文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了家中不同顺序出生的孩子所具有的一些特点。

1 . Within your family, are you the “boss”, the “peacemaker”, the “baby” or the “king”?     1

Firstborn — The “Boss”

First-time parents often have very high expectations for their eldest children.     2     Firstborns tend to be natural leaders who respect and trust authority. Many astronauts and engineers are firstborn children.

Middle child — The “Peacemaker”

Typically, parents don’t give middle children as much attention as the firstborn or the youngest.     3     As a result, they are usually determined to achieve success in their own way. They don’t like conflict and will try to avoid it. They are often realistic, independent, patient peacemakers and good communicators.

Youngest child — The “Baby”

By the time the youngest family member is born, most parents have loosened their rules.     4     They often enjoy amusing others and being the center of attention. They are typically fun-loving, creative people who aren’t afraid to question authority or take risks.

Only child — The “King of the Castle”

Life in the family of an only child often revolves around him or her.    5    An only child enjoys learning from adults and is usually very clever for his or her age. Only children are creative and intelligent and can easily communicate with adults. They are typically confident, independent and very successful. What about you? Does the birth order description match your personality?

A.Thus, they tend to have more freedom.
B.That often causes them to feel they are ignored.
C.Early-born children experience a better social environment.
D.These kids don’t have to share their toys or their parents’ time.
E.Many researchers believe your position in the family influences your personality.
F.As a result, these kids are often responsible, organized, bossy, successful achievers.
G.The relationships between birth order, personality, and behavior confuse many researchers.

As a young boy, I was innocent. Every vacation I looked forward to two things-seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various jobs when he was young and wove ( 编 织)his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.

As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa's stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.

When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss.It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆),probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer's disease. Following the doctor's directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.

One weekend before my grandpa's birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was filled with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn't express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.

It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball, wearing basketball jerseys (球衣), with grandpa cheering us on ten years before.

“Mom!” 11-year-old Mark cried to his mom, Cindy. “I don’t want to wear the sweater!”

“Please, honey, put it on! We’re already running late!” Cindy said as she packed their suitcases. “But Mom! It’s not even my size. Can I please get something else to wear?”

“Don’t trouble your mom, Mark,” his dad, Luke, said. “We have to leave now.”

Cindy and Luke took out their suitcases and put them into the car. The family were taking a skiing trip to the mountains. Mark sat in the back seat, angry, because he hated the sweater!

It was a red sweater, a bit too big for him, and its sleeves were not even the same size. It was Mark’s birthday gift. Grandma Sandy promised him a video game, but gave him a sweater instead! Mark didn’t like it. He told Grandma by phone that he would never wear it. He didn’t know how hard it had been for her to make the sweater by hand.

Because it was snowing heavily, Luke drove slowly. By the time they arrived at the holiday center, it was late in the evening.

Mark was quite excited about going skiing for the first time. He asked his parents to let him go look around, and they agreed. Mark raced off to a nearby spot and Cindy kept an eye on him. When Luke removed their suitcases, Cindy helped him. Then she noticed Mark was nowhere to be seen.

Worried, Luke and Cindy tried to find him, but failed. They told the manager about the situation. He sent out a few staff members to help look for Mark.

Almost half an hour later, two of the staff observed a hand sticking out behind a tree. They discovered Mark, who was unconscious. He was brought to the hospital soon, but he didn’t wake up until a few hours later.

“It’s a good thing the boy was wearing a large sweater that kept most of his body covered and warm due to its large size. It was a typical case of hypothermia (体温过低),” the doctor said. “Do you remember what happened, Mark?” the doctor asked him.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Viewed from dry land, the river looked beautiful. The fast-flowing waters of the Snake River were crisp and clear as they crashed over the rocks below. I was 16 and my parents had hired a car to drive us children around North America and Canada in the summer holidays.

Upon our arrival, lost in the beautiful scenery, we couldn't wait to start our tour. Dad got a dinghy(橡皮艇)from somewhere. It looked a bit small for the six of us, and we didn't have safety helmets, and were wearing adult-sized life jackets. I don't think any of us had even seen rapids(急流)until we went down them that day, otherwise we'd have realized how foolhardy(莽撞的)our plan was.

The first part of the ride was pretty hair-raising and it was apparent that we had no idea what we were doing. After 20 minutes we hit a rapid and got stuck: there was a huge rock under the surface and our boat was letting in water. The bottom got stuck and we were trapped in the middle of a wide, fast-moving river. Wall after wall of freezing water hit me and the iciness took my breath away. My brother, sisters and I were screaming, Dad was shouting at us that it would all be OK, while Mum yelled at us to hold on. We had no time to come up with any plan other than to hold tight.

It felt as if we were stuck for hours, unable to think or breathe, but it was probably only a few minutes. Then, suddenly I was swept out of the dinghy. I felt a sense of horror, which was replaced by an even greater terror when I realized I was going down the rapids without a boat. I was spun around, bounced off rocks and fell into water: it's what I imagine being trapped in a washing machine is like. There's no sense of up or down; you just gasp(喘气)for air when you can. I remember thinking, "This is it. I am going to die."

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in. But the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out.

"That's the whole idea," my grandfather explained. "The piggy bank will help you save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that bike you dream about." He added, "Will you put some of the money given by me in the following days into the piggy bank?" I said “yes" and promised.

Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, "This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up." When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew excited, dreaming about what I could do with my savings.

One day my friend and I visited the new ice-cream shop in town. but we didn't have enough money to buy just one ice cream. So my friend asked me to take some money out of my piggy bank. "No, I can't." I replied. "There is an opening for putting the money in, but no way for taking any out. Besides, my grandfather told me that I need to save money until the end of the year."

"Come on…" said my friend. Finally, I gave in. We took the piggy bank to the park and tried our best to shake out the money. We succeeded. From then on, I became good at taking money out of my piggy bank. Soon, it became a habit. And I started taking out money whenever I wanted it.

One day I was doing that again when my grandfather walked in. I was frightened.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There was an eight-year-old girl. One day, while returning from school with her mum, she saw a wonderful Barbie doll, on the shelf of a toy shop. The Barbie was designed and packed perfectly. She insisted her mum to buy it, but her mum was having a cash shortage and 50 dollar for the doll was a bit too much to afford as her husband was separated and all she was using was her savings to live their life.

Now each day after her school while coming back with her mum the girl cried for that toy and all her mum could say was next month. Days passed and this continued. Mum got fed up and slapped her daughter for the first time to force her to forget about that toy, and then promised a better one (obviously low cost). However, the kid was very stubborn. She wanted that only.

It was the month of winter when her mum found a job which she could do at home at night after making her daughter sleep. Finally she could have extra money, now she was a bit relaxed. On a Monday afternoon, she went to pick up her daughter as usual, but this time she didn’t go alone. She bought the Barbie toy for her. The kid was glad to see that, excitedly hugging her mum. She was in joy.

Each day the kid played with her doll, making her bath, combing her hair, and making her put on fancy dress. Days passed, and now she was one year older. The Barbie was not as that important. While playing, she grabbed the hair, broke her one hand, etc. Gradually she got bored and the Barbie toy was dumped somewhere unknown.

Years later, she got married. And one day, she came to visit her old mum.

My little brother is a five-year-old boy named Tex. When it comes to being funny and lovable, he is the best. But when it comes to keeping secrets, he is the worst!

It just so happened that my parents’ wedding anniversary was near Valentine’s Day, and they planned to celebrate by going away for a couple of days. But at the last minute, my dad came home from work with bad news.

“I’m afraid our trip will have to wait. The shop assistant has the flu, so there will be no one to manage the grocery store if we go.”

“It’s OK,” my mom said, biting her lip. “We’ll have lots more anniversaries to celebrate.”

That was when I came up with the idea to surprise my parents with an extra-special cake. Luckily, the grandmother of my good friend Ollie, a very generous person who lives right next door, was an amazing baker with a kitchen full of most of the stuff you need to make a yummy valentine-anniversary cake.

I called Ollie if she and her grandmother could help me make a valentine-anniversary cake. I wanted to surprise Mom and Dad after dinner tonight. As usual, Ollie was happy to help me. Then, I asked my mother if I could go to Ollie’s and promised I would be back soon. Once I had my mom’s permission, I looked for perfect ingredients and a perfect heart-shaped pan just to make my cake more interesting and tasty. As I packed all the things I needed, I noticed Tex was glued to TV, which I thought was a perfect opportunity to leave secretly.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At 76 years old, Melanie felt tired all the time. It had nothing to do with her age, though. 14 years ago, her son, Anthony, died in a plane crash. After a long-time search, the rescuers said there were no survivors and no hope for the victims’ families.

Luckily, Melanie had Anthony’s son, Mark, and his wife, Kayla, to get her by. But it wasn’t the same. She missed Anthony and often felt hopeless about life. Her son died at a young age. He left a baby, and Kayla had not recovered from his death either.

One day at home, when watching the news on TV, Melanie and Kayla were suddenly surprised by what they were seeing. A news reporter was talking beside a man who looked like Anthony. He seemed older than he had ever been. The news caused great excitement. “It must be him!” Melanie and Kayla both said happily.

“If you recognize this man, please call the number on the screen. Recently, a vague (模糊的)memory of having a plane crash hit this man’s mind. But he still doesn’t remember anything before the crash 14 years ago near the Canary Islands. Authorities now have reason to believe that there was a mistake in the previous report that the crash left no survivors…”

When the news ended, Kayla called the number immediately. She told the attendant that she believed the man was her husband Anthony and provided details. Kayla also asked for more information about what had happened over the past 14 years since the accident. The attendant said, “14 years ago, some local fishermen found him who lost his memory. They offered him a job, and he has worked and lived with one of them since then.”

This attendant then told Anthony that his family were waiting for him to go home. Weeks later, Anthony went to the city where Melanie and Kayla lived. All the family members were waiting at the airport. Finally, the gates opened, and people were coming out.
