Dear fellow students,

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much.
One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to be punished when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behaviour.
But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the room I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy?” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students communicated with each other.
After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.
Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me.” I thought. Then, I summoned up (鼓起) my courage to stand up, worried about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around.

4 . The homelessness popularity across the Pacific Northwest is now going to be disposed of in a unique kind way by two Seattle-born non-profit organizations. Through The BLOCK Project, tiny sustainable homes are being built in the backyards of the charitable volunteers to be delivered to the homeless people of the neighborhood.
Architect and founder of The BLOCK Project, Rex Hohlbein joined Facing Homelessness, another non-profit organization to launch the collaborative project. The latter organization has the responsibility for finding land in the household backyards, on which Hohlbein’s The BLOCK Project will build small, low-emission housing. The name of the company and the project comes from Hohlbein’s pioneering design of the tiny sustainable houses. To support their initiative, thousands of Seattle residents have already offered their house backyards to the project. The government also stepped in to make the entire process as legally convenient as possible.
Seattle has been facing a double problem of having expensive houses on the one hand, and being a large homeless community on the other. In such context, Hohlbein realized that willingness of kindly neighbors could provide a much better and quicker solution than a long waiting for state allowances (补贴) or government programs. The good idea of the architect is now getting proved by continuous construction of thousands of tiny backyard homes across Seattle.
The long-term goal of the project is to copy the globally changing definition of lodging (暂住) brought about by Airbnb. According to Hohlbein, in his childhood, it was absurd to think about hosting complete strangers in any regular household just in exchange for little money, especially with the risk factors of a night-time stay. But the Airbnb has made the concept as casual as it can get. Through The BLOCK Project, Hohlbein aims to copy the same kind of “cultural shift” with future sustainable housing, starting from the grass-roots level of local neighborhoods.

7 . It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate?
Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.
Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration.
However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away.
It’s hard to convince my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.”
“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.”

8 . Fifteen years ago, when darkness used to fall in Yobe Nkosi, a remote village in northern Malawi, children did their school homework by candlelight: There was no electricity. But that started to change in 2006, when villager Colrerd Nkosi finished secondary school in Mzimba some 40 kilometers away, and returned home, and found he could no longer live without power.
Aged 23 at the time, Nkosi soon figured out that a small river past the house where he grew up had just enough force to push the pedals on his bicycle. He created a generator (发电机) that brought power into his home. Word spread quickly among brick houses and neighbors began paying regular visits to charge their mobile phones. “I started getting requests for electricity and decided to upgrade,” said Nkosi.
With no previous training, he turned an old fridge compressor (压缩机) into a water-powered turbine and put it in a nearby river, generating electricity for six households. Today, the village is supplied by a bigger turbine.
The users pay no fee for the power but give Nkosi some money for maintenance — slightly more than $1 per household per month. “The electricity is basically free,” Nkosi said, speaking in local Chichewa. He admitted that the maintenance income was too small to cover repair costs, which he mainly funded from his own pocket.
Despite the challenges, he was determined to expand his mini electricity network to surrounding areas. “Once more villages and schools have electricity, people will no longer cut down trees for charcoal (木炭),” he said. “Students will have a lot more time to study.”
As dusk settled over Kasangazi Primary School, groups of learners rushed into a classroom for a night-time study session. “Before we had electricity here, we used to use candles to study,” said student Gift Mfune, sorting through a pile of textbooks on his desk. “Now, we all have no excuse but to pass our examinations,” he laughed. Courtesy of Nkosi, the building is the only school with power out of 17 others servicing the area.

9 . Known as “soft gold”, Gambiered Canton Gauze(香云纱) is the perfect silk fabric (布料) for cheongsam (旗袍). It feels smooth and comfortable, easy to wash and dry, and is also good for people’s health.
Today, Gambiered Canton Gauze is the only silk fabric in the world that’s still hand-dyed (手工染) and using natural plants. It gets its color from shuliang, a yam (薯蓣) plant growing in Shunde, Guangdong, which can help fight against bacteria (细菌) and bad smells.
The skill of dyeing Gambiered Canton Gauze has a long-lasting history of more than 500 years. In 2008, it was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家非物质文化遗产).
Mr. Ouyang is an inheritor (继承人) of the Gambiered Canton Gauze dyeing technique. He started learning the technique in 2017.
The dyeing process includes 30 steps. It can take up to six months and is done by hand with materials from nature. “The plant shuliang, river mud, sunshine and grass all play key roles in dyeing,” Mr. Ouyang said.
To dye the fabric, workers put it in shuliang juice and let it dry on the grass. They repeat this many times until it turns brownish-yellow. Then, they put river mud on it to help shuliang react fully. After washing and drying again, the fabric turns black!
Mastering the technique is a tricky (棘手的) task, according to Mr. Ouyang, who said the most challenging part is controlling the density (浓度) of shuliang juice. “ Too much may cause color loss, and too little may not lead to a dark enough fabric,” he said. “Better control of density comes after many failures.”
Passing on the craft is also challenging. The job can be exhausting as workers have to be at work under the sun for eight hours each day. Therefore, only a few people work in the industry, and skilled masters are getting older as fewer young people take part.
Considering this, Mr. Ouyang has worked harder to develop the traditional craft by combining other dyeing techniques such as tie-dye (扎染) and batik (蜡染) and cooperating with famous fashion designers. They are turning the silk into both traditional and fashionable clothes that are popular worldwide. In this way, according to Mr. Ouyang, the craft can stay alive and even draw more people to join the industry.
