One particularly cold Saturday in January, I was supposed to take our dog out for a walk, but it was so cold that I didn’t want to go outside. Instead, I just opened the door and let the dog out by himself. I kept an eye on him to make sure he would come back inside.
However, another neighborhood dog quickly ran past our house, and our dog sped after to catch him. I hurriedly went to grab my coat so I could follow my dog, and then I rushed outside. Unfortunately, I was already too late, and my dog was nowhere in sight. I walked a few blocks, but I was unable to find him.
Depressed, I returned home. My mother was standing at the door waiting, and she asked me what had happened. “I know I was supposed to walk our dog,” I admitted, “but I thought he would be able to go outside and come back by himself. Now he’s gone and I can’t find him anywhere.”
My mother was very angry with me; she said I should have been more responsible. She decided to help by making some signs. The signs read, “Lost: A big black dog. Please call us right away” and she printed our phone number on the bottom. “Okay, Darrell,” she said, as she handed over those signs, “now go post these on all the street posts.”
My sister and I grabbed the signs and we posted them along our street as well as along the surrounding streets. The whole time, I was incredibly sad and worried about our dog. All I could think about was how cold it was and how cold our dog must be. My sister wanted to go home, so I told her I’d walk her home, but then keep looking for the dog myself.

5 . We all know your student loan will only go so far. So what can you do to save those pennies (便士) and eventually a pretty substantial amount in the long run? Here is some advice from L&S Editor Marianne Lampon.
FOOD
—Buy the supermarket’s Own Brand products: When it comes to items such as cheese, milk, and more, the Own Brand products can be bought much cheaper but without lowering the quality.
—Coupons (优惠券), coupons, coupons: It’s really worth hitting the Internet for some extra coupons, especially for meals out with a big group. Keep an eye on restaurants that offer a cheaper Set Menu or that do 2 for 1 deals on main courses.
STUDENT-ONLY OFFERS
—Fresher’s Fair: Say hello to free pens, bottle openers and a bunch of things you never knew you needed. Freshers get involved!
—Student discount in stores and online: Showing your University ID card will save you at least 10% with a lot of online or offline businesses. As a result, you’ll feel slightly less guilty about buying those new pair of Nike’s.
FASHION
The shift from summer to autumn can be a sad time, but it needn’t hurt your wallet!
—Accessories (配饰): Basically, wear your summer clothes with warm and comfortable accessories. How about those shorts? Just team them with a pair of tights and you’re good to go.
—Charity shops: The perfect way to stay on-trend and at a super affordable price.
So there it is! Sticking to some of these ideas will really help save some money in the long run, proving a little really does go a long way.

6 . DNA testing is one of modern medicine’s most significant breakthroughs. Today, anyone can receive personalized information about their genes (基因) and ancestry with just a little saliva (唾液). Now, a Seattle-based company is working to bring equally deep analysis to the trillions of proteins within our bodies.
Nautilus Biotechnology, a company founded in 2016 by Seattle’s Sujal Patel and the San Francisco Bay Area’s Parag Mallick, is developing a device to identify and count 95% of the different types of proteins in a biological sample.
Human cells can contain roughly 20,000 different types of proteins, with crucial functions ranging from digestion to disease protection. Each cell has a varying amount of each protein. The company wants to measure the key machinery (机制) inside cells with a level of detail that has never been done before. Existing tools, it says. can only measure up to 8% of the different types of proteins in blood samples.
So why count proteins at all? Research shows healthy cells and diseased cells have differing amounts and forms of each protein. For example, cancer cells may have more of Protein A than Protein B. Knowing that might help in two ways: First, doctors could look for higher Protein A levels to detect cancer early. Second, researchers could better design drugs to target Protein A.
Nautilus says such protein measurements, which are unique to every person and change throughout people’s lives, will not only help doctors identify more specific forms of disease but also help pharmaceutical (制药) companies find more precise drugs with fewer side effects.
While other companies also are building new protein analysis machines, experts and prospective customers have expressed excitement over Nautilus’s approach. Mallick, chief scientist of Nautilus and the brain behind its technology, is confident: “It’s not every day when you get…to work on something. That’s the opportunity to change all of biology.”

8 . Procrastination (拖延) makes people live under constant stress. Making changes will lead to positive results, like relieving stress and increasing the quality of work, family time and joy.
◆Acknowledge the need to change.
If you’re a master procrastinator, stop making excuses and acknowledge the reasons why procrastination is bad.
◆Identify and understand your feelings.
You may feel fearful about the size of a task, proud of your productivity, and anxious about your time.
◆
For master procrastinators, the idea of working too early on a task is stupid. But remember: Just because you start working on something doesn’t mean you have to finish. By starting, you get the juices flowing, allowing you to get more done than you anticipated. Additionally, you increase the quality of your work because every time you revise your thing, it gets better.
◆Use the five-minute rule.
If you find yourself with some free time and you need to convince yourself to start working on a difficult task, follow the five-minute rule. Force yourself to work on a task for just five minutes, with the understanding that you can quit after five minutes if you like.
So, remember: Fighting procrastination is a life-long battle. But it’s a winnable one.
A.But how to? |
B.Work on stuff earlier. |
C.What are the possible results? |
D.These emotions are quite natural. |
E.Pay special attention to the quality of your work. |
F.This simple mental trick is usually just to get you started. |
G.Otherwise, you won’t be convinced there’s a need to change. |
9 . On July 14, 2017, Maryam Mirzakhani, Stanford professor of mathematics and the first female winner of the Fields Medal in Mathematics, died at the age of 40.
The news was especially hard-hitting for a generation of younger academics who have always held Maryam as a role model whose example is helping redefine women’s status in science and especially mathematics. What was fun was that
Maryam always tried to avoid the media’s spotlight. Her modesty (谦虚) and simplicity despite being the first woman to gain such high status in the world of mathematics — winning what’s often called the “Nobel Prize of math” — stood out to those who knew her.
Maryam originally wanted to be a writer, a passion of hers that never faded away even during her postgraduate studies. However, she found an even greater joy in how rewarding it felt to solve mathematical problems. As a student, she was the first female member of Iran’s national team to participate in the International Math Olympiad (IMO), and she won two gold medals in two years — still a record.
She received her bachelor’s degree in Iran and later studied at Harvard. In 2014, Maryam was recognized with the Fields Medal, the highest-ranking award in mathematics. Her work focused on curved surfaces like spheres (球体). Her achievements have applications in other scientific fields including engineering and material science. Unfortunately, at that time she was already tackling the breast cancer.
Maryam’s legend (传奇) may continue to grow after her early death. Still only 20 percent of full-time math teachers at U. S. universities are women. The example of a woman who rose to the top of this still very male field may help inspire math’s next generation.
In the same way people think of Marie Curie or Jane Goodall as scientific pioneers, Maryam Mirzakhani will go down in history as a trailblazer as well as a mathematical genius.
