A Move to a New Life
I was shocked when my parents told me we were moving from Baton Rouge, Louisana, to New York. First, I complained about not being able to make new friends and not knowing anything about New York.
My mom said, “You’ll make new friends, and it’s not like you know anything about Baton Rouge anyway.
I protested, “But I don’t want to leave Louisiana. The weather is perfect here!”
My mom shot me a disapproving look and said, “You’ll get used to the weather in New York.”
I remember thinking about running away and joining a circus somewhere, but then I remembered that circus animals smell really bad, and I would miss my parents. So I wandered around the house pick picking up random things, like my baseball and glove, and throwing them into a cardboard box. I felt like a big, heavy rain cloud I was hanging over my head.
Within three days, all the furniture we were taking e taking with us was packed into a moving van (小型货车). Oder things were ready to be sold for nowhere near what we paid for them. Little by little our yard sale decreased until no one even looked at the well-worn coffee table, chewed-up plastic toys, and slightly damaged coffee cups—all of which I had my teeth on at one time or another
The next day was Monday, and we got up early to beat the traffic. I’ll spare you the details of how boring it was to sit in a van and watch each tree as it passed by only to see another tree getting closer until it a so passed by. Halfway there, we stopped at a motel (汽车旅馆) to spend the night. This time, no one could sleep because of the smell coming from the heater in the room. By the time we finally made it to New York, it was the middle of the night, and my head was already drooping (低垂) on to my shoulder.

3 . It wasn’t until I got into college and took a class on creative writing that I began to trust my own madness. The professor encouraged us to color outside the lines and trust our abilities as a writer. We had weekly sessions where we read each other’s work and had to give constructive criticism.
On our first assignment, I struggled with getting my ideas onto paper. I knew that kind of story I wanted to tell, but as a reserved young man, I was terrified of judgement from my peers. I was afraid they would think my writing was too dark or really messed up. But finally, after spending hours thinking of making the writing more socially acceptable, I decided to write it like I felt it.
In the next critique session, I was shocked at the reaction from my peers. There was some constructive criticism, which really helped me improve, but overall, they loved how realistic and convincing my writing was. At the end of the class, the professor asked me if she could use my assignment as a sample for her other classes to know that they can trust their own madness with their writing.
For the final we had a huge paper for which we had to write on Henry V. The professor encouraged me to write it in the voice I had developed in the creative writing class, so I did. The consequence was that she called it a graduate level paper and asked to use it as another sample.
That year I ended up winning a writing award. I also entered a writing contest online and out of hundreds of entries, got an honorable mention. And that was when I decided to have a shot at fiction.

4 . I was filled with doubts and worries until my grandfather told me to stand tall.
For me, height was my trouble. I was much taller than other girls, so I often bent (弯曲) my body at the back of the line. I had always felt unsafe as the tallest student of my class in Bala Cynwyd. And I wasn’t looking forward to entering the ninth grade.
My grandfather didn’t laugh at me. Instead, whenever I tried to bend myself in order to appear shorter, he would tell me “Stand straight and tall, Alisa”. I trusted my grandfather more than anyone else in my childhood. And whenever I was afraid of something, he always told me stories of his life.
My grandfather grew up in war-torn (战乱的) Europe. “Stand straight, stand tall” meant something else then. After the war, he went to America. He lived a hard life. “If they could do it, why couldn’t I?” “Stand straight, stand tall,” he often reminded himself. Thanks to the help of a friend, my grandfather got a job. He once told me that he was very nervous at first. He was not only trying to learn this hard new job but also a new language.
“Stand straight, stand tall,” he would always tell himself. I am so proud of my grandfather. After listening to my grandfather’s unusual experiences, I have changed the way I look at my own life.
“Stand straight, stand tall” has become not only a piece of advice to improve my posture (身姿). It also tells me to be proud of who I am.

7 . In my childhood, my parents would take me to watch games. I loved the excitement I would feel when we went to watch these events, especially when the scores were close until the very end of the game. My meaningful attempt at sports began with T-ball at the age of three, progressed to the basketball court at six, and finally turned into a firm devotion to the game of baseball from the age of eight onward.
One of my most memorable moments was at the World Series when I was eleven and played on the Texas Rattlers. The July heat was unbearable. It was the semi-final game. Sweating like a pig, we ran into the dugout for our last at-bat (上场击球); we were down one run now. I was the second hitter and captain of the team, and I was ready for this moment. In the next few seconds, I had the chance to show my strength as a hitter and my ability to be a leader under pressure by hitting a home run! We carried the day!
As the team captain, I remember the time I had to give a speech to my team because we had lost an important game. I was nervous, but I knew it was my responsibility to cheer my team up when they were cast down. This experience has shaped my mind, making me become more independent, so I’m obtaining the ability to talk like a leader in front of my team and a group. Sports get it through my head that you can’t win at everything in life all the time.
On and of the field, I am more iron-willed, disciplined (遵守纪律的) and respectful, and a better leader. I have had so many awesome experiences through sports, which have taught me much and prepared me for the future. The memories of all the trips and diverse experiences I have had will be with me for a lifetime.

10 . My journey into the world of rock climbing began through an online connection with Octavia via LinkedIn. I’ve been curious about climbing for a long time, wondering how such a dangerous sport can be practiced so extensively by people of all ages.
Octavia got into climbing as a teenager and hasn’t stopped since. Now she and her husband Dani live a life organized around a shared passion and their days are spent in nature, surrounded by good friends and incredible views. During the video chat, Octavia extended an invitation for me to come and climb near Braşov.
We met in Zărneşti and headed to Prăpăstiile Zărneştilor, an amazing spot for climbers seeking the thrill of vertical challenges. Arriving at the rock face, I found some climbers were there already. Some of them were acquaintances, others not, but they treated each other as long-time friends.
The couple walked me through the basics of the climb, ensuring I was comfortable and equipped with the necessary climbing gear. They had prepared a beginner-friendly climbing route, thoughtfully designed to provide both challenges and victories. After they explained the safety features of the whole climbing setup, I embarked on my first climbing.
After my initial climb, exhaustion surged through my body, but their unwavering encouragement kept me coming back for more. It was an extra fun challenge when people from down below shouted clues up to me, which helped me find ways to put my hands and find a foothold so that I could get over particularly tricky parts of the line.
As I left the crag (峭壁) that day, I was part of something bigger than myself. I now look forward to future climbs. Not just for the thrill of ascending heights, but to once again bask in the warmth of the encouragement of my newfound friends. With their guidance, every climb will become evidence to the heights we can reach, both on and off the rock face.
