1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When Paula was fifteen, she found out something that surprised her a lot: She was adopted (收养的). This news was like a sudden lightning in the sky, showing her a new path she had never thought about before. It made her very curious about her real family and where she came from.

At first, the idea of being adopted was very hard for Paula to understand, like trying to climb a big mountain all by herself. But it also made her want to learn more about who she was. Each step she took was like going on a new adventure, sometimes making her feel scared but also excited. She was looking for her family’s stories, and her wish to find her roots (根) was like a bright flashlight, helping her see the way.

Paula decided to take a DNA test, which felt like using a special key to open a secret door to her family’s past. When the test showed that she was connected to a distant cousin, it made her very happy, like finding a treasure on a treasure hunt. But when there were no more clues (线索) to follow, Paula felt very sad, as if a big cloud had covered the sun and made everything dark. She felt like crying because she didn’t know what to do next.

But even when things looked bad, Paula didn't give up. She became stronger and more determined, like a superhero who keeps going even when it's hard. She thought that if she kept trying, she would find the answers she wanted.

Paula had a best friend named Heather, and they had a very strong friendship, like two trees that grow close together and support each other. They had been friends for a long time and had shared many happy and difficult moments. As they grew older, people noticed that they looked a lot alike and sometimes joked that they could be sisters. They always laughed at this, but they didn’t know that there might be some truth in what people were saying.

In 2016, something quite extraordinary happened. The giant panda,     1     had for more than fifty years been the best-known icon of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF),     2     international wild life protection organization, was taken off the endangered species list. While the giant panda is not quite out of the woods yet — it is still listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), its removal from the     3     (endanger) list is a rare and welcome victory in the fight     4     (save) wildlife. Apart from breakthroughs in scientific research, one of the main     5     (factor) in this victory was the expansion of the protected areas for the giant panda’s habitat. There are now 67 giant panda reserves in China, most of them in Sichuan,     6     these allow pandas to live and breed undisturbed by humans.

There is still much work to be done to preserve and protect the panda and its habitat. However, the progress that     7     (make) in the last fifty years has changed the panda from a symbol of animals near extinction     8     a symbol of hope for all animal species worldwide.     9     is no doubt that through the continued efforts of scientists and researchers, the panda will see an even     10     (great) recovery in the next fifty years.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了作者从小到大是如何利用阅读和研究成为一个“书虫”的。

7 . How and why did I become a bookworm?

I encountered Harry Potter when I was a kid, which I believe is reason enough.     1    . And it also came with a whole complex ecosystem around it like movies, products, fan fictions and so on. My parents saw how much I loved the trilogy and kept “feeding” me with other fantasy books and I’ve never stopped being a little bookworm ever since.

After that, growing up,     2    . Since I’ve always been a little noncompetitive, I challenged myself to read and write as much as possible to try to compensate for my incompetence with math and chemistry. I fell in love with literature, history, geography, philosophy and made it my goal to be the best I could be in all these subjects.

Then I started studying journalism and it all got maybe worse or better. My teenage time in middle school was the worst memories.     3    . Until that point in my life, it all changed when I went to university and saw how much broader the horizon was. So, when I started working as an intern (实习生) for a famous television station in Brazil, I felt like I needed to duplicate my efforts in order to better understand the dynamics of my city, Rio, and not be a young and alienated (格格不入的) professional.     4    .

Years later I registered for a master’s degree course in which the grading was based on the overall scores, encouraging the worst in me in terms of competition.     5    . I spent hours, daily, reading and researching, but eventually relaxed when I realized I needed some balance in life and different fields. But still…The bookworm will never die!

A.I felt I was then isolated in a bubble.
B.I was shocked at the heavy tasks I faced.
C.I treasured memories of those joyous days as time flew.
D.I read and researched so I could, again, compensate at least a little.
E.Having a series of books that I loved, inspired me as a kid so much.
F.I quickly learned that I was terrible with numbers and good with words.
G.The bookworm thus grew a lot and became a little insatiable (贪得无厌) monster.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了荷兰科学家Hans Brunner通过研究发现MAOA基因与人类攻击行为之间的联系,并探讨了基因与行为之间复杂的相互作用。

8 . Our tale begins two decades ago, when a group of Dutch women set out to find an explanation for the antisocial behavior of the males in their family. As well as having learning difficulties, these men and boys were likely to out bursts of aggression and were racking up a list of serious offenses, including murder. Suspecting that the behavior might be hereditary (遗传性的), the women approached geneticist Hans Brunner at the University Hospital in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Eventually, in 1993, he tracked down the crime: a dead variant of a gene called monoamine oxidase A (MAOA), located on the X chromosome (染色体).

Understandably, the announcement created a sensation. It was the first time a gene had been linked to human aggression and MAOA seemed to be responsible for a history of violence stretching back five generations.

In the following years, evidence poured in to support the connection between MAOA and aggression. Then, in 2004, journalist Ann Gibbons sealed the link by giving MAOA the headline-friendly label “warrior gene”. The nickname stuck, raising the profile of MAOA, and at the same time making misconceptions about how our behavior is affected by our genetic make-up.

Explaining the interaction between genes and behavior is one of the toughest tasks in biology. The publication of the entire human genetic code, a decade ago, dispelled any illusion that having the genetic blueprint of our species would give a clear insight into our nature. Instead, what became apparent is that we have far fewer genes than anyone imagined, and that understanding how these shape us as individuals is going to be a huge task.

Genes simply make proteins. So for behavioral geneticists the question is how, when and why they influence our behavior. Clearly, this involves a complex tango (探戈舞) between genes and environments. Working out the exact steps is very difficult, and conveying the findings to those without a scientific background is just as problematic.

1. What’s the main purpose of Hans Brunner’s study?
A.To help a group of Dutch women improve their rights.
B.To prove men are more aggressive than women.
C.To find the reasons for aggressive behavior.
D.To prove how important monoamine oxidase A is.
2. Why is the publication of the entire human genetic code important according to the text?
A.It proved a genetic blueprint would give a clear insight into our nature.
B.It proved the complex interaction between genes and behavior.
C.It showed we needed further research on how genes shaped us as individuals.
D.It showed we actually have more genes than we imagined before.
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.It’s difficult to find rough interplay between genes and behavior.
B.Studying the relationship between genes and the environment is like dancing the tango.
C.Everyone is responsible for discovering the principle on the interaction of genes and behavior.
D.Scientists have a long way to go before the public can understand the findings.
4. What is the best title for this passage?
A.Behavioral Geneticists: Discovering the MAOA Gene’s Impact on Aggression
B.From Warrior Genes To Behavioral Mysteries: A Dutch Study Sparks Thoughts
C.Genes and Environment: The Story of the MAOA Gene
D.Decoding Aggression: The Role of the MAOA Gene in Human Behavior

9 . Mamianqun, or horse-faced skirt, is a traditional Chinese fashion that has exploded in popularity in recent years, thanking in large part to a clothing production base called Cao County in Shandong province. What is the history behind Mamianqun, and how did it become a trending fashion? Let’s get into the world of Mamianqun and explore!

The skirt originated from Song Dynasty but gained popularity among women during the later Ming and Qing dynasties. However, in formal settings like the lunar Lantern Festival, men also wore the skirt. People are wearing them in the streets, in the offices. Social media influencers are all over it, showing us how to adapt age-old styles for today’s fashion.

This resurgence is fueled by a growing sense of cultural pride. Take the intricate, abundant and distinctive pleats which truly set the Mamianqun apart as an example. Designers draw inspirations from traditional Chinese cultural elements to create captivating patterns on the skirts. For instance, The Four Gentlemen Pattern represents traditional Chinese cultural symbols of plum (梅), orchid (兰), bamboo, and chrysanthemum (菊).
