As her confidence in the gym improved, she hardly spent a day without going to the gym. “When I first started, I would come home feeling tired,” she said. “Every muscle ached, but as I progressed, my fitness levels improved and I got better. Carl moved to Arizona in December. He came from the round, green mountains of Vermont to the Sonoran Desert where the mountains were sharp, brown, and wrinkled. Carl was homesick.
Carl’s new home was the town of Silverbell. Silverbell sat near a river with the same name. But there was not a drop of water in this river.
Carl hadn’t made any real friends yet. He always walked home from school alone. One day, though, he heard a lonely melody (旋律) floating in the wind. It sounded wonderful-and fitted Carl’s mood just right. He followed the music to the schoolyard and found Tadio, the kid who always sat by himself in the lunchroom. He sat on the steps playing a wooden flute (长笛).
“That song is wonderful!” Carl said.
“Thank you,” Tadio said with a bright, sunny smile.
“I’m Carl. I play, too.” He took out bis own silver flute.
“Ah, my name is Tadio. Let’s play together.”
Carl joined Tadio. They played Ode to Joy, a piece that they both knew by heart. The two got along so well that Carl felt comfortable telling Tadio about his homesickness.
“It just doesn’t feel like winter around here,” Carl said. “I don’t think it ever will. It’s too hot.”
Tadio said, “It feels like winter to me, but I’ve lived in Silverbell my whole life.”
“So, why is it called Silverbell anyway?” asked Carl.
“Because of the canyon (峡谷). My grandfather said at special times, one could hear her ring like a silver bell…for example when the rain poured down,” Tadio said.
Then Carl complained about Principal Ramire’s request for his flute solo at tomorrow’s winter concert.
“Ah, you are shy, but you play very well. Let’s meet tomorrow before the concert to practice. Maybe that will help ease your fear. I know a spot beside the canyon where I often go to play. Sometimes, her echo (回音) sounds like she’s singing with me,” Tadio laughed.
The next day was sunny and warm. After school, the two boys spread out a blanket beside Silverbell Canyon and played, stopping only when they heard the sound of distant thunder. The rain followed.

9 . Everyone was shocked as I placed my son Ilias’s first birthday cake in front of him. He loved Sesame Street, so I made him an Elmo cake in rich red icing(糖霜). I’d worked for hours to perfect my design and make the most delicious and jaw-dropping cake. I enjoyed every minute of it.
I started baking(烘焙) when Ilias was born. At that time, I struggled with the pressure of being a new mum and was diagnosed with postnatal depression(产后抑郁症). So to help walk out of that dark hole, at night when Ilias slept I ran into the kitchen and decided to bake a cake.
Then, with my mum’s birthday coming up, I saw a handbag cake in a shop. I threw my all into copying it and finally I made it. Mum was so blown away by my creation that she didn’t cut the cake. Instead, she kept it in a glass cake stand on display at home for a month.
Over time I created many delicious delights. The best part was seeing Ilias’s face light up when he saw them. “You should do this for a living,” my husband, Michael, suggested. I laughed it off, but it wasn’t a bad idea.
After Ilias’s third birthday, I set up a shop for my cake baking, calling it Cake Queen Oz, and orders started to come in. As time passed, the bakeshop became my full-time job. Once, I made a Titanic cake that was the length of a table for a lady whose family loved ships. It’s been seven years since Cake Queen Oz was born.
Cake baking brought me joy when I was going through a tough time. Every day I feel lucky that I’ve been able to turn my hobby into my job.

10 . Before I came to the United States years ago, I had thought that culture separated people, but I have realized now that cultures are closer than we know. In the United States, there are certainly more differences than similarities when comparing it to my country.
An amazing aspect of culture is the food produced. I’ve always been a foodie (美食家). When I was hungry, there were many foreign signs of restaurants, but deciding which one was a difficult task. I remember reading the sign for “Chipotle” and I had no idea what was served there.
Who would ever have imagined that an experience as simple as trying new food would produce thoughts of cultures? I find it truly beautiful that each culture brings different spices and tastes to the table. I have tried wonderful foods from all sorts of cultures. Each is very unique and atmospheres are also quite interesting and culturally affected. Although the food may taste different, preparation can be somewhat consistent (一致的). Many of the foods I have tasted have had similar mechanisms of cooking (烹饪机制).
Here in the United States, it can be somewhat difficult to express all of my culture, mainly because there are many different cultures here. But I have found common ground on these matters and have learned to adapt (适应)to different cultures.
I have learned how to live in two cultures. I’m not saying it’s easy, I’m not saying that it’s extremely hard, but it’s all about balance. Each person has their own culture. Life has too many things to care. The theory of “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” is very applicable in most situations. Throughout my experiences here, I have certainly learned a lot about others. Culture is something different to many people but in the end, it connects all of us. Cultures bring others together to create new and exciting situations.
