1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My heart beat wildly as I stared at my phone screen. I re-read the message from my friend, Jane. Someone had upset her by sharing her personal news: she had been refused by her dream school. Jane had shared the sad news with only a few people. She didn’t know who let the word out, but she was really hurt and disappointed.

I felt so bad. I knew how the news had gotten out because I had been the one to tell someone beyond her closest friends. Honestly, I hadn’t realized she meant to keep it so close to only a few in the first place, but at the same time I’d known it wasn’t a good idea when I started to tell it to someone else.

Did she really not know it was me? It would have been easy to admit what I had done and apologize if her message put the blame, specifically, on me. But it read as though it had been copied and sent to several people. Once again ignoring the right choice, I chose the coward’s (懦夫) way out instead.

“I’m so sorry for what happened to you,” I typed. “How awful that your confidence was broken!”

I hoped that would work. Her reply came back within seconds: “Thank you.”

“It would be okay for me to remain anonymous (匿名), wouldn’t it?” I thought to myself.

But, deep down, I knew I’d been the one to break faith and hurt her. I was ashamed, not only of my original action, but also because I’d taken a further step in the wrong direction by covering it up.

I felt painful at church on Sunday, sitting in silence all the time. Later, the speaker asked us to examine ourselves and see if anything stood in the way of holding on to our faith, and if so, not to let anything stop us until we cleared it away. Chancing it all — whatever we feared, whatever held us back — would be worth it to make it right.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据上下文填入适当的词语,或使用括号中的词语的适当形式。

This summer we went to visit my father in Scotland. He lives about 3 hours from Glasgow, but had arranged for us     1     (meet) him in the Highlands, a little place called Acharacle, near Fort William. We drove up from Yorkshire where I had visited my sister, spent the night in Glasgow, and continued our journey the     2     (follow) day.

Acharacle is a very remote, beautiful area. It’s a tiny village, with houses     3     (hide) all around it in the trees. It is very close to     4     sea, so that is where we spent most of our time.Several beaches there are unspoilt, and all of     5     are so clean. I took Robert and Domini with me to one of the     6     (small) beaches to play in the white sand. As soon as we got there, they ran over to a rock pool and discovered a school of trapped fish.It was as if they     7     (discover) treasure. They could scoop up     8     (hand) of them with delight.I even did. They stayed in this rock pool for what seemed like ages,    9     their sleeves were wet and they started to get cold. Then we walked along the beach, collecting shells which we now have at home. Catching fish in Scotland is fun,     10     (especial) when you can do it with your hands.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1985 my parents made the big move from Illinois, to southern Califormia, along with three very tiny children and all their household possessions. My mother had carefully wrapped and packed four boxes of her mother’s hand-painted dinner china. Grandmother had painted this lovely set herself, choosing a forget-me-not pattern (勿忘我图案).

Unfortunately, something happened during the move. One box of the china didn’t make it. It never arrived at our new house. So my mother had only three-quarters of the set — she had plates of different sizes and some serving pieces, but missing were the cups and saucers (茶碟) and the bowls. Often at family gatherings or when we would all sit down for a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, my mother would say something about the missing china and how she wished it had survived the trip.

When my mother died I inherited Grandmother’s china. I, too, used the set on many special occasions, and I, too, wondered what had happened to the missing box.

I love to visit flea markets (跳蚤市场), hunting for treasures. It’s great fun to walk up and down the streets early in the morning, watching as the vendors (摊主) spread their wares on the ground.

I hadn’t been to a flea market in over a year when, one Sunday in 2013, I got the itch to go. So I crawled out of bed at 5 a.m., and drove an hour to the Giant Rose Bowl Flea Market in another town. I was looking around and after a couple of hours I was thinking about leaving. I rounded the last corner and took a few steps down the street when I noticed some china spread on the floor. I saw that it was hand-painted china...With forget-me-nots! I raced over to look at it more closely, and picked up a cup and saucer...Forget-me-nots! Exactly like Grandmother’s china, with the same delicate strokes (笔画) and the same thin gold bands around the edges. I looked at the rest of the items-there were the cups! The saucers! The bowls! It was Grandmother’s china!

5 . At the back of our house there was half a mu of vacant land. “It’s a pity to let it go to waste like that,” Mother said. “Since you are all so fond of peanuts, let us open it up and make it a peanut garden.” At that my brother, sister and I were all delighted and so were the young housemaids. And then some went to buy seeds, some began to dig up the ground and others watered it and, in a couple of months, we had a harvest!

“Let us have a harvest festival tonight to celebrate,” Mother suggested, “and ask Dad to join us for a taste of our fresh peanuts. What do you say?” We all agreed, of course. Mother cooked the peanuts in a variety of styles and told us to go to the garden for the celebration.

The weather was not very good that night but, to our great delight, even Father put in an appearance. “Do you like peanuts?” Father asked.

“Yes!” We all answered eagerly.

“But who can tell me what is good about peanuts?”.

“They taste very delicious,” my sister took the lead.

“They can be made into oil,” my elder brother followed.

“They are inexpensive,” I said. “Almost everyone can afford them and everyone enjoys eating them. I think that's what is good about peanuts.”

“In fact there are quantities of good points of peanuts,” Father said, “but one thing I do appreciate is particularly good about them. Unlike apples, peaches and pomegranates that hang their bright and beautiful fruits up on the branches, attracting your admiration, peanuts lie buried in the soil, waiting until they are ripe before letting people dig them up. And you can't tell whether they bear fruits or not just by their stems above ground.”

We all agreed and Mother nodded her head, too. “So you should try to be like the peanuts,” Father went on, “because they are neither grand nor beautiful, but useful.” “That is what I expect of you all.”

We stayed up late that night, eating all the peanuts Mother had cooked for us. But Father's words remained rooted in my mind till this day.
