1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The routine practice in the school band came to an end. Mark and Steven smiled at each other, happily talking about the weekend arrangements. Steven was putting his saxophone(萨克斯) into the case when he tripped over a shelf Unfortunately, it fell and hit his saxophone. Clang! “Oh no!” Steven yelled.

Mark quickly picked up the saxophone, checked it and then handed it to Steven, who stood still, at a loss. Mark helped Steven put away all the things and comforted him with the thought that it was not a new saxophone. Anyway, it already had a lot of dents(凹痕).

“I know. But it’s my grandpa’s. He is visiting us this Sunday.” Steven lowered his head, upset.

Steven’s grandpa used to be a great saxophonist in the national band. When Steven was even a baby, his grandpa always played some famous tunes like “Edelweiss,” “Rivers of Babylon,” “Forever in love” for him.

Staring at Steven in confusion, Mark asked what was wrong. Steven sighed deeply and then showed his concern that whenever his grandpa came, he would ask Steven to play with his beloved saxophone. “Maybe he won’t notice the new dent or maybe he won’t care,” Mark said with a shrug(耸肩). “But what if Grandpa notices the dent? How is he going to react? And how shall I tell him about it?” replied Steven.

On the bus home, Steven thought about all the possibilities. To avoid playing the saxophone, he could pretend that he had a fever. Oh no! He didn’t like lying. He could get his baby brother, Joseph, to take all of Grandpa’s attention. Or, he could turn to mum for help…

There was no sign that the earthquake was coming.

A 7.8 magnitude (震级) quake almost flattened the city, killing over thousands of lives in less than a few minutes.

In the midst of destruction and chaos, a father left his wife securely at home and rushed to the school where his son Daniel was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.

After the upsetting shock, he remembered the promise he had made to Daniel: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. He looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school. Everything looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.

He began to concentrate on where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stones and bricks.

As he was digging, other anxious parents arrived, heartbroken, shouting desperately: “Mary!” “Sam!”

Some other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late!” “They’re dead!” “You can’t help!” “Go home!” “Come on! There’s nothing you can do here!” “You’re just going to make things worse!”

To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?”

And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone.

Some firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, and explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Just go home!” To which this loving, determined father asked, “Are you going to help me now?”

The fire chief replied, “You’re angry and worried. I get it. But you are not helping by staying here. Just go home. We will help you find your son!” To which he replied, “But I promised my son I’ll always be there for him.”

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Midde school is a tough time for almost everyone. Most kids are trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be. It took me some time to realize that I wanted to be kind more than I wanted to be popular.

I was talking to some friends while standing in line in the cafeteria at my middle school. As I started to share a funny story, my friend Elizabeth interrupted me. “Coco! Coco!” She called out. All my friends laughed. This was so strange, I thought.

Over the next week, every time I opened my mouth around Elizabeth, she interrupted me with that same word. Elizabeth was one of the girls that everyone wanted to be friends with. She always had the nicest clothes and told the funniest jokes. I felt lucky to be friends with her. I didn’t want to be left out, so I started using the word too. Elizabeth thought it was funny when I interrupted someone else’s story with our new code word. And since I wanted her to like me, I did it even more, even though I wasn’t sure what it meant.

One day after school, Sara, a classmate since primary school, stopped by my desk and asked, “Julia, do you know why Elizabeth started saying ‘Coco’ all the time?”

I shook my head.

Sara sighed. “It means she thinks you’re being annoying. A few days ago, she told us that you were bothering her when you told stories. She wanted a code word without you knowing she was talking about you. I know it’s really mean, and the rest of us shouldn’t have gone along with it. I’m really sorry.”

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Nothing will ever be the same again,” Ally said to herself.

Ally's father died last summer. It wasn't fair, Ally thought. Dad was young and had never been sick. Why had his heart suddenly stopped? Ally sank slow into her father's favorite chair and looked at his picture on the bookcase. Ally smiled. “I miss you, Dad,” she said softly.

At this moment, she felt a hand smoothing her hair and looked up. “Why don't you come outside with me, Ally?” her mother asked. “The birds are nesting in the woods. By this time last year you'd already taken dozens of pictures.”

But her mother must know birdwatching wouldn't be the same this year. How could it be? Ally wondered. Ever since she could remember she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods for the special wood warbler (林柳莺). “I'll be out in while, I promise,” she answered.

After her mother left, Ally reached for the photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover was a photo of a tiny yellow bird with blue-gray wings and black eyes. Dad cut it from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on Dad's face when he showed her the pretty bird.

“I can't believe someone spotted this little guy way up here in New Jersey,” he said. “Wood warblers are usually found in the south, not this far north. I bet if we search really hard, Ally, we'll see this little guy together someday.”

Ally closed her eyes. She loved thinking about the times she and Dad had spent searching the woods for the little bird. They'd never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. He was her best friend.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A lady wanted a birthday gift from her husband. For many months she had longed for having that beautiful ring, and knew for sure her husband could afford it. She told him that was all she wanted. On the morning of the birthday, her husband told her how proud he was to have such a good wife, and how much he loved her. As it was expected, he gave her a beautiful gift package. She couldn't wait to open it but only found a Bible inside. Angrily, she raised her voice and said to

her husband, “With all your money wasted, you give me a Bible?” She was so upset and disappointed that she only touched the cover of the book and left for another town far away. They hadn't contacted each other since then.

Many years passed and the lady was very successful in business. She owned two large companies and devoted all her time to running them. With time going on, she realized her husband was very old, and thought perhaps she should go back to visit him one day. But before she could, she received a letter telling her that he had been seriously ill and wanted to see her again for the last time. Without hesitation she drove on the way back almost at once.

When she arrived at his house, sadness filled her heart. He was lying in the bed and couldn't say even one word. He saw her, looking happy and excited. He pointed at something beside his pillow.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart, I was sad because I couldn’t stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.

When Christmas miming came, I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face. “Dad. Merry Christmas!” was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys’ faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection (检查) had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.

Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gins, I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages constantly thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence from their Christmas these years.
