文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了身患多种疾病并经历病痛和无数次治疗的小女孩Rosie通过成立非盈利组织,给住院的孩子送玩具来帮助他们的故事。

1 . Rosie Colucci’s medical history is filled with a series of thunderstruck numbers: 3 rare and life-threatening diseases—an inoperable brain tumor(肿瘤), neurofibromatosis and hydrocephalus—countless medications, including six types of chemotherapy(化疗); 14 brain surgeries, mainly to implant catheters to keep fluid from gathering on her brain, a result of the hydrocephalus; 16 other surgeries and 230 tests; 405 clinic visits; 1,486 doses of chemotherapy; 71 nights in the hospital; 33 emergency room visits; and 11 stays in the ICU.

Another number: Rosie’s age—14. An official cancer diagnosis came when she was little. After a decade of being sick, the teenager would much rather focus on some different numbers.

Take 60,000—that’s how many new toys, games and blankets she’s helped get into the hands of hospitalized kids. She’s also raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for pediatric cancer research. Rosie increases her toy giveaways around the holidays but gives them out year round.

It didn’t sit well with her as a kid learning to share that so many people gave her stuffed animals and toys, while other kids hospitalized with equally serious diseases weren’t seeing the same gifts.

Rosie works tirelessly on Rosie’s Toy Box, a charitable organization she came up with, which now is on the path toward becoming a registered nonprofit, drawing hundreds of donated toys for hospitalized kids.

“I wanted to de-emphasize the expecting of gifts and asking for gifts, and I just wanted to give her a sense of giving rather than always receiving,” Cathy Reichl, her mother, said, “I hope it’s something that stays with her as she grows, and I think it will be—the realization that not everyone has what you have, some people have struggles with their health and we could just use something to brighten their days.”

1. What does the author think of Rosie’s medical history?
A.Unbelievable.B.Abnormal.
C.Doubtful.D.Unnecessary.
2. When was Rosie diagnosed with cancers?
A.At the age of 3.B.At the age of 4.
C.At the age of 10.D.At the age of 14.
3. What can we say about Rosie’s Toy Box?
A.It is a registered organization.
B.It was founded by Cathy Reichl.
C.It donates toys to children in hospital.
D.It raises money for sick kids to pay for their medical treatment.
4. What can we know according to Cathy Reichl?
A.Rosie’s suffering will be paid off one day.
B.Rosie should raise her awareness of giving.
C.Rosie thinks highly of expecting of gifts and asking for gifts.
D.The realization of equality will accompany Rosie throughout her life.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章是珍妮在父亲节这天写给爸爸的信,讲述了自己与父亲之间发生的事情并表达了对父亲的感激之情。
2 . Dear Dad,

Today, I spent a lot of time selecting and reading the Father’s Day cards at the shopping mall. They all had a special message that in some way or another reflected how I feel about you. Yet it occurred to me that not a single card said what I really wanted to say to you.

You’ll soon be 84 years old. Dad, you and I will have had 55 Father’s Days together. I haven’t always been with you on Father’s Day, but I’ve always been with you in my heart. You know, Dad, there was a time when we were separated by the generation gap. You stood on one side of the Great Divide and I on the other.

The Father-Daughter Conflict shifted into high gear(档位)when you taught me to drive the old Dodge while I decided I would drive the Chevy whether you liked it or not. To my surprise, when the police officer sent me home after you reported the Chevy stolen, you were so tolerant(宽容的)about it because I had thought that would probably be the worst night of my life.

Our relationship greatly improved when I married a man you liked, and things really turned around when we began making babies right and left. Somewhere along the line, the generation gap disappeared. I suppose I saw us and our relationship as aging together, rather like a fine wine.

But the strangest thing happened last week. I was at a stop sign and I watched as you turned the corner in your car. It didn’t immediately occur to me that it was you because the man driving looked so elderly and weak behind the wheel of that huge car. Perhaps I saw your age for the first time that day.

I guess what I’m trying to say, Dad, is what every son and daughter wants to say to their Dad today. Honoring a father on Father’s Day is about respect and sharing and acceptance and tolerance and giving and taking. It’s about loving someone more than words can say, and it’s my wish that it never had to end.

I love you, Dad.

Love,

Jenny

3 . There can be magic in the touch of a hand that loves you. It brings comfort and a silent promise that says, “I am here and you are not alone.”

I memorized every detail about my children. As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease them back to sleep. They clung to me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.

As they grew older and more independent, I noticed that they didn't hold my hand much any more. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now.

But when you've been needed so much for such a long time, it's hard to step back and feel unnecessary.

Then one day, I was visiting my oldest son in New York, where he was working as an actor on a TV show. As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, “Hang on to me, Mom,” then led me safely across.

At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become a man. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other, but in different ways than before.

That scene has replayed in various ways with each of my three children. They have all taught me to lean on them just as they once leaned on me, and that we can always lean on each other. We live miles apart, but stay in touch every day. There is magic and comfort and healing in the touch of a hand that loves you, even if it “touches” you from afar.

A.she needed her son more than before
B.her son had become mature and reliable

5 . When I was in primary school, sometimes I would meet a girl of the same age as me. Lisa was never active, but she was always very sweet and nice. In the 5th grade she came to my class. She was absent a lot, and one day I had the courage to ask why. She told me she was sick, and she explained she wore a wig (假发) because her medicine made her lose her hair. Since then, anytime Lisa came to class, I would hang around with her on the playground.

I received much ridicule (嘲笑) from my friends for this because they thought I was ignoring them for Lisa. My family education taught me to be nice, and I felt Lisa’s needs were much more important than others I knew.

It had been months since Lisa was in our class, and one day our teacher was crying. She explained Lisa died the day before and would no longer be our classmate. She told us Lisa had fought a battle (斗争) with cancer for years.

I was shocked. Lisa never spoke of her illness as if it could kill her. Well, all these years I have kept Lisa in my mind and heart. When I go through the important events in my life, I think of Lisa.

I’ve had a strong wish recently to find her mother and father. I’d like to tell them that though they never met me, their daughter had a sweet effect on my life. I have no idea what her parents’ first names are. I write to your column (专栏) and hope you can point me in the right direction.

6 . Five years ago, my husband and I bought a former farm. It’s a short ride from our Vancouver home but a world away. As we restore the land, I feel my well-being returning, but I think the farm is also working its magic on our son’s growing resilience (适应能力). Since Dev was 20, he has lived with mental illness. We have been on this journey with him from crisis to recovery.

    1     We found the farm.

It has taken a couple of years to clear the land, seed the lawn (草坪) and build garden beds. But we did it even as other parts of our life had come undone. The farm was holding our family together. We come over on weekends and holidays and have been planting.     2

Before he went to treatment, we planted a “guild” in the old apple farm.     3     We dug around the weaker trees and placed in garlic, wildflowers and bone meal. It keeps the moisture (水分) and nutrients in, and the garden seems to thrive (茁壮成长) as a result.

4     The land needed clearing, and Doug, our workman, worked steadily and helped whenever I asked. Asking for help is a principle in the recovery community, a lesson my son is learning. It truly does take a village to restore a farm and rebuild a life.

The desire to recover this land has grown in me.     5     He’s found his own kind of guild that supports him. Owning a farm was never our plan but it came when our family needed a meaningful project. When my hands are in the dirt, I remember that intervention (干预) is necessary and so is allowing nature to take its course. Digging is an act of faith, hope and anticipation of what will appear next.

A.We helped ourselves by helping others.
B.We also learned how to depend on others.
C.My son had great difficulty making a recovery.
D.I have seen this drive toward restoration in my son as well.
E.Just when it couldn’t get any worse, an unexpected light occurred.
F.During this time, Dev is concentrating on his own restoration process.
G.Its aim is to support the health of trees by grouping other surrounding components.

I needed to win 350 tickets to cash the turtle in.so I left Tyden choosing his gift alone there. I bought game tokens(代币)and entered the game room. I had just chosen a game I thought I could win when I heard Tyden's excited voice,“Auntie,Auntie!Look!”

8 . The spring before our son Hank was scheduled to enter kindergarten, we were invited to the school's “Kindergarten Round-up”. The title led me to believe that Hank and I would be enjoying a fun night.999

We arrived to find several on-the-spot tests to see where Hank ranked academically. Somewhat nervously, I watched as Hank recited the alphabet (字母表), counted as high as he could, and arranged blocks in a series of confusing patterns. So far, so good. I breathed a sigh of relief.

“All right, Hank,” the tester said, “just a few more easy questions.” Then she explained to me that she wanted to hear what Hank thinks was the logical thing to do in certain situations. I smiled and nodded, but inside I felt a fresh flash of panic. What if Hank couldn't reach any logical conclusions?

After several dialogues, like “Eating too much sugar?” “Tooth decay!”, the tester nodded her head. “Okay, Hank, tell me what you'd do if you went into a dark room.” Without thinking, Hank said, “Be brave.”

The tester waited a moment before promoting, “What else would you do? Wouldn't you turn on a light?” “Oh, yeah,” Hank said, “if I could reach it.”

Obviously, being brave wasn't the expected answer, but as I listened, all I could think about was how many events awaited him when bravery would be enormously helpful. While it's smart to turn on a light, it never hurts to be brave while you're waiting for your eyes to adjust to the sudden brightness. From the mouth of my child, I realized that I'd handed my son advice that applied to my life just as much as it did to his.

Hank and I left the "Kindergarten Round-up" with a light heart, both believing he was going to be just fine.

B.She was happy about Hank's answer.
C.She got valuable advice from the tester.

9 . Candles were burning bright, exciting my two-year-old son, Jack, who moved forward to blow them out.

Jack’s third birthday was still a few months away but ever since his dad Gary’s big day earlier that year, my son hadn’t stopped talking about celebrating his own. His ,older brothers Oliver, 6, and Josh, 10, were happy to sing the birthday song with him.

But, over time, I grew concerned that Jack wasn’t well. My lovely boy was now a shadow of his former self. How could I ignore it, though doctors weren’t too concerned?

Doctors were cautious about saying Oliver might save Jack’s life in case it didn’t work as planned. To their relief, the result was comforting. They were moved by Oliver’s bravery.

Oliver, now seven, really did save his little brother and they’re now closer than ever.“I didn’t want to do it at the very beginning but at the end I kind of regretted feeling like that because now I know how important it was.” he said.

10 . I kept it in a special box and pulled it out when my brother was to arrive with his wife for New Year. I carried it to the dining room and unfolded the white tablecloth. Its colorful embroidery (刺绣) popped to life. The signatures of all the family and friends who’d ever shared a New Year meal at our table were hand-embroidered on top.

I’d started my embroidery New Year tradition 20 years before, since I wanted something that was uniquely ours — something we could look forward to.

The first time I laid out the clean white cloth and asked the kids to sign it, my family looked at me as if I were crazy. Write on the tablecloth we hoped to protect from jam and tea? Yes! And these days, I have grandkids to carry on the tradition. Each year I used a different color embroidery thread, so we could relive the highlights of particular gatherings. I saw my grandkids’ signatures go from scribbles (潦草的字) to print. We added drawings for milestones, such as a baby’s handprint.

The doorbell rang, and I ran to let in my brother, Tom, and his wife. They’d traveled from North Carolina for their first New Year with us. After greetings and hugs, I led them into the dining room. Tom looked wide-eyed at the tablecloth he had seen only in pictures. He gently touched our mom’s signature, and I put my hand on his, “I’m thankful to have started this while she was alive.”

More than something to look forward to, our tradition holds memories to look back on. Everyone we love is at our table when we sit down for New Year.

1. When does the author usually use the special tablecloth?
A.On her brother’s visit.B.In New Year celebrations.
C.On her grandkids’ birthdays.D.In some traditional holidays.
2. How did the author’s family feel when first asked to sign on the tablecloth?
A.Delighted.B.Discouraged.C.Unbelievable.D.Annoyed.
3. What can be inferred about Tom from Paragraph 4?
A.He was grateful to his mother.
B.He missed the author very much,
C.He would start a new tradition soon.
D.He had never signed on the tablecloth before.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
