1 . 2023 Hot List: The Best New Restaurants in the World
Place des Fetes — New York City
This famous wine bar provides a spot with a rare sweet and warm atmosphere. For date night, go to the bar with views of the open kitchen, or fill up the large table in the back with a group and taste the entire item menu. Either way, do not miss the famous mushroom soup.
Le Doyenne — Saint — Vrain, France
Australian chefs James Henry and Shaun Kelly transformed the former stables (马厩) of a 19th-century private estate into a working farm, restaurant, and guesthouse driven by the principles of regenerative agriculture. More than one hundred varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs make their way into Henry’s cooking after being carefully nurtured by Kelly.
Mi Compa Chava — Mexico City
Almost everyone eating here is devoted to fixing last night’s damage from drunkenness and getting a head start on creating today’s. On the sidewalk, crowds of locals and tourists alike line up for fisherman Salvador Orozco’s creative takes on Sinaloa and Baja seafood. Anything from the raw half of the menu is a sure bet, though cooked dishes like fish can help fill out a meal.
Vilas — Bangkok
Can a dish inspired by a Spanish recipe using Japanese ingredients (原料) still be considered Thai? For Chef Prin Polsuk, one of Bangkok’s most famous Thai chefs, it most certainly can. At his latest restaurant, a small dining room at the base of Bangkok’s hulalongkorn’s 1897 journey around Europe and the foreign ingredients and landmark King Power Mahanakhon Tower, he draws inspiration from King Chulalongkorn’s 1897 journey around Europe and the foreign ingredients and cooking techniques he added to the royal cookbooks.

Jim stared at the ground and sighed in disappointment. Players from the opposing team raced past Jim, celebrating their shocking victory. They’d scored the game-winning goal just seconds before the end of the game.
“Just one word to describe a loss like that,” Jim mumbled to his teammate Devin.
“Terrible!” Devin sighed. “It was a tough one.” He trotted (小步快跑) toward the middle of the field to shake hands with the winning team. Jim walked slowly behind Devin. He unhappily slapped hands with the winners, then stopped to shut his eyes as the autumn air cooled his sweaty face.
“Terrible,” he repeated to himself as he sat on the bench and pulled his jacket on. “Let’s get some hot chocolate and watch the next game,” Devin said. There were eight teams in the YMCA league, so games would go on all morning. “Sorry. I’m heading home,” Jim said, “I’ve had enough soccer for today.”
As he reached the gate, Jim glanced back to see the next two teams take the field. They were jumping and shouting, excited to play. “That was us a little while ago, before we were discouraged.” Jim thought.
So why we lost the game at last? Jim asked himself. How did such a well-played game end up with such a terrible result? It was still clear in his head: Jim had the ball deep on the Jets’ side of the field, looking for Devin or another teammate to pass to. His team had outplayed the Jets for most of the game, but failed within the last seconds.
Jim let out a deep breath. The morning was growing warmer. Perfect for soccer. Jim looked back toward the field. He couldn’t see it, but he could hear the excited voices as the game continued.

5 . Collaboration happens more often than we realize.
Listening
Giving and receiving honest feedback
It’s important that everyone is able to be straightforward when giving and receiving feedback. When you share your opinion and someone else disagrees with it, try not to take it personally.
This could be someone who works in a different position at your job, someone with a different background from you, or someone who’s an expert in the topic you’re seeking information about. This can help to start more dynamic conversations and introduce new ideas you may not have come up with if you were working on your own or with a group of like-minded people.
Collaboration may not always be easy.

6 . Valley
Placed in Amsterdam’s business center, Valley, designed by MVRDV is a mixed-use project that includes offices, shops, apartments, and cultural areas. It actually includes three connected towers that reach a height of up to 100m whose design was inspired by mountainous landscapes. The building’s uneven appearance ensures that no two apartments are the same, creating a number of completely unique housing units.
111 West 57th Street
Also known as Steinway Tower, it is a super-tall residential skyscraper (摩天大楼). The main part of the building is an 84-story, 435-meter tower. Designed by SHoP Architects, the extremely narrow tower — officially the thinnest in the world rises over New York City. Remaining at the base is the 16-story Steinway Building, a former Steinway & Sons store completed in 1925, which at first carried the address 111 West 57th Street.
NV Tower
It was designed by A&A Architects and reaches a height of 106 m in Sofia, Bulgaria. The building’s design is partly inspired by natural crystals (水晶). To strengthen the crystal theme, each floor of the building bears the name of a single crystal and is designed in the same color as the crystal. The building is multifunctional, including offices, homes, restaurants, shops, roof gardens and underground parking.
Premier Tower
It was designed by Elenberg Fraser and reaches a height of 246 m in Melbourne, Australia. The skyscraper’s overall design is a homage (致敬) to one of Beyonce’s music videos called “Ghost”. The Premier Tower has set a new standard in residential design. Within the building, you will find 796 apartments and 172 hotel rooms spread across 77 uniquely designed stories.

8 . In late 2022, Matthew Pittman and Eric Haley carried out three studies on Americans aged 18-65 to test how people in different situations react to ads differently.
The control group in each study was asked to just look at an ad. The second group had to memorize a nine-digit number and then look at an ad. The third group looked through their Instagram updates for 30 seconds before looking at an ad. The first study used an ad for a meal preparation service, the second was for ice cream and the third was for coffee beans. The ad photos and introductions were the same for everyone in each group, with only the number of likes being different. Participants may see an ad with a few hundred likes or tens of thousands of likes. After viewing the ad, each participant rated how willing they would be to buy the product. The group that used Instagram first was the most likely to want to buy the product when there were lots of likes.
In the second study, participants were asked why they wanted to buy the product and those in the control group gave simple, reasonable answers for their choice. “I was thinking of the taste of the ice cream and how delicious it would be.” Or “I like the ad. It’s simple and clean. It gets straight to the point.” However, most of those who had viewed social media content for 30 seconds gave answers that made no sense. For example, some gave one-word answers like “food” or “plate”. Researchers refer to this as “cognitive overload”.
Then the researchers further developed their study of the ad for coffee beans. And they discovered that those who often drank coffee carefully considered many factors, like the type of the beans and their country of production. So even when these people were in a mental fog, they were not convinced by ads with a large number of likes.
By understanding how they might be influenced by social media in unconscious ways, consumers can be more thoughtful and hopefully won’t buy a product they don’t need.
1. What can be inferred from the three studies?A.Social media greatly influences consumer behavior. |
B.Ads for food are more popular than other types of ads. |
C.People using social media choose more useful products. |

B.One’s attention can be easily directed. |
C.One shows little interest in communication. |
D.The brain has too much information to process. |
A.Social media is a valuable advertising tool. |
B.Product knowledge reduces the outside influence on buying. |
C.Consumers with health concerns are careful about shopping. |
D.People with a high quality of life hardly buy unnecessary things. |
A.Focus on yourself: you can make good choices |
B.Click on more ads to choose the most cost-effective goods |
C.Keep up with the times to improve your shopping experience |
D.Buy without thinking: you are being influenced by social media |
9 . Brooklyn is home to an encouraging handcycling (手摇自行车运动) team, whose members are all athletes with disabilities.
You can hear the happiness in Maurice Evans’ voice as he moves through the hills and paths of Prospect Park. He is part of a handcycle team called Prevailers Sports, an organization founded in 2018 out of a love for adaptive sports. At 55 years old, Evans is hoping to win 12 medals by his 60th birthday. “When I cross that finish line, I feel like I’ve really achieved something very few people can do,” he said.
Peneliope Richards is the captain of the team. She says, “There’s no other team like us here in Brooklyn. We want to make sure that handcycling is present in the community that we love, and people get to know more about us as they quickly pass by us in the park.”
The Prevailers take part in a variety of races, and most have been accepted to the New YorkCity Marathon. “It’s like a family. We get along; we support each other. Some of us make it in some races. Some of us don’t, but we still cheer each other on,” says team member Trisa Harris.
One of the biggest challenges, team members say, is finding a place to store their handcycles and getting them to the places they need. That’s when a local company stepped in to help. Roadway Moving, founded in the Bronx, is supporting the storage and transportation of the equipment to make their training and racing possible.
Their other difficulty is finding able-bodied volunteers to help on the big days. Still, despite the difficulty, the team is doing what it was created to do — growing, training, and finally succeeding.
“I think everyone should get out and run a marathon, walk a marathon, and crawl (爬) a marathon,” says Evans with a smile. “Just get your marathon done!”
1. Which of the following can best describe Evans?A.He is selfless and open-minded. |

What my father wore embarrassed me! I wanted him to dress like a doctor or lawyer, but he always dressed like my father, getting up before dawn every day to make breakfast for my mother and me.
We lived in South Texas, where my father worked as a repairman. He often wore a pair of jeans and a shirt, keeping his pencils, glasses and wrenches (扳手) in his breast pocket. His boots were those with steel toes that made them difficult to pull off his feet, which I sometimes helped him with when he returned from repairing cars — his job that also shamed me.
I blamed the way he dressed. I felt that my classmates laughed at me because they’d seen him mowing lawns (修剪草坪) in cut-off jeans and black boots. My classmates’ families paid men to beautify their lawns, while their fathers travelled in the bay wearing lemon-yellow sweaters and expensive shoes.
He preferred clothes that allowed him the freedom to move under cars. So even when taking part in a school trip with me, he was dressed in his repairman’s suit. On the school bus to the campsite, all students on the bus happily chatted with their parents except me, who lowered the head, avoiding spotting my classmates’ mocking glance (讥笑的眼光) or hearing their jokes, which I thought was about nothing else but what my father wore.
I regretted telling my parents the school trip, and I was very angry why my mother had no spare time while my father happened to have a vacation. But my father failed to read my mind. He was very happy, whistling a tune along the way.
Though my father didn’t sense my bad mood, the school bus seemed as sad as I was. It drove more and more slowly and finally it stopped on the roadside. The driver got out to check the bus but found nothing wrong. Students and parents on the bus began to whisper about what was happening, worried that the delay might spoil the journey.
