now installed at airports to guide airplanes down safely in fog. It is fitted to ships so that they are warned of obstructions (障碍物) ahead, such as icebergs. It guides ships into port. It provided airplanes and ships with a magic eye, with which they can see far into the distance, in the dark or in fog.

10 . My brother and I often fight with each other over small things. One day our father said to us, “Tomorrow we will take part in the Ray Home Sports Day. Both of you must go with me. Perhaps you can learn something from those children.” My brother laughed, “Dad, Ray is a home for physically disabled children. What can we learn from them?”
“You will see,” our father said.
Our father works as a volunteer at Ray. The children there have problems with their hands, speech, walking or hearing. Every day, he spends hours helping them to move or exercise their legs or arms.
The following day, he took us to Ray Home. When we got there, we found a nice place to sit down. Finally, the sports began. There was a 50-meter race to see who could run fastest. All the runners were physically disabled. As the race started, all the children moved as fast as they could. Just then, one of the girls fell over and hurt her leg. She began to cry at the top of her voice.
All the children stopped to help the poor girl. Then they all held hands and finished the race together. My brother and I were surprised to see this: the children weren’t interested in winning the race-they were more interested in helping each other to finish the race.
