With a wide smile on her face, 15-year-old Sirin eagerly rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But Mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke impatiently, “No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK?”

Holding her oil painting, she frowned (皱眉),and then searched for her dad. “Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin exclaimed cheerfully. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!

Immediately, Sirin replied angrily, “Dad, you haven’t seen it yet.”

He smiled at her saying, “No time, baby. I will see it later.” He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.

She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils (鼻孔) ; her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed the door and threw herself on her bed.

“Why is everybody so busy?” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in preschool, middle school and even in high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.

The knocking sound on the door put a sudden stop to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately (故意地) came late to join them. She kept silent and didn’t look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly the morning incident came to mind. Softly, she asked, “ Honey, did I do anything wrong? ”

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了牢固的亲子关系可以帮助青少年顺利度过叛逆期,并提出一些可以为青少年和父母创造积极体验的建议。

5 . Raising teenagers can be both difficult and rewarding(有回报的). They are becoming young adults. Almost all teenagers will have some behavioral outbursts(爆发) with their families during this period of life.     1     Here are some ideas that may create positive(积极的) experiences for teens and parents.

Have meals together. Mealtime is when we check in with each other.     2     Eating meals together offers a way for parents and kids to share what is on their minds. It brings families closer by creating trust and understanding to help guide children through the challenges of the teen years.

3     As teens develop their own sense of independence, it gets harder to find time to talk. Talk in the car together, when doing dishes together, or any time you have a chance. Remember that no matter how big their problems seem, what most teens want is love and support. Help them connect with their families and communities. During these years, help teens learn that their words and actions mater.     4     Others may find connection through spiritual communities or from having more responsibilities at home. Connecting with families and communities also helps keep teens safe from riskier activity.

Find time to have fun together! What do you both enjoy? Playing chess? Going to the ballet? Volunteering in your community? Take time to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. No one wants the attention of people they love to be focused only on what not to do. This is true for teenagers, too.     5

A.Talk with your teen.
B.Never try to control your child.
C.Parents have a role in keeping their teens safe.
D.Relaxing together helps them feel loved and valued.
E.This can be hard to do with busy schedules, but it is important.
F.Some teens learn this by playing in music bands or team sports.
G.But strong relationships can help teens and their parents through hard times.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Elizabeth walked to the yard, carrying a bunch of daisies(雏菊).

“Beautiful flowers for, for... Oh, I’ll never get it right!” She cried, throwing the daisies on the ground. She had been practising her speech for a week.

Part of her couldn’t wait. This Saturday, the great Ana Wolff, famous pianist, would perform at the concert hall in town. For four years, Elizabeth had listened to Ms Wolffs recordings over and over again, loving the way the notes flowed like a rushing mountain stream.

Part of Elizabeth was terrified. Her music teacher at school, Mr Leaf, had asked her to present the flowers to Ms Wolff after the performance. But Elizabeth knew herself well. She had serious stage fright and she really hated it when she had to talk in front of people. Even so, Elizabeth was determined to take the challenge this time.

“How’s the speech going?” asked Elizabeth’s mother, “Want to practice on me?”

“No, thanks,” said Elizabeth, “Mum, I can’t do this! I’ll forget. I might even pass out(昏倒)!”

“Oh, honey. Think about it... sharing the stage with Ana Wolff. What an honour!” Mum gently comforted her.

Elizabeth kept practising. “Beautiful flowers for... for a beautiful performance...” She presented the flowers to the cat, the dog, even the statue in the garden. Soon it was Saturday night, Elizabeth stood at the backstage, behind the heavy black curtains. Holding the bouquet(花束)of red roses, she felt her heart racing wildly and her stomach tightened with nervousness.

The lights dimmed, and Ms Wolff began her performance. She swayed and nodded with her fingers dancing across the keys. Soft sad parts, loud angry parts, parts that sounded fun to play. Drawn into the music, Elizabeth forgot for a moment about the six words she had to say. With a flourish(挥舞), Ms Wolff played her final note. Applause thundered through the hall. People jumped to their feet and cheered.

Ms Wolff smiled and bowed. Then she walked off stage and into the wings(舞台侧面). Almost immediately, she returned to the stage for a second bow.

10 . When I was first married to my wife, I lived and worked in Ontario, moving from small town to big city as I pursued my career as a radio broadcaster. We have two sons, both of whom were born in Toronto, but they moved, with us, to Ottawa when they were quite young. They grew up there, and then, chasing their own careers, they also moved. One went to Canada’s east coast near a city called Halifax and the other headed to the west coast to Vancouver. We had a dilemma; we were left in the middle.

At the time I was still working and my job was in Ottawa. However, as we began to consider retirement we wondered where we should spend our final years. We couldn’t be close to both of our children and there was no telling when they might again relocate. For several reasons we settled on a small town on Vancouver Island. At least we were close to one of them. However, he had his sights set on Hollywood and, when an opportunity presented itself, he left Canada and headed south. I helped him move.

So, there we were, and still are, in our little west coast town. We love our little corner of paradise but we have paid a price. We have not been there for some important events such as the births of two of our grandchildren. We have missed watching each of them grow up; we have missed the normal, noisy households that have young people in them. Our home, while very comfortable, is also very quiet.

Every fall we travel to see the children. We usually fly, first to California to see our son Scott and spend a week or more with him trying to catch up on everything we’ve missed. Then, usually in November, we make the even longer trip east across Canada to see Travis and our grandchildren, who are now teenagers, actually into their twenties. They seldom come to visit us. The distances are just too great and it is costly.

Fortunately, both our boys are doing well and our grandchildren are growing up straight and tall. We love all of them and we are secure in the knowledge that they love us but the reality is that they don’t need us. We have done our jobs and, at least in theory, we can sit back, relax and enjoy the time remaining to us. They have also missed having a set of parents and grandparents around.

Life has been good for our family but we have all paid a price.

1. What does the author mean by saying “We had a dilemma.”?
A.They were not happy about their sons’ absence.
B.They were unwilling to separate from their sons.
C.They were not yet prepared for retirement at that time.
D.They couldn’t decide which son to live close to.

B.They have to give a large sum of money to their sons.
C.They have been absent from their children’s life.
D.They have to afford very expensive fare to visit their sons.
3. Why do not the author’s grandchildren visit them regularly?
A.They are quite occupied with their homework.
B.It’s not easy for the kids to visit their grandparents.
C.They don’t need their grandparents any more.
D.The weather of winter in Canada is very awful.
4. What is the best title for the text?
