There was a boy who was sent to a boarding school. He used to be the brightest student in his class. He was at the top in every competition. But things changed after that. Last week, I was shopping in the local supermarket. My 24-year-old daughter happened to be with me as she had just arrived home for a much-needed visit because she was going to work abroad for six months. As we were walking through the aisles (走道) and picking things she needed, we heard a child’s crying that would last more than fifteen minutes. I wanted to walk over to investigate the situation, already picturing the scene in my mind. No doubt, the cries of the young boy could be heard clearly across the store.
My daughter came up to me and said, “Mom! Is that what I sounded like when I was little?”
“Yes, Rach, you sounded just like that,” I replied.
We tried to continue our shopping, but the loud cries made by the boy who was asking his mom for something continued for what felt like no ending. Several more minutes went by, and the boy just wouldn’t stop. I felt it necessary to follow the cries. As I approached the aisle, I could see several people watching us at the other end of the aisle, talking to each other and shaking their heads. They would walk away and then turn around with their carts (购物车) to continue their talks and figure out what was happening.
I arrived at the aisle to find a twenty-something mother standing in the middle of the aisle calmly telling the boy, “No.” She was not going to get whatever the boy wanted. Everyone was talking about her and I knew that my life is never going to be the same ever again. I wasn’t ready to grow up, to be a big brother. But it just happened in an instant.
On the day before Christmas, everyone was in our home, talking only about my newborn sister. My family was becoming hers. Even my uncles didn’t ask me anything about the gift. She stole everything I’d ever had, my life and my presents. Thinking about this, I cried to sleep. I had a nightmare (噩梦) and woke up at the middle of the night. Shadows were all around me, and I was defenseless and so weak. I ran into my parents’ bedroom but couldn’t wake up my poor parents who were just too worn out. I was standing near their bed, trying not to cry when I saw her. She was awake and looking at me with her big eyes in her small bed.

Manu continued sleeping.
Finally, after much pestering and pampering (纠缠和纵容), Manu got out of bed and started getting ready for school lazily. The school bus was already honking (按喇叭) in front of his house while Manu was brushing his teeth. Akhila requested the driver to wait for a few minutes. She quickly helped Manu get ready and helped him get to his school bus.
“Phew! Manu didn’t miss his bus today” Akhila sighed. She was really concerned about her son. Manu couldn’t do anything on time, waking up in the morning or any of his daily tasks. He ran down to the kitchen and cried out “Mom! Why didn’t you wake me up? The school bus has already left and I am really late for school today.” He couldn’t stop crying. “I have a math test today and Mrs. Mangat will punish me if I miss her class and the test.” The calm face of Akhila made Manu feel more anxious.

Tom liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品). “Mom will love having a special gift,” he thought.
Tom checked his mailbox every day for his prize. Days went by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Tom still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a gift. And he still didn’t have money.
