2 . As you are growing and changing, you have more responsibilities and also more freedom to spend time with other people. While you may feel ready to make your own decisions about where and when to go, your parents will put limits on you. So you may find you are arguing with your parents more than you used to. The reason why your parents do this is that they care about you and want to protect you from danger.

Here are some tips for how to avoid and handle arguments with your parents:

【1】Discuss the rules ahead of time and not at the last minute. This way you will be able to tell what they will say yes or no to before you make plans. Your parents can also explain to you why each rule is in place. Ask them to give you the chance to explain how the rules make you feel and suggest what you think are right rules. Your parents may be willing to listen to your ideas and use them when making rules that you both agree on.

【2】Try to remain calm when your parents say no to something. You will show your parents that you are responsible and mature(成熟的) by talking instead of shouting.

【3】Spend time with your family. Some teens argue with their parents over the amount of time they spend with their friends. Communicate with each other and make some special family time so that you can all enjoy the time you spend at home. Suggest activities that your whole family will enjoy together such as going on a hike, taking a bike ride, or going to the beach.

1. Your parents limit your activity mainly because they ______.
A.are worried about your safetyB.are afraid it will affect your study
C.think the thing you'll do is badD.want you to be with them at home
2. We can learn from the passage that the right rules are those ______.
A.you have to obeyB.you and your parents have discussed
C.your parents makeD.you and your parents can both accept
3. When your parents prevent you from doing something, you should ______.
A.argue with themB.control yourself
C.fight for your freedomD.not listen to them
4. What's the purpose of the family activities in the last paragraph?
A.To build up their bodies.B.To visit more places of interest.
C.To make parents happy.D.To make children and their parents get along better.
5. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.How to avoid arguments with your parentsB.Stupid rules parents make
C.How to say no to parents' rulesD.Responsibilities and freedom for teens

My mother eyed me with suspicion. I dared not look at her. Knowing that I was late from school five days continuously, I could not offer an acceptable explanation. I knew she did not believe that I had extra classes every day and arrived home after 5 pm. However, realizing she had little choice but to believe in me, she told me that dinner was in the refrigerator. She had to rush for her night shift at the local clinic.

Ever since we lost our dad in an accident, my mother became the breadwinner. I was the eldest among the four siblings and it fell upon my shoulder to ensure that they could become responsible adults. Besides helping mother with the housework, I regularly coached them in their studies. Thankfully, never once had I had to raise my voice or force them to complete their homework. But all of us missed dad very much. He was a model father and husband.Life was cruelly taken away from him at a very young age of 42.

However, my mother managed to pull through and found a job at the clinic. It was very tough on someone like her who had never worked before in her life. But money was scarce and there were five mouths to feed. Dad did not leave much behind. He never suspected he would die so young. We stopped dining out and had our meals mostly at home. We basically lived from hand to mouth. That's when it dawned on me that I had to do my part for the family. I knew mother would not agree but I threw caution out of the window and managed to get a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant.I worked three hours a day and managed to bring home money so that my siblings and I could go out for occasional movies or meals. I was sure that mother suspected something. But she could not quite point the figure to the source of her suspicion.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice’s birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.

This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he’d seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.

How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he tied a bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.

After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately.

The sun was high overhead. The weather was hot and nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. Tony struggled to climb the trees to pick mangoes, though he fell off many times.

His efforts were sometimes rewarded when a mango dropped into the bag. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.

6 . As a teenager, when my family took a vacation, I wrote postcards to show my friends the new places I had explored. I considered postcards as simply a way to share travels until I came across my grandmother’s postcard album.

It was a dark gray leather album, where most of the postcards had pictures that did not reflect a holiday or a travel destination. Instead, the notes were mostly invitations to a dinner party or a walk the next day.

“Why do these postcards ask you to come to tea?” I asked my grandmother.

“Because this is how we communicated before we had a telephone,” she said. “I would pop a postcard in the morning mail, and a friend would receive it that afternoon. Then she’d post a reply that arrived in my mail the next morning.”

I was surprised. Life without a phone sounded like something out of Little House on the Prairie. Connecting by postcards seemed as unexpected as using a carrier pigeon.

I had forgotten about my grandmother’s postcards until lockdowns restricted our trips to seeing our three granddaughters. Remembering my grandmother's album, I bought several sets of cards and every few weeks, I'd write notes and mail them. The girls occasionally responded with brief thank-you texts.

Then one day I opened my mailbox and spied three hand-addressed envelopes. They were from my granddaughters, each thanking me for the postcards. The notes captured their disappointment with the pandemic and how my messages had comforted them.

I had been thinking how my grandmother had accepted the telephone as a new way to keep relationships. Like her, I accepted the girls’ preferred mode of communication and texted my thanks for their letters. Yet, even as the lockdowns end, I will continue to send them postcards because every-one enjoys receiving a real letter in the mail.

1. Why did the author's grandmother write postcards?
A.To share travel experiences.B.To connect with people.
C.To pass the time.D.To show love and care.
2. What did the author think of life without a phone?
A.It was strange and hard to imagine.B.It was peaceful.
C.It was like life on the prairie.D.It was attractive.
3. How does the author feel when receiving letters?
A.Puzzled.B.Regretful.C.Delighted.D.Crazy.
4. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Attraction of PostcardsB.New Ways of Communication
C.Love during LockdownsD.An Old Postcard Album

My mom is really a good cook (I bet all of us have this same claims) and she never really taught me how to cook. She enjoys experimenting various dishes and occasionally she will ask for my help to grind chili, onions or garlic.Basically all simple chores.I sometimes look at how she prepares the dishes and became more observant over the years.Every day she will buy meat or vegetables from a local market near us and just store it in the fridge to be cook later for dinner. She works for the government and she is not available to cook lunch.Every day after coming back from school I would always open the refrigerator and see what she bought and I can always tell what will be for dinner that night. If I see chicken, potatoes and shredded coconut,I would be very excited because I know she will make my favorite dish – Chicken Curry.

My parents do okay but we are by no means wealthy.I think we are comfortable in our daily basic needs but we definitely have no room for luxuries. But when it comes to our dinner,my mom will always make 3 dishes for dinner without failure. It’s almost like eating in a restaurant.I have to admit I was spoiled by my mom when it comes to my eating habits and have high expectations when eating somewhere else.

One day my mom came back from work in the office and she was really in bad mood. She was complaining about how untidy we are and we (my siblings) never contributed in the household chores. To me that is not a fair statement as my elder brother and I took turns to wash the dishes.I was also given the privileged of ironing my mom and dad’s office attire each week.I was 14 at that time and being a boy,I have no intention of letting my friends know. Most of my friends have a maid to do all this but my parents simply couldn’t afford one.

My little sister, Donna, turned six, and she started copying my every move!

“What are you doing?” she asked my friend Maya and me one Saturday morning.

“We're making earrings,” Maya said, pointing to a photo in the craft page of her magazine.

Donna plopped (扑通) down next to us at the table. “May I make one too?”“ Um...”I paused.

“Sure!” Maya said. Donna squeezed in so close to me that I could hardly see what I was doing.

“Can you give me a little more room? You are blocking me from the beads.” I said.

“I'm just trying to see what you're doing.” Donna said.

“Well, you don't need to see exactly what I'm doing.” I told her. “You can make your own design.”

“I am!” she said. She was using the same colors of beads and string and everything that I was using.

Having finished the earrings, Maya suggested we get her guitar to make up songs for our band.

“Excellent idea!” I said. “Let's go to the backyard where we can have some privacy.”

When Donna didn't say anything, I thought she must have gotten the clue. But 10 minutes later, she showed up.

“Sorry I'm late, but I couldn't find my tambourine (铃鼓).” said Donna. “It was in the basket that my kitten

Charlie was sleeping in. Isn't that so funny? Maybe, we should invite Charlie to be in our band!”

“Our band?” I said. “Since when is this our band? You're constantly following me like a shadow, and I'm tired of it.”

9 . The scars that Pat Pribble carried through life were formed nearly 50 years ago, caused by fellow students in Woodland, who picked on him because he was different.

Pat's parents had held him back in the seventh grade in secondary school, so he ended up in the same class as his younger brother, Leo. Forever the oldest kid in the class, Pat tried to fit in. He played sports. He went on dates. But he was always just not good enough for this; just not smart enough for that. Pat Pribble was a target.

After graduating, Pat drifted and lost his way. He was homeless, and he never married or had children. From a distance, with his long gray hair and beard, Pat appears tough, the kind of man you might cross the street to avoid. When talking with others, he shows a gentle side. He speaks quietly, measuring his words, careful to hide what he is thinking and feeling, as those were the very things others once seized upon to laugh at him.

Last November, as Carey planned for the 45th reunion in 2021, he decided to personally invite Leo. As the two men caught up on each other’s lives, Carey learned that Leo had terminal (晚期的) brain cancer and had only months to live. Leo then made one more request — everyone should also call Pat. And so they did. “Never underestimate (低估) people,” said Leo. “We’re all different now than when we were kids.”   Leo passed away this past January. His former classmates had promised him that after he was gone they wouldn't lose track of Pat, and they have kept that promise. Healing wounds from the past has allowed Pat to look to the future. “I’ll be at the next reunion,” he says.

1. What does the underlined words “picked on him” mean in paragraph 1 ?
A.treated him unkindlyB.encouraged him enthusiastically
C.avoided him deliberatelyD.trusted him entirely
2. Pat Pribble was a target during his school time because of ________.
A.his family backgroundB.his limited ability
C.his way of speakingD.his economic condition
3. What can we imply from Leo's words in the last paragraph?
A.People have the potential for change.
B.People’s ability should be overestimated.
C.Kids tend to behave more badly than adults.
D.What his classmates had done was never forgiven.
